The Ministry of John the Baptist
3 In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness[a] of Judea proclaiming, 2 “Repent,[b] for the kingdom of heaven is near.” 3 For he is the one about whom the prophet Isaiah had spoken:[c]
“The voice[d] of one shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make[e] his paths straight.’”[f]
4 Now John wore clothing made from camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey.[g] 5 Then people from Jerusalem,[h] as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him, 6 and he was baptizing them[i] in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
7 But when he saw many Pharisees[j] and Sadducees[k] coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruit[l] that proves your[m] repentance, 9 and don’t think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’[n] For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones! 10 Even now the ax is laid at[o] the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 “I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy[p] to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.[q] 12 His winnowing fork[r] is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse,[s] but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!”[t]
The Baptism of Jesus
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River.[u] 14 But John[v] tried to prevent[w] him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?” 15 So Jesus replied[x] to him, “Let it happen now,[y] for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John[z] yielded[aa] to him. 16 After[ab] Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the[ac] heavens[ad] opened[ae] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove[af] and coming to rest[ag] on him. 17 And[ah] a voice from heaven said,[ai] “This is my one dear Son;[aj] in him[ak] I take great delight.”[al]
The Ministry of John the Baptist
1 The beginning of the gospel[a] of Jesus Christ,[b] the Son of God.[c] 2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,[d]
“Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way,[e]
3 the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make[f] his paths straight.’”[g]
4 In the wilderness[h] John the baptizer[i] began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.[j] 5 People[k] from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them[l] in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 6 John wore a garment made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.[m] 7 He proclaimed,[n] “One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy[o] to bend down and untie the strap[p] of his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus
9 Now[q] in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.[r] 10 And just as Jesus[s] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens[t] splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.[u] 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son;[v] in you I take great delight.”[w] 12 The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness.[x] 13 He was in the wilderness forty days,[y] enduring temptations from Satan. He[z] was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs.[aa]
Preaching in Galilee and the Call of the Disciples
14 Now after John was imprisoned,[ab] Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel[ac] of God.[ad] 15 He[ae] said, “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God[af] is near. Repent and believe the gospel!” 16 As he went along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).[ag] 17 Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people!”[ah] 18 They left their nets immediately and followed him.[ai] 19 Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their[aj] boat[ak] mending nets. 20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus’ Authority
21 Then[al] they went to Capernaum.[am] When the Sabbath came,[an] Jesus[ao] went into the synagogue[ap] and began to teach. 22 The people there[aq] were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority,[ar] not like the experts in the law.[as] 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit,[at] and he cried out,[au] 24 “Leave us alone,[av] Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One[aw] of God!” 25 But[ax] Jesus rebuked him:[ay] “Silence! Come out of him!”[az] 26 After throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed so that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him.” 28 So[ba] the news about him spread quickly throughout all the region around Galilee.
Healings at Simon’s House
29 Now[bb] as soon as they left the synagogue,[bc] they entered Simon and Andrew’s house,[bd] with James and John. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying down, sick with a fever, so[be] they spoke to Jesus[bf] at once about her. 31 He came and raised her up by gently taking her hand. Then the fever left her and she began to serve[bg] them. 32 When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered by the door. 34 So[bh] he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons.[bi] But[bj] he would not permit the demons to speak,[bk] because they knew him.[bl]
Praying and Preaching
35 Then[bm] Jesus[bn] got up early in the morning when it was still very dark, departed, and went out to a deserted place, and there he spent time in prayer.[bo] 36 Simon and his companions searched for him. 37 When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 He replied,[bp] “Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I can preach there too. For that is what I came out here to do.”[bq] 39 So[br] he went into all of Galilee preaching in their synagogues[bs] and casting out demons.
Cleansing a Leper
40 Now[bt] a leper[bu] came to him and fell to his knees, asking for help. “If[bv] you are willing, you can make me clean,” he said. 41 Moved with indignation,[bw] Jesus[bx] stretched out his hand and touched[by] him, saying, “I am willing. Be clean!” 42 The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean. 43 Immediately Jesus[bz] sent the man[ca] away with a very strong warning. 44 He told him,[cb] “See that you do not say anything to anyone,[cc] but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded[cd] for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”[ce] 45 But as the man[cf] went out he began to announce it publicly and spread the story widely, so that Jesus[cg] was no longer able to enter any town openly but stayed outside in remote places. Still[ch] they kept coming[ci] to him from everywhere.
The Ministry of John the Baptist
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,[a] when Pontius Pilate[b] was governor of Judea, and Herod[c] was tetrarch[d] of Galilee, and his brother Philip[e] was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias[f] was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood[g] of Annas and Caiaphas, the word[h] of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.[i] 3 He[j] went into all the region around the Jordan River,[k] preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.[l]
4 As it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,
“The voice[m] of one shouting in the wilderness:[n]
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make[o] his paths straight.
5 Every valley will be filled,[p]
and every mountain and hill will be brought low,
and the crooked will be made straight,
and the rough ways will be made smooth,
6 and all humanity[q] will see the salvation of God.’”[r]
7 So John[s] said to the crowds[t] that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers![u] Who warned you to flee[v] from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce[w] fruit[x] that proves your repentance, and don’t begin to say[y] to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’[z] For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones![aa] 9 Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees,[ab] and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be[ac] cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 So[ad] the crowds were asking[ae] him, “What then should we do?” 11 John[af] answered them,[ag] “The person who has two tunics[ah] must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors[ai] also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 He told them, “Collect no more[aj] than you are required to.”[ak] 14 Then some soldiers[al] also asked him, “And as for us—what should we do?”[am] He told them, “Take money from no one by violence[an] or by false accusation,[ao] and be content with your pay.”
15 While the people were filled with anticipation[ap] and they all wondered[aq] whether perhaps John[ar] could be the Christ,[as] 16 John answered them all,[at] “I baptize you with water,[au] but one more powerful than I am is coming—I am not worthy[av] to untie the strap[aw] of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.[ax] 17 His winnowing fork[ay] is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse,[az] but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”[ba]
18 And in this way,[bb] with many other exhortations, John[bc] proclaimed good news to the people. 19 But when John rebuked Herod[bd] the tetrarch[be] because of Herodias, his brother’s wife,[bf] and because of all the evil deeds[bg] that he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.
The Baptism of Jesus
21 Now when[bh] all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying,[bi] the heavens[bj] opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.[bk] And a voice came from heaven, “You are my one dear Son;[bl] in you I take great delight.”[bm]
