Psalm 17-20

Psalm 17[a]

A prayer of David.

17 Lord, consider my just cause.[b]
Pay attention to my cry for help.
Listen to the prayer
I sincerely offer.[c]
Make a just decision on my behalf.[d]
Decide what is right.[e]
You have scrutinized my inner motives;[f]
you have examined me during the night.[g]
You have carefully evaluated me, but you find no sin.
I am determined I will say nothing sinful.[h]
As for the actions of people[i]
just as you have commanded,
I have not followed in the footsteps of violent men.[j]
I carefully obey your commands;[k]
I do not deviate from them.[l]
I call to you because you will answer me, O God.
Listen to me![m]
Hear what I say![n]
Accomplish awesome, faithful deeds,[o]
you who powerfully deliver those who look to you for protection from their enemies.[p]
Protect me as you would protect the pupil of your eye.[q]
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.[r]
Protect me from[s] the wicked men who attack[t] me,
my enemies who crowd around me for the kill.[u]
10 They are calloused;[v]
they speak arrogantly.[w]
11 They attack me, now they surround me;[x]
they intend to throw me to the ground.[y]
12 He[z] is like a lion[aa] that wants to tear its prey to bits,[ab]
like a young lion crouching[ac] in hidden places.
13 Rise up, Lord!
Confront him.[ad] Knock him down.[ae]
Use your sword to rescue me from the wicked man.[af]
14 Lord, use your power to deliver me from these murderers,[ag]
from the murderers of this world.[ah]
They enjoy prosperity;[ai]
you overwhelm them with the riches they desire.[aj]
They have many children,
and leave their wealth to their offspring.[ak]
15 As for me, because I am innocent I will see your face;[al]
when I awake you will reveal yourself to me.[am]

Psalm 18[an]

For the music director, by the Lord’s servant David, who sang[ao] to the Lord the words of this song when[ap] the Lord rescued him from the power[aq] of all his enemies, including Saul.[ar]

18 He said:[as]
“I love[at] you, Lord, my source of strength![au]
The Lord is my high ridge,[av] my stronghold,[aw] my deliverer.
My God is my rocky summit where[ax] I take shelter,[ay]
my shield, the horn that saves me,[az] and my refuge.[ba]
I called[bb] to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,[bc]
and I was delivered from my enemies.
The waves[bd] of death engulfed me,
the currents[be] of chaos[bf] overwhelmed me.[bg]
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me,[bh]
the snares of death trapped me.[bi]
In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried out to my God.[bj]
From his heavenly temple[bk] he heard my voice;
he listened to my cry for help.[bl]
The earth heaved and shook.[bm]
The roots of the mountains[bn] trembled;[bo]
they heaved because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from[bp] his nose;[bq]
fire devoured as it came from his mouth.[br]
He hurled down fiery coals.[bs]
He made the sky sink[bt] as he descended;
a thick cloud was under his feet.
10 He mounted[bu] a winged angel[bv] and flew;
he glided[bw] on the wings of the wind.[bx]
11 He shrouded himself in darkness,[by]
in thick rain clouds.[bz]
12 From the brightness in front of him came
hail and fiery coals.[ca]
13 The Lord thundered[cb] in[cc] the sky;
the Most High[cd] shouted.[ce]
14 He shot his[cf] arrows and scattered them,[cg]
many lightning bolts[ch] and routed them.[ci]
15 The depths[cj] of the sea[ck] were exposed;
the inner regions[cl] of the world were uncovered
by[cm] your battle cry,[cn] Lord,
by the powerful breath from your nose.[co]
16 He reached down[cp] from above and took hold of me;
he pulled me from the surging water.[cq]
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy,[cr]
from those who hate me,
for they were too strong for me.
18 They confronted[cs] me in my day of calamity,
but the Lord helped me.[ct]
19 He brought me out into a wide open place;
he delivered me because he was pleased with me.[cu]
20 The Lord repaid[cv] me for my godly deeds;[cw]
he rewarded[cx] my blameless behavior.[cy]
21 For I have obeyed the Lord’s commands;[cz]
I have not rebelled against my God.[da]
22 For I am aware of all his regulations,[db]
and I do not reject his rules.[dc]
23 I was innocent before him,
and kept myself from sinning.[dd]
24 The Lord rewarded me for my godly deeds;[de]
he took notice of my blameless behavior.[df]
25 You prove to be loyal[dg] to one who is faithful;[dh]
you prove to be trustworthy[di] to one who is innocent.[dj]
26 You prove to be reliable[dk] to one who is blameless,
but you prove to be deceptive[dl] to one who is perverse.[dm]
27 For you deliver oppressed[dn] people,
but you bring down those who have a proud look.[do]
28 Indeed,[dp] you light my lamp, Lord.[dq]
My God[dr] illuminates the darkness around me.[ds]
29 Indeed,[dt] with your help[du] I can charge against[dv] an army;[dw]
by my God’s power[dx] I can jump over a wall.[dy]
30 The one true God acts in a faithful manner;[dz]
the Lord’s promise[ea] is reliable.[eb]
He is a shield to all who take shelter[ec] in him.
31 Indeed,[ed] who is God besides the Lord?
Who is a protector[ee] besides our God?[ef]
32 The one true God[eg] gives[eh] me strength;[ei]
he removes[ej] the obstacles in my way.[ek]
33 He gives me the agility of a deer;[el]
he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.[em]
34 He trains my hands for battle;[en]
my arms can bend even the strongest bow.[eo]
35 You give me your protective shield;[ep]
your right hand supports me.[eq]
Your willingness to help[er] enables me to prevail.[es]
36 You widen my path;[et]
my feet[eu] do not slip.
37 I chase my enemies and catch[ev] them;
I do not turn back until I wipe them out.
38 I beat them[ew] to death;[ex]
they fall at my feet.[ey]
39 You give me strength[ez] for battle;
you make my foes kneel before me.[fa]
40 You make my enemies retreat;[fb]
I destroy those who hate me.[fc]
41 They cry out, but there is no one to help them;[fd]
they cry out to the Lord,[fe] but he does not answer them.
42 I grind them as fine windblown dust;[ff]
I beat them underfoot[fg] like clay[fh] in the streets.
43 You rescue me from a hostile army.[fi]
You make me[fj] a leader of nations;
people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects.[fk]
44 When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me.[fl]
Foreigners are powerless[fm] before me.
45 Foreigners lose their courage;[fn]
they shake with fear[fo] as they leave[fp] their strongholds.[fq]
46 The Lord is alive![fr]
My Protector[fs] is praiseworthy.[ft]
The God who delivers me[fu] is exalted as king.[fv]
47 The one true God[fw] completely vindicates me;[fx]
he makes nations submit to me.[fy]
48 He delivers me[fz] from my enemies.
You snatch me away[ga] from those who attack me;[gb]
you rescue me from violent men.
49 So I will give you thanks before the nations,[gc] O Lord.
I will sing praises to you.[gd]
50 He[ge] gives his king magnificent victories;[gf]
he is faithful[gg] to his chosen ruler,[gh]
to David and his descendants[gi] forever.”[gj]

Psalm 19[gk]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God;[gl]
the sky displays his handiwork.[gm]
Day after day it speaks out;[gn]
night after night it reveals his greatness.[go]
There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its[gp] voice literally heard.
Yet its voice[gq] echoes[gr] throughout the earth;
its[gs] words carry[gt] to the distant horizon.[gu]
In the sky[gv] he has pitched a tent for the sun.[gw]
Like a bridegroom it emerges[gx] from its chamber;[gy]
like a strong man it enjoys[gz] running its course.[ha]
It emerges from the distant horizon,[hb]
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;[hc]
nothing can escape[hd] its heat.
The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[he]
The rules set down by the Lord[hf] are reliable[hg]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[hh]
The Lord’s precepts are fair[hi]
and make one joyful.[hj]
The Lord’s commands[hk] are pure[hl]
and give insight for life.[hm]
The commands to fear the Lord are right[hn]
and endure forever.[ho]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[hp]
10 They are of greater value[hq] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[hr] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[hs]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[ht]
12 Who can know all his errors?[hu]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[hv]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[hw]
do not allow such sins to control me.[hx]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[hy] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[hz]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[ia] and my redeemer.[ib]

Psalm 20[ic]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

20 May the Lord answer[id] you[ie] when you are in trouble;[if]
may the God of Jacob[ig] make you secure.
May he send you help from his temple;[ih]
from Zion may he give you support.
May he take notice of[ii] all your offerings;
may he accept[ij] your burnt sacrifice. (Selah)
May he grant your heart’s desire;[ik]
may he bring all your plans to pass.[il]
Then we will shout for joy over your[im] victory;
we will rejoice[in] in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
Now I am sure[io] that the Lord will deliver[ip] his chosen king;[iq]
he will intervene for him[ir] from his holy, heavenly temple,[is]
and display his mighty ability to deliver.[it]
Some trust in chariots and others in horses,[iu]
but we[iv] depend on[iw] the Lord our God.
They will fall down,[ix]
but we[iy] will stand firm.[iz]
The Lord will deliver the king;[ja]
he will answer us[jb] when we call to him for help![jc]
