Psalm 148-150

The 3rd Hallelujah Psalm[a]

148 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the sky above!
Praise him high in the heavens.
Praise him, all his angels.
Praise him all his armies in heaven.
Praise him, sun and moon.
Praise him, all bright stars.
Praise him, skies above,
and the water above the sky.
They should all praise the name of the Lord.
It was his command that created them.
He has fixed them in their places for all time.
Nothing can change the command that he has given.

Praise the Lord from the earth!
Praise him, sea monsters and all the deep seas.
Praise him, fire and hail, snow and clouds.
Praise him, wind and storm, as you obey his commands.
Praise him, mountains and all hills.
Praise him fruit trees and all trees in the forests.
10 Praise him, wild animals and farm animals.
Praise him, snakes and birds.
11 Praise him, kings all over the world,
    and people of every nation.
Praise him, princes and all rulers on earth.
12 Praise him, young men and young women.
Praise him, old men, as well as children.
13 They should all praise the name of the Lord.
Only the Lord's name is great above all other names.
He is the king who rules over heaven and earth.
14 He has made his own people strong,
so that other nations respect them.
All the people who serve him should praise him.
They are the Israelite nation, who belong to him.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

The 4th Hallelujah Psalm

149 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Sing a new song to worship the Lord.
When his own people meet together,
    they should praise him.
People of Israel, be very happy,
    because God made you.
People of Zion, be very happy,
    because God is your king.
Yes, dance to praise the name of the Lord.
Take your harps and tambourines
and make music to praise him with your songs.
When the Lord's people serve him,
    it makes him happy.
He is happy to help humble people,
    so that people respect them.
The people who belong to God should be very happy,
because he has made them great.
They should always sing with joy,
even when they lie on their beds at night.
They should shout aloud to praise God,
while they hold sharp swords in their hands.
That is how they must fight against other nations,
to punish them for their sins.
They must tie up the foreign kings with chains,
and put the rulers in prison.
They must do that to punish their enemies
in the way that is right.
That is how God will cause his people to become great.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

The 5th Hallelujah Psalm[b]

150 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his temple.
Praise him high in the sky,
where he shows his great strength.
Praise God for the great things that he has done.
Praise him because he is great and powerful.
Praise him with music!
Yes! Use trumpets, harps and lyres
    to praise God![c]
Dance and hit drums to praise him!
Make music with harps and flutes
    to praise him!
Make music with big cymbals and small cymbals
    to praise him!
Everything that is alive should praise the Lord.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 114-115

Hallelujah, God does great things[a]

114 God led Israel's people out of Egypt.
Jacob's descendants left that foreign land.
Then Judah became God's special place for his people.
There he ruled over Israel's people.
The sea looked and ran away!
Then the Jordan River turned back![b]
The mountains shook,
    like sheep that are jumping.
The hills jumped like lambs.[c]
Tell me, sea, why did you run away?
Tell me, Jordan River, why did you turn back?
And you mountains and hills,
why did you jump like sheep?
Earth, you should shake with fear!
The Lord, Jacob's God, has come to you,
    so be afraid!
He changes a rock into a pool of water!
Water pours out of a hard rock![d]

There is only one true God[e]

115 Lord, you are the one
who deserves that people praise you.
They should praise only you, not us!
Because you love us with a faithful love,
and you always do what you have promised.
Why should other nations say about us,
    ‘Where is their God?’
We know that our God is in heaven.
He does whatever he wants to do.
Those people's idols are made from silver and gold.
    Yes, human hands make them!
Each idol has a mouth,
    but it cannot speak!
It has eyes, but it cannot see!
It has ears, but it cannot hear!
It has a nose, but it cannot smell!
It has hands, but it cannot feel anything!
It has feet, but it cannot walk!
They cannot make a sound!
The people that make those idols
    will become useless like them.
The same is true for everyone
who trusts their idols to help them.
People of Israel,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
10 Aaron's family,
    trust in the Lord.[f]
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
11 Everyone who serves the Lord,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
12 The Lord will remember us,
    and he will bless us.
He will bless Israel's people.
He will bless Aaron's family.
13 He will bless everybody who serves him,
whether they are important people or not.
14 I pray that the Lord will give you many children,
    and your children too!
15 I pray that the Lord will bless you all.
He is the one who made the whole universe.
16 The heavens belong to the Lord,
but he has given the earth to us people.
17 Dead people cannot praise the Lord.
In their graves, they are unable to speak.
18 But we will praise the Lord,
    now and for ever.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Jeremiah 29:1

Jeremiah's letter

29 Jeremiah sent a letter from Jerusalem to the people of Judah who were in Babylon. He sent it to the Israelite leaders and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people who were there. Nebuchadnezzar had taken them there as prisoners from Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 29:4-14

The Lord Almighty, Israel's God, sends this message to all the people of Judah who are in Babylon. He sent them there from Jerusalem as prisoners. He says, ‘Build houses for yourselves. Make Babylon your home. Plant gardens. Eat the food that grows in them. Marry, so that you have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons to marry. Let your daughters marry too. Then they also can give birth to sons and daughters. Your descendants should become more and more, not fewer. Work well to help the foreign place where I have sent you to live. Try to make it a successful place. Pray to the Lord that it will do well. If it does well, you will also do well.’

Yes, the Lord Almighty, Israel's God, says, ‘Some of the prophets and the other people use magic to tell you what will happen in the future. Do not let them deceive you with their lies. Do not listen to the dreams that they tell you about. They say that they are speaking with my authority. But the things that they prophesy are lies. I have not sent them to speak to you.’ That is what the Lord says.

10 The Lord says, ‘You will live in Babylon for 70 years. Then I will choose to help you. I will be kind to you, as I promised. I will bring you back here to your home. 11 I, the Lord, tell you this: I have decided what I will do for you. I have plans to help you to do well. I do not want to hurt you. I want to give you hope for a good life in the future. 12 At that time, when you call out to me for help, I will hear your prayers. 13 You will want to find me, and I will be ready to meet with you. If you really want to find me, 14 I will be there for you.’ That is what the Lord says. ‘I will bring you back from the nations and all the places where I sent you as prisoners. You will no longer have to live in those foreign places.’[a]

Acts 16:6-15

Paul has a vision

Paul and his friends wanted to go to the region of Asia to speak God's message. But the Holy Spirit stopped them from doing this. So they travelled through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia. Then they arrived at the edge of the region of Mysia. They wanted to go from there into the region of Bithynia. But the Holy Spirit of Jesus stopped them from going there too. So they went quickly through Mysia and they arrived at the city of Troas, on the coast.

During that night, Paul had a vision. In the vision, he saw a man from the region called Macedonia. The man stood there and he said to Paul, ‘Please, please come across the sea to Macedonia and help us.’ 10 After Paul's vision, we immediately prepared ourselves for the journey to Macedonia.[a] We decided that God was telling us to go there. He wanted us to tell the people there the good news about Jesus.

Lydia becomes a believer

11 We got in a ship at Troas and we sailed across the sea. We went across to an island called Samothrace. The next day, we continued our journey to a port called Neapolis. 12 We then travelled across the land to Philippi, the most important city in the region of Macedonia. The Romans ruled Philippi and many Roman people lived there. We stayed there for a few days.

13 On the Jewish day of rest, we went out of the city gate. We went down to the edge of the river. We thought that the Jews might have a special meeting place there. We thought that they would meet there to pray. We found a group of women who were meeting there. So we sat down and we talked to them.[b]

14 One of the women who listened to us was called Lydia. She was from the city of Thyatira. She bought and sold expensive dark red cloth. She was a Gentile woman who now worshipped God. The Lord helped her to understand Paul's message. So she believed the things that he said.

15 Then Paul and Silas baptized Lydia and the other people who lived in her house. After this, Lydia asked us to go to her house. She said to us, ‘If you think that I really believe in the Lord Jesus, then please stay in my house.’ We agreed to go and to stay there.

Luke 10:1-12

Jesus sends out 72 disciples

10 After this, Jesus chose another 72 disciples. He sent them out two by two, to every town and village that he would visit soon. Before they went, he said to them, ‘Many people are ready to believe God's message. They are like crops in a field at harvest time. But there are very few workers to bring in the crops. So pray to God to send out workers. The field and the plants belong to him.’[a]

Jesus then said, ‘I am sending you out, so go! But listen! You will be like young sheep among wild animals. Do not carry a purse or a bag. Do not take extra shoes. When you meet other people on the road, do not stop to say “hello”.[b]

In each town, when you go into a house, first say to the people who live there, “We pray that all will be well with you!” Someone in the house may accept what you say. If they do, God will bless them. But if nobody accepts your kind words, God will bless you instead of them. Stay in the same house there until you leave that town. Accept the food and drink that the people in the house give to you. You are working to help them. So they should give you what you need to live. Do not visit different houses to get food. The people may accept you well when you go into a town. Then eat the food that those people give to you. Make the sick people well who are there. Give this message to all the people there: “The kingdom of God has now come near to you.” 10 Sometimes when you go into a town, the people will not accept you. You should then go into the streets of that town and you should say to the people, 11 “There is dirt from your town on our feet. We will clean it off to show that you have not accepted us. God is not happy with you. But listen! You should know that the kingdom of God has come very near.” 12 One day God will punish the people from that town. Yes, he will punish them more than the people who lived in Sodom long ago.’[c]

Luke 10:17-20

The 72 disciples return

17 Later, the 72 disciples that Jesus had sent out returned to him. They were very happy. ‘Master,’ they said, ‘even bad spirits obey us. When we use your name, they do what we say.’

18 Jesus replied, ‘I saw the Devil himself fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Listen! I have given power to you. You will even stand on dangerous snakes and insects and you will have authority over all the power of the Devil. Nothing will hurt you. 20 But do not be happy because you have authority over bad spirits. God has written your names in his book in heaven. That is why you should be happy.’
