Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 138[a]
By David.
138 I will give you thanks with all my heart;
before the heavenly assembly[b] I will sing praises to you.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.[c]
3 When[d] I cried out for help, you answered me.
You made me bold and energized me.[e]
4 Let all the kings of the earth give thanks[f] to you, O Lord,
when they hear the words you speak.[g]
5 Let them sing about the Lord’s deeds,[h]
for the Lord’s splendor is magnificent.[i]
6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks after the lowly,
and from far away humbles[j] the proud.
7 Even when I must walk in the midst of danger,[k] you revive me.
You oppose my angry enemies,[l]
and your right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord avenges me.[m]
O Lord, your loyal love endures.
Do not abandon those whom you have made.[n]
Psalm 139[o]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
139 O Lord, you examine me[p] and know me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I get up;
even from far away you understand my motives.
3 You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest;[q]
you are aware of everything I do.[r]
4 Certainly[s] my tongue does not frame a word
without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.[t]
5 You squeeze me in from behind and in front;
you place your hand on me.
6 Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension;
it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.[u]
7 Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
Where can I flee to escape your presence?[v]
8 If I were to ascend[w] to heaven, you would be there.
If I were to sprawl out[x] in Sheol, there you would be.[y]
9 If I were to fly away[z] on the wings of the dawn,[aa]
and settle down on the other side[ab] of the sea,
10 even there your hand would guide me,
your right hand would grab hold of me.
11 If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me,[ac]
and the light will turn to night all around me,”[ad]
12 even the darkness is not too dark for you to see,[ae]
and the night is as bright as[af] day;
darkness and light are the same to you.[ag]
13 Certainly[ah] you made my mind and heart;[ai]
you wove me together[aj] in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.[ak]
You knew me thoroughly;[al]
15 my bones were not hidden from you,
when[am] I was made in secret
and sewed together in the depths of the earth.[an]
16 Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb.[ao]
All the days ordained for me
were recorded in your scroll
before one of them came into existence.[ap]
17 How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God![aq]
How vast is their sum total.[ar]
18 If I tried to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
Even if I finished counting them,
I would still have to contend with you.[as]
19 If only[at] you would kill the wicked, O God!
Get away from me, you violent men![au]
20 They[av] rebel against you[aw] and act deceitfully;[ax]
your enemies lie.[ay]
21 O Lord, do I not hate those who hate you,
and despise those who oppose you?[az]
22 I absolutely hate them;[ba]
they have become my enemies.
23 Examine me, O God, and probe my thoughts.[bb]
Test me, and know my concerns.[bc]
Psalm 147[a]
147 Praise the Lord,
for it is good to sing praises to our God.
Yes,[b] praise is pleasant and appropriate.
2 The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem,
and gathers the exiles of Israel.
3 He heals[c] the brokenhearted,
and bandages their wounds.
4 He counts the number of the stars;
he names all of them.
5 Our Lord is great and has awesome power;[d]
there is no limit to his wisdom.[e]
6 The Lord lifts up the oppressed,
but knocks[f] the wicked to the ground.
7 Offer to the Lord a song of thanks.[g]
Sing praises to our God to the accompaniment of a harp.
8 He covers[h] the sky with clouds,
provides the earth with rain,
and causes grass to grow on the hillsides.[i]
9 He gives food to the animals,
and to the young ravens when they chirp.[j]
10 He is not enamored with the strength of a horse,
nor is he impressed by the warrior’s strong legs.[k]
11 The Lord takes delight in his faithful followers,[l]
and in those who wait for his loyal love.
12 Extol the Lord, O Jerusalem.
Praise your God, O Zion.
13 For he makes the bars of your gates strong.
He blesses your children[m] within you.
14 He[n] brings peace to your territory.[o]
He abundantly provides for you[p] the best grain.
15 He[q] sends his command through the earth;[r]
swiftly his order reaches its destination.[s]
16 He sends the snow that is white like wool;
he spreads the frost that is white like ashes.[t]
17 He throws his hailstones[u] like crumbs.
Who can withstand the cold wind he sends?[v]
18 He then orders it all to melt;[w]
he breathes on it,[x] and the water flows.
19 He proclaims his word to Jacob,
his statutes and regulations to Israel.
20 He has not done so with any other nation;
they are not aware of his regulations.
Praise the Lord!
New Leaders over a Regathered Remnant
23 The Lord says,[a] “The leaders of my people are sure to be judged.[b] They were supposed to watch over my people like shepherds watch over their sheep. But they are causing my people to be destroyed and scattered.”[c] 2 So the Lord God of Israel has this to say about the leaders who are ruling over his people: “You have caused my people[d] to be dispersed and driven into exile. You have not taken care of them. So I will punish you for the evil that you have done.[e] I, the Lord, affirm it![f] 3 Then I myself will regather those of my people[g] who are still alive from all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their homeland.[h] They will greatly increase in number. 4 I will install rulers[i] over them who will care for them. Then they will no longer need to fear or be terrified. None of them will turn up missing.[j] I, the Lord, promise it![k]
5 “I, the Lord, promise[l] that a new time will certainly come[m]
when I will raise up for them a righteous branch,[n] a descendant of David.
He will rule over them with wisdom and understanding[o]
and will do what is just and right in the land.[p]
6 Under his rule[q] Judah will enjoy safety[r]
and Israel will live in security.[s]
This is the name he will go by:
‘The Lord has provided us with justice.’[t]
7 “So I, the Lord, say:[u] ‘A new time will certainly come.[v] People now affirm their oaths with, “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the people of Israel out of Egypt.” 8 But at that time they will affirm them with, “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the descendants of the former nation of Israel[w] from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banished[x] them.”[y] At that time they will live in their own land.’”
8 Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you[a] through an empty, deceitful philosophy[b] that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits[c] of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him all the fullness of deity lives[d] in bodily form, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11 In him you also were circumcised—not, however,[e] with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal[f] of the fleshly body,[g] that is,[h] through the circumcision done by Christ. 12 Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised with him through your[i] faith in the power[j] of God who raised him from the dead. 13 And even though you were dead in your[k] transgressions and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he nevertheless[l] made you alive with him, having forgiven all your transgressions. 14 He has destroyed[m] what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness[n] expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 Disarming[o] the rulers and authorities, he has made a public disgrace of them, triumphing over them by the cross.[p]
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you with respect to food or drink, or in the matter of a feast, new moon, or Sabbath days— 17 these are only[q] the shadow of the things to come, but the reality[r] is Christ![s] 18 Let no one who delights in false humility[t] and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths[u] about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind.[v] 19 He has not held fast[w] to the head from whom the whole body, supported[x] and knit together through its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God.[y]
20 If you have died with Christ to the elemental spirits[z] of the world, why do you submit to them as though you lived in the world? 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!” 22 These are all destined to perish with use, founded as they are[aa] on human commands and teachings.[ab] 23 Even though they have the appearance of wisdom[ac] with their self-imposed worship and humility achieved by an[ad] unsparing treatment of the body—a wisdom with no true value—they in reality result in fleshly indulgence.[ae]
7 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the solemn truth,[a] I am the door for the sheep.[b] 8 All who came before me were[c] thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.[d] 9 I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will come in and go out,[e] and find pasture.[f] 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill[g] and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.[h]
11 “I am the good[i] shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life[j] for the sheep. 12 The hired hand,[k] who is not a shepherd and does not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons[l] the sheep and runs away.[m] So the wolf attacks[n] the sheep and scatters them. 13 Because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep,[o] he runs away.[p]
14 “I am the good shepherd. I[q] know my own[r] and my own know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life[s] for[t] the sheep. 16 I have[u] other sheep that do not come from[v] this sheepfold.[w] I must bring them too, and they will listen to my voice,[x] so that[y] there will be one flock and[z] one shepherd. 17 This is why the Father loves me[aa]—because I lay down my life,[ab] so that I may take it back again.
