צ Tsade

137 You are righteous, Lord,(A)
and your judgments are just.
138 The decrees you issue are righteous
and altogether trustworthy.(B)
139 My anger overwhelms me
because my foes forget your words.(C)
140 Your word is completely pure,(D)
and your servant loves it.(E)
141 I am insignificant and despised,(F)
but I do not forget your precepts.(G)
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
and your instruction is true.(H)
143 Trouble and distress have overtaken me,
but your commands are my delight.(I)
144 Your decrees are righteous forever.(J)
Give me understanding, and I will live.

ק Qoph

145 I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord.
I will obey your statutes.(K)
146 I call to you; save me,
and I will keep your decrees.(L)
147 I rise before dawn and cry out for help;(M)
I put my hope in your word.
148 I am awake through each watch of the night
to meditate on your promise.(N)
149 In keeping with your faithful love, hear my voice.
Lord, give me life in keeping with your justice.(O)
150 Those who pursue evil plans[a](P) come near;
they are far from your instruction.
151 You are near, Lord,(Q)
and all your commands are true.(R)
152 Long ago I learned from your decrees
that you have established them forever.(S)

ר Resh

153 Consider my affliction and rescue me,(T)
for I have not forgotten your instruction.(U)
154 Champion my cause and redeem me;(V)
give me life as you promised.
155 Salvation is far from the wicked
because they do not study your statutes.(W)
156 Your compassions are many, Lord;(X)
give me life according to your judgments.
157 My persecutors and foes are many.(Y)
I have not turned from your decrees.(Z)
158 I have seen the disloyal(AA) and feel disgust(AB)
because they do not keep your word.
159 Consider how I love your precepts;
Lord, give me life according to your faithful love.(AC)
160 The entirety of your word is truth,
each of your righteous judgments endures forever.(AD)

Job 23:1-12

Job’s Reply to Eliphaz

23 Then Job answered:

Today also my complaint is bitter.[a](A)
His[b] hand is heavy despite my groaning.
If only I knew how to find him,
so that I could go to his throne.
I would plead my case before him(B)
and fill my mouth with arguments.
I would learn how[c] he would answer me;
and understand what he would say to me.
Would he prosecute(C) me forcefully?
No, he would certainly pay attention to me.
Then an upright man could reason(D) with him,
and I would escape from my Judge[d](E) forever.

If I go east, he is not there,
and if I go west, I cannot perceive him.(F)
When he is at work to the north, I cannot see him;
when he turns south, I cannot find him.
10 Yet he knows the way I have taken;[e]
when he has tested me,(G) I will emerge as pure gold.
11 My feet have followed in his tracks;
I have kept to his way(H) and not turned aside.
12 I have not departed from the commands from his lips;
I have treasured[f] the words(I) from his mouth
more than my daily food.

John 1:43-51

Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus[a] decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip(A) and told him, “Follow me.”

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida,(B) the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael(C) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets(D)): Jesus the son of Joseph,(E) from Nazareth.”(F)

46 “Can anything good(G) come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.

“Come and see,” Philip answered.

47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite(H) in whom there is no deceit.”

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

49 “Rabbi,”(I) Nathanael replied, “You are the Son(J) of God; you are the King of Israel!” (K)

50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God(L) ascending and descending(M) on the Son of Man.”(N)

Psalm 139

Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Lord, you have searched me and known me.(A)
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
you understand my thoughts from far away.(B)
You observe my travels and my rest;
you are aware of all my ways.(C)
Before a word is on my tongue,
you know all about it, Lord.(D)
You have encircled me;
you have placed your hand on me.(E)
This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.(F)

Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?(G)
If I go up to heaven, you are there;(H)
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.(I)
If I fly on the wings of the dawn
and settle down on the western horizon,[a]
10 even there your hand will lead me;
your right hand will hold on to me.(J)
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light around me will be night”(K)
12 even the darkness is not dark to you.
The night shines like the day;
darkness and light are alike to you.(L)

13 For it was you who created my inward parts;[b]
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.(M)
14 I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.[c][d]
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.(N)
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.(O)
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.(P)

17 God, how precious[e] your thoughts are to me;
how vast their sum is!
18 If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;(Q)
when I wake up,[f] I am still with you.(R)

19 God, if only you would kill the wicked—
you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me(S)
20 who invoke you deceitfully.
Your enemies swear by you falsely.(T)
21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate you,
and detest those who rebel against you?
22 I hate them with extreme hatred;
I consider them my enemies.(U)

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.(V)
24 See if there is any offensive[g] way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.(W)

John 12:20-26

Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion

20 Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 So they came to Philip,(A) who was from Bethsaida(B) in Galilee,(C) and requested of him, “Sir,(D) we want to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew;(E) then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man(F) to be glorified. 24 Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat(G) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.(H) 25 The one who loves his life will lose it,(I) and the one who hates(J) his life(K) in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant(L) also will be.(M) If anyone serves me, the Father will honor(N) him.
