Book of Common Prayer
The Lord’s Power and Dominion.
97 (A)The Lord [a]reigns, may the (B)earth rejoice;
May the many [b](C)islands be joyful.
2 (D)Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
(E)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
3 (F)Fire goes before Him
And (G)burns up His enemies all around.
4 His (H)lightning lit up the world;
The earth saw it and (I)trembled.
5 The mountains (J)melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the (K)Lord of the whole earth.
6 The (L)heavens declare His righteousness,
And (M)all the peoples have seen His glory.
7 May all those be ashamed who serve (N)carved images,
Who boast in (O)idols;
[c](P)Worship Him, all you [d]gods.
8 Zion [e]heard this and (Q)was joyful,
And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
Because of Your judgments, Lord.
9 For You are the Lord (R)Most High over all the earth;
You are exalted far (S)above all [f]gods.
10 (T)Hate evil, you who love the Lord,
Who (U)watches over the souls of His godly ones;
He (V)saves them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (W)Light is sown like seed for the righteous,
And (X)gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be (Y)joyful in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And (Z)praise [g]the mention of His holy name.
A Call to Praise the Lord for His Righteousness.
A Psalm.
98 Sing a (AA)new song to the Lord,
For He has done (AB)wonderful things,
His (AC)right hand and His (AD)holy arm have [h]gained the victory for Him.
2 (AE)The Lord has made His salvation known;
He has (AF)revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.
3 He has (AG)remembered His graciousness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(AH)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4 (AI)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
(AJ)Be cheerful and sing for joy and sing praises.
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the (AK)lyre,
With the lyre and the [i](AL)sound of melody.
6 With (AM)trumpets and the sound of the horn
(AN)Shout joyfully before (AO)the King, the Lord.
7 May the (AP)sea roar and [j]all it contains,
The (AQ)world and those who dwell in it.
8 May the (AR)rivers clap their hands,
May the (AS)mountains sing together for joy
9 Before the Lord, for He is coming to (AT)judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And (AU)the peoples with fairness.
22 “The Lord [a]created me (A)at the beginning of His way,
Before His works [b]of old.
23 From eternity I was [c](B)established,
From the beginning, (C)from the earliest times of the earth.
24 When there were no (D)ocean depths, I was born,
When there were no springs abounding with water.
25 (E)Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was born;
26 While He had not yet made the earth and the [d]fields,
Nor the first dust of the world.
27 When He (F)established the heavens, I was there;
When (G)He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
28 When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became [e]fixed,
29 When (H)He set a boundary for the sea
So that the water would not violate His [f]command,
When He marked out (I)the foundations of the earth;
30 Then (J)I was beside Him, as a master workman;
And I was His delight daily,
[g]Rejoicing always before Him,
20 Truly, truly I say to you, (A)the one who [a]receives anyone I send, [b]receives Me; and the one who [c]receives Me [d]receives Him who sent Me.”
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had said these things, He (B)became troubled in spirit, and [e]testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that (C)one of you will [f]betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, (D)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 Lying back on (E)Jesus’ chest was one of His disciples, (F)whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *nodded to this disciple and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He then simply (G)leaned back on Jesus’ chest and *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, (H)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After [g]this, (I)Satan then (J)entered him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you are doing, do it quickly.” 28 Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were assuming, since Judas (K)kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need (L)for the feast”; or else, that he was to [h](M)give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately; and (N)it was night.
31 Therefore when he had left, Jesus *said, “Now [i]is (O)the Son of Man (P)glorified, and (Q)God [j]is glorified in Him; 32 [k]if God is glorified in Him, (R)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 (S)Little children, I am still with you (T)a little longer. (U)You will look for Me; and just as I said to the [l]Jews, now I also say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I am giving you a (V)new commandment, (W)that you love one another; (X)just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (Y)By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”
The Lord Exalted for His Goodness.
A Psalm of Praise, of David.
145 I will (A)exalt You, (B)my God, the King,
And I will (C)bless Your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless You,
And I will (D)praise Your name forever and ever.
3 (E)Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised;
And His (F)greatness is unsearchable.
4 One (G)generation will praise Your works to another,
And will declare Your mighty acts.
5 On the (H)glorious [a]splendor of Your majesty
And (I)on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
6 People will speak of the [b]power of Your (J)awesome acts,
And I will (K)tell of Your greatness.
7 They will burst forth [c]in speaking of Your (L)abundant goodness,
And will (M)shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
8 The Lord is (N)gracious and compassionate;
Slow to anger and great in mercy.
9 The Lord is (O)good to all,
And His (P)mercies are over all His works.
10 (Q)All Your works will give thanks to You, Lord,
And Your (R)godly ones will bless You.
11 They will speak of the (S)glory of Your kingdom,
And talk of Your might,
12 To (T)make known to the sons of mankind [d]Your mighty acts,
And the (U)glory of the majesty of [e]Your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is [f]an (V)everlasting kingdom,
And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
[g]The Lord is faithful in His words,
And holy in all His works.
14 The Lord (W)supports all who fall,
And (X)raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all [h]look to You,
And You (Y)give them their food in due time.
16 You (Z)open Your hand
And satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is (AA)righteous in all His ways,
And kind in all His works.
18 The Lord is (AB)near to all who call on Him,
To all who call on Him (AC)in truth.
19 He will (AD)fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He will also (AE)hear their cry for help and save them.
20 The Lord (AF)watches over all who love Him,
But He will destroy all the (AG)wicked.
21 My (AH)mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
And (AI)all flesh will (AJ)bless His holy name forever and ever.
Overcoming the World
5 (A)Everyone who believes that Jesus is the [a]Christ has been (B)born of God, and everyone who loves the [b]Father (C)loves the child born of Him. 2 (D)By this we know that (E)we love the children of God, when we love God and [c]follow His commandments. 3 For (F)this is the love of God, that we (G)keep His commandments; and (H)His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For [d]whoever has been (I)born of God (J)overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who (K)believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the One who came (L)by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not [e]with the water only, but [f]with the water and [g]with the blood. It is (M)the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are (N)three that testify: 8 [h]the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are [i]in agreement. 9 (O)If we receive the testimony of people, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that (P)He has testified concerning His Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God (Q)has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has (R)made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us (S)eternal life, and (T)this life is in His Son. 12 (U)The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
