Contemporary English Version (CEV)
Version
Psalm 117-118

Come Praise the Lord

(A) All of you nations,
come praise the Lord!
    Let everyone praise him.
God's love for us is wonderful;
his faithfulness never ends.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

The Lord Is Always Merciful

(B) Tell the Lord
    how thankful you are,
because he is kind
    and always merciful.

Let Israel shout,
    “God is always merciful!”
Let the family of Aaron
the priest shout,
    “God is always merciful!”
Let every true worshiper
of the Lord shout,
    “God is always merciful!”

When I was really hurting,
    I prayed to the Lord.
He answered my prayer,
    and took my worries away.
(C) The Lord is on my side,
and I am not afraid
of what others can do to me.
With the Lord on my side,
I will defeat
    my hateful enemies.
It is better to trust the Lord
    for protection
than to trust anyone else,
    including strong leaders.

10 Nations surrounded me,
but I got rid of them
by the power of the Lord.
11 They attacked from all sides,
but I got rid of them
by the power of the Lord.
12 They swarmed around like bees,
but by the power of the Lord,
    I got rid of them
    and their fiery sting.
13 Their attacks were so fierce
that I nearly fell,
    but the Lord helped me.
14 (D) My power and my strength
come from the Lord,
    and he has saved me.

15 From the tents of God's people
come shouts of victory:
    “The Lord is powerful!
16 With his mighty arm
the Lord wins victories!
    The Lord is powerful!”

17 And so my life is safe,
and I will live to tell
    what the Lord has done.
18 He punished me terribly,
but he did not let death
    lay its hands on me.

19 Open the gates of justice!
I will enter and tell the Lord
    how thankful I am.

20 Here is the gate of the Lord!
Everyone who does right
    may enter this gate.

21 I praise the Lord
for answering my prayers
    and saving me.
22 (E)(F) The stone that the builders
    tossed aside
has now become
    the most important stone.

23 The Lord has done this,
and it is amazing to us.
24 This day belongs to the Lord!
Let's celebrate
    and be glad today.
25 (G) We'll ask the Lord to save us!
We'll sincerely ask the Lord
    to let us win.

26 (H) God bless the one who comes
in the name of the Lord!
We praise you from here
in the house of the Lord.

27 The Lord is our God,
and he has given us light!
Start the celebration!
March with palm branches
all the way to the altar.[a]

28 The Lord is my God!
I will praise him and tell him
    how thankful I am.

29 Tell the Lord
    how thankful you are,
because he is kind
    and always merciful.

Psalm 112-113

God Blesses His Worshipers

Shout praises to the Lord!
    The Lord blesses everyone
who worships him and gladly
    obeys his teachings.
Their descendants will have
    great power in the land,
because the Lord blesses
    all who do right.
They will get rich and prosper
and will always be remembered
    for their fairness.
They will be so kind
    and merciful and good,
that they will be a light
in the dark for others
    who do the right thing.

Life will go well for those
who freely lend
    and are honest in business.
They won't ever be troubled,
and the kind things they do
    will never be forgotten.
Bad news won't bother them;
they have decided
    to trust the Lord.
They are dependable
    and not afraid,
and they will live to see
    their enemies defeated.
(A) They will always be remembered
    and greatly praised,
because they were kind
and freely gave to the poor.
10 When evil people see this,
they angrily bite their tongues
    and disappear.
They will never get
    what they really want.

The Lord Helps People in Need

Shout praises to the Lord!
Everyone who serves him,
    come and praise his name.

Let the name of the Lord
    be praised now and forever.
From dawn until sunset
the name of the Lord
    deserves to be praised.
The Lord is far above
    all of the nations;
he is more glorious
    than the heavens.

No one can compare
    with the Lord our God.
His throne is high above,
and he looks down to see
    the heavens and the earth.
God lifts the poor and needy
    from dust and ashes,
and he lets them take part
    in ruling his people.
When a wife has no children,
    he blesses her with some,
and she is happy.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

Isaiah 59:15-21

15 Everyone tells lies;
those who turn from crime
    end up ruined.

The Lord Will Rescue His People

When the Lord noticed
that justice had disappeared,
    he became very displeased.
16 (A) It disgusted him even more
to learn that no one
would do a thing about it.
So with his own powerful arm,
    he won victories for truth.
17 (B) Justice was the Lord's armor;
    saving power was his helmet;
anger and revenge
    were his clothes.

18 Now the Lord will get furious
    and do to his enemies,
both near and far,
what they did to his people.
19 He will attack like a flood
    in a mighty windstorm.
Nations in the west and the east
will then honor and praise
    his wonderful name.
20 (C) The Lord has promised to rescue
    the city of Zion
and Jacob's descendants
    who turn from sin.

21 The Lord says: “My people,
I promise to give you my Spirit
    and my message.
These will be my gifts to you
    and your families forever.
I, the Lord, have spoken.”

Revelation 2:8-17

The Letter to Smyrna

(A) This is what you must write to the angel of the church in Smyrna:

I am the first and the last. I died, but now I am alive! Listen to what I say.

I know how much you suffer and how poor you are, but you are rich. I also know the cruel things being said about you by people who claim to be God's people. But they are not really God's people. They are a group that belongs to Satan.

10 Don't worry about what you will suffer. The devil will throw some of you into jail, and you will be tested and made to suffer for ten days. But if you are faithful until you die, I will reward you with a glorious life.[a]

11 (B) If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. Whoever wins the victory will not be hurt by the second death.[b]

The Letter to Pergamum

12 This is what you must write to the angel of the church in Pergamum:

I am the one who has the sharp double-edged sword! Listen to what I say.

13 I know you live where Satan has his throne.[c] But you have kept true to my name. Right there where Satan lives, my faithful witness Antipas[d] was taken from you and put to death. Even then you did not give up your faith in me.

14 (C) I do have a few things against you. Some of you are following the teaching of Balaam.[e] Long ago he told Balak to teach the people of Israel to eat food that had been offered to idols and to be immoral. 15 Now some of you are following the teaching of the Nicolaitans.[f] 16 Turn back! If you don't, I will come quickly and fight against these people. And my words will cut like a sword.

17 (D) If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. To everyone who wins the victory, I will give some of the hidden food.[g] I will also give each one a white stone[h] with a new name[i] written on it. No one will know that name except the one who is given the stone.

John 4:46-54

46 (A) While Jesus was in Galilee, he returned to the village of Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was an official in Capernaum whose son was sick. 47 And when the man heard that Jesus had come from Judea, he went and begged him to keep his son from dying.

48 Jesus told the official, “You won't have faith unless you see miracles and wonders!”

49 The man replied, “Lord, please come before my son dies!”

50 Jesus then said, “Your son will live. Go on home to him.” The man believed Jesus and started back home.

51 Some of the official's servants met him along the road and told him, “Your son is better!” 52 He asked them when the boy got better, and they answered, “The fever left him yesterday at one o'clock.”

53 The boy's father realized that at one o'clock the day before, Jesus had told him, “Your son will live!” So the man and everyone in his family put their faith in Jesus.

54 This was the second miracle[a] that Jesus worked after he left Judea and went to Galilee.
