Psalm 16-17

A Prayer of Confidence[a]

16 Protect me, O God; I trust in you for safety.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    all the good things I have come from you.”

How excellent are the Lord's faithful people!
    My greatest pleasure is to be with them.

Those who rush to other gods
    bring many troubles on themselves.[b]
I will not take part in their sacrifices;
    I will not worship their gods.

You, Lord, are all I have,
    and you give me all I need;
    my future is in your hands.
How wonderful are your gifts to me;
    how good they are!

I praise the Lord, because he guides me,
    and in the night my conscience warns me.
I am always aware of the Lord's presence;
    he is near, and nothing can shake me.

And so I am thankful and glad,
    and I feel completely secure,
10 (A)because you protect me from the power of death.
I have served you faithfully,
    and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead.

11 (B)You will show me the path that leads to life;
    your presence fills me with joy
    and brings me pleasure forever.

The Prayer of an Innocent Person[c]

17 Listen, O Lord, to my plea for justice;
    pay attention to my cry for help!
    Listen to my honest prayer.
You will judge in my favor,
    because you know what is right.

You know my heart.
    You have come to me at night;
    you have examined me completely
    and found no evil desire in me.
I speak no evil,
as others do;
    I have obeyed your command
    and have not followed paths of violence.
I have always walked in your way
    and have never strayed from it.

I pray to you, O God, because you answer me;
    so turn to me and listen to my words.
Reveal your wonderful love and save me;
    at your side I am safe from my enemies.

Protect me as you would your very eyes;
    hide me in the shadow of your wings
    from the attacks of the wicked.

Deadly enemies surround me;
10     they have no pity and speak proudly.
11 They are around me now, wherever I turn,
    watching for a chance to pull me down.
12 They are like lions, waiting for me,
    wanting to tear me to pieces.

13 Come, Lord! Oppose my enemies and defeat them!
Save me from the wicked by your sword;
14     save me from those who in this life have all they want.
Punish them with the sufferings you have stored up for them;
    may there be enough for their children
    and some left over for their children's children!

15 But I will see you, because I have done no wrong;
    and when I awake, your presence will fill me with joy.

Psalm 134-135

A Call to Praise God

134 Come, praise the Lord,
    all his servants,
    all who serve in his Temple at night.
Raise your hands in prayer in the Temple,
    and praise the Lord!

May the Lord, who made heaven and earth,
    bless you from Zion!

A Hymn of Praise

135 Praise the Lord!

Praise his name, you servants of the Lord,
    who stand in the Lord's house,
    in the Temple of our God.
Praise the Lord, because he is good;
    sing praises to his name, because he is kind.[a]
He chose Jacob for himself,
    the people of Israel for his own.

I know that our Lord is great,
    greater than all the gods.
He does whatever he wishes
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and in the depths below.
He brings storm clouds from the ends of the earth;
    he makes lightning for the storms,
    and he brings out the wind from his storeroom.

In Egypt he killed all the first-born
    of people and animals alike.
There he performed miracles and wonders
    to punish the king and all his officials.
10 He destroyed many nations
    and killed powerful kings:
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    Og, king of Bashan,
    and all the kings in Canaan.
12 He gave their lands to his people;
    he gave them to Israel.

13 Lord, you will always be proclaimed as God;
    all generations will remember you.
14 The Lord will defend his people;
    he will take pity on his servants.

15 (A)The gods of the nations are made of silver and gold;
    they are formed by human hands.
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
    and eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears, but cannot hear;
    they are not even able to breathe.
18 May all who made them and who trust in them
    become[b] like the idols they have made!

19 Praise the Lord, people of Israel;
    praise him, you priests of God!
20 Praise the Lord, you Levites;
    praise him, all you that worship him!
21 Praise the Lord in Zion,
    in Jerusalem, his home.

Praise the Lord!

Exodus 16:23-36

23 (A)and he said to them, “The Lord has commanded that tomorrow is a holy day of rest, dedicated to him. Bake today what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Whatever is left should be put aside and kept for tomorrow.” 24 As Moses had commanded, they kept what was left until the next day; it did not spoil or get worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat this today, because today is the Sabbath, a day of rest dedicated to the Lord, and you will not find any food outside the camp. 26 You must gather food for six days, but on the seventh day, the day of rest, there will be none.”

27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather food, but they did not find any. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How much longer will you people refuse to obey my commands? 29 Remember that I, the Lord, have given you a day of rest, and that is why on the sixth day I will always give you enough food for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day and not leave his home.” 30 So the people did no work on the seventh day.

31 (B)The people of Israel called the food manna.[a] It was like a small white seed, and tasted like thin cakes made with honey. 32 Moses said, “The Lord has commanded us to save some manna, to be kept for our descendants, so that they can see the food which he gave us to eat in the desert when he brought us out of Egypt.” 33 (C)Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, put two quarts of manna in it, and place it in the Lord's presence to be kept for our descendants.” 34 As the Lord had commanded Moses, Aaron put it in front of the Covenant Box, so that it could be kept. 35 (D)The Israelites ate manna for the next forty years, until they reached the land of Canaan, where they settled. (36 The standard dry measure then in use equaled twenty quarts.)

1 Peter 3:13-4:6

13 Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? 14 (A)But even if you should suffer for doing what is right, how happy you are! Do not be afraid of anyone, and do not worry. 15 But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, 16 but do it with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are insulted, those who speak evil of your good conduct as followers of Christ will become ashamed of what they say. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if this should be God's will, than for doing evil. 18 For Christ died[a] for sins once and for all, a good man on behalf of sinners, in order to lead you to God. He was put to death physically, but made alive spiritually, 19 and in his spiritual existence he went and preached to the imprisoned spirits. 20 (B)These were the spirits of those who had not obeyed God when he waited patiently during the days that Noah was building his boat. The few people in the boat—eight in all—were saved by the water, 21 which was a symbol pointing to baptism, which now saves you. It is not the washing off of bodily dirt, but the promise made to God from a good conscience. It saves you through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone to heaven and is at the right side of God, ruling over all angels and heavenly authorities and powers.

Changed Lives

Since Christ suffered physically, you too must strengthen yourselves with the same way of thinking that he had; because whoever suffers physically is no longer involved with sin. From now on, then, you must live the rest of your earthly lives controlled by God's will and not by human desires. You have spent enough time in the past doing what the heathen like to do. Your lives were spent in indecency, lust, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and the disgusting worship of idols. And now the heathen are surprised when you do not join them in the same wild and reckless living, and so they insult you. But they will have to give an account of themselves to God, who is ready to judge the living and the dead. That is why the Good News was preached also to the dead, to those who had been judged in their physical existence as everyone is judged; it was preached to them so that in their spiritual existence they may live as God lives.

John 16:1-15

16 “I have told you this, so that you will not give up your faith. You will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time will come when those who kill you will think that by doing this they are serving God. People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me. But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not tell you these things at the beginning, for I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going. And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness. But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God's judgment. They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; 11 and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. 13 (A)When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. 14 He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you. 15 All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you.
