Psalm 30

Thanksgiving for Escaping Death

A psalm of David. A song for ·giving the Temple to the Lord [L the dedication of the Temple; C perhaps written by David in anticipation of the dedication of the Temple under Solomon; the connection with healing is uncertain].

30 I will ·praise [L exalt] you, Lord,
    because you ·rescued me [L brought me up].
    You did not let my enemies ·laugh at [rejoice over] me.
Lord, my God, I ·prayed to you [cried to you for help],
    and you healed me.
You lifted me out of ·the grave [or the underworld; L Sheol];
    you spared me from going down to the ·place of the dead [L Pit; 16:10].

Sing praises to the Lord, you ·who belong to him [loyal ones; saints];
    ·praise [give thanks to] his holy name.
His anger lasts only a moment,
    but his ·kindness [favor] lasts for a lifetime.
Crying may last for a night,
    but joy comes in the morning.

When I ·felt safe [or was prosperous], I said,
    “I will never ·fear [L be moved].”
Lord, in your ·kindness [favor] you made my mountain ·safe [L stand; C God made him prosperous and safe].
    But when you ·turned away [L hid your face; C because he became self-reliant, v. 6], I was ·frightened [terrified; or discouraged].

I ·called [prayed] to you, Lord,
    and ·asked you to have mercy on me [made supplication].
I said, “What ·good will it do if I die [profit is there for you in my blood]
    or if I go down to ·the grave [corruption; destruction]?

    ·it cannot [L will it…?] speak about your ·truth [faithfulness].
10 Lord, hear me and have mercy on me.
    Lord, help me.”

11 You changed my ·sorrow [mourning] into dancing.
    You took away my ·clothes of sadness [sackcloth],
    and clothed me in ·happiness [joy].
12 I will sing to you and not be silent.
    Lord, my God, I will ·praise you [give you thanks] forever.

Psalm 32

It Is Better to Confess Sin

A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of David.

32 ·Happy [Blessed] is the person
    whose ·sins [transgressions] are forgiven,
    whose ·wrongs [sins] are ·pardoned [L covered].
·Happy [Blessed] is the person
    whom the Lord ·does not consider guilty [imputes no guilt to]
and in ·whom [L whose spirit] there is nothing ·false [deceptive].

When I kept ·things to myself [silent],
    ·I felt weak deep inside me [L my bones wasted away].
    I ·moaned [sighed] all day long.
Day and night ·you punished me [L your hand was heavy on me].
    My strength was ·gone [dried up; sapped] as in the summer heat. ·Selah [Interlude]
Then I ·confessed [made known; disclosed] my sins to you
    and didn’t ·hide [cover up] my guilt.
I said, “I will confess my ·sins [transgressions] to the Lord,”

For this reason, all ·who obey you [your saints/holy ones]

When troubles rise like a flood,
    they will not reach them.
You are my hiding place.
    You protect me from ·my troubles [distress]

The Lord says, “I will ·make you wise [instruct you] and ·show [teach] you ·where to [L the way you should] go.

So don’t be like a horse or donkey,
    that doesn’t understand.

    or they will not come near you.”

10 Wicked people have many ·troubles [pains; torments; woes],
    but the Lord’s ·love [loyalty; covenant love] surrounds those who ·trust [have confidence in] him.
11 ·Good [Righteous] people, rejoice and be happy in the Lord.
    ·Sing [Shout joyfully] all you whose hearts are ·right [upright; virtuous].

Psalm 42-43

Book 2: Psalms 42–72

Wishing to Be Near God

For the director of music. A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of the sons of Korah [C descendants of Kohath, son of Levi, who served as Temple musicians; 1 Chr. 6:22].

42 As a deer ·thirsts [longs; T pants] for streams of water,
    so ·I [T my soul] ·thirst [L longs] for you, God.
·I [T My soul] thirst for the living God.
    When can I go to ·meet with [L see] ·him [L the face of God]?
Day and night, my tears have been my food.
People are always saying,
    “Where is your God?”
When I remember these things,
    I ·speak with a broken heart [L pour out my soul].
I used to walk with the ·crowd [throng]
    and lead them to ·God’s Temple [L the house of God]
with ·songs of praise [L the sound of praise and thanks, a crowd in procession].

Why ·am I so sad [L are you cast down, my soul]?
    Why ·am I so upset [L are you groaning/in an uproar]?

    At night I have a song,
    and I pray to my living God.
I say to God, my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?

A Prayer for Protection

43 God, defend me.
    ·Argue my case [L Vindicate me, O God, and contend for/defend me] against ·those who don’t follow you [L a godless nation].
    ·Save [Rescue; T Deliver] me from ·liars [deceivers] and those who ·do evil [are unjust].
God, you are my ·strength [L refuge].
    Why have you rejected me?
Why am I ·sad [L going around in mourning]
    and ·troubled [oppressed] by my enemies?
Send me your light and ·truth [faithfulness]
    to ·guide [lead] me.
Let them ·lead [bring] me to your holy mountain [C Zion, the location of the Temple],

Job 22:1-4

Eliphaz Answers

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:

“Can anyone ·be of real use to [benefit] God?
    Can even a ·wise [skilled] person ·do him good [benefit him]?
Does it ·help [delight; give pleasure to] ·the Almighty [Shaddai] for you to be ·good [righteous]?
    ·Does he gain anything [What profit is it to him] if you are ·innocent [blameless]?
Does God ·punish [reprimand; reprove] you for ·respecting him [L your fear; C in the sense of piety]?
    Does he ·bring you into court for this [L enter into judgment with you]?

Job 22:21-23:7

21 “·Obey God [L Get along with him] and be at peace with him;
    this is the way to ·happiness [or prosperity; C Eliphaz calls on Job to repent].
22 Accept ·teaching [instruction] from his mouth,
    and ·keep [put] his words in your heart.
23 If you return to ·the Almighty [Shaddai], you will be ·blessed again [L restored].
    So remove ·evil [iniquity] from your ·house [L tent].
24 ·Throw [Put] your gold nuggets into the dust
    and ·your fine gold [L Ophir; C referring to the fine gold of the region of Ophir, perhaps southern Arabia] among the rocks in the ·ravines [wadis].
25 Then ·the Almighty [Shaddai] will be your gold
    and the ·best [choice] silver for you.
26 You will ·find pleasure [delight] in ·the Almighty [Shaddai],
    and you will ·look up [show favor] to him.
27 You will ·pray to [entreat] him, and he will hear you,
    and you will keep your ·promises [vows; C made in anticipation of answered prayer] to him.
28 Anything you decide will be done,
    and light will ·shine on [illuminate] your ways.
29 When people are made humble and you say, ‘·Have courage [or It is pride],’
    then ·the humble [L those with downcast eyes] will be saved.
30 ·Even a guilty person will escape [or He rescues the innocent]
    and ·be saved [or and saves you] because your hands are ·clean [pure].”

Job Answers

23 Then Job answered:

“My ·complaint [or speech] is still ·bitter [or rebellious] today.
    ·I groan because God’s heavy hand is on me [or My hand is heavy with groaning].
I wish I knew where to find God
    so I could go to ·where he lives [L his place].
I would present my case before him
    and fill my mouth with ·arguments [or reprimands; reproofs].
I would learn ·how [L the words by which] he would answer me
    and would think about what he would say.
Would he not ·argue [present his case] ·strongly [L with great power] against me?
    No, he would really listen to me.
·Then [L There] an ·honest [virtuous] person could ·present his case to God [reprimand/reprove him],
    and I would ·be saved [escape] forever ·by [or from] my judge.

Acts 13:26-43

26 “·Brothers, [L Men, brothers] ·sons [or descendants] of the family of Abraham, and others who ·worship [fear; 13:16] God, listen! The ·news [word; message] about this salvation has been sent to us. 27 Those who live in Jerusalem and their leaders ·did not realize that Jesus was the Savior [L were ignorant of this; or did not recognize him]. They did not understand the ·words that the prophets wrote [L voices of the prophets], which are read every Sabbath day. We read about this also in the second psalm:

‘You are my Son.
    Today I have ·become your Father [fathered you; T begotten you; Ps. 2:7].’

34 God raised Jesus from the dead, and he will never go back to ·the grave and become dust [L corruption; decay]. So God said:

‘I will give you the holy and ·sure blessings [L faithful things]
    that I promised to David [Is. 55:3].’

35 But in another place God says:

‘You will not let your Holy One ·experience [L see] ·decay [corruption; Ps. 16:10].’

36 [L For; Now] David ·did God’s will [served God’s purpose] during his ·lifetime [L generation]. Then he ·died [L slept; C a euphemism for death] and was ·buried [L placed] beside his ·ancestors [L fathers], and his body ·experienced [L saw] ·decay [corruption] in the grave. 37 But the One God raised from the dead did not ·experience [L see] ·decay [corruption]. 38 [L Therefore] ·Brothers [L Men, brothers], ·understand what we are telling you [know this]: ·You can have forgiveness of your sins [L Forgiveness of sins is announced to you] through ·Jesus [L this man]. 39 The law of Moses could not ·free you from your sins [justify you; make you righteous]. But through Jesus everyone who believes is ·free from all sins [justified; made/declared righteous]. 40 [L So; Therefore] ·Be careful [Watch out]! Don’t let what the prophets said happen to you:

41 ‘·Listen [L Look; T Behold], you ·people who doubt [scoffers; mockers]!
    ·You can wonder [Be amazed], and then ·die [L perish; vanish].
I ·will do something [L am working a work] in your ·lifetime [L days]
    that you won’t believe even when you are told about it [Hab. 1:5]!’”

42 While ·Paul and Barnabas [L they] were leaving the synagogue, the people ·asked [urged; encouraged] them to tell them more about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the meeting was over, many of the Jews and devout ·converts to Judaism [L proselytes] followed Paul and Barnabas from that place. Paul and Barnabas were persuading them to continue trusting in God’s grace.

John 10:1-18

The Shepherd and His Sheep

10 Jesus said, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], the person who does not enter the ·sheepfold [sheep pen] by the ·door [gate], but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. [C The sheep represent the people of God; the thief/robber stands for those who would lead them astray; Ps. 23; Ezek. 34.] The one who enters by the ·door [gate] is the shepherd of the sheep. The ·one who guards the door [gatekeeper; watchman] opens it for him. And the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out [compare Num. 27:15–17]. When he brings all his sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger. They will run away from him because they don’t know his voice.” Jesus told the people this ·story [figure of speech; illustration; parable], but they did not understand what ·it meant [he was telling them].

Jesus Is the Good Shepherd

So Jesus said again, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], I am the ·door [gate] for the sheep. [C Jesus now refers to himself as the door rather than the shepherd.] All the people who came before me were thieves and robbers [C others who claimed to be the Messiah]. The sheep did not listen to them. I am the ·door [gate], and the person who enters through me will be saved and will be able to come in and go out and find pasture [compare Ps. 118:20]. 10 A thief comes [L only] to steal and kill and destroy, but I came ·to give life [L that they might have life]—life in all its ·fullness [abundance].

11 “I am the good shepherd [contrast Zech. 11:17]. The good shepherd ·gives [lays down] his life for the sheep. 12 The ·worker who is paid to keep the sheep [L hired hand] is different from the shepherd who owns them. When the worker sees a wolf coming, he runs away and leaves the sheep alone. Then the wolf ·attacks [or snatches; seizes] the sheep and scatters them. 13 The man runs away because he is only a ·paid worker [hired hand] and does not really care about the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my ·sheep [L own], and my ·sheep [L own] know me, 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I ·give [lay down] my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not in this ·flock [fold; pen; C a reference to future Gentile followers of Christ], and I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The Father loves me because I ·give [lay down] my life so that I can ·take [receive] it back again. 18 No one takes it away from me; I ·give [lay down] my own life ·freely [voluntarily; of my own free will]. I have the ·right [power; authority] to ·give [lay down] my life, and I have the ·right [power; authority] to ·take [receive] it back. This is what my Father commanded me to do.”
