Psalm 72

Give the King Your Judgments

Of Solomon.

72 O God, give the king (A)Your judgments,
And (B)Your righteousness to the king’s son.
[a]May [b]he (C)render judgment to Your people with righteousness
And (D)Your [c]afflicted with justice.
Let the mountains lift up [d](E)peace to the people,
And the hills, in righteousness.
[e]May he (F)give justice to the [f]afflicted of the people,
Save the children of the needy,
And crush the oppressor.

[g]Let them fear You (G)while the sun endures,
And [h]as long as the moon, from generation to all generations.
[i]May he come down (H)like rain upon the mown grass,
Like (I)showers that water the earth.
[j]May the (J)righteous flourish in his days,
And (K)abundance of peace until the moon is no more.

May he also have dominion (L)from sea to sea
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
[k]Let (M)the desert creatures (N)kneel before him,
And his enemies (O)lick the dust.
10 [l]Let the kings of (P)Tarshish and of the (Q)coastlands bring a present;
The kings of (R)Sheba and (S)Seba (T)offer tribute.
11 [m]And let all (U)kings bow down to him,
All (V)nations serve him.

12 For he will (W)deliver the needy when he cries for help,
The [n]afflicted also, and him who has no helper.
13 He will have (X)compassion on the poor and needy,
And the [o]lives of the needy he will save.
14 He will (Y)redeem their [p]life from oppression and violence,
And their blood will be (Z)precious in his sight;
15 So may he live! And may they give to him the (AA)gold of Sheba;
And let each pray for him continually;
Let each bless him all day long.

16 May there be abundance of grain in the earth on top of the mountains;
May its fruit wave like the cedars of (AB)Lebanon;
And may those from the city blossom like (AC)vegetation of the earth.
17 May his (AD)name endure forever;
May his name [q]increase [r](AE)as long as the sun shines;
Let all nations [s](AF)be blessed in him;
(AG)Let all nations call him blessed.

18 (AH)Blessed be Yahweh God, the God of Israel,
Who alone (AI)works wondrous deeds.
19 And blessed be His (AJ)glorious name forever;
And may the whole (AK)earth be filled with His glory.
(AL)Amen, and Amen.

20 [t]The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are completed.

1 Samuel 1:1-20

Elkanah and His Wives

Now there was a certain man from (A)Ramathaim-zophim from the (B)hill country of Ephraim, and his name was (C)Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. Now he had (D)two wives: the name of one was (E)Hannah and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

Now that man would go up from his city (F)yearly (G)to worship and to sacrifice to [a]Yahweh of hosts in (H)Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to Yahweh there. And the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, and he (I)would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters; but to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, (J)but Yahweh had closed her womb. Her rival, however, (K)would provoke her bitterly to irritate her because Yahweh had closed her womb. And so it would happen year after year, as often as she went up to the house of Yahweh, she would provoke her; so she wept and would not eat. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep and why do you not eat and why is your heart sad? (L)Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

Then Hannah rose after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of (M)the temple of Yahweh. 10 And she, bitter of soul, prayed to Yahweh and wept despondently. 11 And she (N)made a vow and said, “O Yahweh of hosts, if You will indeed (O)look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a seed amongst men, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and (P)a razor shall never come on his head.”

12 Now it happened, as she multiplied her praying before Yahweh, that Eli was watching her mouth. 13 As for Hannah, (Q)she was speaking in her heart; only her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard. So Eli thought she was drunk. 14 Then Eli said to her, “(R)How long will you make yourself drunk? Put away your wine from you.” 15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman [b]oppressed in spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I (S)have poured out my soul before Yahweh. 16 Do not [c]consider your maidservant as a vile woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great complaint and [d]provocation.” 17 Then Eli answered and said, “(T)Go in peace; and may the God of Israel (U)grant your petition that you have asked of Him.” 18 And she said, “(V)Let your servant-woman find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate, and (W)her face was no longer sad.

The Birth of Samuel

19 Then they arose early in the morning and worshiped before Yahweh and turned back and came to their house in (X)Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and (Y)Yahweh remembered her. 20 Now it happened [e]in due time that Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “(Z)Because I have asked him of Yahweh.”

Hebrews 3:1-6

Jesus Greater than Moses

Therefore, (A)holy brothers, partakers of a (B)heavenly calling, consider (C)the Apostle and (D)High Priest of our (E)confession—Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (F)Moses also was in all His house. (G)For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, in so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. Now (H)Moses was faithful in all His house as (I)a servant, (J)for a testimony of those things (K)which were to be spoken later, but Christ was faithful as (L)a Son over His house—(M)whose house we are, (N)if we hold fast our (O)confidence and the boast of our (P)hope.

Psalm 146-147

I Will Praise Yahweh Throughout My Life

146 [a]Praise Yah!
(A)Praise Yahweh, O my soul!
I will praise Yahweh (B)throughout my life;
I will (C)sing praises to my God while I have my being.
(D)Do not trust in nobles,
In merely a son of (E)man, in whom there is (F)no salvation.
His (G)spirit departs, he (H)returns to [b]the earth;
In that very day his (I)plans perish.
How (J)blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose (K)hope is in Yahweh his God,
Who (L)made heaven and earth,
The (M)sea and all that is in them;
Who (N)keeps truth forever;
Who (O)does justice for the oppressed;
Who (P)gives food to the hungry.
Yahweh (Q)sets the prisoners free.

Yahweh (R)opens the eyes of the blind;
Yahweh (S)raises up those who are bowed down;
Yahweh (T)loves the righteous;
Yahweh (U)keeps the sojourners;
He [c](V)helps up the orphan and the widow,
But He bends (W)the way of the wicked.
10 Yahweh will (X)reign forever,
Your God, O Zion, [d]from generation to generation.
[e]Praise Yah!

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147 [f]Praise Yah!
For (Y)it is good to sing praises to our God;
For [g]it is pleasant and praise is (Z)becoming.
Yahweh (AA)builds up Jerusalem;
He (AB)gathers the [h]outcasts of Israel.
He is the One who heals the (AC)brokenhearted
And who (AD)binds up their [i]wounds,
Who (AE)counts the number of the stars;
He [j](AF)gives names to all of them.
(AG)Great is our Lord and abundant in power;
His (AH)discernment is [k]infinite.
Yahweh [l](AI)helps up the afflicted;
He brings down the wicked to the ground.

(AJ)Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving;
Sing praises to our God on the lyre.
He is the One who (AK)covers the heavens with clouds,
The One who (AL)provides rain for the earth,
The One who (AM)makes grass to sprout on the mountains,
Who (AN)gives to the animal its food,
And to the (AO)young ravens which call out.
10 He does not delight in the might of the (AP)horse;
He (AQ)does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 Yahweh (AR)is pleased with those who fear Him,
(AS)Those who wait for His lovingkindness.

12 Laud Yahweh, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He strengthened the (AT)bars of your gates;
He (AU)blessed your sons within you.
14 He is the One who (AV)sets [m]peace in your borders,
He (AW)satisfies you with (AX)the [n]finest of the wheat,
15 The One who sends forth His (AY)command to the earth;
His (AZ)word runs very swiftly,
16 The One who gives (BA)snow like wool;
He scatters the (BB)frost like ashes,
17 Who casts forth His (BC)ice as fragments;
Who can stand before His (BD)cold?
18 He (BE)sends forth His word and melts them;
He (BF)causes His wind to blow and so the waters flow,
19 Who (BG)declares His words to Jacob,
His (BH)statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 He (BI)has not done so with any nation;
So as for His judgments, they have (BJ)not known them.
[o]Praise Yah!

John 3:25-30

25 Therefore there arose a debate between John’s disciples and a Jew about (A)purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “(B)Rabbi, He who was with you (C)beyond the Jordan, to whom you (D)have borne witness, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” 27 John answered and said, “(E)A man can receive nothing unless it (F)has been given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves [a]are my witnesses that I said, ‘(G)I am not the [b]Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is (H)the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this (I)joy of mine has been made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
