Psalm 87

Psalm 87[a]

Written by the Korahites; a psalm, a song.

87 The Lord’s city is in the holy hills.[b]
The Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
People say wonderful things about you,[c]
O city of God. (Selah)
I mention Rahab[d] and Babylon to my followers.[e]
Here are[f] Philistia and Tyre, along with Ethiopia.[g]
It is said of them, “This one was born there.”[h]
But it is said of Zion’s residents,[i]
“Each one of these[j] was born in her,
and the Most High[k] makes her secure.”
The Lord writes in the census book of the nations,[l]
“This one was born there.”[m] (Selah)
As for the singers, as well as the pipers—
all of them sing within your walls.[n]

Psalm 90

Book 4 (Psalms 90-106)

Psalm 90[a]

A prayer of Moses, the man of God.

90 O Lord, you have been our protector[b] through all generations.
Even before the mountains came into existence,[c]
or you brought the world into being,[d]
you were the eternal God.[e]
You make mankind return[f] to the dust,[g]
and say, “Return, O people.”
Yes,[h] in your eyes a thousand years
are like yesterday that quickly passes,
or like one of the divisions of the nighttime.[i]
You bring their lives to an end and they “fall asleep.”[j]
In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up:
In the morning it glistens[k] and sprouts up;
at evening time it withers[l] and dries up.
Yes,[m] we are consumed by your anger;
we are terrified by your wrath.
You are aware of our sins;[n]
you even know about our hidden sins.[o]
Yes,[p] throughout all our days we experience your raging fury;[q]
the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh.[r]
10 The days of our lives add up to seventy years,[s]
or eighty, if one is especially strong.[t]
But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression.[u]
Yes,[v] they pass quickly[w] and we fly away.[x]
11 Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger?[y]
Your raging fury causes people to fear you.[z]
12 So teach us to consider our mortality,[aa]
so that we might live wisely.[ab]
13 Turn back toward us, O Lord.
How long must this suffering last?[ac]
Have pity on your servants.[ad]
14 Satisfy us in the morning[ae] with your loyal love.
Then we will shout for joy and be happy[af] all our days.
15 Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us,
in proportion to the years we have experienced[ag] trouble.
16 May your servants see your work.[ah]
May their sons see your majesty.[ai]
17 May our Sovereign God extend his favor to us.[aj]
Make our endeavors successful.
Yes, make them successful.[ak]

Psalm 136

Psalm 136[a]

136 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his loyal love endures.[b]
Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his loyal love endures.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his loyal love endures,
to the one who performs magnificent, amazing deeds all by himself,
for his loyal love endures,
to the one who used wisdom to make the heavens,
for his loyal love endures,
to the one who spread out the earth over the water,
for his loyal love endures,
to the one who made the great lights,
for his loyal love endures,
the sun to rule by day,
for his loyal love endures,
the moon and stars to rule by night,
for his loyal love endures,
10 to the one who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
for his loyal love endures,
11 and led Israel out from their midst,
for his loyal love endures,
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his loyal love endures,
13 to the one who divided[c] the Red Sea[d] in two,[e]
for his loyal love endures,
14 and led Israel through its midst,
for his loyal love endures,
15 and tossed[f] Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea,
for his loyal love endures,
16 to the one who led his people through the wilderness,
for his loyal love endures,
17 to the one who struck down great kings,
for his loyal love endures,
18 and killed powerful kings,
for his loyal love endures,
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his loyal love endures,
20 Og, king of Bashan,
for his loyal love endures,
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
for his loyal love endures,
22 as an inheritance to Israel his servant,
for his loyal love endures,
23 to the one who remembered us when we were down,[g]
for his loyal love endures,
24 and snatched us away from our enemies,
for his loyal love endures,
25 to the one who gives food to all living things,[h]
for his loyal love endures.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his loyal love endures!

Numbers 13:31-14:25

31 But the men[a] who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against these people, because they are stronger than we are!” 32 Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging report[b] of the land they had investigated, saying, “The land that we passed through[c] to investigate is a land that devours[d] its inhabitants.[e] All the people we saw there[f] are of great stature. 33 We even saw the Nephilim[g] there (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed like grasshoppers both to ourselves[h] and to them.”[i]

The Israelites Respond in Unbelief

14 [j] Then all the community raised a loud cry,[k] and the people wept[l] that night. And all the Israelites murmured[m] against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died[n] in the land of Egypt, or if only we had perished[o] in this wilderness! Why has the Lord brought us into this land only to be killed by the sword, that our wives and our children should become plunder? Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?” So they said to one another,[p] “Let’s appoint[q] a leader[r] and return[s] to Egypt.”

Then Moses and Aaron fell down with their faces to the ground[t] before the whole assembled community[u] of the Israelites. And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of those who had investigated the land, tore their garments. They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly[v] good land. If the Lord delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land that is flowing with milk and honey.[w] Only do not rebel against the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us.[x] Their protection[y] has turned aside from them, but the Lord is with us. Do not fear them!”

10 However, the whole community threatened to stone them.[z] But[aa] the glory[ab] of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites at the tent[ac] of meeting.

The Punishment from God

11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise[ad] me, and how long will they not believe[ae] in me, in spite of the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence,[af] and I will disinherit them—I will make you into a nation that is greater and mightier than they!”

13 Moses said to the Lord, “When the Egyptians hear[ag] it—for you brought up this people by your power from among them— 14 then they will tell it to the inhabitants[ah] of this land. They have heard that you, Lord, are among this people, that you, Lord, are seen face to face,[ai] that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them by day in a pillar of cloud and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you kill[aj] this entire people at once,[ak] then the nations that have heard of your fame will say, 16 ‘Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 So now, let the power of my Lord[al] be great, just as you have said, 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in loyal love,[am] forgiving iniquity and transgression,[an] but by no means clearing the guilty,[ao] visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children until the third and fourth generations.’[ap] 19 Please forgive[aq] the iniquity of this people according to your great loyal love,[ar] just as you have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.”

20 Then the Lord said, “I have forgiven them as you asked.[as] 21 But truly, as I live,[at] all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord. 22 For all the people have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted[au] me now these ten times,[av] and have not obeyed me[aw] 23 they will by no means[ax] see the land that I promised on oath to their fathers, nor will any of them who despised me see it— 24 Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully—I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants[ay] will possess it. 25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites were living in the valleys.)[az] Tomorrow, turn and journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”

Romans 3:9-20

The Condemnation of the World

What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin, 10 just as it is written:

There is no one righteous, not even one,
11 there is no one who understands,
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.[a]
13 Their throats are open graves,[b]
they deceive with their tongues,
the poison of asps is under their lips.”[c]
14 Their mouths are[d] full of cursing and bitterness.”[e]
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.”[f]
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[g]

19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under[h] the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no one is declared righteous before him[i] by the works of the law,[j] for through the law comes[k] the knowledge of sin.

Matthew 19:1-12

Questions About Divorce

19 Now when[a] Jesus finished these sayings, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan River.[b] Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

Then some Pharisees[c] came to him in order to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful[d] to divorce a wife for any cause?”[e] He answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female,[f] and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?[g] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?”[h] Jesus[i] said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts,[j] but from the beginning it was not this way. Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery.” 10 The[k] disciples said to him, “If this is the case of a husband with a wife, it is better not to marry!” 11 He[l] said to them, “Not everyone can accept this statement, except those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are some eunuchs who were that way from birth,[m] and some who were made eunuchs[n] by others,[o] and some who became eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept this should accept it.”
