Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 93[a]
93 The Lord reigns.
He is robed in majesty.
The Lord is robed;
he wears strength around his waist.[b]
Indeed, the world is established; it cannot be moved.
2 Your throne has been secure from ancient times;
you have always been king.[c]
3 The waves[d] roar, O Lord,
the waves roar,
the waves roar and crash.[e]
4 Above the sound of the surging water,[f]
and the mighty waves of the sea,
the Lord sits enthroned in majesty.[g]
5 The rules you set down[h] are completely reliable.[i]
Holiness[j] aptly adorns your house, O Lord, forever.[k]
Psalm 98[a]
A psalm.
98 Sing to the Lord a new song,[b]
for he performs[c] amazing deeds.
His right hand and his mighty arm
accomplish deliverance.[d]
2 The Lord demonstrates his power to deliver;[e]
in the sight of the nations he reveals his justice.
3 He remains loyal and faithful to the family of Israel.[f]
All the ends of the earth see our God deliver us.[g]
4 Shout out praises to the Lord, all the earth.
Break out in a joyful shout and sing!
5 Sing to the Lord accompanied by a harp,
accompanied by a harp and the sound of music.
6 With trumpets and the blaring of the ram’s horn,
shout out praises before the king, the Lord.
7 Let the sea and everything in it shout,
along with the world and those who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands!
Let the mountains sing in unison
9 before the Lord.
For he comes to judge the earth.
He judges the world fairly,[h]
and the nations in a just manner.
Psalm 66[a]
For the music director, a song, a psalm.
66 Shout out praise to God, all the earth!
2 Sing praises about the majesty of his reputation.[b]
Give him the honor he deserves![c]
3 Say to God:
“How awesome are your deeds!
Because of your great power your enemies cower in fear[d] before you.
4 All the earth worships[e] you
and sings praises to you.
They sing praises to your name.” (Selah)
5 Come and witness[f] God’s exploits![g]
His acts on behalf of people are awesome.[h]
6 He turned the sea into dry land;[i]
they passed through the river on foot.[j]
Let us rejoice in him there.[k]
7 He rules[l] by his power forever;
he watches[m] the nations.
Stubborn rebels should not exalt[n] themselves. (Selah)
8 Praise[o] our God, you nations.
Loudly proclaim his praise.[p]
9 He preserves our lives[q]
and does not allow our feet to slip.
10 For[r] you, O God, tested us;
you purified us like refined silver.
11 You led us into a trap;[s]
you caused us to suffer.[t]
12 You allowed men to ride over our heads;
we passed through fire and water,
but you brought us out into a wide open place.[u]
13 I will enter[v] your temple with burnt sacrifices;
I will fulfill the vows I made to you,
14 which my lips uttered
and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer up to you fattened animals as burnt sacrifices,
along with the smell of sacrificial rams.
I will offer cattle and goats. (Selah)
16 Come! Listen, all you who are loyal to God.[w]
I will declare what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him for help[x]
and praised him with my tongue.[y]
18 If I had harbored sin in my heart,[z]
the Lord would not have listened.
19 However, God heard;
he listened to my prayer.
20 God deserves praise,[aa]
for[ab] he did not reject my prayer
or abandon his love for me.[ac]
2 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish 2 and said,
“I[a] called out to the Lord from my distress,
and he answered me;[b]
from the belly of Sheol[c] I cried out for help,
and you heard my prayer.[d]
3 You threw me[e] into the deep waters,[f]
into the middle[g] of the sea;[h]
the ocean current[i] engulfed[j] me;
all the mighty waves[k] you sent[l] swept[m] over me.[n]
4 I thought[o] I had been banished from your sight[p]
and that I would never again[q] see your holy temple.[r]
5 Water engulfed me up to my neck;[s]
the deep ocean[t] surrounded me;
seaweed[u] was wrapped around my head.
6 I went down[v] to the very bottoms[w] of the mountains;[x]
the gates[y] of the netherworld[z] barred me in[aa] forever,[ab]
but you brought me[ac] up from the Pit,[ad] O Lord, my God.
7 When my life[ae] was ebbing away,[af] I called out to[ag] the Lord.
And my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.[ah]
8 Those who worship[ai] worthless idols[aj] forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.[ak]
9 But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration[al] of praise;[am]
I will surely do[an] what I have promised.[ao]
Salvation[ap] belongs to the Lord!”[aq]
22 “Men of Israel,[a] listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,[b] wonders, and miraculous signs[c] that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know— 23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed[d] by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.[e] 24 But God raised him up,[f] having released[g] him from the pains[h] of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.[i] 25 For David says about him,
‘I saw the Lord always in front of me,[j]
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my body[k] also will live in hope,
27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,[l]
nor permit your Holy One to experience[m] decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’[n]
29 “Brothers,[o] I can speak confidently[p] to you about our forefather[q] David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 So then, because[r] he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants[s] on his throne,[t] 31 David by foreseeing this[u] spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,[v] that he was neither abandoned to Hades,[w] nor did his body[x] experience[y] decay.[z] 32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.[aa]
Jesus’ Parting Words to His Disciples
14 “Do not let your hearts be distressed.[a] You believe in God;[b] believe also in me. 2 There are many dwelling places[c] in my Father’s house.[d] Otherwise, I would have told you, because[e] I am going away to make ready[f] a place for you.[g] 3 And if I go and make ready[h] a place for you, I will come again and take you[i] to be with me,[j] so that where I am you may be too. 4 And you know the way where I am going.”[k]
5 Thomas said,[l] “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus replied,[m] “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.[n] No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you have known me, you will know my Father too.[o] And from now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said,[p] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.”[q] 9 Jesus replied,[r] “Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known[s] me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?[t] The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative,[u] but the Father residing in me performs[v] his miraculous deeds.[w] 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me,[x] believe because of the miraculous deeds[y] themselves. 12 I tell you the solemn truth,[z] the person who believes in me will perform[aa] the miraculous deeds[ab] that I am doing,[ac] and will perform[ad] greater deeds[ae] than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name,[af] so that the Father may be glorified[ag] in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
