Psalm 96[a]
God, Sovereign and Judge of the Universe
1 Sing to the Lord a new song;[b]
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord and bless his name;
proclaim his salvation[c] day after day.
3 Declare his glory[d] among the nations,
his wondrous deeds to every people.
4 For great is the Lord and worthy of all praise;
he is more to be feared[e] than all other gods.
5 The gods of the nations are merely idols,
but it was the Lord who made the heavens.[f]
6 Majesty and splendor surround him;
power and beauty[g] are in his sanctuary.
7 Render to the Lord, you families of nations,
render to the Lord glory and power.[h]
8 Render to the Lord the glory due to his name;
bring an offering and enter his courts.[i]
9 Worship[j] the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord is King.[k]
The world is firmly established, never to be moved.
He will judge the peoples fairly.”
11 Let the heavens exult and the earth be glad;
let the sea resound and all that fills it.
12 Let the fields rejoice and all that is in them;
let all the trees[l] of the forest shout for joy
13 before the Lord, for he is coming,
coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice
and the nations with equity.[m]
Psalm 97[n]
Divine King and Universal Judge
1 The Lord is King;[o] let the earth exult;
let the distant isles rejoice.
2 [p]Clouds and darkness[q] surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire[r] precedes him,
consuming his enemies on every side.
4 His flashes of lightnwing illumine the world;
the earth sees this and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,[s]
and all the nations behold his glory.
7 All who worship images are put to shame,
those who boast of their worthless idols;
bow down before him, all you gods.[t]
8 Zion hears and rejoices,
and the cities[u] of Judah exult
because of your judgments, O Lord.
9 For you, O Lord, are the Most High over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.
10 [v]Let those who love the Lord hate evil,
for he protects the souls of his faithful ones
and rescues them from the hand of the wicked.
11 [w]Light dawns for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name.
Psalm 98[x]
Praise of the Lord, King and Judge
1 A psalm.
Sing to the Lord a new song,[y]
for he has accomplished marvelous deeds.
His right hand and his holy arm
have made him victorious.
2 The Lord has made known his salvation;
he has manifested his righteousness for all the nations to see.[z]
3 He has remembered his kindness[aa] and his fidelity
to the house of Israel.
The farthest ends of the earth have witnessed
the salvation of our God.
4 Sing joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
raise your voices in songs of praise.
5 Sing praise to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and melodious singing.
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
sing joyfully to the King, the Lord.[ab]
7 [ac]Let the sea resound and everything in it,
the world[ad] and all its inhabitants.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands
and the mountains shout for joy.
9 Let them sing before the Lord, who is coming,
coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with justice
and the nations with fairness.[ae]
Psalm 99[af]
God, King of Justice and Holiness
1 The Lord is King;[ag]
let the nations tremble.
He sits enthroned on the cherubim;
let the earth quake.
2 The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted above all the peoples.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name:[ah]
holy is he!
4 Mighty King, you love justice,
and you have established fairness;
in Jacob[ai] you have brought about
what is just and right.
5 Exalt the Lord, our God,
and worship at his footstool;
holy is he![aj]
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
and Samuel was among those who invoked his name;
they cried out to the Lord,
and he answered them.[ak]
7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;[al]
they obeyed his decrees and the law he gave them.
8 O Lord, our God,
you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but you punished their wrongdoings.[am]
9 Exalt the Lord, our God,
and worship at his holy mountain,
for the Lord, our God, is holy.[an]
Psalm 100[ao]
Processional Entrance Hymn
1 A psalm of thanksgiving.[ap]
Acclaim the Lord[aq] with joy, all the earth;
2 serve the Lord[ar] with gladness;
enter his presence with songs of joy.
3 Proclaim that the Lord is God.[as]
He made us and we are his possession;
we are his people, the flock he shepherds.
4 Offer thanksgiving as you enter his gates,[at]
sing hymns of praise as you approach his courts;
give thanks to him and bless his name,
5 for the Lord is good.
His kindness endures forever,
and his faithfulness is constant to all generations.[au]
Psalm 101[av]
Norm of Life for a Good Ruler
1 A psalm of David.
I will sing of kindness and justice;
to you, O Lord, I will offer praise in song.
2 I will walk in the path of blamelessness;
when will you come to me?[aw]
Within my house[ax] I will act
with integrity of heart.
3 I will not allow any shameful act
to be done before my eyes.
[ay]I will refuse to associate
with people who do evil.
4 Let the perverse of heart remain far from me;
I will not tolerate the wicked.
5 [az]Anyone who secretly slanders a neighbor
I will reduce to silence.
Anyone with haughty glances and an arrogant heart
I cannot endure.
6 The faithful in the land are the ones
whom I will choose to be my companions.
Only the one who follows the path of integrity
will be allowed to be my servant.
7 No one who practices deceit
will be permitted to remain in my house.
No one who utters lies
will be numbered among my companions.[ba]
8 Morning after morning[bb] I will banish
all the wicked from the land,
removing all evildoers from the city of the Lord.
Psalm 102[bc]
Prayer of an Exile
1 The prayer of one afflicted. When he is wasting away[bd] and pours out his anguish before the Lord.
2 [be]O Lord, give heed to my prayer;
let my plea for help reach you.
3 Do not conceal your face[bf] from my sight
in the time of my distress.
Incline your ear to me;
on the day when I call out to you, answer me speedily.
4 For my days are fading away like smoke,
and my bones are burning like live coals.
5 My heart[bg] is stricken, withered like grass;
I am too exhausted to eat my bread.
6 As a result of my incessant groaning,
I am now nothing more than skin and bones.
7 I am like a pelican[bh] of the wilderness,
like an owl among the ruins.
8 I am sleepless[bi] and I moan
like a lone sparrow on a rooftop.
9 All day long my enemies revile me;[bj]
those who rage against me use my name as a curse.
10 [bk]I eat ashes as though they were bread,
and I mingle tears with my drink.
11 Because of your indignation and wrath,
you have raised me up only to cast me down.
12 My days are like a lengthening shadow,
and I am withering away like grass.
13 [bl]But, you, O Lord, are enthroned forever,
and your renown will endure for all generations.
14 You will arise and show mercy to Zion,
for it is time for you to have pity on her;
the appointed time[bm] has come.
15 For her stones are precious to your servants,
and her dust causes them to weep.[bn]
16 The nations will revere your name,[bo] O Lord,
and all the kings of the earth will sing of your glory.
17 For the Lord will rebuild Zion
and reveal himself in all his glory.[bp]
18 He will answer the prayer of the destitute,
and he will not ignore their petition.
19 Let this be written[bq] for future generations
so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord:
20 “The Lord looked down from his sanctuary on high
and gazed on the earth from heaven,
21 to hear the sighs of the prisoners
and to set free those under sentence of death.”[br]
22 Then the name of the Lord will be proclaimed in Zion,
and his praise[bs] in Jerusalem
23 when all peoples and kingdoms come together
to worship the Lord.[bt]
24 [bu]He has taken away my strength on my life’s journey;
he has cut short my days.
25 So I said: “Do not carry me off, O my God,
before half my days are done,[bv]
for your years endure from age to age.
26 [bw]“Long ago you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
27 They will pass away but you endure;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You will change them like clothing,
and they will perish.[bx]
28 “However, you remain always the same,
and your years will have no end.[by]
29 The children of your servants will be secure,
and their descendants will dwell in your presence.”[bz]
