Psalm 136

God’s Love Continues Forever

136 Give thanks to the Lord because he is good.
    His love continues forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
    His love continues forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords.
    His love continues forever.

Only he can do great miracles.
    His love continues forever.
With his wisdom he made the skies.
    His love continues forever.
He spread out the earth on the seas.
    His love continues forever.
He made the sun and the moon.
    His love continues forever.
He made the sun to rule the day.
    His love continues forever.
He made the moon and stars to rule the night.
    His love continues forever.

10 He killed the firstborn sons of the Egyptians.
    His love continues forever.
11 He brought the people of Israel out of Egypt.
    His love continues forever.
12 He did it with his great power and strength.
    His love continues forever.
13 He parted the water of the Red Sea.
    His love continues forever.
14 He brought the Israelites through the middle of it.
    His love continues forever.
15 But the king of Egypt and his army drowned in the Red Sea.
    His love continues forever.

16 He led his people through the desert.
    His love continues forever.
17 He defeated great kings.
    His love continues forever.
18 He killed powerful kings.
    His love continues forever.
19 He defeated Sihon king of the Amorites.
    His love continues forever.
20 He defeated Og king of Bashan.
    His love continues forever.
21 He gave their land as a gift.
    His love continues forever.
22 It was a gift to his servants, the Israelites.
    His love continues forever.

23 He remembered us when we were in trouble.
    His love continues forever.
24 He freed us from our enemies.
    His love continues forever.
25 He gives food to every living creature.
    His love continues forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
    His love continues forever.

Psalm 118

Thanksgiving for Victory

118 Thank the Lord because he is good.
    His love continues forever.
Let the people of Israel say,
    “His love continues forever.”
Let the family of Aaron say,
    “His love continues forever.”
Let those who respect the Lord say,
    “His love continues forever.”

I was in trouble, so I called to the Lord.
The Lord answered me and set me free.
I will not be afraid, because the Lord is with me.
People can’t do anything to me.
The Lord is with me to help me,
so I will see my enemies defeated.
It is better to trust the Lord
    than to trust people.
It is better to trust the Lord
    than to trust princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me,
but I defeated them in the name of the Lord.
11 They surrounded me on every side,
but with the Lord’s power I defeated them.
12 They surrounded me like a swarm of bees,
but they died as quickly as thorns burn.
By the Lord’s power, I defeated them.
13 They chased me until I was almost defeated,
    but the Lord helped me.
14 The Lord gives me strength and a song.
    He has saved me.

15 Shouts of joy and victory
come from the tents of those who do right:
“The Lord has done powerful things.”
16 The power of the Lord has won the victory;
with his power the Lord has done mighty things.

17 I will not die, but live,
and I will tell what the Lord has done.
18 The Lord has taught me a hard lesson,
but he did not let me die.

19 Open for me the Temple gates.
Then I will come in and thank the Lord.
20 This is the Lord’s gate;
only those who are good may enter through it.
21 Lord, I thank you for answering me.
    You have saved me.

22 The stone that the builders rejected
    became the cornerstone.
23 The Lord did this,
and it is wonderful to us.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad today!

25 Please, Lord, save us;
    please, Lord, give us success.
26 God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless all of you from the Temple of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has shown kindness to us.
With branches in your hands, join the feast.
Come to the corners of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will thank you;
you are my God, and I will praise your greatness.

29 Thank the Lord because he is good.
    His love continues forever.

Daniel 12:1-4

The Time of the End

12 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will stand up. There will be a time of much trouble, the worst time since nations have been on earth, but your people will be saved. Everyone whose name is written in God’s book will be saved. Many people who have already died will live again. Some of them will wake up to have life forever, but some will wake up to find shame and disgrace forever. The wise people will shine like the brightness of the sky. Those who teach others to live right will shine like stars forever and ever.

“But you, Daniel, close up the book and seal it. These things will happen at the time of the end. Many people will go here and there to find true knowledge.”

Daniel 12:13

13 “As for you, Daniel, go your way until the end. You will get your rest, and at the end you will rise to receive your reward.”

Acts 4:1-12

Peter and John at the Council

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, priests, the captain of the soldiers that guarded the Temple, and Sadducees came up to them. They were upset because the two apostles were teaching the people and were preaching that people will rise from the dead through the power of Jesus. The older leaders grabbed Peter and John and put them in jail. Since it was already night, they kept them in jail until the next day. But many of those who had heard Peter and John preach believed the things they said. There were now about five thousand in the group of believers.

The next day the rulers, the elders, and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander were there, as well as everyone from the high priest’s family. They made Peter and John stand before them and then asked them, “By what power or authority did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and you elders, are you questioning us about a good thing that was done to a crippled man? Are you asking us who made him well? 10 We want all of you and all the people to know that this man was made well by the power of Jesus Christ from Nazareth. You crucified him, but God raised him from the dead. This man was crippled, but he is now well and able to stand here before you because of the power of Jesus. 11 Jesus is

‘the stone[a] that you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’ Psalm 118:22

12 Jesus is the only One who can save people. No one else in the world is able to save us.”

John 16:1-15

16 “I have told you these things to keep you from giving up. People will put you out of their synagogues. Yes, the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are offering service to God. They will do this because they have not known the Father and they have not known me. I have told you these things now so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you then. Now I am going back to the One who sent me. But none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Your hearts are filled with sadness because I have told you these things. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. When I go away, I will send the Helper[a] to you. If I do not go away, the Helper will not come. When the Helper comes, he will prove to the people of the world the truth about sin, about being right with God, and about judgment. He will prove to them that sin is not believing in me. 10 He will prove to them that being right with God comes from my going to the Father and not being seen anymore. 11 And the Helper will prove to them that judgment happened when the ruler of this world was judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but they are too much for you now. 13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words, but he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is to come. 14 The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me, because he will take what I have to say and tell it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take what I have to say and tell it to you.
