Beginning
The One Who Rescues Me
For the choir director. Of David. A Psalm.
40 I (A)hoped [a]earnestly for Yahweh;
And He inclined to me and (B)heard my cry for help.
2 He brought me up out of the (C)pit of destruction, out of the [b]miry clay,
And (D)He set my feet upon a high rock, (E)He established my steps.
3 He put a (F)new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will (G)see and fear
And will trust in Yahweh.
4 How (H)blessed is the man who has made Yahweh his trust,
And (I)has not [c]turned to the proud, nor to those who (J)stray into falsehood.
5 Many, O Yahweh my God, are (K)the wondrous deeds You have done,
And Your (L)thoughts toward us;
There is none to compare with You.
I would declare and speak of them,
But they (M)are too numerous to recount.
6 [d](N)Sacrifice and meal offering [e]You have not desired;
My ears You have [f]opened;
Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is [g]written of me.
8 (O)I desire to do Your will, O my God;
(P)Your law is within my inner being.”
9 I (Q)proclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly;
Behold, I do (R)not restrain my lips,
O Yahweh, (S)You know.
10 I do (T)not conceal Your righteousness within my heart;
I (U)speak of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I do not hide Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.
11 You, O Yahweh, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
[h]Your (V)lovingkindness and Your truth will continually guard me.
12 For evils beyond number have (W)surrounded me;
My (X)iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are (Y)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my (Z)heart has [i]failed me.
13 (AA)Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me;
Make (AB)haste, O Yahweh, to help me.
14 Let those be (AC)ashamed and humiliated together
Who (AD)seek my [j]life to sweep it away;
Let those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight in [k]evil against me.
15 Let those (AE)be [l]appalled because of their shame
Who (AF)say to me, “Aha, aha!”
16 (AG)Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
Let those who love Your salvation (AH)say continually,
“Yahweh be magnified!”
17 As for me, (AI)I am afflicted and needy,
[m](AJ)May the Lord think of me.
You are my help and the One who rescues me;
Do not delay, O my God.
O Yahweh, Be Gracious to Me
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
41 How blessed is he who (AK)considers the [n]poor;
Yahweh will provide him escape (AL)in a day of [o]calamity.
2 Yahweh will (AM)keep him and keep him alive,
And he shall be (AN)blessed upon the earth;
And (AO)do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
3 Yahweh will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You [p]restore him to health.
4 As for me, I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me;
(AP)Heal my soul, for (AQ)I have sinned against You.”
5 My enemies (AR)speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
6 And [q]when he comes to see me, he (AS)speaks [r]worthlessness;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he speaks it.
7 All who hate me whisper together against me;
Against me, they (AT)devise for me [s]calamity, saying,
8 “A vile thing is poured out [t]upon him,
That when he lies down, he will (AU)not rise up again.”
9 Even my (AV)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.
10 But You, O Yahweh, be gracious to me and (AW)raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that (AX)You delight in me,
Because (AY)my enemy makes no shout in triumph over me.
12 As for me, (AZ)You uphold me in my integrity,
And You make me (BA)stand firm in Your presence forever.
13 (BB)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.
BOOK 2
My Soul Thirsts for God
For the choir director. A [u]Maskil of the sons of Korah.
42 As the deer [v]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul [w](BC)pants for You, O God.
2 My soul (BD)thirsts for God, for the (BE)living God;
When shall I come and [x](BF)appear before God?
3 My (BG)tears have been my food day and night,
While they (BH)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember and I (BI)pour out my soul within me.
For I (BJ)used to go along with the throng and [y]lead them in procession to the house of God,
With the sound of a (BK)shout of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.
5 (BL)Why are you [z](BM)in despair, O my soul?
And why are you (BN)disturbed within me?
(BO)Wait for God, for I shall still praise Him,
[aa]For the [ab](BP)salvation of His presence.
6 O my God, my soul is [ac]in despair within me;
Therefore I (BQ)remember You from (BR)the land of the Jordan
And the [ad]peaks of (BS)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your (BT)breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
8 By day, Yahweh will (BU)command His lovingkindness;
And (BV)by night, His song will be with me,
A prayer to (BW)the God of my life.
9 I say to God (BX)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go (BY)mourning [ae]because of the (BZ)oppression of the enemy?”
10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries reproach me,
While they (CA)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 (CB)Why are you [af]in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Wait for God, for I shall still praise Him,
The salvation of my presence and my God.
Send Out Your Light and Your Truth
43 (CC)Give justice to me, O God, and (CD)plead my case against an unholy nation;
[ag]Oh protect me from (CE)the deceitful and unrighteous man!
2 For You are the (CF)God of my strength; why have You (CG)rejected me?
Why do I go (CH)mourning [ah]because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 Oh send out Your (CI)light and Your truth, let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your (CJ)holy mountain
And to Your (CK)dwelling places.
4 Then I will go to (CL)the altar of God,
To God [ai]my exceeding (CM)joy;
And upon the (CN)lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.
5 (CO)Why are you [aj]in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Wait for God, for I shall still praise Him,
The salvation of my presence and my God.
Rise Up, Be Our Help
For the choir director. Of the sons of Korah. A [ak]Maskil.
44 O God, we have heard with our ears,
Our (CP)fathers have recounted to us
The (CQ)work that You did in their days,
In the (CR)days of old.
2 You with Your own hand (CS)dispossessed the nations;
Then You (CT)planted them;
You (CU)afflicted the peoples,
Then You (CV)cast them out.
3 For by their own sword they (CW)did not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your (CX)arm and the (CY)light of Your presence,
For You (CZ)favored them.
4 You are (DA)my King, O God;
(DB)Command [al]salvation for Jacob.
5 Through You we will (DC)push back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will (DD)tread down those who rise up against us.
6 For I will (DE)not trust in my bow,
And my sword will not save me.
7 But You (DF)have saved us from our adversaries,
And You have (DG)put to shame those who hate us.
8 In God we have (DH)boasted all day long,
And we will (DI)give thanks to Your name forever. [am]Selah.
9 Yet You (DJ)have rejected us and brought us to (DK)dishonor,
And (DL)do not go out with our armies.
10 You cause us to (DM)turn back from the adversary;
And those who hate us (DN)have plundered us for themselves.
11 You give us as (DO)sheep [an]to be eaten
And have (DP)scattered us among the nations.
12 You (DQ)sell Your people [ao]for no amount,
And You have not [ap]profited from their price.
13 You make us a (DR)reproach to our neighbors,
A mockery and a (DS)derision to those around us.
14 You make us (DT)a byword among the nations,
A [aq](DU)laughingstock among the peoples.
15 All day long my dishonor is before me
And [ar]the (DV)shame of my face has covered me,
16 Because of the voice of him who (DW)reproaches and reviles,
Because of the presence of the (DX)enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has come upon us, but we have (DY)not forgotten You,
And we have not (DZ)dealt falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not (EA)turned back,
Nor have our steps (EB)deviated from Your path,
19 Yet You have (EC)crushed us in a place of (ED)jackals
And covered us with (EE)the shadow of death.
20 If we had (EF)forgotten the name of our God
Or spread our [as]hands to (EG)a strange god,
21 Would not God (EH)find this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 But (EI)for Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are counted as (EJ)sheep for the slaughter.
23 (EK)Arouse Yourself, why (EL)do You sleep, O Lord?
Awake, (EM)do not reject us forever.
24 Why do You (EN)hide Your face
And (EO)forget our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our (EP)soul has sunk down into the dust;
Our [at]body cleaves to the earth.
26 (EQ)Rise up, be our help,
And (ER)redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
Your Throne, O God, Is Forever
For the choir director. According to [au]Shoshannim. Of the sons of Korah. A [av]Maskil. A Song of Love.
45 My heart [aw]overflows with a good theme;
I [ax]address my [ay]verses to the [az]King;
My tongue is the pen of (ES)a skillful scribe.
2 You are fairer than the sons of men;
(ET)Grace is poured [ba]upon Your lips;
Therefore God has (EU)blessed You forever.
3 Gird (EV)Your sword on Your thigh, O [bb](EW)Mighty One,
In Your splendor and Your majesty!
4 And in Your majesty ride on victoriously,
For the cause of truth and (EX)meekness and righteousness;
Let Your (EY)right hand teach You [bc]awesome things.
5 Your (EZ)arrows are sharp;
The (FA)peoples fall under You;
Your arrows are (FB)in the heart of the King’s enemies.
6 (FC)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of (FD)uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
7 You have (FE)loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has (FF)anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your companions.
8 All Your garments are fragrant with (FG)myrrh and aloes and cassia;
Out of ivory palaces (FH)stringed instruments have made You glad.
9 Kings’ daughters are among (FI)Your noble ladies;
At Your (FJ)right hand stands the queen in (FK)gold from Ophir.
10 Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear:
(FL)Forget your people and your father’s house;
11 Then the King will desire your beauty.
Because He is your (FM)Lord, (FN)bow down to Him.
12 The daughter of (FO)Tyre will come with a present;
The (FP)rich among the people will seek your favor.
13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within her chamber;
Her clothing is (FQ)interwoven with gold.
14 She will be (FR)led to the King (FS)in embroidered work;
The (FT)virgins, her companions who follow her,
Will be brought to You.
15 They will be led forth with gladness and rejoicing;
They will enter into the King’s palace.
