Psalm 120-127

Psalm 120

A song for going up to worship.

When I was in trouble, I cried out to Yahweh,
    and he answered me.
O Yahweh, rescue me from lying lips
    and from a deceitful tongue.

You deceitful tongue, what can Yahweh give you?
What more can he do for you?
He will give you a warrior’s sharpened arrows and red-hot coals.

How horrible it is to live as a foreigner in Meshech
or to stay in the tents of Kedar.
I have lived too long with those who hate peace.
I am for peace, but when I talk about it,
            they only talk about war.

Psalm 121

A song for going up to worship.

I look up toward the mountains.
    Where can I find help?
My help comes from Yahweh,
the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let you fall.
Your guardian will not fall asleep.
Indeed, the Guardian of Israel never rests or sleeps.
Yahweh is your guardian.
Yahweh is the shade over your right hand.
The sun will not beat down on you during the day,
nor will the moon at night.
Yahweh guards you from every evil.
    He guards your life.
Yahweh guards you as you come and go,
    now and forever.

Psalm 122

A song by David for going up to worship.

I was glad when they said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of Yahweh.”
Our feet are standing inside your gates, Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built to be a city
    where the people are united.[a]
All of Yah’s tribes go to that city
because it is a law in Israel
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.
The court of justice sits there.
It consists of princes who are David’s descendants.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you prosper.
May there be peace inside your walls
    and prosperity in your palaces.”
For the sake of my relatives and friends, let me say,
“May it go well for you!”
For the sake of the house of Yahweh our Elohim,
I will seek what is good for you.

Psalm 123

A song for going up to worship.

I look up to you,
to the one who sits enthroned in heaven.
As servants depend on their masters,
as a maid depends on her mistress,
so we depend on Yahweh our Elohim
until he has pity on us.
Have pity on us, O Yahweh.
    Have pity on us
because we have suffered more than our share of contempt.
We have suffered more than our share of ridicule
    from those who are carefree.
We have suffered more than our share of contempt
    from those who are arrogant.

Psalm 124

A song by David for going up to worship.

“If Yahweh had not been on our side . . .”
    (Israel should repeat this.)
“If Yahweh had not been on our side when people attacked us,
then they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger exploded against us.
Then the floodwaters would have swept us away.
An overflowing stream would have washed us away.
Then raging water would have washed us away.”

Thank Yahweh, who did not let them sink their teeth into us.
We escaped like a bird caught in a hunter’s trap.
The trap was broken, and we escaped.
Our help is in the name of Yahweh, the maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 125

A song for going up to worship.

Those who trust Yahweh are like Mount Zion,
    which can never be shaken.
        It remains firm forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so Yahweh surrounds his people now and forever.

A wicked ruler will not be allowed to govern
the land set aside for righteous people.
That is why righteous people do not use their power to do wrong.

Do good, O Yahweh, to those who are good,
to those whose motives are decent.
But when people become crooked,
Yahweh will lead them away with troublemakers.

Let there be peace in Israel!

Psalm 126

A song for going up to worship.

When Yahweh restored the fortunes of Zion,
it was as if we were dreaming.
Then our mouths were filled with laughter
and our tongues with joyful songs.
    Then the nations said,
Yahweh has done spectacular things for them.”

Yahweh has done spectacular things for us.
    We are overjoyed.
Restore our fortunes, O Yahweh,
as you restore streams to dry riverbeds in the Negev.
Those who cry while they plant
will joyfully sing while they harvest.
The person who goes out weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
will come home singing, carrying his bundles of grain.

Psalm 127

A song by Solomon for going up to worship.

If Yahweh does not build the house,
it is useless for the builders to work on it.
If Yahweh does not protect a city,
it is useless for the guard to stay alert.
It is useless to work hard for the food you eat
by getting up early and going to bed late.
Yahweh gives food to those he loves while they sleep.

Children are an inheritance from Yahweh.
They are a reward from him.
The children born to a man when he is young
are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.
Blessed is the man who has filled his quiver with them.
He will not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the city gate.

Judges 18:1-15

Micah Brings Idolatry to the Tribe of Dan

18 In those days Israel didn’t have a king. And in those days the tribe of Dan was looking for a place to live. Up to that time they had not received land as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel as they should have. So all the families of Dan sent out five qualified men from Zorah and Eshtaol. They were sent to spy throughout the land and explore it. They were told, “Go and explore the land!”

They came to Micah’s house in the mountains of Ephraim. They spent the night there. While they were at Micah’s house, they recognized the young Levite’s voice. So they stopped to ask him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing here? Why are you here?”

The Levite told them what Micah had done for him and added, “Micah hired me, so I became his priest.”

They said to him, “Please find out from Elohim if our journey will be successful.”

The priest told them, “Go in peace. Yahweh approves of your journey.”

The five men left there and came to the city of Laish. They saw that the people there lived without a care. These people were like the people of Sidon. They were peaceful and secure. There was no one around who threatened to take away their property by force. They were far from the people of Sidon and totally independent.

The men went back to their relatives in Zorah and Eshtaol. Their relatives asked them, “What did you find?”

They replied, “Get up, let’s attack Laish. We saw the land. It’s very good!

“Don’t just sit there! Go at once and take the land. 10 When you get there, you will come to a secure people. The land is wide open to you. Elohim will hand it over to you. It’s a place where you will have everything you could want.”

11 So 600 men from the tribe of Dan left Zorah and Eshtaol armed for war. 12 They camped at Kiriath Jearim in Judah. This is why the place just west of Kiriath Jearim is still called Mahaneh Dan [The Camp of Dan] today. 13 From there they marched to the mountains of Ephraim as far as Micah’s house. 14 Then the five men who had gone to spy throughout the land around Laish spoke up. They said to the other men of Dan, “Do you know that there’s an ephod, a carved idol, a metal idol, and household idols in these houses? What do you think we should do?”

15 So they stopped and entered Micah’s house and greeted the young Levite.

Acts 8:1-13

Saul approved of putting Stephen to death.

On that day widespread persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem. Most believers, except the apostles, were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

Devout men buried Stephen as they mourned loudly for him.

Saul tried to destroy the church. He dragged men and women out of one home after another and threw them into prison.

Some Samaritans Become Believers

The believers who were scattered went from place to place, where they spread the word. Philip went to the city of Samaria and told people about the Messiah. The crowds paid close attention to what Philip said. They listened to him and saw the miracles that he performed. Evil spirits screamed as they came out of the many people they had possessed. Many paralyzed and lame people were cured. As a result, that city was extremely happy.

A man named Simon lived in that city. He amazed the people of Samaria with his practice of magic. He claimed that he was great. 10 Everyone from children to adults paid attention to him. They said, “This man is the power of God, and that power is called great.” 11 They paid attention to Simon because he had amazed them for a long time with his practice of magic. 12 However, when Philip spread the Good News about the kingdom of God and the one named Yeshua Christ, men and women believed him and were baptized. 13 Even Simon believed, and after he was baptized, he became devoted to Philip. Simon was amazed to see the miracles and impressive things that were happening.

John 5:30-47

30 I can’t do anything on my own. As I listen to the Father, I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don’t try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants.

31 “If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn’t true. 32 Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. 33 You sent people to John the Baptizer, and he testified to the truth. 34 But I don’t depend on human testimony. I’m telling you this to save you. 35 John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. 36 But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John’s testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. 37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. 38 So you don’t have the Father’s message within you, because you don’t believe in the person he has sent. 39 You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. 40 Yet, you don’t want to come to me to get eternal life.

41 “I don’t accept praise from humans. 42 But I know what kind of people you are. You don’t have any love for God. 43 I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don’t accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe when you accept each other’s praise and don’t look for the praise that comes from the only God?

45 “Don’t think that I will accuse you in the presence of the Father. Moses, the one you trust, is already accusing you. 46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me. Moses wrote about me. 47 If you don’t believe what Moses wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?”
