Psalm 26

This is a song that David wrote.

I do what is right

26 Lord, I always try to do what is right.
I continue to trust you all the time.
So please show that I am not guilty of wrong things.
Test me, Lord, and see how I have lived.
Look into my mind and see my thoughts.
I always know that I can trust you,
    because of your faithful love.
So I live to please you.
I do not become a friend of people who tell lies.
I do not join together with hypocrites.
I keep away from any crowd of evil people.
I do not become a friend of wicked people.

I wash my hands as a sign
    that I live in a pure way.[a]
I will worship you at your altar, Lord.
I will sing aloud to thank you.
I will tell people about all the great things that you have done.
Lord, I love the temple that is your house.
It is the place where we clearly see your glory.

Do not take away my life,
    as you do with sinners.
Do not punish me with death,
    as you do with murderers.
10 Those wicked people are always ready to do evil things.
They use bribes to get what they want.
11 But I always try to do what is right.
Please save me and be kind to me!
12 Now I stand in a safe place.
I will praise the Lord
when his people meet together to worship him.

Psalm 28

This is a song that David wrote.

God answers prayer

28 Lord, I am calling to you for help.
You are my safe place, like a high rock.[a]
Please do not refuse to listen to me.
If you do not answer me,
I will be like those who are going down
into the deep hole of death.
Hear me when I call to you for help.
    Please be kind to me.
I am lifting up my hands
    towards your Most Holy Place.[b]
Do not pull me away to punishment,
as you do with wicked people.
Those people do evil things.
They say kind words to their friends,
but really they want to hurt them.
Punish them for their sins.
Give back to them what they deserve!
Yes, punish them!
That is the fair thing to do.
They do not want to understand
the things that the Lord has done,
or the things that he has made.
The Lord will punish them,
and he will remove them for ever.
We should praise the Lord!
He has been kind to me,
when I called to him for help.
The Lord makes me strong.
He keeps me safe like a shield.
I trust in him completely,
    and he has helped me.
I am very happy,
and I will thank him with my songs.
The Lord makes his people strong.
He protects the king that he has chosen.
    The Lord keeps him safe.[c]
Lord, save your people!
Bless the people who belong to you!
Take care of your people like a shepherd.
Always carry them in your arms!

Psalm 36

The Lord's servant, David, wrote this song for the music leader.

A message from God

36 A wicked person turns against God completely.
    He does not respect God.
He is too proud to think about his sin,
so he does not hate it.
He speaks wicked things to deceive people.
He does nothing that is wise or good.
While he lies on his bed at night,
he thinks about bad things that he can do.
He lives only to do things that are not good.
He does not turn away from evil things.

Lord your faithful love reaches as high as the sky.
People can trust you beyond the clouds.
Your justice is like the strongest mountains.
You always do what is right,
more than the seas are deep.[a]
You take care of people and animals
    and you keep them safe.
God, your faithful love has great value!
You keep all humans safe,
like birds protect their babies under their wings.
You have plenty of food in your house,
to give them all that they need.
You give them water from your river,
that makes them happy when they drink it.
Yes, you are the one who gives us light and life.
10 Continue to love those who serve you as your people.
Let good, honest people receive your justice.
11 Do not let proud people hurt me.
Do not let evil people chase me away from home.
12 Now I see that those wicked people have fallen down!
They are lying there on the ground,
and they cannot get up again!

Psalm 39

David wrote this song for Jeduthun, the leader of the music.

Life is short[a]

39 I said, ‘I will be careful what I do,
so that I do not sin.
I will also be careful what I say.
When wicked people are listening,
I will not even open my mouth.’
So I did not speak a word,
    even about good things.
That made me very upset.
It was like a fire inside me!
As I thought more about it,
I just had to say something!
So I said this:
Lord, tell me about my life.
Tell me how long it will be,
    and when it will finish.
I need to remember that life is only short.
Yes, you have made the days of my life only a few!
The time that I live seems very short to you.
Human life is only a breath,
even for those who seem to be strong.
Selah.
As we live, we are just like shadows.
We work to get things for ourselves.
We may get a lot of money,
but we do not know who will have it after we die.’

So, my Lord, what help can I hope to get?
You are the only one that I can really trust!
Save me from all my sins!
Do not let fools insult me.
I will not say anything more.
I will not open my mouth,
because it is you who have punished me!
10 Please do not hurt me any more!
You have already punished me enough,
so that I am almost dead!
11 When people do wrong things,
you warn them and you punish them.
You destroy their valuable things,
    like a moth eats cloth![b]
Yes, our lives are only a breath!
Selah.
12 Lord, please hear my prayer.
Listen to me when I call to you for help.
Do not turn away from me when I weep.
I need your help,
like a foreign person who lives away from his home.
I live on earth as a stranger,
    like all my ancestors did.
13 Stop being angry with me,
so that I can be happy again before I die.

Exodus 19:1-16

The Israelites arrive at Sinai mountain

19 1-2 After the Israelites left Rephidim, they went into the Sinai desert. The Israelites put up their tents in the desert, at the side of Sinai mountain. That happened on the first day of the third month since they came out of Egypt.

Moses went up the mountain to speak with God. The Lord spoke to him from the mountain. He said, ‘This is what you must say to the Israelites, Jacob's descendants: “You yourselves have seen what I did against the Egyptians. You know how I took care of you. I carried you carefully, like an eagle carries her babies on her wings. I brought you here to come to me. Now you must be careful to obey me and my covenant with you. Then you will belong to me as my special people. The whole earth belongs to me, and I have chosen you from among all the nations. You will be my priests who serve in my kingdom. You will be a nation that is special to me.” These are the words that you must speak to the Israelites.’

So Moses came back down from the mountain. He brought together all the leaders of the Israelites. He told them all the words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all replied together. They said, ‘We will do everything that the Lord has said.’ Then Moses repeated their answer to the Lord.

The Lord said to Moses, ‘I will come to you in a thick cloud. Then the people will hear me when I speak to you. Then they will always believe what you say.’ Moses told the Lord the words that the people had said.

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people. Make them ready to meet with me. Today and tomorrow they must wash their clothes. 11 They must be ready on the third day. On that day, I will come down on Sinai mountain, so that all the people see me. 12 Make a line round the edge of the mountain so that the people do not cross it. Say to them, “Be careful! Do not go up the mountain or even touch the edge of it. If any people or animals touch the mountain, they must die. 13 Nobody must go near them. You must throw stones at them to kill them. Or you must shoot arrows at them. You must not let them live, whether they are people or animals.” The people must wait until they hear the sound of a trumpet. When they hear a long noise, then they may go up on the mountain.’

14 Then Moses came down from the mountain to speak to the people. He told them to make themselves ready for God. So the people washed their clothes. 15 Then Moses said to them, ‘Prepare yourselves for the third day. While you wait, do not have sex with your wives, or anyone.’

16 On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was there over the mountain. The people heard the noise of a loud trumpet. They were so afraid that their bodies were shaking.

Colossians 1:1-14

Paul and Timothy say ‘Hello’

This letter is from me, Paul. God chose me to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Our friend Timothy is here with me while I write.

We are writing to you, God's own people who live in Colossae. You are like brothers and sisters to us because you continue to believe in Christ.

I pray that God, our Father, will continue to help you. I pray that he will give you peace in your minds.

Paul thanks God for the believers

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. We thank God because people have told us good things about you. You continue to trust Christ Jesus. You also love all God's people. You live like that because you hope to receive good things from God.[a] You know that God has prepared those good things for you. He is keeping them safe in heaven. You learned that when people first told you God's true message, his good news.

You have heard this good news, like people all over the world have heard it. It has caused good results among you since the time when you heard it first. At that time, you understood the true message about how kind God really is. As a result, God is blessing you more and more, like he blesses his people everywhere. It was our good friend Epaphras who first told you this good news. Like us, he is Christ's servant. He serves Christ on our behalf. He has told us about the love that God's Spirit has given to you.

Paul prays that they will know God more and more

Because of all that, we have not stopped praying for you, ever since the day that we heard about you. We ask God that his Spirit will make you truly wise. He will help you to know clearly what he wants you to do. You will understand his true message. 10 Then you will be able to live in a way that the Lord wants you to live. Everything that you do will please him. We pray that all these good things will have good results. We pray that you will know God better and better. 11 God rules from heaven with great power. We pray that he will make you strong with every kind of strength. Then, when troubles come, you can still be patient and strong. 12 You will be able to thank God, our Father, and be happy. God has prepared good things for his people to receive in heaven. Because God has included you among his people, you will also share those good things in the kingdom of light. 13 God has saved us from the dark kingdom where Satan rules.[b] He has brought us into the kingdom of his Son, whom he loves. 14 God's Son, Jesus, paid the price for our sins and made us free. Yes, God has forgiven us.[c]

Matthew 3:7-12

Many Pharisees and Sadducees came to John.[a] They wanted John to baptize them. He said to them, ‘You are like dangerous snakes. God is angry. You are trying to run away from him. But he will soon punish people like you. You have to show that you are sorry. Change how you live. Stop doing things that God does not like. Do not say to yourselves, “We are in the family of Abraham. God will surely not punish us.” Listen! God can take these stones and make children for Abraham out of them! 10 You are like trees that have bad fruit. God has an axe ready to use. He will cut down every tree that does not make good fruit. He will throw those trees into the fire.

11 I baptize you with water. This shows that you want to change the way that you live. But another person will come soon.[b] He is greater than I am. I am not good enough even to carry his shoes for him. This other person will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 He is like a farmer that brings the wheat home from his field. He uses a special tool to throw the wheat up in the air. He does this to make the wheat seeds separate from what remains. Then he cleans his yard. He carefully stores all the seeds to keep them safe. But he burns everything else in a great fire that nobody can put out.’
