Psalm 45

This is a special song that the sons of Korah wrote for the music leader. Sing it to the music that they call ‘Lilies.’

A love song[a]

45 This beautiful song makes my heart very happy.
I will sing this special poem to the king.
My voice is ready to sing it very well,
as well as a clever writer can write with a pen.

You are the most handsome man that there is.
You speak kind words in a beautiful way.
And so God will continue to bless you for ever.
Brave soldier, wear your sword at your side!
Show what a great king you are!
Wear your royal clothes
and ride out to win against your enemies!
Win the war on behalf of truth and justice!
Then your strong right hand will do powerful things!
Your sharp arrows will cut into the heart of your enemies.
Nations will fall down under your feet.
God, you will continue to rule as king
    always and for ever.
Your authority as king will bring justice to your people.
You love people to do what is right,
and you hate anything that is evil.
So God, your God, has chosen you
to be greater than all your people.
He has put special olive oil on you,
    to make you happy.
All your clothes have the beautiful smell
    of myrrh, aloes and cassia.
You hear the music of stringed instruments
    that comes from beautiful palaces.
That makes you happy.
The daughters of kings are among your visitors.
Your royal bride stands at your right hand.
She is wearing gold from Ophir.

10 Royal daughter, listen to me.
Listen carefully to what I am saying.
Forget your people and your family.
11 You are very beautiful
and the king will want to be with you.
He is your master, so respect him.
12 Rich people will come from Tyre to give gifts to you.
They will want you to help them.

13 The king's bride is in the palace,
    and she looks beautiful!
Her dress has gold threads in it.[b]
14 Now they lead her to the king in her beautiful clothes.
Her young friends follow after her
to bring her to the king.
15 They are very happy as they walk together
and they go into the king's palace.

16 You will have sons to become kings,
as your ancestors were kings before you.
You will make them princes
to rule over all the land.
17 In future years I will cause people to remember
that you are a great king!
Then people will praise you always and for ever.

Psalm 47-48

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

God rules the earth!

47 People from every nation,
    clap your hands together.
Shout aloud to God,
with the sound of happy songs.
The Lord, the Most High God, is wonderful.
He is the great King
who rules over the whole earth.
He has won the battle against our enemies,
and those nations are now under our power.
He chose a special land to belong to us.
Jacob's descendants are proud of that land.
They are his own people that he loves.
Selah.
God has gone up to sit on his throne,
    while the people shout aloud.
The Lord has gone up there,
while the trumpets make a loud noise.
Sing to praise God! Yes, sing!
Sing to praise our king! Sing!
God is the King who rules over the whole earth!
So sing a special song to praise him!
God rules over the nations.
God is sitting on his holy throne.
The leaders of the nations have met together.
They have joined with the people who serve Abraham's God.[a]
God has authority over all the world's rulers
    and their armies.
Everyone should praise him,
    for he is great!

This is a psalm that the sons of Korah wrote.

Zion is God's city

48 The Lord is great.
He deserves that people praise him
in the city of our God,
    on his holy mountain.
That place is high up and it is beautiful.
It brings joy to the whole world.
Mount Zion is the city of the great King.
It is where the true God lives.[b]
God is there in its strong places
and he keeps the city safe.
Look! There are kings of other nations
who join together to attack our city.
But when they come near and they see it,
    they are very surprised.
It frightens them so much
    that they quickly run away!
They cannot stop themselves shaking,
like a woman who is giving birth to a baby!
You push them away,
like an east wind that destroys great ships.
We had heard about the great things that God has done.
Now we have seen them for ourselves,
here in the city of the Lord Almighty,
    the city of our God.
It is God who keeps the city safe for ever!
Selah.
When we are in your temple, God,
we think about your faithful love.
10 You are famous all over the world,
so that people praise you as you deserve.
You are powerful
    and you rule with justice.
11 Because you judge people in a right way,
Mount Zion and all the towns of Judah will be happy.
12 Walk all round Zion and look at it.
    Count the towers.
13 Look at its strong buildings and its strong walls.
Then you will be able to describe it to your children.[c]
14 Yes, this is our God, who is with us for ever!
He will always be our guide.

Deuteronomy 9:4-12

The Lord your God will chase them away. After he has done that, be careful! Do not say to yourselves, ‘The Lord has brought us into this land because we do right things.’

No! It is because these nations are doing wicked things. That is why the Lord is chasing them out of the land so that you can live there. It is not because you are doing right things. It is not because you are good, honest people. That is not the reason that you will take their land for yourselves. Instead, it is because these nations are wicked people. That is why the Lord your God will chase them away as you move in there. He will do what he promised to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. You must understand this. The Lord your God is not giving you this good land to live in because you are doing right things. No! You are proud people who do not want to obey me.

The gold calf

Remember how you made the Lord your God angry when you were in the desert. Never forget that! Since you left Egypt, you have always turned against the Lord your God. You have continued to make him angry all the time until you arrived here. When you were at Sinai you made him angry enough to destroy you. I climbed the mountain to meet with the Lord. I received the two flat stones with the covenant that he had made with you. I stayed there for 40 days and nights. During that time, I did not eat or drink anything. 10 Then the Lord gave the two flat stones to me. He had written all his commands on the stones with his own finger. The Lord spoke those commands to you from middle of the fire. That was on the day when you all came together at the mountain.

11 After those 40 days and nights, the Lord gave me the two flat stones. They had his covenant on them. 12 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Now go down the mountain! The people that you led out of Egypt have done something very bad. They have already refused to obey my commands. They have used gold to make an idol for themselves.’

Hebrews 3:1-11

Jesus is greater than Moses

So, Christian friends, think carefully about who Jesus is. Like us, God has chosen you to belong to him. We tell people that we believe in Jesus as the messenger that God has sent. He helps us as God's most important priest. That is what God sent Jesus to do. Jesus did everything that God wanted, just like Moses. Moses served God well when he was the leader of God's people long ago. We know that someone who builds a house is more important than the house itself. In the same way, we should praise Jesus more than we praise Moses, because Jesus is greater. Every house has someone who built it. But God is the one who has built all things. We say that Moses served God well, like a servant in God's house. He took care of all God's people. In this way, Moses showed clearly the message that God would speak later. But Christ serves in God's house as a son, not as a servant. He is the leader of God's people today. And we are God's people. We belong to his house if we continue to believe in Christ. We must be brave. We must continue to show people clearly that we trust God. He will do what he has promised to do.

A place where God's people can rest

God's Holy Spirit says this:

‘You must listen when you hear God speak today.
Do not refuse to obey him.
Do not be like God's people many years ago.
When they travelled in the wilderness, they turned against me.
They wanted to see if I would punish them.
For 40 years your ancestors saw the great things that I did.
But still they did not obey me.
10 That is why I became angry with them.
I said, “They always want to do what is wrong.
They refuse to understand my message.”
11 Because of that, I promised to punish them.
Because I was angry with them, I said,
“They will never arrive in my special place of rest.” ’[a]

John 2:13-22

13 It was almost time for the Jewish Passover festival. So Jesus went to Jerusalem.[a] 14 He went into the yard of the temple. There he found people who were selling cows, sheep and doves. Other people were sitting at tables to change coins for people. 15 So Jesus made a whip from some pieces of rope. Then he made all the people leave the temple quickly, with the sheep and the cows. He threw onto the ground all the coins of the men who changed money. He turned their tables over. 16 He said to the people who sold birds, ‘Take them out of here! Do not make my Father's house into a market!’ 17 His disciples remembered what it says in the Bible: ‘My love for your house burns inside me like a fire.’[b]

18 Then the Jews asked Jesus, ‘What is your authority to do this? Do a miracle to show us that you really do have authority.’ 19 Jesus answered them, ‘If you destroy this house of God, I will build it up again in three days.’ 20 The Jews replied, ‘People have worked for 46 years to build this house. But you say that you will build it again in three days!’ 21 But the house that Jesus was speaking about was his own body. 22 The disciples remembered this when Jesus had become alive again after his death. They remembered that he had said this. Then they believed what the Bible taught. They also believed the words that Jesus had spoken.
