Psalm 45

This is a special song that the sons of Korah wrote for the music leader. Sing it to the music that they call ‘Lilies.’

A love song[a]

45 This beautiful song makes my heart very happy.
I will sing this special poem to the king.
My voice is ready to sing it very well,
as well as a clever writer can write with a pen.

You are the most handsome man that there is.
You speak kind words in a beautiful way.
And so God will continue to bless you for ever.
Brave soldier, wear your sword at your side!
Show what a great king you are!
Wear your royal clothes
and ride out to win against your enemies!
Win the war on behalf of truth and justice!
Then your strong right hand will do powerful things!
Your sharp arrows will cut into the heart of your enemies.
Nations will fall down under your feet.
God, you will continue to rule as king
    always and for ever.
Your authority as king will bring justice to your people.
You love people to do what is right,
and you hate anything that is evil.
So God, your God, has chosen you
to be greater than all your people.
He has put special olive oil on you,
    to make you happy.
All your clothes have the beautiful smell
    of myrrh, aloes and cassia.
You hear the music of stringed instruments
    that comes from beautiful palaces.
That makes you happy.
The daughters of kings are among your visitors.
Your royal bride stands at your right hand.
She is wearing gold from Ophir.

10 Royal daughter, listen to me.
Listen carefully to what I am saying.
Forget your people and your family.
11 You are very beautiful
and the king will want to be with you.
He is your master, so respect him.
12 Rich people will come from Tyre to give gifts to you.
They will want you to help them.

13 The king's bride is in the palace,
    and she looks beautiful!
Her dress has gold threads in it.[b]
14 Now they lead her to the king in her beautiful clothes.
Her young friends follow after her
to bring her to the king.
15 They are very happy as they walk together
and they go into the king's palace.

16 You will have sons to become kings,
as your ancestors were kings before you.
You will make them princes
to rule over all the land.
17 In future years I will cause people to remember
that you are a great king!
Then people will praise you always and for ever.

Psalm 47-48

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

God rules the earth!

47 People from every nation,
    clap your hands together.
Shout aloud to God,
with the sound of happy songs.
The Lord, the Most High God, is wonderful.
He is the great King
who rules over the whole earth.
He has won the battle against our enemies,
and those nations are now under our power.
He chose a special land to belong to us.
Jacob's descendants are proud of that land.
They are his own people that he loves.
Selah.
God has gone up to sit on his throne,
    while the people shout aloud.
The Lord has gone up there,
while the trumpets make a loud noise.
Sing to praise God! Yes, sing!
Sing to praise our king! Sing!
God is the King who rules over the whole earth!
So sing a special song to praise him!
God rules over the nations.
God is sitting on his holy throne.
The leaders of the nations have met together.
They have joined with the people who serve Abraham's God.[a]
God has authority over all the world's rulers
    and their armies.
Everyone should praise him,
    for he is great!

This is a psalm that the sons of Korah wrote.

Zion is God's city

48 The Lord is great.
He deserves that people praise him
in the city of our God,
    on his holy mountain.
That place is high up and it is beautiful.
It brings joy to the whole world.
Mount Zion is the city of the great King.
It is where the true God lives.[b]
God is there in its strong places
and he keeps the city safe.
Look! There are kings of other nations
who join together to attack our city.
But when they come near and they see it,
    they are very surprised.
It frightens them so much
    that they quickly run away!
They cannot stop themselves shaking,
like a woman who is giving birth to a baby!
You push them away,
like an east wind that destroys great ships.
We had heard about the great things that God has done.
Now we have seen them for ourselves,
here in the city of the Lord Almighty,
    the city of our God.
It is God who keeps the city safe for ever!
Selah.
When we are in your temple, God,
we think about your faithful love.
10 You are famous all over the world,
so that people praise you as you deserve.
You are powerful
    and you rule with justice.
11 Because you judge people in a right way,
Mount Zion and all the towns of Judah will be happy.
12 Walk all round Zion and look at it.
    Count the towers.
13 Look at its strong buildings and its strong walls.
Then you will be able to describe it to your children.[c]
14 Yes, this is our God, who is with us for ever!
He will always be our guide.

Ezra 5

Tattenai writes to King Darius

Then the prophets Haggai and Iddo's grandson, Zechariah, spoke messages from God. They served Israel's God, and they spoke with his authority. They told God's message to the Jews who lived in Jerusalem and in other parts of Judea. Then Shealtiel's son, Zerubbabel, and Jozadak's son, Jeshua, started again to build God's temple in Jerusalem. God's prophets were there to help them.

At that time, Tattenai was the ruler who had authority over the region on the west side of the Euphrates river. He went with Shethar-Bozenai and their friends to ask the Jews what they were doing. They asked them, ‘Who gave you the authority to build this temple and make it ready to use again?’ They also asked, ‘What are the names of the men who are building this place?’

But God was watching over the Jewish leaders. Nobody was able to stop them building at that time. The city's officers had to wait until they could send a letter to King Darius. They waited for him to reply.

Tattenai, the city's ruler, Shethar-Bozenai and their friends who had authority in the region west of the Euphrates river wrote to King Darius. This is what they said:

King Darius, we hope that you are well.

We went to Judah to visit the temple of the great God. The king should know that the Jews are building it with big stones. They are putting wooden beams in its walls. They are working hard and very carefully. The building is growing fast.

We spoke to their leaders and we asked them, ‘Who gave you authority to build this temple and make it ready to use again?’ 10 We also asked them to tell us their names. Then we could tell you who the leaders are.

11 This is the answer that they gave to us:

‘We are servants of the God who rules heaven and earth. A great king of Israel built this temple and finished it many years ago. Now we are building it again. 12 Our ancestors made the God of heaven angry. So he let King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon have power over them. He destroyed this temple. Then he took our people as prisoners to Babylon.

13 But later, King Cyrus of Babylon commanded that we must build God's temple again. He said this in the first year that he was king. 14 He gave back to us the gold and silver things that belong in our God's temple. King Nebuchadnezzar had taken those things away from the temple in Jerusalem. He took them to Babylon and he put them in his own temple.

But King Cyrus gave our valuable things to Sheshbazzar. He had given authority to this man to rule over Judah. 15 He said to Sheshbazzar, “Take these things and put them safely in the temple in Jerusalem. Let the people build the house of God again, in the place where it used to be.” 16 So this man, Sheshbazzar, came here. He built the foundations of God's temple in Jerusalem. Since then we have continued to build it, but we have not finished it yet.’

17 If the king should choose, he may look in the books in Babylon's royal library. You should see whether King Cyrus did give a command about God's temple in Jerusalem. See if he said that the Jews should build it again. When you know what is true, you should decide what is right. Please tell us what we should do.

Revelation 4

God on his throne

After this, I looked. There in front of me was an open door in heaven. I heard the same voice that I had heard before. It spoke like the sound of a trumpet. It said to me, ‘Come up here. I will show you the things that must happen after this.’

Immediately God's Spirit caused me to see and to hear more things. I saw a throne in heaven, with someone sitting on it. The person who sat there shone with bright red and white light, like jewels called jasper and ruby. Around the throne there was a rainbow that shone with bright green light like an emerald jewel. All around the throne there were 24 other thrones. 24 leaders were sitting on these thrones. They were wearing white clothes and they had gold crowns on their heads. A storm with bright lightning came from the throne. There was the loud noise of thunder. In front of the throne there were seven lights of fire burning brightly. These lights are the seven spirits of God.[a] Also in front of the throne there was something like a sea of glass that shone with light.

In the middle, round the throne, there were four other beings that were alive. They had eyes all over them, on their fronts and on their backs. The first of these beings was like a lion. The second being was like an ox. The third being had a face like a man's face. And the fourth being was like an eagle that was flying. Each of these four beings had six wings. They had eyes all over them, even under their wings. All day and all night they never stop saying:

‘The Lord God has all power and authority.
He has no bad thing in him. He is completely good.
He has always been alive. He is alive now.
He will continue to be alive for ever.’

God sits on the throne and he is alive for ever. The four beings that are alive worship him and they thank him. 10 When they do this, the 24 leaders bend down to the ground. They also worship the Lord God, who sits on the throne and is alive for ever. They put their crowns in front of God's throne, and they praise him. They say:

11 ‘God, our Lord, you are very good!
Everyone should give you honour and say how great and powerful you are!
Everyone should worship you, because you created everything.
You decided to make them and so you made them!
That is why everything in the world is here.’

Matthew 13:1-9

Jesus tells a story about a farmer who planted seeds

13 On that same day, Jesus left the house and he went to Lake Galilee. He sat down near the edge of the lake to teach people. The crowd that came to listen to him was very large. So he went and sat in a boat that was on the water. The big crowd of people stood on the shore. Jesus used stories to teach them many things. He said to them: ‘Listen to me! A farmer went out to plant seeds in his field. While he was throwing the seeds, some of them fell on the path. The birds came and they ate those seeds. Other seeds fell on ground which had rocks. There was not much soil in that place. The seeds quickly began to grow, because the soil was not deep. But when the sun rose, it burned the young plants. They soon died because they had not grown down well into the soil. Some other seeds fell among thorn bushes. Those bushes grew up with the young plants. They stopped the seeds from growing into strong plants. But some seeds fell on good soil and strong plants grew from those seeds. Some plants made 100 new seeds. Some plants made 60 new seeds and some plants made 30 new seeds.’ Then Jesus said to the crowd, ‘You have ears, so listen well to what I say!’
