Psalm 72

Psalm 72

By Solomon.

O Elohim, give the king your justice
and the king’s son[a] your righteousness
so that he may judge your people with righteousness
and your oppressed people with justice.

May the mountains bring peace to the people
    and the hills bring righteousness.
May he grant justice to the people who are oppressed.
May he save the children of needy people
    and crush their oppressor.
May they fear you as long as the sun and moon shine—
    throughout every generation.
May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass,
like showers that water the land.
May righteous people blossom in his day.
May there be unlimited peace until the moon no longer shines.

May he rule from sea to sea,
from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
May the people of the desert kneel in front of him.
May his enemies lick the dust.
10 May the kings from Tarshish and the islands bring presents.
May the kings from Sheba and Seba bring gifts.
11 May all kings worship him.
    May all nations serve him.

12 He will rescue the needy person who cries for help
and the oppressed person who has no one’s help.
13 He will have pity on the poor and needy
and will save the lives of the needy.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence.
Their blood will be precious in his sight.

15 May he live long.
May the gold from Sheba be given to him.
May the people pray for him continually.
May they praise him all day long.
16 May there be plenty of grain in the land.
May it wave in the breeze on the mountaintops,
its fruit like the treetops of Lebanon.
May those from the city flourish like the grass on the ground.
17 May his name endure forever.
May his name continue as long as the sun shines.
May all nations be blessed through him and call him blessed.

18 Thank Yahweh Elohim, the Elohim of Israel,
    who alone does miracles.
19 Thanks be to his glorious name forever.
May the whole earth be filled with his glory.
    Amen and amen!

20 The prayers by David, son of Jesse, end here.

1 Samuel 1:1-20

Samuel’s Birth

There was a man named Elkanah from Ramathaim Zophim in the mountains of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, grandson of Elihu, great-grandson of Tohu, whose father was Zuph from the tribe of Ephraim. Elkanah had two wives, one named Hannah, the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. Every year this man would go from his own city to worship and sacrifice to Yahweh Tsebaoth at Shiloh. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served there as priests of Yahweh.

Whenever Elkanah offered a sacrifice, he would give portions of it to his wife Peninnah and all her sons and daughters. He would also give one portion to Hannah because he loved her, even though Yahweh had kept her from having children. Because Yahweh had made her unable to have children, her rival Peninnah tormented her endlessly in order to make her miserable. This happened year after year. Whenever Hannah went to Yahweh’s house, Peninnah would make her miserable, and Hannah would cry and not eat. Her husband Elkanah would ask her, “Hannah, why are you crying? Why haven’t you eaten? Why are you so downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”

One day, after Hannah had something to eat and drink in Shiloh, she got up. (The priest Eli was sitting on a chair by the door of Yahweh’s temple.) 10 Though she was resentful, she prayed to Yahweh while she cried. 11 She made this vow, “Yahweh Tsebaoth, if you will look at my misery, remember me, and give me a boy, then I will give him to you for as long as he lives. A razor will never be used on his head.” 12 While Hannah was praying a long time in front of Yahweh, Eli was watching her mouth. 13 She was praying silently. Her voice couldn’t be heard; only her lips were moving. Eli thought she was drunk.

14 “How long are you going to stay drunk?” Eli asked her. “Get rid of your wine.”

15 Hannah responded, “No sir. I’m not drunk. I’m depressed. I’m pouring out my heart to Yahweh. 16 Don’t take me to be a good-for-nothing woman. I was praying like this because I’ve been troubled and tormented.”

17 Eli replied, “Go in peace, and may the Elohim of Israel grant your request.”

18 “May you continue to be kind to me,” she said. Then the woman went her way and ate. She was no longer sad.[a]

19 Early in the morning Elkanah and his family got up and worshiped in front of Yahweh. Then they returned home to Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and Yahweh remembered her. 20 Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel [God Hears], because she said, “I asked Yahweh for him.”

Hebrews 3:1-6

Christ Is Superior to Moses

Brothers and sisters, you are holy partners in a heavenly calling. So look carefully at Yeshua, the apostle and chief priest about whom we make our declaration of faith. Yeshua is faithful to God, who appointed him, in the same way that Moses was faithful when he served in God’s house. Yeshua deserves more praise than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house is praised more than the house. After all, every house has a builder, but the builder of everything is God.

Moses was a faithful servant in God’s household. He told the people what God would say in the future. But Christ is a faithful son in charge of God’s household. We are his household if we continue to have courage and to be proud of the confidence we have.

Psalm 146-147

Psalm 146

Hallelujah!

Praise Yahweh, my soul!
I want to praise Yahweh throughout my life.
I want to make music to praise my Elohim as long as I live.

Do not trust influential people,
    mortals who cannot help you.
When they breathe their last breath, they return to the ground.
On that day their plans come to an end.
Blessed are those who receive help from the El of Jacob.
Their hope rests on Yahweh their Elohim,
        who made heaven, earth,
the sea, and everything in them.
    Yahweh remains faithful forever.
He brings about justice for those who are oppressed.
He gives food to those who are hungry.
    Yahweh sets prisoners free.
Yahweh gives sight to blind people.
Yahweh straightens the backs of those who are bent over.
    Yahweh loves righteous people.
Yahweh protects foreigners.
Yahweh gives relief to orphans and widows.
But he keeps wicked people from reaching their goal.
10 Yahweh rules as king forever.
Zion, your Elohim rules throughout every generation.

Hallelujah!

Psalm 147

Hallelujah!

It is good to sing psalms to our Elohim.
It is pleasant to sing his praise beautifully.

Yahweh is the builder of Jerusalem.
He is the one who gathers the outcasts of Israel together.
He is the Rophe of the brokenhearted.
He is the one who bandages their wounds.
He determines the number of stars.
He gives each one a name.
Our Adonay is great, and his power is great.
There is no limit to his understanding.
Yahweh gives relief to those who are oppressed.
He brings wicked people down to the ground.

Sing to Yahweh a song of thanksgiving.
Make music to our Elohim with a lyre.
He covers the sky with clouds.
He provides rain for the ground.
He makes grass grow on the mountains.
He is the one who gives food to animals
and to young ravens when they call out.
10 He finds no joy in strong horses,
nor is he pleased by brave soldiers.
11 Yahweh is pleased with those who fear him,
with those who wait with hope for his mercy.

12 Praise Yahweh, Jerusalem!
    Praise your Elohim, Zion!
13 He makes the bars across your gates strong.
He blesses the children within you.
14 He is the one who brings peace to your borders
and satisfies your hunger with the finest wheat.
15 He is the one who sends his promise throughout the earth.
His word travels with great speed.
16 He is the one who sends snow like wool
    and scatters frost like ashes.
17 He is the one who throws his hailstones like breadcrumbs.
Who can withstand his chilling blast?
18 He sends out his word and melts his hailstones.
He makes wind blow and water flow.
19 He speaks his word to Jacob,
his laws and judicial decisions to Israel.
20 He has done nothing like this for any other nation.
The other nations do not know the decisions he has handed down.

Hallelujah!

John 3:25-30

25 Some of John’s disciples had an argument with a Jew about purification ceremonies. 26 So they went to John and asked him, “Rabbi, do you remember the man you spoke so favorably about when he was with you on the other side of the Jordan River? Well, he’s baptizing, and everyone is going to him!”

27 John answered, “People can’t receive anything unless it has been given to them from heaven. 28 You are witnesses that I said, ‘I’m not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’

29 “The groom is the person to whom the bride belongs. The best man, who stands and listens to him, is overjoyed when the groom speaks. This is the joy that I feel. 30 He must increase in importance, while I must decrease in importance.
