Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 87[a]
Written by the Korahites; a psalm, a song.
87 The Lord’s city is in the holy hills.[b]
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 People say wonderful things about you,[c]
O city of God. (Selah)
4 I mention Rahab[d] and Babylon to my followers.[e]
Here are[f] Philistia and Tyre, along with Ethiopia.[g]
It is said of them, “This one was born there.”[h]
5 But it is said of Zion’s residents,[i]
“Each one of these[j] was born in her,
and the Most High[k] makes her secure.”
6 The Lord writes in the census book of the nations,[l]
“This one was born there.”[m] (Selah)
7 As for the singers, as well as the pipers—
all of them sing within your walls.[n]
Book 4 (Psalms 90-106)
Psalm 90[a]
A prayer of Moses, the man of God.
90 O Lord, you have been our protector[b] through all generations.
2 Even before the mountains came into existence,[c]
or you brought the world into being,[d]
you were the eternal God.[e]
3 You make mankind return[f] to the dust,[g]
and say, “Return, O people.”
4 Yes,[h] in your eyes a thousand years
are like yesterday that quickly passes,
or like one of the divisions of the nighttime.[i]
5 You bring their lives to an end and they “fall asleep.”[j]
In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up:
6 In the morning it glistens[k] and sprouts up;
at evening time it withers[l] and dries up.
7 Yes,[m] we are consumed by your anger;
we are terrified by your wrath.
8 You are aware of our sins;[n]
you even know about our hidden sins.[o]
9 Yes,[p] throughout all our days we experience your raging fury;[q]
the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh.[r]
10 The days of our lives add up to seventy years,[s]
or eighty, if one is especially strong.[t]
But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression.[u]
Yes,[v] they pass quickly[w] and we fly away.[x]
11 Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger?[y]
Your raging fury causes people to fear you.[z]
12 So teach us to consider our mortality,[aa]
so that we might live wisely.[ab]
13 Turn back toward us, O Lord.
How long must this suffering last?[ac]
Have pity on your servants.[ad]
14 Satisfy us in the morning[ae] with your loyal love.
Then we will shout for joy and be happy[af] all our days.
15 Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us,
in proportion to the years we have experienced[ag] trouble.
16 May your servants see your work.[ah]
May their sons see your majesty.[ai]
17 May our Sovereign God extend his favor to us.[aj]
Make our endeavors successful.
Yes, make them successful.[ak]
Psalm 136[a]
136 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his loyal love endures.[b]
2 Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his loyal love endures.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his loyal love endures,
4 to the one who performs magnificent, amazing deeds all by himself,
for his loyal love endures,
5 to the one who used wisdom to make the heavens,
for his loyal love endures,
6 to the one who spread out the earth over the water,
for his loyal love endures,
7 to the one who made the great lights,
for his loyal love endures,
8 the sun to rule by day,
for his loyal love endures,
9 the moon and stars to rule by night,
for his loyal love endures,
10 to the one who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
for his loyal love endures,
11 and led Israel out from their midst,
for his loyal love endures,
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his loyal love endures,
13 to the one who divided[c] the Red Sea[d] in two,[e]
for his loyal love endures,
14 and led Israel through its midst,
for his loyal love endures,
15 and tossed[f] Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea,
for his loyal love endures,
16 to the one who led his people through the wilderness,
for his loyal love endures,
17 to the one who struck down great kings,
for his loyal love endures,
18 and killed powerful kings,
for his loyal love endures,
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his loyal love endures,
20 Og, king of Bashan,
for his loyal love endures,
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
for his loyal love endures,
22 as an inheritance to Israel his servant,
for his loyal love endures,
23 to the one who remembered us when we were down,[g]
for his loyal love endures,
24 and snatched us away from our enemies,
for his loyal love endures,
25 to the one who gives food to all living things,[h]
for his loyal love endures.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his loyal love endures!
An Object Lesson from Ruined Linen Shorts
13 The Lord said to me, “Go and buy some linen shorts[a] and put them on.[b] Do not put them in water.”[c] 2 So I bought the shorts in keeping with the Lord’s instructions[d] and put them on.[e] 3 Then the Lord’s message came to me again, 4 “Take the shorts that you bought and are wearing[f] and go at once[g] to Perath.[h] Bury the shorts there[i] in a crack in the rocks.” 5 So I went and buried them at Perath[j] as the Lord had ordered me to do. 6 Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go at once to Perath and get[k] the shorts I ordered you to bury there.” 7 So I went to Perath and dug up[l] the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I found[m] that they were ruined; they were good for nothing.
8 Then the Lord’s message came to me, 9 “I, the Lord, say:[n] ‘This shows how[o] I will ruin the highly exalted position[p] in which Judah and Jerusalem take pride. 10 These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said.[q] They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance[r] to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So[s] they will become just like these linen shorts that are good for nothing. 11 For,’ I say,[t] ‘just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of Judah[u] tightly[v] to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise.[w] But they would not obey me.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires, 13 and do not present your members to sin as instruments[a] to be used for unrighteousness,[b] but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments[c] to be used for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace.
The Believer’s Enslavement to God’s Righteousness
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves[d] as obedient slaves,[e] you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness?[f] 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed[g] from the heart that pattern[h] of teaching you were entrusted to, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. 19 (I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.)[i] For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.
21 So what benefit[j] did you then reap[k] from those things that you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now, freed[l] from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit[m] leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. 23 For the payoff[n] of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
47 The one who belongs to[a] God listens and responds[b] to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond,[c] because you don’t belong to God.”[d]
48 The Judeans[e] replied,[f] “Aren’t we correct in saying[g] that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?”[h] 49 Jesus answered, “I am not possessed by a demon,[i] but I honor my Father—and yet[j] you dishonor me. 50 I am not trying to get[k] praise for myself.[l] There is one who demands[m] it, and he also judges.[n] 51 I tell you the solemn truth,[o] if anyone obeys[p] my teaching,[q] he will never see death.”[r]
52 Then[s] the Judeans[t] responded,[u] “Now we know you’re possessed by a demon![v] Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yet[w] you say, ‘If anyone obeys[x] my teaching,[y] he will never experience[z] death.’[aa] 53 You aren’t greater than our father Abraham who died, are you?[ab] And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?” 54 Jesus replied,[ac] “If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless.[ad] The one who glorifies me is my Father, about whom you people[ae] say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 Yet[af] you do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him,[ag] I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey[ah] his teaching.[ai] 56 Your father Abraham was overjoyed[aj] to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.”[ak]
57 Then the Judeans[al] replied,[am] “You are not yet fifty years old![an] Have[ao] you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth,[ap] before Abraham came into existence,[aq] I am!”[ar] 59 Then they picked up[as] stones to throw at him,[at] but Jesus was hidden from them[au] and went out from the temple area.[av]
