Psalm 58-65

Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked.

For the choir director; set to [a]Al-tashheth. A [b]Mikhtam of David.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, O [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]uprightly, O sons of men?
No, in heart you (B)work unrighteousness;
On earth you (C)weigh out the violence of your hands.
The wicked are estranged (D)from the womb;
These who speak lies (E)go astray from [f]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [g](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

O God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord.
Let them (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [h](K)aims his arrows, let them be as [i]headless shafts.
Let them be as a snail which [j]melts away as it goes along,
Like the (L)miscarriages of a woman which never see the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the [k]green and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will rejoice when he (P)sees the vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And men will say, “Surely there is a [l](R)reward for the righteous;
Surely there is a God who (S)judges [m]on earth!”

Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies.

For the choir director; set to [n]Al-tashheth. A [o]Mikhtam of David, [p]when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill him.

59 (T)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
[q](U)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from (V)those who do iniquity
And save me from (W)men of bloodshed.
For behold, they (X)have [r]set an ambush for my [s]life;
[t]Fierce men [u](Y)launch an attack against me,
(Z)Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord,
[v](AA)For no guilt of mine, they run and set themselves against me.
(AB)Arouse Yourself to [w]help me, and see!
You, (AC)O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to [x](AD)punish all the nations;
(AE)Do not be gracious to any who are treacherous in iniquity. [y]Selah.
They (AF)return at evening, they howl like a (AG)dog,
And go around the city.
Behold, they (AH)belch forth with their mouth;
(AI)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “(AJ)Who hears?”
But You, O Lord, (AK)laugh at them;
You (AL)scoff at all the nations.

Because of [z]his (AM)strength I will watch for You,
For God is my (AN)stronghold.
10 [aa]My God (AO)in His lovingkindness will meet me;
God will let me (AP)look triumphantly upon [ab]my foes.
11 Do not slay them, (AQ)or my people will forget;
[ac](AR)Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down,
O Lord, (AS)our shield.
12 [ad]On account of the (AT)sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
Let them even be (AU)caught in their pride,
And on account of (AV)curses and [ae]lies which they utter.
13 [af](AW)Destroy them in wrath, [ag]destroy them that they may be no more;
That men may (AX)know that God [ah]rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth. Selah.
14 They (AY)return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And go around the city.
15 They (AZ)wander about [ai]for food
And [aj]growl if they are not satisfied.

16 But as for me, I shall (BA)sing of Your strength;
Yes, I shall (BB)joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the (BC)morning,
For You have been my (BD)stronghold
And a (BE)refuge in the day of my distress.
17 (BF)O my strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my (BG)stronghold, the [ak]God who shows me lovingkindness.

Lament over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.

For the choir director; according to [al]Shushan Eduth. A [am]Mikhtam of David, to teach; [an]when he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, (BH)You have rejected us. You have [ao](BI)broken us;
You have been (BJ)angry; O, (BK)restore us.
You have made the [ap](BL)land quake, You have split it open;
(BM)Heal its breaches, for it totters.
You have [aq](BN)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us [ar]wine to (BO)drink that makes us stagger.
You have given a (BP)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. [as]Selah.
(BQ)That Your (BR)beloved may be delivered,
(BS)Save with Your right hand, and answer [at]us!

God has spoken in His [au](BT)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (BU)Shechem and measure out the valley of (BV)Succoth.
(BW)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(BX)Ephraim also is the [av]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [aw](BY)scepter.
(BZ)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (CA)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Shout loud, O (CB)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who [ax]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have not You Yourself, O God, (CC)rejected us?
And (CD)will You not go forth with our armies, O God?
11 O give us help against the adversary,
For (CE)deliverance [ay]by man is in vain.
12 [az]Through God we shall (CF)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (CG)tread down our adversaries.

Confidence in God’s Protection.

For the choir director; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

61 (CH)Hear my cry, O God;
(CI)Give heed to my prayer.
From the (CJ)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (CK)faint;
Lead me to (CL)the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a (CM)refuge for me,
A (CN)tower of strength [ba]against the enemy.
Let me [bb](CO)dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me (CP)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. [bc]Selah.

For You have heard my (CQ)vows, O God;
You have given me the inheritance of those who (CR)fear Your name.
You will [bd](CS)prolong the king’s [be]life;
His years will be as many generations.
He will [bf]abide (CT)before God forever;
Appoint (CU)lovingkindness and truth that they may preserve him.
So I will (CV)sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may (CW)pay my vows day by day.

God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression.

For the choir director; [bg]according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

62 (CX)My soul waits in silence for God only;
From Him (CY)is my salvation.
He only is my (CZ)rock and my salvation,
My (DA)stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How long will you assail a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a (DB)leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position;
They (DC)delight in falsehood;
They (DD)bless with [bh]their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. [bi]Selah.

My soul, (DE)wait in silence for God only,
For my hope is from Him.
He only is (DF)my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
On God my (DG)salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my (DH)refuge is in God.
(DI)Trust in Him at all times, O people;
(DJ)Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Men of (DK)low degree are only (DL)vanity and men of rank are a (DM)lie;
In the (DN)balances they go up;
They are together lighter than breath.
10 (DO)Do not trust in oppression
And do not [bj]vainly hope in (DP)robbery;
If riches increase, (DQ)do not set your heart upon them.

11 [bk]Once God has (DR)spoken;
[bl]Twice I have heard this:
That (DS)power belongs to God;
12 And lovingkindness (DT)is Yours, O Lord,
For You (DU)recompense a man according to his work.

The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God.

A Psalm of David, [bm]when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

63 O God, (DV)You are my God; I shall seek You [bn]earnestly;
My soul (DW)thirsts for You, my flesh [bo]yearns for You,
In a (DX)dry and weary land where there is no water.
Thus I have (DY)seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your (DZ)lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
So I will bless You (EA)as long as I live;
I will (EB)lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul is (EC)satisfied as with [bp]marrow and fatness,
And my mouth offers (ED)praises with joyful lips.

When I remember You (EE)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the (EF)night watches,
For (EG)You have been my help,
And in the (EH)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
My soul (EI)clings [bq]to You;
Your (EJ)right hand upholds me.

But those who (EK)seek my [br]life to destroy it,
Will go into the [bs](EL)depths of the earth.
10 [bt]They will be [bu](EM)delivered over to the power of the sword;
They will be a [bv](EN)prey for foxes.
11 But the (EO)king will rejoice in God;
Everyone who (EP)swears by Him will glory,
For the (EQ)mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.

Prayer for Deliverance from Secret Enemies.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

64 Hear my voice, O God, in (ER)my [bw]complaint;
(ES)Preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
Hide me from the (ET)secret counsel of evildoers,
From the tumult of (EU)those who do iniquity,
Who (EV)have sharpened their tongue like a sword.
They (EW)aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
To (EX)shoot [bx]from concealment at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and (EY)do not fear.
They [by]hold fast to themselves an evil purpose;
They [bz]talk of (EZ)laying snares secretly;
They say, “(FA)Who can see them?”
They [ca]devise injustices, saying,
“We are [cb]ready with a well-conceived plot”;
For the [cc](FB)inward thought and the heart of a man are [cd]deep.

But (FC)God [ce]will shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly [cf]they will be wounded.
So [cg]they [ch]will (FD)make him stumble;
(FE)Their own tongue is against them;
All who see them will (FF)shake the head.
Then all men [ci]will (FG)fear,
And they [cj]will (FH)declare the work of God,
And [ck]will consider [cl]what He has done.
10 The righteous man will be (FI)glad in the Lord and will (FJ)take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will glory.

God’s Abundant Favor to Earth and Man.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David. A Song.

65 There will be silence [cm]before You, and praise in Zion, O God,
And to You the (FK)vow will be performed.
O You who hear prayer,
To You (FL)all [cn]men come.
[co](FM)Iniquities prevail against me;
As for our transgressions, You [cp](FN)forgive them.
How (FO)blessed is the one whom You (FP)choose and bring near to You
To dwell in Your courts.
We will be (FQ)satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.

By (FR)awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, O (FS)God of our salvation,
You who are the trust of all the (FT)ends of the earth and of the farthest [cq](FU)sea;
Who (FV)establishes the mountains by His strength,
Being (FW)girded with might;
Who (FX)stills the roaring of the seas,
The roaring of their waves,
And the (FY)tumult of the peoples.
They who dwell in the (FZ)ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;
You make the [cr]dawn and the sunset shout for joy.

You visit the earth and (GA)cause it to overflow;
You greatly (GB)enrich it;
The [cs](GC)stream of God is full of water;
You prepare their (GD)grain, for thus You prepare [ct]the earth.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
You [cu]settle its ridges,
You soften it (GE)with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You have crowned the year [cv]with Your [cw](GF)bounty,
And Your [cx]paths (GG)drip with fatness.
12 (GH)The pastures of the wilderness drip,
And the (GI)hills gird themselves with rejoicing.
13 The meadows are (GJ)clothed with flocks
And the valleys are (GK)covered with grain;
They (GL)shout for joy, yes, they sing.
