Psalm 119:97-120

MEM

97 I love your Law very much.
I think about it all the time.
98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies.
They are always in my thoughts.
99 I understand more than all my teachers,
because I think about your rules.
100 I understand more than people who are old,
    because I respect your teaching.
101 I do not follow evil ways,
so that I can obey your word.
102 I do not turn away from your rules,
    because you are my teacher.
103 Your words are very good.
They taste sweeter than honey in my mouth!
104 Your teaching helps me to understand things,
so I hate anything that is false.

NUN

105 Your word is like a lamp that shines as my guide.
It shows me the right way to live.
106 I have made a strong promise
that I will always obey your righteous rules.
107 I have a lot of trouble and pain.
Lord, please keep me safe,
as you have promised to do.
108 Lord, please accept the praise
that I choose to offer to you.
Teach me your rules.
109 My life is always in danger,
but I never forget your Law.
110 Wicked people try to catch me in a trap,
but I do not turn away from your teaching.
111 Your laws will always be with me.
They make me happy deep inside.
112 I have decided to obey your commands always,
until the end of my life.

SAMEKH

113 I hate hypocrites,
    but I love your Law.
114 You are the safe place where I can hide.
You keep me safe like a soldier's shield.
I know that I can trust your word.
115 Go away from me, you evil people!
I will obey my God's commands.
116 Help me to be strong, Lord,
    as your word promises.
Do not let me be ashamed because of my hope.
117 Please help me so that I will be safe.
Then I will always obey your commands.
118 You refuse people who turn away from your laws.
You do not accept them,
because they speak lies to deceive people.
119 The wicked people in the world are like rubbish to you.
So I choose to obey your rules.
120 I respect your great strength,
so that my body shakes with fear.
I am afraid of the laws by which you judge people.

Psalm 81-82

Asaph wrote this song for the music leader. Use special music.

God gives us strength[a]

81 Sing with joy to praise God!
He is the one who makes us strong!
Shout aloud to the God of Jacob.[b]
Start the music! Beat your tambourines!
Make beautiful music on your harps and lyres.
Start the New Moon Festival
with the sound of the trumpet.
Also do it on the day of the Full Moon.[c]
This is a rule for Israel's people.
The God of Jacob commanded us to do it.
When God punished the land of Egypt,
he gave this rule to Joseph's family.
I heard a voice that I did not know.
It said: ‘I took the heavy load off your back.
You no longer had to carry those heavy baskets.
When you had trouble, you called to me for help
    and I made you safe.
I answered your prayers
from the middle of the dark storm.
I tested you at Meribah,
when you had no water in the wilderness.
Selah.
I said, “My people, listen to me!
    I warn you now.
Listen carefully to me, Israel's people!
There must not be any strange god among you.
You must never worship a foreign god.
10 I am the Lord, your God.
I brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide,
and I will fill it with many good things.”[d]
11 But my people refused to listen to me.
My people, Israel, did not obey me.
12 So I let them follow their own proud ideas.
They could do whatever they wanted to do.
13 But my people should listen to me!
Yes, Israel should obey my commands!
14 Then I would quickly win against their enemies.
    I would attack them all.’
15 (Then people who hate the Lord
would fall down with fear in front of him.
They would be ashamed for ever.)
16 ‘But I would feed you, my people, with the best wheat.
I would give you plenty of honey from the rock,
for you to eat and be full.’

This is a psalm that Asaph wrote.

God and the gods[e]

82 God calls the powerful rulers to meet in heaven.
He sits on his throne to judge them.
He asks them, ‘How long will you continue to judge people
in a way that is not fair?
How long will you say that wicked people are right?
Selah.
You must help poor people and those with no family
    to receive justice.
Help those who have pain and trouble
to receive the help that they need.
Rescue weak and helpless people,
so that evil people cannot hurt them.
The powerful leaders know nothing
    and they understand nothing.
They walk about in a dark place.
At the same time the foundation of the earth shakes![f]
I said, “You are gods.
You are all sons of the Most High God.
But you will die, as all people die.
You will come to an end, like all other rulers.” ’[g]

God, now do something!
Judge all the nations of the earth.
For they all belong to you.

Jeremiah 8:18-9:6

18 I said,

‘I am very sad and upset.
I will never get better again.
19 Listen to my dear people!
They are calling out for help everywhere in the land.
They are saying, “Is the Lord still with us in Zion?
Is he still there to rule us as our King?” ’

The Lord replies,

‘They worship images of false gods.
    and useless foreign idols.
That has made me very angry.’

20 The people say,

‘We have taken in all our crops from the fields.
    The summer has finished.
And still nobody has rescued us.’

21 I am very upset
because my dear people have so much pain.
I weep and I cry, as if a friend had died.
22 Surely there is a medicine in Gilead.
There is a doctor there who can make my dear people better.
But my people are still ill.
    Why are they not better?

‘My head should be like a pool of water.
My eyes should be like a river of tears.
Then I would never stop crying
for my dear people who have died in war.
I would like to live in a hut in the desert.
Then I could leave my people.
    I could forget about them.
They have all turned away from God.
They have not been faithful to him.
They are a crowd of people that nobody can trust.’

The Lord answers Jeremiah

The Lord says,

‘The tongues of these people speak lies,
like the bows of soldiers shoot arrows.
They have become powerful in the land,
but they have used lies to do that.
They do more and more evil things,
and they do not respect me.
Be careful of your friends.
Do not even trust your brothers!
They will always try to cheat you.
All your friends will speak lies about you.
They deceive each other,
and they never tell the truth.
They have taught their tongues to speak lies.
They love to do bad things
    and they cannot stop themselves.
They hurt and they deceive each other.
They do that more and more.
They refuse to respect me.’

That is what the Lord says.

Romans 5:1-11

God's friends

So we see that God has accepted us as right because we believe in him. As a result, we are friends with God, because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us. Also, because we trust Jesus Christ, he has caused us to know that God is very kind. That makes us strong in our lives here. We also are sure that we will live with God in heaven. So we are very happy.[a]

We are happy even when we have troubles and pain. That is because we know that those troubles help us to become patient and strong. And when we remain strong, we show that we trust God. When we trust God like that, it causes us to hope for God's help. And when we hope like that, it will not disappoint us. That is because we know that God loves us very much. God has given his Holy Spirit to be with us. The Holy Spirit causes us to know God's love very well.

At one time we were weak and we could not help ourselves. Then, at the right time, Christ died to save us. He died on behalf of people who have turned away from God. Nobody will agree to die on behalf of another person, even if that person has done what is right. Maybe someone might be brave enough to die on behalf of a person who is very good. But God has shown us how much he loves us. Even when we still did not obey God, Christ died on our behalf.

Because Christ died on the cross, God has accepted us as right with himself. So we certainly know that Christ will save us when God judges everyone. Because of Jesus, God will not be angry with us and punish us. 10 While we were still God's enemies, God's Son died on our behalf. As a result, we became God's friends. So, now that we are God's friends, his Son will certainly save us. Christ will save us because he is alive again. 11 But that is not everything! We are very happy now because of what God has done for us. Our Lord Jesus Christ has made this possible. It is because of him that we have now become God's friends.

John 8:12-20

Jesus is the light of the world

12 Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, ‘I am the light of the world.[a] Those people who become my disciples will never walk in the dark. No, they will have the light that gives life.’

13 The Pharisees began to argue with him. They said, ‘You are saying things about yourself. But there is nobody else to agree that these things are true.’

14 Jesus answered, ‘What I say is true. Even if I do speak about myself, my words are true. I know where I have come from. I also know where I will go. As for you, you do not know where I came from. You do not know where I will go. 15 You judge in the way that people think. I do not judge anyone. 16 But if I did judge anyone, I would decide correctly what is right. That is because I am not alone. The Father has sent me, and he is with me. 17 Your own Law says, “There must be two people to agree that something is true.”[b] 18 I speak what is true about myself. The Father, who sent me, also speaks what is true about me.’

19 Then they asked him, ‘So where is your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You do not know either me or my Father. If you really knew me, you would also know my Father.’ 20 Jesus said all these words while he taught in the yard of the temple. He was near the place where they kept the gifts of money. But nobody took hold of him, because it was not the right time for that yet.
