Luke 20:20 - John 5:47

20 (A)So they watched Him, and sent spies who [a]pretended to be righteous, in order (B)that they might [b]catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of (C)the governor. 21 They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You [c]are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. 22 Is it [d]lawful for us (D)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23 But He detected their trickery and said to them, 24 “Show Me a [e]denarius. Whose [f]likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 And He said to them, “Then (E)render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were unable to [g](F)catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 (G)Now there came to Him some of the (H)Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (I)if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should [h]marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third [i]married her; and in the same way [j]all seven [k]died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman died also. 33 In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For [l]all seven [m]had married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of (J)this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (K)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are (L)sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in (M)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (N)the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 (O)Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for (P)all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For (Q)they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (R)Then He said to them, “How is it that they say [n]the Christ is (S)David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

(T)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
43 (U)Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”

45 (V)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, (W)who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Gift

21 (X)And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. And He saw a poor widow putting [o]in (Y)two [p]small copper coins. And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all out of their [q]surplus put into the [r]offering; but she out of her poverty put in all [s]that she had (Z)to live on.”

(AA)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said, As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which (AB)there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.”

They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the [t]sign when these things are about to take place?” And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘(AC)I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ (AD)Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”

Things to Come

10 Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, 11 and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great [u]signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, (AE)they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, [v]bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. 13 (AF)It will lead to [w]an opportunity for your testimony. 14 (AG)So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15 for (AH)I will give you [x]utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. 16 But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17 and you will be hated by all because of My name. 18 Yet (AI)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 (AJ)By your endurance you will gain your [y]lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem (AK)surrounded by armies, then [z]recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of [aa]the city must leave, and (AL)those who are in the country must not enter [ab]the city; 22 because these are (AM)days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for (AN)there will be great distress upon the [ac]land and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by (AO)the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and (AP)Jerusalem will be (AQ)trampled under foot by the Gentiles until (AR)the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Return of Christ

25 “There will be [ad]signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the [ae]world; for the powers of [af]the heavens will be shaken. 27 (AS)Then they will see (AT)the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (AU)your redemption is drawing near.”

29 Then He told them a parable: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees; 30 as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and (AV)know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, [ag]recognize that (AW)the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I say to you, this [ah]generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33 (AX)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

34 (AY)Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. 36 But (AZ)keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to (BA)stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Now [ai]during the day He was (BB)teaching in the temple, but [aj](BC)at evening He would go out and spend the night on [ak](BD)the mount that is called [al]Olivet. 38 And all the people would get up (BE)early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

Preparing the Passover

22 (BF)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the (BG)Passover, was approaching. The chief priests and the scribes (BH)were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.

(BI)And (BJ)Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, [am]belonging to the number of the twelve. And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and (BK)officers how he might betray Him to them. They were glad and agreed to give him money. So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them [an]apart from the crowd.

(BL)Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which (BM)the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And Jesus sent (BN)Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Lord’s Supper

14 (BO)When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and (BP)the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it (BQ)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 (BR)And when He had taken a cup and (BS)given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for (BT)I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and (BU)given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is (BV)poured out for you is the (BW)new covenant in My blood. 21 (BX)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with [ao]Mine on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (BY)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.

Who Is Greatest

24 And there arose also (BZ)a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25 (CA)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way with you, (CB)but the one who is the greatest among you must become like (CC)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For (CD)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But (CE)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stood by Me in My (CF)trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a (CG)kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may (CH)eat and drink at My table in My (CI)kingdom, and (CJ)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (CK)Satan has [ap]demanded permission to (CL)sift you like wheat; 32 but I (CM)have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, (CN)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (CO)But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” 34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, (CP)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [aq]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [ar]whoever has no sword is to sell his [as]coat and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘(CQ)And He was numbered with transgressors’; for (CR)that which refers to Me has its [at]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (CS)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 (CT)And He came out and proceeded (CU)as was His custom to (CV)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (CW)When He arrived at the place, He said to them, (CX)Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (CY)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (CZ)cup from Me; (DA)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [au]Now an (DB)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (DC)being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (DD)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (DE)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (DF)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, [av]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (DG)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (DH)as you would against a robber? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [aw]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (DI)Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (DJ)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (DK)After they had kindled a fire in the middle of (DL)the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58 A little later, (DM)another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (DN)for he is a Galilean too.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 (DO)The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (DP)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

63 (DQ)Now the men who were holding [ax]Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “(DR)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (DS)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (DT)When it was day, (DU)the [ay]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (DV)council chamber, saying, 67 (DW)If You are the [az]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (DX)But from now on (DY)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “Are You (DZ)the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, [ba](EA)Yes, I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Jesus before Pilate

23 Then the whole body of them got up and (EB)brought Him before Pilate. (EC)And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man (ED)misleading our nation and (EE)forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [bb]Christ, a King.” So Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, (EF)It is as you say.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “(EG)I find no guilt in this man.” But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, (EH)starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”

When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to (EI)Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem [bc]at that time.

Jesus before Herod

Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for (EJ)he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some [bd]sign performed by Him. And he questioned Him [be]at some length; but (EK)He answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, (EL)dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 Now (EM)Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

13 Pilate summoned the chief priests and the (EN)rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who (EO)incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I (EP)have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. 15 No, nor has (EQ)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will (ER)punish Him and release Him.” 17 [[bf]Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “(ES)Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) 20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will (ET)punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Simon Bears the Cross

26 (EU)When they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (EV)Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were [bg](EW)mourning and lamenting Him. 28 But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘(EX)Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to (EY)say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things [bh]when the tree is green, what will happen [bi]when it is dry?”

32 (EZ)Two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (FA)When they came to the place called [bj]The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 [bk]But Jesus was saying, (FB)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (FC)And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35 And the people stood by, looking on. And even the (FD)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; (FE)let Him save Himself if this is the [bl]Christ of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, (FF)offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “(FG)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “(FH)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 (FI)One of the criminals who were hanged there was [bm]hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the [bn]Christ? (FJ)Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [bo]what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come [bp]in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in (FK)Paradise.”

44 (FL)It was now about [bq](FM)the sixth hour, and darkness [br]fell over the whole land until [bs]the ninth hour, 45 [bt]because the sun was obscured; and (FN)the veil of the temple was torn [bu]in two. 46 And Jesus, (FO)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (FP)into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 (FQ)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (FR)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was [bv]innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, began to return, [bw](FS)beating their breasts. 49 (FT)And all His acquaintances and (FU)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (FV)And a man named Joseph, who was a (FW)member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (FX)waiting for the kingdom of God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was (FY)the [bx]preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to [by]begin. 55 Now (FZ)the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (GA)prepared spices and perfumes.

And (GB)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

The Resurrection

24 (GC)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of (GD)the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, (GE)two men suddenly (GF)stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He (GG)has [bz]risen. Remember how He spoke to you (GH)while He was still in Galilee, saying that (GI)the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” And (GJ)they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now they were (GK)Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to (GL)the apostles. 11 But these words appeared [ca]to them as nonsense, and they (GM)would not believe them. 12 But Peter got up and (GN)ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings [cb]only; and he went away (GO)to his home, marveling at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

13 And behold, (GP)two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was [cc]about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. 16 But (GQ)their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You [cd]the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about (GR)Jesus the Nazarene, who was a (GS)prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our (GT)rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to (GU)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us amazed us. (GV)When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that (GW)the prophets have spoken! 26 (GX)Was it not necessary for the [ce]Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning [cf]with (GY)Moses and [cg]with all the (GZ)prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (HA)He acted as though He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day [ch]is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and (HB)blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31 Then their (HC)eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from [ci]their sight. 32 They said to one another, “[cj]Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He (HD)was [ck]explaining the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (HE)found gathered together the eleven and (HF)those who were with them, 34 saying, “(HG)The Lord has really risen and (HH)has appeared to Simon.” 35 They began to relate [cl]their experiences on the road and how (HI)He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Other Appearances

36 While they were telling these things, (HJ)He Himself stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing (HK)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your [cm]hearts? 39 (HL)See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; (HM)touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 While they still [cn](HN)could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, (HO)Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43 and He took it and (HP)ate it before them.

44 Now He said to them, (HQ)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the (HR)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (HS)the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He (HT)opened their [co]minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, (HU)Thus it is written, that the [cp]Christ would suffer and (HV)rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that (HW)repentance [cq]for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed [cr]in His name to (HX)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are (HY)witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, (HZ)I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but (IA)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as (IB)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple [cs]praising God.

The Deity of Jesus Christ

(IC)In the beginning was (ID)the Word, and the Word was (IE)with God, and (IF)the Word was God. [ct]He was in the beginning with God. (IG)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (IH)In Him was life, and the life was (II)the Light of men. (IJ)The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [cu]comprehend it.

The Witness John

There [cv]came a man sent from God, whose name was (IK)John. [cw]He came [cx](IL)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (IM)so that all might believe through him. [cy](IN)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

There was (IO)the true Light [cz]which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and (IP)the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His [da]own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (IQ)children of God, even (IR)to those who believe in His name, 13 (IS)who were [db]born, not of [dc]blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And (IT)the Word (IU)became flesh, and [dd](IV)dwelt among us, and (IW)we saw His glory, glory as of [de]the only begotten from the Father, full of (IX)grace and (IY)truth. 15 John *(IZ)testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘(JA)He who comes after me [df]has a higher rank than I, (JB)for He existed before me.’” 16 For of His (JC)fullness [dg]we have all received, and [dh]grace upon grace. 17 For (JD)the Law was given through Moses; (JE)grace and (JF)truth [di]were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 (JG)No one has seen God at any time; (JH)the only begotten God who is (JI)in the bosom of the Father, (JJ)He has explained Him.

The Testimony of John

19 This is (JK)the testimony of John, when (JL)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites (JM)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “(JN)I am not [dj]the Christ.” 21 They asked him, “What then? Are you (JO)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (JP)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (JQ)a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the [dk]Christ, nor Elijah, nor (JR)the Prophet?” 26 John answered them saying, “(JS)I baptize [dl]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is (JT)He who comes after me, the (JU)thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany (JV)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, (JW)the Lamb of God who (JX)takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘(JY)After me comes a Man who [dm]has a higher rank than I, (JZ)for He existed before me.’ 31 I did not recognize [dn]Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing [do]in water.” 32 John (KA)testified saying, “(KB)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not recognize [dp]Him, but He who sent me to baptize [dq]in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (KC)this is the One who baptizes [dr]in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is (KD)the Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts

35 Again (KE)the next day John was standing [ds]with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, (KF)the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “(KG)Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the [dt]tenth hour. 40 (KH)One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the (KI)Messiah” (which translated means [du]Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of [dv](KJ)John; you shall be called (KK)Cephas” (which is translated [dw](KL)Peter).

43 (KM)The next day He purposed to go into (KN)Galilee, and He *found (KO)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, (KP)Follow Me.” 44 Now (KQ)Philip was from (KR)Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 (KS)Philip *found (KT)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom (KU)Moses in the Law and also (KV)the Prophets wrote—Jesus of (KW)Nazareth, (KX)the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “(KY)Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (KZ)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Behold, an (LA)Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before (LB)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered Him, “(LC)Rabbi, You are (LD)the Son of God; You are the (LE)King of Israel.” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (LF)the heavens opened and (LG)the angels of God ascending and descending on (LH)the Son of Man.”

Miracle at Cana

On (LI)the third day there was a wedding in (LJ)Cana of Galilee, and the (LK)mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His (LL)disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus *said to her, (LM)Woman, [dx](LN)what does that have to do with us? (LO)My hour has not yet come.” His (LP)mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there (LQ)for the Jewish custom of purification, containing [dy]twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the [dz]headwaiter.” So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water (LR)which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people (LS)have [ea]drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His [eb](LT)signs Jesus did in Cana of (LU)Galilee, and manifested His (LV)glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to (LW)Capernaum, He and His (LX)mother and His (LY)brothers and His (LZ)disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

13 (MA)The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus (MB)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (MC)And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling (MD)the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making (ME)My Father’s house a [ec]place of business.” 17 His (MF)disciples remembered that it was written, “(MG)Zeal for Your house will consume me.” 18 (MH)The Jews then said to Him, “(MI)What sign do You show us [ed]as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, (MJ)Destroy this [ee]temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 (MK)The Jews then said, “It took (ML)forty-six years to build this [ef]temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of (MM)the [eg]temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His (MN)disciples (MO)remembered that He said this; and they believed (MP)the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at (MQ)the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, (MR)observing His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for (MS)He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, (MT)for He Himself knew what was in man.

The New Birth

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named (MU)Nicodemus, a (MV)ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “(MW)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these [eh](MX)signs that You do unless (MY)God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one (MZ)is born [ei]again he cannot see (NA)the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of (NB)water and the Spirit he cannot enter into (NC)the kingdom of God. (ND)That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born [ej]again.’ (NE)The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you (NF)the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, (NG)we speak of what we know and (NH)testify of what we have seen, and (NI)you do not accept our testimony. 12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 (NJ)No one has ascended into heaven, but (NK)He who descended from heaven: (NL)the Son of Man. 14 As (NM)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must (NN)the Son of Man (NO)be lifted up; 15 so that whoever [ek]believes will (NP)in Him have eternal life.

16 “For God so (NQ)loved the world, that He (NR)gave His [el](NS)only begotten Son, that whoever (NT)believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God (NU)did not send the Son into the world (NV)to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 (NW)He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of (NX)the [em]only begotten Son of God. 19 This is the judgment, that (NY)the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for (NZ)their deeds were evil. 20 (OA)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But he who (OB)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

John’s Last Testimony

22 After these things Jesus and His (OC)disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and (OD)baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized— 24 for (OE)John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25 Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about (OF)purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “(OG)Rabbi, He who was with you (OH)beyond the Jordan, to whom you (OI)have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” 27 John answered and said, “(OJ)A man can receive nothing unless it (OK)has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves [en]are my witnesses that I said, ‘(OL)I am not the [eo]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is (OM)the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this (ON)joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 (OO)He who comes from above is above all, (OP)he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. (OQ)He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 What He has seen and heard, of that He (OR)testifies; and (OS)no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony (OT)has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For He whom God has (OU)sent speaks the words of God; [ep](OV)for He gives the Spirit without measure. 35 (OW)The Father loves the Son and (OX)has given all things into His hand. 36 He who (OY)believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who (OZ)does not [eq]obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Jesus Goes to Galilee

Therefore when (PA)the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and (PB)baptizing more disciples than John (although (PC)Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His (PD)disciples were), He left (PE)Judea and went away (PF)again into Galilee. And He had to pass through (PG)Samaria. So He *came to a city of (PH)Samaria called Sychar, near (PI)the parcel of ground that (PJ)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about [er]the sixth hour.

The Woman of Samaria

There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His (PK)disciples had gone away into (PL)the city to buy food. Therefore the (PM)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (PN)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (PO)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[es]Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that (PP)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (PQ)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (PR)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to (PS)eternal life.”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[et]Sir, (PT)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[eu]Sir, I perceive that You are (PU)a prophet. 20 (PV)Our fathers worshiped in (PW)this mountain, and you people say that (PX)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, (PY)an hour is coming when (PZ)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (QA)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for (QB)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But (QC)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (QD)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is [ev]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (QE)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (QF)Messiah is coming ((QG)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, (QH)I who speak to you am He.”

27 At this point His (QI)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man (QJ)who told me all the things that I have done; (QK)this is not [ew]the Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(QL)Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (QM)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (QN)do the will of Him who sent Me and to (QO)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white (QP)for harvest. 36 Already he who reaps is receiving (QQ)wages and is gathering (QR)fruit for (QS)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true, ‘(QT)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

The Samaritans

39 From (QU)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(QV)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed (QW)the Savior of the world.”

43 After (QX)the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that (QY)a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (QZ)having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing a Nobleman’s Son

46 Therefore He came again to (RA)Cana of Galilee (RB)where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (RC)Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come (RD)out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see [ex](RE)signs and (RF)wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “[ey]Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, (RG)Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his [ez]son was living. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the [fa]seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and (RH)his whole household. 54 This is again a (RI)second [fb]sign that Jesus performed when He had (RJ)come out of Judea into Galilee.

The Healing at Bethesda

After these things there was (RK)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by (RL)the sheep gate a pool, which is called (RM)in [fc]Hebrew [fd]Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [[fe]waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] A man was there who had been [ff]ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when (RN)the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus *said to him, (RO)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.

(RP)Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 10 So (RQ)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and (RR)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (RS)sin anymore, (RT)so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and told (RU)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason (RV)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Jesus’ Equality with God

18 For this reason therefore (RW)the Jews (RX)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (RY)making Himself equal with God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (RZ)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [fg]the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 (SA)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (SB)greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (SC)gives them life, even so (SD)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (SE)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (SF)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (SG)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (SH)does not come into judgment, but has (SI)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (SJ)an hour is coming and now is, when (SK)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (SL)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (SM)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (SN)execute judgment, because He is [fh]the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for (SO)an hour is coming, in which (SP)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; (SQ)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

30 (SR)I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and (SS)My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but (ST)the will of Him who sent Me.

31 (SU)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [fi]true. 32 There is (SV)another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Witness of John

33 You have sent to John, and he (SW)has testified to the truth. 34 But (SX)the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (SY)the lamp that was burning and was shining and you (SZ)were willing to rejoice for [fj]a while in his light.

Witness of Works

36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (TA)the works which the Father has given Me (TB)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (TC)has sent Me.

Witness of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me, (TD)He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 You do not have (TE)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (TF)sent.

Witness of the Scripture

39 [fk](TG)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (TH)these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (TI)I do not receive glory from men; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; (TJ)if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you (TK)receive [fl]glory from one another and you do not seek (TL)the [fm]glory that is from (TM)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (TN)Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for (TO)he wrote about Me. 47 But (TP)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
