  1. So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
  2. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.
  3. At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.”
  4. The Work Resumes

    When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.
  5. I also shook out the fold of my garment and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said “Amen” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.
  6. Nehemiah's Generosity

    Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor.
  7. I also persevered in the work on this wall, and we acquired no land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work.
  8. Now what was prepared at my expense for each day was one ox and six choice sheep and birds, and every ten days all kinds of wine in abundance. Yet for all this I did not demand the food allowance of the governor, because the service was too heavy on this people.
  9. Remember for my good, O my God, all that I have done for this people.
  10. For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.
  11. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
  12. All the temple servants and the sons of Solomon's servants were 392.
  13. So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel, lived in their towns. And when the seventh month had come, the people of Israel were in their towns.
  14. Ezra Reads the Law

    And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.
  15. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.
  16. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
  17. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood.
  18. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
  19. This Day Is Holy

    And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.
  20. So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.”
  21. And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
  22. Feast of Booths Celebrated

    On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law.
  23. and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.”
  24. And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing.
  25. And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.
