Book of Common Prayer
148 Praise the LORD from the heavens! Praise Him in the high places!
2 Praise Him, all His angels! Praise Him, all His army!
3 Praise Him, Sun and Moon! Praise Him, all bright stars!
4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and waters above the heavens!
5 Let them praise the Name of the LORD; for He commanded, and they were created.
6 And He has established them forever and ever. He has made an ordinance which shall not pass.
7 Praise the LORD from the Earth, you dragons and all depths:
8 fire and hail, snow and vapors, stormy wind — which execute His Word —
9 mountains and all hills, fruitful trees, and all cedars,10 beasts and all cattle, creeping things and feathered birds,
11 kings of the Earth and all people, princes and all judges of the world,
12 young men and maidens, also old men and children.
13 Let them praise the Name of the LORD; for only His Name is to be exalted. His praise is above the Earth and the heavens.
14 For He has exalted the horn of His people — a praise for all His saints, for the children of Israel — a people that is near to Him. Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD.
149 Sing to the LORD a new song! Let His praise be heard in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in Him Who made him; and let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.
3 Let them praise His Name with the flute. Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD has pleasure in His people. He will make the meek glorious by deliverance.
5 Let the saints be joyful with glory! Let them sing loud upon their beds.
6 Let the high acts of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hands —
7 to execute vengeance upon the heathen and corrections among the people,
8 to bind their kings in chains and their nobles with fetters of iron —
9 so that they may execute upon them the judgment that is written. This honor shall be to all His saints. Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD.
150 Praise God in His Sanctuary! Praise Him in the firmament of His power.
2 Praise Him in His mighty acts! Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.
3 Praise Him in the sound of the trumpet! Praise Him upon the viol and the harp.
4 Praise Him with timbrel and flute! Praise Him with virginals and organs.
5 Praise Him with sounding cymbals! Praise Him with high sounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
114 When Israel went out of Egypt, and the House of Jacob from the barbarous people,
2 Judah was His sanctification, and Israel His dominion.
3 The sea saw it and fled. Jordan was turned back.
4 The mountains leaped like rams, and the hills as lambs!
5 What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, why were you turned back?
6 You mountains, why did you leap like rams, and you hills as lambs?
7 The Earth trembled at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 Who turns the rock into standing water, and the flint into a fountain of water.
115 Not to us, O LORD, not to us; but to Your Name give the glory, for Your loving mercy and for Your truth’s sake.
2 Why shall the heathen say, “Where is their God, now?”
3 But our God is in Heaven. He does whatever He will.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
5 They have a mouth and do not speak. They have eyes and do not see.
6 They have ears and do not hear. They have noses and do not smell.
7 They have hands and do not touch. They have feet and do not walk; nor do they make a sound with their throat.
8 Those who make them are like them. So are all who trust in them.
9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
10 O House of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD. He is their helper and their shield.
12 The LORD has been mindful of us. He will bless. He will bless the House of Israel. He will bless the House of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.
14 The LORD will increase toward you, toward you and toward your children.
15 You are blessed by the LORD, Who made Heaven and Earth.
16 The heavens, even the heavens are the LORD’s; but He has given the Earth to the sons of men.
17 The dead do not praise the LORD, nor any who go down into the silence.
18 But we will praise the LORD from henceforth and forever. Praise the LORD!
6 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria; who were famous at the beginning of the nations. And the House of Israel came to them.
2 Go to Calneh and see. And from there go to Hamath the Great. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Or is the border of their land greater than your border,
3 you who put far away the evil day, and approach the seat of iniquity?
4 They lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their beds; and eat the lambs of the flock and the calves out of the stall.
5 They sing to the sound of the viol. They invent to themselves instruments of music, like David.
6 They drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the chief ointments but are not sorry for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore, they shall now go captive with the first who go captive. And the sorrow of those who stretched themselves is at hand.
8 “The LORD God has sworn by Himself,” says the LORD God of Hosts, “I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces. Therefore, I will deliver up the city with all that is therein.
9 “And if there remain ten men in one house, they shall die.
10 “And his uncle shall take him up and burn him—to carry out the bones out of the house—and shall say to him who is by the sides of the house, ‘Is there still anyone with you?’ And he shall say, ‘None.’ Then he shall say, ‘Hold your tongue. For we may not remember the Name of the LORD.’”
11 For behold, the LORD commands. And He will strike the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12 Shall horses run upon the rock? Or will one plow there with oxen? For you have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood.
13 Yet, you rejoice over nothing. You say, “Have we not gotten horns by our own strength?”
14 “But behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O House of Israel,” says the LORD God of Hosts. “And they shall afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the river of the wilderness.”
5 (a sign of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God, for which you also suffer).
6 For it is a righteous thing with God to repay those who trouble you with tribulation.
7 And to you who are troubled: rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall show Himself from Heaven with His mighty angels
8 in flaming fire, rendering vengeance on those who do not know God and who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ;
9 who shall be punished with everlasting perdition from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power
10 when He shall, on that Day, come to be glorified in His saints and made marvelous in all those who believe, because our testimony toward you was believed.
11 Therefore, we pray always for you that our God may make you worthy of this calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith, with power;
12 so that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
57 Now, Elizabeth’s time came for her to be delivered. And she brought forth a Son.
58 And her neighbors and cousins heard tell how the Lord had showed His great mercy upon her. And they rejoiced with her.
59 And it was so that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the baby. And they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 But his mother answered, and said, “Not so. But he shall be called John.”
61 And they said to her, “There is no one in your family that is named with this name.”
62 Then they made signs to his father, asking how he would like him called.
63 So he asked for writing tablets, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” And they all marveled.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue. And he spoke and praised God.
65 Then fear came on all those who lived near them. And all these words were spread throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 And all those who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child shall this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 Then his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, because He has visited and redeemed His people!
