Psalm 95
Worship and Warning
1 Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord,
shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation!(A)
2 Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving;
let us shout triumphantly to Him in song.(B)
3 For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.(C)
4 The depths of the earth are in His hand,
and the mountain peaks are His.(D)
5 The sea is His; He made it.
His hands formed the dry land.(E)
6 Come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.(F)
7 For He is our God,
and we are the people of His pasture,
the sheep under His care.[a](G)
Today, if you hear His voice:(H)
8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah in the wilderness(I)
9 where your fathers tested Me;
they tried Me, though they had seen what I did.(J)
10 For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation;
I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray;
they do not know My ways.”(K)
11 So I swore in My anger,
“They will not enter My rest.”(L)
Psalm 88
A Cry of Desperation
A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.(A)
1 Lord, God of my salvation,
I cry out before You day and night.(B)
2 May my prayer reach Your presence;
listen to my cry.(C)
3 For I have had enough troubles,
and my life is near Sheol.(D)
4 I am counted among those going down to the Pit.(E)
I am like a man without strength,(F)
5 abandoned[a] among the dead.
I am like the slain lying in the grave,(G)
whom You no longer remember,
and who are cut off from Your care.[b](H)
6 You have put me in the lowest part of the Pit,
in the darkest places, in the depths.(I)
7 Your wrath weighs heavily on me;(J)
You have overwhelmed me with all Your waves.(K)
8 You have distanced my friends from me;
You have made me repulsive to them.(L)
I am shut in and cannot go out.
9 My eyes are worn out from crying.(M)
Lord, I cry out to You all day long;(N)
I spread out my hands to You.(O)
10 Do You work wonders for the dead?
Do departed spirits rise up to praise You?(P)
11 Will Your faithful love be declared in the grave,
Your faithfulness in Abaddon?(Q)
12 Will Your wonders be known in the darkness
or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion?(R)
13 But I call to You for help, Lord;
in the morning my prayer meets You.(S)
14 Lord, why do You reject me?(T)
Why do You hide Your face from me?(U)
15 From my youth,
I have been afflicted and near death.
I suffer Your horrors; I am desperate.(V)
16 Your wrath sweeps over me;
Your terrors destroy me.(W)
17 They surround me like water all day long;
they close in on me from every side.(X)
18 You have distanced loved one and neighbor from me;
darkness is my only friend.[c](Y)
Psalm 91
The Protection of the Most High
1 The one who lives under the protection of the Most High
dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.(A)
3 He Himself will deliver you from the hunter’s net,(C)
from the destructive plague.
4 He will cover you with His feathers;
you will take refuge under His wings.(D)
His faithfulness will be a protective shield.(E)
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
the arrow that flies by day,(F)
6 the plague that stalks in darkness,
or the pestilence that ravages at noon.(G)
7 Though a thousand fall at your side
and ten thousand at your right hand,
the pestilence will not reach you.(H)
8 You will only see it with your eyes
and witness the punishment of the wicked.(I)
9 Because you have made the Lord—my refuge,(J)
the Most High—your dwelling place,(K)
10 no harm will come to you;
no plague will come near your tent.(L)
11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you,
to protect you in all your ways.(M)
12 They will support you with their hands
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.(N)
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the young lion and the serpent.(O)
14 Because he is lovingly devoted to Me,
I will deliver him;
I will protect him because he knows My name.(P)
15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble.
I will rescue him and give him honor.(Q)
16 I will satisfy him with a long life(R)
and show him My salvation.(S)
Psalm 92
God’s Love and Faithfulness
A psalm. A song for the Sabbath day.
1 It is good to praise Yahweh,
to sing praise to Your name, Most High,(T)
2 to declare Your faithful love in the morning
and Your faithfulness at night,(U)
3 with a ten-stringed harp
and the music of a lyre.(V)
4 For You have made me rejoice, Lord,
by what You have done;
I will shout for joy
because of the works of Your hands.(W)
5 How magnificent are Your works, Lord,
how profound Your thoughts!(X)
6 A stupid person does not know,
a fool does not understand this:(Y)
7 though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be eternally destroyed.(Z)
8 But You, Lord, are exalted forever.(AA)
9 For indeed, Lord, Your enemies—
indeed, Your enemies will perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.(AB)
10 You have lifted up my horn(AC)
like that of a wild ox;
I have been anointed[b] with oil.(AD)
11 My eyes look down on my enemies;
my ears hear evildoers when they attack me.(AE)
12 The righteous thrive like a palm tree
and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.(AF)
13 Planted in the house of the Lord,
they thrive in the courts of our God.(AG)
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
healthy and green,(AH)
15 to declare: “The Lord is just;
He is my rock,
and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”(AI)
Reminder of the Covenant
11 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Listen to the words of this covenant(A) and tell them to the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem. 3 You must tell them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let a curse be on the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,(B) 4 which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt,(C) out of the iron furnace.’(D) I declared: ‘Obey Me, and do everything that I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God,’(E) 5 in order to establish the oath I swore to your ancestors,(F) to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.”
I answered, “Amen, Lord.”(G)
6 The Lord said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Obey the words of this covenant and carry them out. 7 For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again,[a](H) ‘Obey My voice.’ 8 Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart.(I) So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”
14 “As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf,(A) for I will not be listening when they call out to Me at the time of their disaster.
15 What right does My beloved have
to be in My house,(B)
having carried out so many evil schemes?
Can holy meat[a](C) prevent your disaster[b]
so you can rejoice?
16 The Lord named you
a flourishing olive tree,(D)
beautiful with well-formed fruit.
He has set fire to it,
and its branches are consumed[c](E)
with a great roaring sound.(F)
17 “The Lord of Hosts who planted you(G) has decreed disaster against you, because of the harm the house of Israel and the house of Judah brought on themselves, provoking Me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”
18 The Lord informed me, so I knew.
Then You helped me to see their deeds,
19 for I was like a docile[d] lamb led to slaughter.(H)
I didn’t know that they had devised plots against me:
“Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit;[e]
let’s cut him off from the land of the living(I)
so that his name will no longer be remembered.”
20 But, Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,
who tests(J) heart[f] and mind,(K)
let me see Your vengeance on them,
for I have presented my case to You.(L)
The New Life in Christ
6 What should we say then?(A) Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?(B) 2 Absolutely not!(C) How can we who died to sin(D) still live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized(E) into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?(F) 4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death,(G) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(H) by the glory of the Father,(I) so we too may walk in a new way[a] of life.(J) 5 For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death,(K) we will certainly also be[b] in the likeness of His resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self[c](L) was crucified with Him(M) in order that sin’s dominion over the body[d] may be abolished,(N) so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died(O) is freed[e] from sin’s claims.[f] 8 Now if we died with Christ,(P) we believe that we will also live with Him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead,(Q) will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him.(R) 10 For in light of the fact that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God. 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin(S) but alive to God in Christ Jesus.[g]
33 “We are descendants[a] of Abraham,”(A) they answered Him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus responded, “I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.(B) 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever,(C) but a son does remain forever.(D) 36 Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know you are descendants[b] of Abraham,(E) but you are trying to kill Me because My word[c] is not welcome among you. 38 I speak what I have seen(F) in the presence of the Father;[d](G) therefore, you do what you have heard from your father.”
39 “Our father is Abraham!” they replied.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.(H) 40 But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth(I) that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this! 41 You’re doing what your father does.”(J)
“We weren’t born(K) of sexual immorality,”(L) they said. “We have one Father—God.”(M)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me,(N) because I came from God(O) and I am here. For I didn’t come on My own, but He sent Me. 43 Why don’t you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to[e] My word.(P) 44 You are of your father the Devil,(Q) and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer(R) from the beginning(S) and has not stood in the truth,(T) because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,[f] because he is a liar and the father of liars.[g] 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Who among you can convict Me of sin?(U) If I tell the truth, why don’t you believe Me? 47 The one who is from God listens to God’s words. This is why you don’t listen, because you are not from God.”
