Psalm 1-4

Psalm 1

The Two Ways

How happy is the one who does not
walk in the advice of the wicked
or stand in the pathway with sinners
or sit in the company of mockers!(A)
Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction,
and he meditates on it day and night.(B)
He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams[a]
that bears its fruit in its season,(C)
and its leaf does not wither.(D)
Whatever he does prospers.(E)

The wicked are not like this;
instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.(F)
Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment,(G)
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,(H)
but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.(I)

Psalm 2

Coronation of the Son

Why(J) do the nations rage(K)
and the peoples plot in vain?(L)
The kings of the earth take their stand,(M)
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[b](N)
“Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”(O)

The one enthroned[c] in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.(P)
Then he speaks to them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath:(Q)
“I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”(R)

I will declare the Lord’s decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;[d]
today I have become your Father.(S)
Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance
and the ends of the earth your possession.(T)
You will break them with an iron scepter;
you will shatter them like pottery.”(U)

10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.(V)
12 Pay homage to[e] the Son or he will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,[f](W)
for his anger may ignite at any moment.(X)
All who take refuge in him are happy.(Y)

Psalm 3

Confidence in Troubled Times

A psalm of David when he fled from his son Absalom.(Z)

Lord, how my foes increase!
There are many who attack me.(AA)
Many say about me,
“There is no help for him in God.”(AB)Selah

But you, Lord, are a shield around me,(AC)
my glory,(AD) and the one who lifts up my head.(AE)
I cry aloud to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.(AF)Selah

I lie down and sleep;
I wake again because the Lord sustains me.(AG)
I will not be afraid of thousands of people
who have taken their stand against me on every side.(AH)

Rise up, Lord!(AI)
Save me, my God!
You strike all my enemies on the cheek;(AJ)
you break the teeth of the wicked.(AK)
Salvation belongs to the Lord;(AL)
may your blessing be on your people.(AM)Selah

Psalm 4

A Night Prayer

For the choir director: with stringed instruments.(AN) A psalm of David.

Answer me when I call,
God, who vindicates me.[g](AO)
You freed me from affliction;(AP)
be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

How long, exalted ones,[h] will my honor be insulted?(AQ)
How long will you love what is worthless(AR)
and pursue a lie? Selah
Know that the Lord has set apart
the faithful for himself;
the Lord will hear when I call to him.
Be angry[i] and do not sin;(AS)
reflect in your heart while on your bed and be silent.(AT) Selah
Offer sacrifices in righteousness[j](AU)
and trust in the Lord.(AV)

Many are asking, “Who can show us anything good?”
Let the light of your face shine on us, Lord.(AW)

You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and new wine abound.(AX)
I will both lie down and sleep in peace,(AY)
for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.(AZ)

Psalm 7

Psalm 7

Prayer for Justice

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.

Lord my God, I seek refuge in you;(A)
save me from all my pursuers and rescue me,(B)
or they[a] will tear me like a lion,
ripping me apart with no one to rescue me.(C)

Lord my God, if I have done this,
if there is injustice on my hands,(D)
if I have done harm to one at peace with me(E)
or have plundered[b] my adversary without cause,(F)
may an enemy pursue and overtake me;
may he trample me to the ground(G)
and leave my honor in the dust.(H)Selah

Rise up, Lord, in your anger;
lift yourself up against the fury of my adversaries;(I)
awake for me;[c](J)
you have ordained a judgment.(K)
Let the assembly of peoples gather around you;(L)
take your seat on high over it.(M)
The Lord judges the peoples;(N)
vindicate me, Lord,
according to my righteousness and my integrity.(O)

Let the evil of the wicked come to an end,(P)
but establish the righteous.(Q)
The one who examines the thoughts and emotions[d]
is a righteous God.(R)
10 My shield is with God,(S)
who saves the upright in heart.(T)
11 God is a righteous judge
and a God who shows his wrath every day.(U)

12 If anyone does not repent,
he will sharpen his sword;(V)
he has strung his bow and made it ready.(W)
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons;
he tips his arrows with fire.(X)

14 See, the wicked one is pregnant with evil,
conceives trouble, and gives birth to deceit.(Y)
15 He dug a pit and hollowed it out
but fell into the hole he had made.(Z)
16 His trouble comes back on his own head;
his own violence comes down on top of his head.(AA)

17 I will thank the Lord for his righteousness;
I will sing about the name of the Lord Most High.(AB)

Proverbs 3:11-20

11 Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son,
and do not loathe his discipline;(A)
12 for the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.(B)

Wisdom Brings Happiness

13 Happy is a man who finds wisdom(C)
and who acquires understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver,
and her revenue is better than gold.(D)
15 She is more precious than jewels;(E)
nothing you desire can equal her.(F)
16 Long life[a] is in her right hand;
in her left, riches and honor.(G)
17 Her ways are pleasant,(H)
and all her paths, peaceful.
18 She is a tree of life(I) to those who embrace her,
and those who hold on to her are happy.

19 The Lord founded the earth by wisdom(J)
and established the heavens by understanding.
20 By his knowledge the watery depths broke open,(K)
and the clouds dripped with dew.(L)

1 John 3:18-4:6

18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.(A)

19 This is how we will know that we belong to the truth(B) and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.(C)

21 Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands(D) and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23 Now this is his command: that we believe in the name(E) of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps his commands remains in him,(F) and he in him. And the way we know that he remains in us(G) is from the Spirit(H) he has given us.

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits(I) to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(J) is from God,(K) but every spirit that does not confess Jesus[a] is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(L) which you have heard is coming; even now it is already in the world.

You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you(M) is greater than the one who is in the world.(N) They are from the world.(O) Therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Anyone who knows God listens to us;(P) anyone who is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception.(Q)

Matthew 11:1-6

John the Baptist Doubts

11 When Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.(A) Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples(B) and asked him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (C)

Jesus replied to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,(D) and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”(E)
