Psalm 148-150

Psalm 148[a]

Song of the Universe

[b]Alleluia.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    offer praise to him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
    offer praise to him, all his hosts![c]
Praise him, sun and moon;
    offer praise to him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,[d]
    and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name[e] of the Lord,
    for it was at his command that they were created.
He established them in place forever and ever;
    he issued a law that will never pass away.[f]
[g]Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you sea monsters and ocean depths,
fire and hail, snow and clouds,
    storm winds that carry out his word,[h]
all mountains and hills,
    all fruit trees and cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    creeping creatures and flying birds,[i]
11 kings of the earth and all nations,
    princes and all rulers on the earth,
12 young men and women,
    the elderly, as well as children.[j]
13 [k]Let them all praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his majesty is above the earth and the heavens.[l]
14 He has raised high a horn[m] for his people,
    to the glory of all his saints,
    for the people of Israel who are close to him.
Alleluia.

Psalm 149[n]

Glorification of God, Lord and Creator

[o]Alleluia.

Sing to the Lord a new song,[p]
    his praise in the assembly of the saints.
Let Israel rejoice in its Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
Let them praise his name[q] with dancing
    and make music to him with tambourine and lyre.
For the Lord takes delight in his people,
    and he crowns the humble with salvation.[r]
Let the saints exult in their glory
    and sing for joy on their beds.[s]
[t]May the praises of God be on their lips
    and a double-edged sword in their hands[u]
to wreak vengeance[v] on the nations
    and punishment on the peoples,
to shackle their kings with chains
    and their nobles with iron fetters,
to execute the judgments decreed against them:
    such is the glory for all his saints.[w]
Alleluia.

Psalm 150[x]

Harmonious Praise of God

Alleluia.

Praise God in his sanctuary;
    praise him in the firmament of his power.[y]
Praise him for his awesome acts,[z]
    praise him for his immeasurable greatness.
[aa]Praise him with the sound of the trumpet,
    praise him with the harp and lyre.
Praise him with tambourines and dancing,
    praise him with strings and flutes.
Praise him with clanging cymbals,
    praise him with crashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes
    offer praise to the Lord.
Alleluia.[ab]

Psalm 114-115

Psalm 114[a]

The Lord’s Wonders at the Exodus

[b]When Israel came out of Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from a people of alien tongue,
Judah became God’s sanctuary
    and Israel his domain.
[c]The sea fled at the sight;
    the Jordan turned back.
The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs of the flock.
[d]What causes you to flee, O sea?
    Why, O Jordan, do you turn back?
Why do you skip like rams, O mountains,
    and like lambs of the flock, O hills?
[e]Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool of water,
    and flint into a flowing spring.

Psalm 115[f]

Hymn to the Lord, the One God

[g]Not to us,[h]Lord, not to us,
    but to your name give glory
    because of your kindness and faithfulness.
Why should the nations ask,
    “Where is their God?”[i]
Our God is in heaven;
    he does whatever he pleases.[j]
Their idols are merely silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.[k]
They have mouths but they cannot speak;
    they have eyes but they cannot see.
They have ears but they cannot hear;
    they have noses but they cannot smell.
They have hands but they cannot feel;
    they have feet but they cannot walk;
    their throats can emit no sound.
Those who make them end up like them,
    as do all who place their trust in them.
[l]The house of Israel trusts in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
10 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
11 Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord;
    he is their help and their shield.
12 [m]The Lord will be mindful of us and bless us;
    he will bless the house of Israel;
    he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord,
    the small no less than the great.[n]
14 [o]May the Lord cause you to increase,
    both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.
16 [p]The heavens belong to the Lord,
    but he has given the earth to humanity.
17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
    those who sink into silence.[q]
18 It is we who bless the Lord
    from this time forward and forevermore.[r]
Alleluia.

Amos 6

Chapter 6

Bloody Description of the Orgy of the Head of Israel

Alas for those who are at ease in Zion,
    and for those who feel secure on the mount of Samaria,
the leaders of the most important of the nations
    to whom the people of Israel have recourse.
Cross over to Calneh[a] and see;
    travel on from there to Hamath the great,
    and then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
Are you better than these kingdoms?
    Is your territory greater than theirs?
You put aside all thoughts of the evil day
    and thereby hasten the reign of violence.
Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory
    and lounge on their couches.
They feast on lambs from the flock
    and stall-fattened calves.
They improvise on the music of the harp,
    and, like David, they invent musical instruments.
They drink wine by the bowlful
    and anoint themselves with the finest oils,
    but they feel no grief over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore, they will now be the first to go into exile,
    and their wanton revelry will come to an end.

There Will Be Nothing Left of Israel

The Lord God has sworn by himself.
    Thus say I, the Lord, the God of hosts:
I abhor the pride of Jacob
    and hate his palaces,
I shall deliver up the city
    and all that is in it.
If ten men are left in a single house,
    they will die.
10 Only a few will be left
    to carry out the dead from the house.
If someone calls to a man inside the house,
    “Are there any more there?”
    and he answers, “No,”
then he will say, “Hush,”
    for the name of the Lord must not be mentioned.
11 At the Lord’s command,
    the great house will be shattered to bits,
    and the small houses will be reduced to rubble.
12 Can horses gallop over rocks?
    Can one plow the sea with oxen?
Yet you have turned justice into poison
    and the fruit of justice into venom—
13 you who rejoice in Lodebar,[b]
    who say, “Have we not, by our own strength,
    seized Karnaim for ourselves?”
14 Beware, O house of Israel,
    for I am raising up against you a nation,
    says the Lord, the God of hosts,
and that nation shall oppress you
    from Lebo of Hamath even to the Wadi Arabah.

2 Thessalonians 1:5-12

Judgment and the Coming of the Lord. All this is proof of God’s just judgment, and it shows that you are worthy of the kingdom of God, for the sake of which you are suffering. It is only just that God will repay with suffering those who make you suffer and grant relief to you who are suffering, and to us as well. This will take place when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.

He will come in blazing fire to inflict punishment on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 10 on that Day when he comes to be glorified by his holy ones and to be adored by all believers, among whom you will be present since you believed the testimony we offered to you.

11 Prayer for the Community. Therefore, we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and by his power bring to fulfillment every good resolve and every work of faith. 12 In this way, the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.[a]

Luke 1:57-68

57 The Birth of John. When the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, she bore a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they shared in her rejoicing.

59 On the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. 60 However, his mother objected. “No,” she said. “He is to be called John.” 61 They said to her, “There is no one in your family who has this name.” 62 They then made signs to his father to ask what name he wanted to be given to the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and he wrote: “His name is John.” They were all filled with wonder.

64 Immediately, his mouth was opened and his tongue was freed, and he began to speak, giving praise to God. 65 All their neighbors were overcome with awe, and all these things were related throughout the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them were deeply impressed, and they wondered, “What then is this child going to be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 The Canticle of Zechariah.[a] Then the child’s father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

68 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    for he has visited his people and redeemed them.
