A Promise to Rule Well

A psalm of David.

101 I will sing of your ·love [loyalty] and ·fairness [justice; judgment];
    Lord, I will ·sing praises [make a psalm] to you.
I will ·be careful to live [lead; or study] ·an innocent life [the way that is blameless].
    When will ·you [or it; C the “way that is blameless”] come to me?

I will ·live [go; walk] ·an innocent life [L in the blamelessness of my heart] in my house.
    I will not ·look at [L set before my eyes] anything ·wicked [vile].
I hate those who ·turn against you [are crooked/transgressors];
    they will not ·be found near [cling to] me.
Let those who ·want to do wrong [L have a perverse heart] stay away from me;
    I ·will have nothing to do with [L do not know] evil.
If anyone secretly ·says things against [slanders] his neighbor,
    I will ·stop [destroy; silence] him.
I will not allow people
    to ·be proud [L have broad hearts] and ·look down on others [L haughty eyes; 131:1].

·I will look for trustworthy people [L My eyes are on the faithful of the land]
    so ·I can live with them [L they may dwell with me].
Only those who ·live innocent lives [L walk in the way of blamelessness]
    will ·be my servants [L serve me].
No one who ·is dishonest [deceives] will live in my house;
    no ·liars [L one who speaks falsehoods] will ·stay around me [L be established before my eyes].
Every morning I will ·destroy [silence] all the wicked in the land.
    I will ·rid [cut off] the Lord’s city [C Jerusalem; 46:4] of people who do evil.

Psalm 109:1-30

A Prayer Against an Enemy

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

109 God, I praise you.
    Do not be silent.
·Wicked [L The mouth of evil] people and ·liars [L the mouth of deceivers] have ·spoken [L opened] against me;
    they ·have told lies about me [L speak against me with lying tongues].
They have ·said hateful things about me [L surrounded me with hateful words]
    and attack me for no reason.
They ·attacked [accuse; charge] me, ·even though I loved them
    and prayed for them [in return for my love and prayer].
I was good to them, but they ·repay [reward] me with evil.
    I loved them, but they hate me in return.

They say about me [C this added phrase suggests another speaker, or perhaps the psalmist is speaking about his accusers], “·Have an evil person work [L Appoint an evil person] against him,
    and let an ·accuser [adversary] stand ·against him [L at his right hand; Job 1:6].
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
    and let even his prayers ·show [be counted as] his ·guilt [sin].
Let his ·life [L days] be ·cut short [brief],
    and let another man ·replace him as leader [take his position/office; Acts 1:20].
Let his children become orphans
    and his wife a widow [C socially vulnerable, dependent on others].
10 Make his children wander around, begging for food [Jer. 18:21].
    Let them be forced out of the ruins in which they live.
11 Let ·the people to whom he owes money [creditors] ·take [ensnare] everything he owns [2 Kin. 4:1],
    and let strangers ·steal [plunder] everything he has worked for.
12 Let no one ·show [extend to] him ·love [loyalty]
    or have ·mercy [compassion] on his orphaned children.
13 Let all his descendants ·die [L be cut off]
    and ·be forgotten [L their name be blotted/wiped out] by ·those who live after him [L a later generation].
14 Lord, ·remember how wicked his ancestors were [L let the guilt of his fathers be remembered],
    and don’t let the sins of his mother be ·wiped [blotted] out.
15 ·Lord, always remember their sins [L Let them be before the Lord forever].
    ·Then make people forget about them completely [L Let memory of them be cut off from the land].

16 “He did not remember to be ·loving [loyal].
    He ·hurt [persecuted; L pursued] the poor, the needy, and those who were ·sad [depressed; L brokenhearted]
    ·until they were nearly dead [L to their death].
17 He loved to put curses on others,
    so let those same curses ·fall on [L come to] him.
He did not like to bless others,
    so ·do not let good things happen to him [L let them (blessings) be far from him].
18 He ·cursed others as often as he wore clothes [L wore curses like a coat].
    ·Cursing others filled his body and his life,
    like drinking water and using olive oil [L Let them come like water in his innards and like oil in his bones].
19 So let curses ·cover [wrap] him like ·clothes [a garment]
    and ·wrap around him like a belt [L continually gird him].”
20 May the Lord do these things to those who ·accuse [charge] me,
    to those who speak evil against me.

21 But you, Lord God,
    ·be kind to me so others will know you are good [L act on my behalf for the sake of your name].
    Because your ·love [loyalty] is good, ·save [protect] me.
22 I am poor and helpless
    and ·very sad [L my heart is pierced/wounded in me].
23 I am ·dying [L gone] like an evening shadow;
    I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees ·are weak [buckle; stumble] from fasting,
    and ·I have grown thin [L my flesh is lean of fat].
25 ·My enemies insult me [L I am a reproach to them];
    they look at me and shake their heads [C in scorn].

26 Lord my God, help me;
    because you are ·loving [loyal], ·save me [give me victory].
27 Then they will know that ·your power has done this [L this is your hand];
    they will know that you have done it, Lord.
28 They may curse me, but you bless me.
    They may ·attack [L rise against] me, but they will be ·disgraced [embarrassed].
    Then I, your servant, will be glad.
29 Let those who ·accuse [charge; attack] me be ·disgraced [L clothed with disgrace]
    and ·covered [wrapped up] with shame like a coat.

30 I will ·thank [praise] the Lord very much [L with my mouth];
    I will praise him in ·front [the midst] of many people.

Psalm 119:121-144

121 I have done what is ·fair [just] and ·right [righteous].
    Don’t leave me to ·those who wrong me [my oppressors/exploiters].
122 ·Promise that you will help me, [L Stand as security for/Guarantee good for] your servant.
    Don’t let ·proud [arrogant] people ·wrong [oppress; exploit] me.
123 My eyes ·are tired from looking [fail; grow weak] for your ·salvation [victory]
    and for your good promise.
124 ·Show your love to me, your servant [Deal with your servant according to your love/loyalty],
    and teach me your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
125 I am your servant. ·Give me wisdom [Make me understand]
    so I can ·understand [know] your ·rules [decrees; testimonies].
126 Lord, it is time for you to do something,
    because ·people have disobeyed your teachings [L your teachings/instructions/laws have been broken].
127 I love your commands
    more than ·the purest gold [L gold, the finest gold].
128 I ·respect [or follow] all your ·orders [precepts],
    so I hate ·lying [false] ways.

129 Your ·rules [decrees; testimonies] are wonderful.
    That is why I ·keep [protect] them.

137 Lord, you ·do what is right [are righteous],
    and your ·laws [judgments] are ·fair [virtuous; upright].
138 ·The rules [L Your decrees/testimonies] you commanded are ·right [righteous]
    and completely ·trustworthy [true; faithful].
139 ·I am so upset I am worn out [L My passion/zeal consumes; or silences me],
    because my ·enemies [foes] have forgotten your words.
140 Your promises are ·proven [refined],
    so I, your servant, love them.
141 I am ·unimportant [small] and ·hated [despised],
    but I have not forgotten your ·orders [precepts].
142 Your ·goodness continues forever [righteousness is an everlasting righteousness],
    and your ·teachings [instructions; laws] are ·true [faithful].
143 ·I have had troubles and misery [L Distress and pressure have found me],

Isaiah 63:15-64:9

A Prayer for Help

15 Lord, look down from the heavens and see;
    look at us from your ·wonderful [glorious] and holy ·home [abode] in heaven.
Where is your ·strong love [zeal] and power?
    Why are you ·keeping [holding back] your ·love [tenderness] and ·mercy [compassion] from us?
16 You are our father.
    [L …though] Abraham doesn’t know ·we are his children [L us],
    and Israel doesn’t recognize us.
Lord, you are our father.
    ·You are called [or Your name is] “·the one who has always saved us [our redeemer from of old].”
17 Lord, why are you making us wander from your ways?
    Why do you make ·us stubborn [L our hearts hard] so that we don’t ·honor [fear] you?
For our sake come back to us,
    your servants, ·who belong to you [L the tribes of your inheritance].
18 Your ·people [or holy people] had ·your Temple [possession of your holy place; or possession of a land] for a while,
    but now our enemies have ·walked on your holy place and crushed it [trampled down your sanctuary].
19 We have become like people you never ruled over,
    like those who have never ·worn [been called by] your name.

64 If only you would tear open the ·skies [heavens] and come down to earth
    so that the mountains would ·tremble [shake] before you.
Like a fire that ·burns [kindles; ignites] ·twigs [dry wood],
    like a fire that makes water boil,
let your ·enemies [adversaries] know ·who you are [L your name].
    Then all nations will shake with fear ·when they see you [before you].
You have done amazing things ·we did not expect [beyond our expectations].
    You came down, and the mountains trembled before you.
From ·long ago [ancient times; of old] no ·one [L ear] has ever heard of a God like you.

You help those who ·enjoy doing good [joyfully act righteously],

    For a long time we disobeyed,
    so how can we be saved?
All of us ·are dirty with sin [became like an unclean/defiled thing].
    All ·the right things we have done [our righteous deeds] are like ·filthy pieces of cloth [filthy garments/rags; or a menstrual cloth; 30:22].
All of us ·are [fade; shrivel] like dead leaves,
    and our ·sins [iniquities], like the wind, have carried us away.
No one ·worships you [L calls on your name]
    or ·even asks you to help us [L rouses himself to lay hold of you].
That is because you have ·turned away [hidden your face] from us
    and have ·let our sins destroy us [given us over to our sins].[a]

But Lord, you are our father.
    We are like clay, and you are the potter;
    your hands made us all.
Lord, don’t continue to be angry with us;
    don’t remember our sins forever.
Please, look at us,
    because we are your people.

1 Timothy 3

Elders in the Church

·What I say is true [or This saying/word is trustworthy; 1:15; 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:11; Titus 3:8]: Anyone ·wanting [aspiring] to become an ·overseer [T bishop; C perhaps the same as elder; 3:6, 7; 5:17; Titus 1:5–6] desires a ·good [honorable; noble] ·work [role; position]. An overseer must ·not give people a reason to criticize him [have a good reputation; be above reproach], and he must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to his wife]. He must be ·self-controlled [sober], ·wise [have good judgment], respected by others, ·ready to welcome guests [hospitable], and able to teach. He must not drink too much wine or ·like to fight [be violent/a troublemaker], but rather be gentle and ·peaceable [not quarrelsome/contentious], not ·loving money [avaricious; greedy]. He must ·be a good family leader [L manage/lead his own household well], having children ·who cooperate with full respect [who obey and respect him; or whom he controls with dignity]. (If someone does not know how to ·lead [manage] his own ·family [household], how can that person take care of God’s church?) But an elder must not be a ·new believer [recent convert], or he might ·be too proud of himself [become arrogant] and ·be judged guilty just as the devil was [or incur the same punishment as the devil; 1:20]. An elder must also have ·the respect of [a good reputation among] ·people who are not in the church [L outsiders] so he will not ·be criticized by others [fall into disgrace; be caught in a scandal] ·and [or and in this way] ·caught [ensnared] in the devil’s trap.

Deacons in the Church

In the same way, deacons must be ·respected by others [dignified], not ·saying things they do not mean [insincere; two-faced; deceitful]. They must not drink too much wine or ·try to get rich by cheating others [be greedy for money/profit]. With a clear conscience they must ·follow [hold on to] ·the secret of the faith that God made known to us [or God’s revealed truths; L the mystery of the faith; C a mystery being something previously unknown but now revealed by God; Eph. 1:9]. 10 Test them first. Then let them serve as deacons if you find ·nothing wrong in them [them blameless]. 11 In the same way, ·women [or women who are deacons; or deacon’s wives] must be ·respected by others [dignified]. They must not ·speak evil of others [be slanderers/gossips]. They must be ·self-controlled [sober] and ·trustworthy [honest; faithful] in everything. 12 Deacons must ·have only one wife [or be faithful to their wife] and be good ·leaders [managers] of their children and their own ·families [households]. 13 Those who serve well as deacons ·are making an honorable place [gain good standing] for themselves, and they will ·be very bold [or have greater confidence/assurance] in their faith in Christ Jesus.

The Secret of Our Life

14 Although I hope I can come to you ·soon [quickly], I am writing these things to you now. 15 Then, even if I am delayed, you will know ·how [L how it is necessary] to live in the ·family [household] of God, which is the ·church [assembly] of the living God, the ·support [pillar] and foundation of the truth. 16 ·Without doubt [or And we all agree], ·the secret of our life of worship [or the truth revealed in our faith/worship; L the mystery of godliness; v. 9] is great [C what follows may be from an early Christian hymn]:

He[a] ·was shown to us [appeared; was revealed] in ·a human body [T the flesh],
    ·proved right [vindicated] ·in spirit [or by the Spirit],
and seen by angels.
    He was proclaimed ·to [among] the ·nations [Gentiles],
believed in ·by [or in; throughout] the world,
    and taken up in glory.

Mark 11:27-12:12

Leaders Doubt Jesus’ Authority(A)

27 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went again to Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the Temple [complex; area; courts; see 11:15], the ·leading [T chief] priests, the ·teachers of the law [scribes], and the elders came to him. 28 They said to him, “What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”

29 Jesus answered, “I will ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you what authority I have to do these things. 30 Tell me: When John baptized people, was that authority from ·God [L heaven; C a reverential Jewish way of referring to God] or just from ·other people [human beings]?”

31 They argued about Jesus’ question, saying, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from ·God [L heaven],’ Jesus will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘It was from ·other people [human beings],’ the crowd will be against us.” (These leaders were afraid of the people, because all the people believed that John was a prophet.)

33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said to them, “Then I won’t tell you what authority I have to do these things.”

The Story of the Evil Farmers(B)

12 [Then] Jesus began ·to use stories to teach the people [L to speak to them in parables; see 3:23]. He said, “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it and dug a ·hole [vat; pit] for a winepress and built a tower [C to protect against thieves; see Is. 5:1–7 for the background to this parable]. Then he leased the land to some [C tenant] farmers and left for a trip [C the owner represents God, the farmers are Israel’s religious leaders]. When it was time for the grapes to be picked, he sent a ·servant [slave] to the farmers to get his share of the grapes. But the farmers grabbed ·the servant [L him] and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then the man sent another ·servant [slave]. They ·hit [beat] him on the head and ·showed no respect for [humiliated; dishonored] him. So the man sent another, whom they killed. The man sent many others; the farmers beat some of them and killed others [C the servants represent the prophets God sent to Israel].

“The man had one person left to send, his son whom he loved [C representing Jesus; see 1:11; 9:7]. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But the farmers said to each other, ‘This son will inherit the vineyard. Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they took the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“So what will the ·owner [lord] of the vineyard do? He will come and ·kill [destroy] those farmers and will give the vineyard to ·other farmers [L others; C referring to the sinners who were responding to Jesus’ call for repentance, and eventually to the Gentiles who would be saved]. 10 ·Surely you have read [L Have you never read…?] this Scripture:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
    became the ·cornerstone [capstone; keystone; L head of the corner; C the meaning is uncertain, but clearly refers to the most important stone in the building; Jesus is the rejected stone].
11 The Lord did this,
    and it is ·wonderful [amazing; marvelous] ·to us [for us to see; L in our eyes; Ps. 118:22–23].’”

12 The Jewish leaders knew that the ·story [parable] was about them. So they ·wanted to find a way [were seeking/trying] to arrest Jesus, but they were afraid of the people. So the leaders left him and went away.
