Psalm 119:1-24

The Word of God

ALEPH[a]

119 God has blessed people who always do what is right.
    They obey the Lord's Law.
They agree to live by his rules.[b]
They love to pray to him.
God has blessed people like that.
Also, they do nothing that is wrong.
They live in a way that please the Lord.
You, Lord, have told us to obey your teaching carefully.
I want to be able to obey your laws all the time.
When I remember all your commands,
    I will not be ashamed.
When I learn your good rules,
I will do what is right and I will thank you.
Yes, I will obey your laws.
Please do not turn away from me!

BETH

How can a young man live a clean life?
He must be careful to obey your message.
10 I bring all my thoughts to you.
Do not let me forget to obey your commands.
11 I always keep your message in my mind,
so that I do not do anything bad against you.
12 Lord, everyone should praise you!
    Please teach me your laws.
13 You have taught us your rules.
I want to speak them aloud for others to hear.
14 Your rules give me a happy life.
When I obey them, it is better than being rich!
15 I want to think carefully about your teaching.
You have shown me the best way to live.
16 Your laws make me very happy.
I will not forget what you have taught me.

GIMEL

17 Please be kind to me, your servant.
Then I will live and I will obey your message.
18 Open my eyes wide!
Then I will see great things in your Law.
19 I live like a stranger here on the earth.
Please do not hide your commands from me.
20 I really want to obey your rules all the time.
I want that more than anything else.
21 You warn people who are proud.
If they turn away from your commands,
    you will surely punish them.
22 I obey your rules.
So do not let people insult me,
    so that I become ashamed.
23 Rulers may think of ways to hurt me.
But I will think carefully about your rules.
24 Yes, your laws make me really happy.
They show me the right way to live.

Psalm 12-14

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

A prayer for help

12 Lord, please help me!
All the good people have gone away!
No kind or faithful people remain.
Everybody tells lies to one another.
When they say nice things,
they do it to deceive their friends.
Lord, please shut their mouths!
When they deceive people or they boast,
    stop them doing that!
They say:
‘Nobody can tell us what to do!
We will say what we like to get what we want!’
But the Lord says:
    ‘Now I will do something!
I know the cruel things that wicked people do to poor people.
When weak people cry with pain, I hear them.
So I will make them safe,
as they want me to do for them.’
The Lord's promises are true.
We can trust them,
    because they are pure.
They are as pure as silver
that people have put in a hot fire seven times.[a]
Yes Lord, you will take care of the poor people.
You will always keep each one of them safe
    from all those evil people.
But if people praise evil things,
then wicked people will boast more and more.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

A prayer for help[b]

13 Lord, will you forget about me for ever?
When will you remember to come and help me?
My thoughts make me worry all the time.
How long must I continue to be sad?
How long will my enemies continue to win against me?
Lord, please listen to me!
I feel that I am nearly dead.
Please give me the strength to live!
If I die, my enemies will say,
    ‘We have won against him!’
My enemies will be very happy if I fall.
But I will trust you because of your faithful love.
Please make me safe,
so that I can be happy and thank you.
Yes, I will sing to praise the Lord,
because he will surely help me.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God rules the world

14 Only fools say to themselves, ‘There is no God.’
People like that do bad and evil things.
None of them do things that are good and right.
The Lord is looking down from heaven.
He looks at the people of the world,
to see if there are any wise people among them.
He looks to see if anyone wants to know God.
But everyone has turned away from God.
    They have all become evil.
Not even one person does things that are right!
Will those evil people never learn?
They destroy my people,
as if they are eating a meal.
They never pray to the Lord.
Look at them! Now they are very afraid!
They see that God is with the people who obey him.
You wicked people tried to bring shame to poor people.
But the Lord keeps poor people safe.
The Lord is the one who can save Israel's people.
Please Lord, come now from your home in Zion!
When the Lord makes his people strong again,
    Jacob's descendants will be happy!
Yes, Israel's people will shout with joy![c]

Exodus 15:22-16:10

The waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led the Israelites away from the Red Sea. They travelled into the desert called Shur. They walked into the desert for three days and they could not find any water to drink. 23 Then they arrived at Marah. But they could not drink the water there because it was too bitter. That is why they called that place ‘Marah’.[a]

24 Then the people complained. They spoke against Moses. They said, ‘There is nothing for us to drink!’

25 Then Moses called to the Lord for help. The Lord showed Moses a special tree. Moses threw a branch into the water. Then the water became good for them to drink.

There at Marah, the Lord made a law for the Israelites to obey. He tested them there, to see if they would trust him. 26 He said, ‘Be careful to listen to what the Lord your God says to you. Let him see that you are doing things that are right. Obey his commands and his rules. Then I will not give to you the diseases that I gave to the Egyptians. I am the Lord. I am the one who gives you health.’

27 Then the Israelites arrived at Elim. There they found 12 wells of water and 70 palm trees. The Israelites put up their tents there, where there was water.

God sends special food

16 Then all the Israelites left Elim and they went into the desert called Sin. This is between Elim and Sinai. They arrived in the desert on the 15th day of the second month after they had left Egypt. When they were in the desert, all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, ‘It would have been better if the Lord had killed us in Egypt! There, we sat round pots with plenty of meat. We ate all the food that we wanted. But now you have brought us into this desert. We are so hungry that we will soon die!’

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will cause bread to fall down from the sky for you like rain. Each day, the people must go out and pick up enough bread for that day. In this way I will test them. I will discover whether they will obey my rules. On the sixth day, they must pick up and prepare twice as much bread.’

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, ‘In the evening, you will know who brought you out of Egypt. It was the Lord! Then, in the morning, you will see how great the Lord is. The Lord has heard the bad things that you have said against him. We, Moses and Aaron, are the Lord's servants. So you are complaining against him, not against us!’

Moses said to them, ‘The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening. And in the morning, he will give you all the bread that you want. He will do this because he has heard you when you complained against him. We are only his servants. You have said bad things against the Lord, not against us.’

Then Moses said to Aaron, ‘Say to all the Israelites, “The Lord has heard the bad things that you have said against him. Now come together, and stand in front of him.” ’ 10 While Aaron spoke, the Israelites looked towards the desert. They saw the bright glory of the Lord which appeared in the cloud.

1 Peter 2:1-10

So you must refuse to do any evil things. Do not tell lies to deceive people. Do not be hypocrites. Do not be jealous of other people. Do not say bad things against other people. Instead, you should want to learn about God more and more. New babies always want their mothers' milk, which makes them grow strong. God's true message is like good food that will make you strong in your spirits. Then you will continue to grow as believers so that God saves you. Do this, because you have already begun to know how kind the Lord is to you.

Jesus is like the most important stone in God's house

So come to the Lord Jesus. He is like a big stone that a builder uses to build a house. But he is alive. People decided that he was not important. So they refused him. But God had chosen him. To God, Jesus is very valuable. You yourselves are also like stones that are alive. God is using you, like stones, to build a house where his Spirit lives. You will serve him like his special priests who offer sacrifices to him. God will be happy with the spiritual offerings that you give to him, because you belong to Jesus Christ.[a]

In the Bible, God says this:

‘Look, I have chosen a stone that is very valuable.
I have chosen this stone as the most important stone,
for the corner of my house in Zion.[b]
Anyone who believes in him will never be disappointed.’[c]

This stone is very valuable to you who believe in Jesus. But the Bible says this about people who do not believe in him:

‘The builders refused to use a certain stone.
They thought that it had no value.
But now that stone has become the most important stone at the corner of the building.’[d]

The Bible also says this:

‘This stone will cause people to fall to the ground.
It is a rock that will make them fall down.’[e]

They fall down like that because they refuse to obey God's message. God already decided that this would happen to them.

But you are not like that. You are a special group of people that God has chosen. You serve God like priests who serve a King. You are his own holy people who belong to him. He has taken you out of the dark place of sin, and he has brought you into his great light. He has done all this so that you can tell people how great he is. 10 In past times, you were not people who knew God. But now you are God's people. In past times, God did not forgive you. But now he has been very kind to you and he has forgiven you.[f]

John 15:1-11

The branches must stay in the vine

15 Jesus said, ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.[a] Some branches that are part of me may have no fruit on them. My Father completely removes all those branches. But other branches do have fruit. My Father cuts all those branches to make them better. Then they will be good and make more fruit. The words that I have spoken to you have made you good already. Continue to live in me, and I will continue to live in you. A branch cannot make fruit by itself. It can make fruit only if it continues to be part of the vine. You are like that. You cannot make fruit unless you continue to live in me.[b]

I am the vine, and you are the branches. You must continue to live in me and I must continue to live in you. Only if you do that will you make plenty of fruit. That is because you can do nothing without me. If anyone does not remain in me, that person is like a dead branch. The gardener will throw that branch away and it will die. People throw all those dead branches into the fire so that they burn. You must remain in me, and my teaching must remain in you. Then you may ask for anything that you want. God will do it for you. If you make plenty of fruit, that will give honour to my Father. You will show that you are truly my disciples.

I have loved you in the same way that the Father has loved me. Continue to live in a way that shows my love. 10 If you obey what I have told you, you will be living in my love. In the same way, I have obeyed what my Father has told me to do. In that way, I live in his love. 11 I want you to be completely happy, in the same way that I myself am happy. That is why I have told you these things.
