Psalm 95

Psalm 95

Come, let’s sing joyfully to Yahweh.
Let’s shout happily to the rock of our salvation.
Let’s come into his presence with a song of thanksgiving.
Let’s shout happily to him with psalms.
Yahweh is a great El and a great Melek above all gods.
In his hand are the deep places of the earth,
and the mountain peaks are his.
The sea is his.
He made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let’s worship and bow down.
Let’s kneel in front of Yahweh, our maker,
        because he is our Elohim
and we are the people in his care,
                the flock that he leads.

If only you would listen to him today!
“Do not be stubborn like my people were at Meribah,
like the time at Massah in the desert.
Your ancestors challenged me and tested me there,
although they had seen what I had done.
10 For 40 years I was disgusted with those people.
So I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts continue to stray.
They have not learned my ways.’
11 That is why I angrily took this solemn oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest!’”

Psalm 32

Psalm 32

A psalm by David; a maskil.[a]

Blessed is the person whose disobedience is forgiven
    and whose sin is pardoned.
Blessed is the person whom Yahweh no longer accuses of sin
and who has no deceitful thoughts.

When I kept silent about my sins,
my bones began to weaken because of my groaning all day long.
Day and night your hand laid heavily on me.
My strength shriveled in the summer heat. Selah

I made my sins known to you, and I did not cover up my guilt.
I decided to confess them to you, O Yahweh.
Then you forgave all my sins. Selah

For this reason let all godly people pray to you
    when you may be found.
Then raging floodwater will not reach them.

You are my hiding place.
    You protect me from trouble.
You surround me with joyous songs of salvation. Selah

The Lord says,
    “I will instruct you.
I will teach you the way that you should go.
I will advise you as my eyes watch over you.
Don’t be stubborn like a horse or mule.
They need a bit and bridle in their mouth to restrain them,
or they will not come near you.”

10 Many heartaches await wicked people,
but mercy surrounds those who trust Yahweh.

11 Be glad and find joy in Yahweh, you righteous people.
Sing with joy, all whose motives are decent.

Psalm 143

Psalm 143

A psalm by David.

O Yahweh, listen to my prayer.
Open your ears to hear my urgent requests.
Answer me because you are faithful and righteous.
Do not take me to court for judgment,
because there is no one alive
who is righteous in your presence.

The enemy has pursued me.
He has ground my life into the dirt.
He has made me live in dark places
like those who have died long ago.
That is why I begin to lose hope
and my heart is in a state of shock.

I remember the days long ago.
I reflect on all that you have done.
I carefully consider what your hands have made.
I stretch out my hands to you in prayer.
Like parched land, my soul thirsts for you. Selah

Answer me quickly, O Yahweh.
    My spirit is worn out.
Do not hide your face from me,
or I will be like those who go into the pit.
Let me hear about your mercy in the morning,
    because I trust you.
Let me know the way that I should go,
    because I long for you.
Rescue me from my enemies, O Yahweh.
I come to you for protection.

10 Teach me to do your will, because you are my Elohim.
May your good Ruach lead me on level ground.
11 O Yahweh, keep me alive for the sake of your name.
Because you are righteous, lead me out of trouble.
12 In keeping with your mercy, wipe out my enemies
and destroy all who torment me,
        because I am your servant.

Psalm 102

Psalm 102

A prayer by someone who is suffering, when he is weary and pours out his troubles in Yahweh’s presence.

O Yahweh, hear my prayer,
and let my cry for help come to you.
Do not hide your face from me when I am in trouble.
    Turn your ear toward me.
Answer me quickly when I call.
My days disappear like smoke.
My bones burn like hot coals.
My heart is beaten down and withered like grass
because I have forgotten about eating.
I am nothing but skin and bones
    because of my loud groans.
I am like a desert owl,
like an owl living in the ruins.
I lie awake.
I am like a lonely bird on a rooftop.
All day long my enemies insult me.
Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse.
I eat ashes like bread
and my tears are mixed with my drink
10 because of your hostility and anger,
because you have picked me up and thrown me away.
11 My days are like a shadow that is getting longer,
and I wither away like grass.

12 But you, O Yahweh, remain forever.
You are remembered throughout every generation.
13 You will rise and have compassion on Zion,
because it is time to grant a favor to it.
Indeed, the appointed time has come.
14 Your servants value Zion’s stones,
    and they pity its rubble.
15 The nations will fear Yahweh’s name.
All the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
16 When Yahweh builds Zion,
he will appear in his glory.
17 He will turn his attention to the prayers
of those who have been abandoned.
He will not despise their prayers.
18 This will be written down for a future generation
so that a people yet to be created may praise Yah:
19 Yahweh looked down from his holy place high above.
From heaven he looked at the earth.
20 He heard the groans of the prisoners
and set free those who were condemned to death.
21 Yahweh’s name is announced in Zion
    and his praise in Jerusalem
22 when nations and kingdoms gather
    to worship Yahweh.”

23 He has weakened my strength along the way.
He has reduced the number of my days.
24 I said, “My El, don’t take me now in the middle of my life.
Your years continue on throughout every generation.
25 Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth.
Even the heavens are the works of your hands.
26 They will come to an end, but you will still go on.
They will all wear out like clothing.
You will change them like clothes,
and they will be thrown away.
27 But you remain the same, and your life will never end.
28 The children of your servants will go on living here.
Their descendants will be secure in your presence.”

Psalm 130

Psalm 130

A song for going up to worship.

O Yahweh, out of the depths I call to you.
O Adonay, hear my voice.
Let your ears be open to my pleas for mercy.
O Yahweh, who would be able to stand
if you kept a record of sins?
But with you there is forgiveness
so that you can be feared.
I wait for Yahweh, my soul waits,
and with hope I wait for his word.
My soul waits for Adonay
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, put your hope in Yahweh,
because with Yahweh there is mercy
and with him there is unlimited forgiveness.
He will rescue Israel from all its sins.

Jonah 3-4

Nineveh Turns from Its Wicked Ways

Then Yahweh spoke his word to Jonah a second time. He said, “Leave at once for the important city, Nineveh. Announce to the people the message I have given you.”

Jonah immediately went to Nineveh as Yahweh told him. Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through[a] it. Jonah entered the city and walked for about a day. Then he said, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed.”

The people of Nineveh believed Elohim. They decided to fast, and everyone, from the most important to the least important, dressed in sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he made this announcement and sent it throughout the city:

“This is an order from the king and his nobles: No one is to eat or drink anything. This includes all people, animals, cattle, and sheep. Every person and animal must put on sackcloth. Cry loudly to Elohim for help. Turn from your wicked ways and your acts of violence. Who knows? Elohim may reconsider his plans and turn from his burning anger so that we won’t die.”

10 Elohim saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So Elohim reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

The Lord Has to Remind Jonah about His Mercy

Jonah was very upset about this, and he became angry. So he prayed to Yahweh, “Yahweh, isn’t this what I said would happen when I was still in my own country? That’s why I tried to run to Tarshish in the first place. I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate El, patient, and always ready to forgive and to reconsider your threats of destruction. So now, Yahweh, take my life. I’d rather be dead than alive.”

Yahweh asked, “What right do you have to be angry?”

Jonah left the city and sat down east of it. He made himself a shelter there. He sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Yahweh Elohim made a plant grow up beside Jonah to give him shade and make him more comfortable. Jonah was very happy with the plant.

At dawn the next day, Elohim sent a worm to attack the plant so that it withered. When the sun rose, Elohim made a hot east wind blow. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he was about to faint. He wanted to die. So he said, “I’d rather be dead than alive.”

Then Elohim asked Jonah, “What right do you have to be angry over this plant?”

Jonah answered, “I have every right to be angry—so angry that I want to die.”

10 Yahweh replied, “This plant grew up overnight and died overnight. You didn’t plant it or make it grow. Yet, you feel sorry for this plant. 11 Shouldn’t I feel sorry for this important city, Nineveh? It has more than 120,000 people in it as well as many animals. These people couldn’t tell their right hand from their left.”

Hebrews 12:1-14

Faith Directs Our Lives

12 Since we are surrounded by so many examples of faith, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up. We must focus on Yeshua, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Then he received the highest position in heaven, the one next to the throne of God. Think about Yeshua, who endured opposition from sinners, so that you don’t become tired and give up.

You struggle against sin, but your struggles haven’t killed you. You have forgotten the encouraging words that God speaks to you as his children:

“My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you.
Don’t give up when he corrects you.
The Lord disciplines everyone he loves.
He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child.”

Endure your discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children. All children are disciplined by their fathers. If you aren’t disciplined like the other children, you aren’t part of the family. On earth we have fathers who disciplined us, and we respect them. Shouldn’t we place ourselves under the authority of God, the father of spirits, so that we will live? 10 For a short time our fathers disciplined us as they thought best. Yet, God disciplines us for our own good so that we can become holy like him. 11 We don’t enjoy being disciplined. It always seems to cause more pain than joy. But later on, those who learn from that discipline have peace that comes from doing what is right.

12 Strengthen your tired arms and weak knees. 13 Keep walking along straight paths so that your injured leg won’t get worse. Instead, let it heal.

14 Try to live peacefully with everyone, and try to live holy lives, because if you don’t, you will not see the Lord.

Luke 18:9-14

A Pharisee and a Tax Collector

Yeshua also used this illustration with some who were sure that God approved of them while they looked down on everyone else. 10 He said, “Two men went into the temple courtyard to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people! I’m not a robber or a dishonest person. I haven’t committed adultery. I’m not even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my entire income.’

13 “But the tax collector was standing at a distance. He wouldn’t even look up to heaven. Instead, he became very upset, and he said, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

14 “I can guarantee that this tax collector went home with God’s approval, but the Pharisee didn’t. Everyone who honors himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be honored.”
