8 Nú er því engin fordæming fyrir þá, sem tilheyra Kristi Jesú.
2 Lögmál lífsins anda hefur í Kristi Jesú frelsað þig frá lögmáli syndarinnar og dauðans.
3 Það sem lögmálinu var ógerlegt, að því leyti sem það mátti sín einskis fyrir holdinu, það gjörði Guð. Með því að senda sinn eigin son í líkingu syndugs manns gegn syndinni, dæmdi Guð syndina í manninum.
4 Þannig varð réttlætiskröfu lögmálsins fullnægt hjá oss, sem lifum ekki eftir holdi, heldur eftir anda.
5 Því að þeir sem láta stjórnast af holdinu, hyggja á það sem holdsins er, en þeir, sem láta stjórnast af andanum, hyggja á það sem andans er.
6 Hyggja holdsins er dauði, en hyggja andans líf og friður.
7 Hyggja holdsins er fjandskapur gegn Guði, með því að hún lýtur ekki lögmáli Guðs, enda getur hún það ekki.
8 Þeir, sem eru holdsins menn, geta ekki þóknast Guði.
9 En þér eruð ekki holdsins menn, heldur andans menn, þar sem andi Guðs býr í yður. En hafi einhver ekki anda Krists, þá er sá ekki hans.
10 Ef Kristur er í yður, þá er líkaminn að sönnu dauður vegna syndarinnar, en andinn veitir líf vegna réttlætisins.
11 Ef andi hans, sem vakti Jesú frá dauðum, býr í yður, þá mun hann, sem vakti Krist frá dauðum, einnig gjöra dauðlega líkami yðar lifandi með anda sínum, sem í yður býr.
12 Þannig erum vér, bræður, í skuld, ekki við holdið að lifa að hætti holdsins.
13 Því að ef þér lifið að hætti holdsins, munuð þér deyja, en ef þér deyðið með andanum gjörðir líkamans, munuð þér lifa.
14 Því að allir þeir, sem leiðast af anda Guðs, þeir eru Guðs börn.
15 En þér hafið ekki fengið anda, sem gjörir yður að þrælum að lifa aftur í hræðslu, heldur hafið þér fengið anda, sem gefur yður barnarétt. Í þeim anda köllum vér: "Abba, faðir!"
16 Sjálfur andinn vitnar með vorum anda, að vér erum Guðs börn.
17 En ef vér erum börn, þá erum vér líka erfingjar, og það erfingjar Guðs, en samarfar Krists, því að vér líðum með honum, til þess að vér einnig verðum vegsamlegir með honum.
18 Ég lít svo á, að ekki séu þjáningar þessa tíma neitt í samanburði við þá dýrð, sem á oss mun opinberast.
19 Því að sköpunin þráir, að Guðs börn verði opinber.
20 Sköpunin var undirorpin fallvaltleikanum, ekki sjálfviljug, heldur vegna hans, sem varp henni undir hann,
21 í von um að jafnvel sjálf sköpunin muni verða leyst úr ánauð forgengileikans til dýrðarfrelsis Guðs barna.
22 Vér vitum, að öll sköpunin stynur líka og hefur fæðingarhríðir allt til þessa.
23 En ekki einungis hún, heldur og vér, sem höfum frumgróða andans, jafnvel vér stynjum með sjálfum oss meðan vér bíðum þess, að Guð gefi oss barnarétt og endurleysi líkami vora.
24 Því að í voninni erum vér hólpnir orðnir. Von, er sést, er ekki von, því að hver vonar það, sem hann sér?
25 En ef vér vonum það, sem vér sjáum ekki, þá bíðum vér þess með þolinmæði.
26 Þannig hjálpar og andinn oss í veikleika vorum. Vér vitum ekki, hvers vér eigum að biðja eins og ber, en sjálfur andinn biður fyrir oss með andvörpum, sem ekki verður orðum að komið.
27 En hann, sem hjörtun rannsakar, veit hver er hyggja andans, að hann biður fyrir heilögum eftir vilja Guðs.
28 Vér vitum, að þeim, sem Guð elska, samverkar allt til góðs, þeim sem kallaðir eru samkvæmt ákvörðun Guðs.
29 Því að þá, sem hann þekkti fyrirfram, hefur hann og fyrirhugað til þess að líkjast mynd sonar síns, svo að hann sé frumburður meðal margra bræðra.
30 Þá sem hann fyrirhugaði, þá hefur hann og kallað, og þá sem hann kallaði, hefur hann og réttlætt, en þá sem hann réttlætti, hefur hann einnig vegsamlega gjört.
31 Hvað eigum vér þá að segja við þessu? Ef Guð er með oss, hver er þá á móti oss?
32 Hann sem þyrmdi ekki sínum eigin syni, heldur framseldi hann fyrir oss alla, hví skyldi hann ekki líka gefa oss allt með honum?
33 Hver skyldi ásaka Guðs útvöldu? Guð sýknar.
34 Hver sakfellir? Kristur Jesús er sá, sem dáinn er. Og meira en það: Hann er upprisinn, hann er við hægri hönd Guðs og hann biður fyrir oss.
35 Hver mun gjöra oss viðskila við kærleika Krists? Mun þjáning geta það eða þrenging, ofsókn, hungur eða nekt, háski eða sverð?
36 Það er eins og ritað er: Þín vegna erum vér deyddir allan daginn, erum metnir sem sláturfé.
37 Nei, í öllu þessu vinnum vér fullan sigur fyrir fulltingi hans, sem elskaði oss.
38 Því að ég er þess fullviss, að hvorki dauði né líf, englar né tignir, hvorki hið yfirstandandi né hið ókomna, hvorki kraftar,
39 hæð né dýpt, né nokkuð annað skapað muni geta gjört oss viðskila við kærleika Guðs, sem birtist í Kristi Jesú Drottni vorum.
9 Ég tala sannleika í Kristi, ég lýg ekki. Samviska mín vitnar það með mér, upplýst af heilögum anda,
2 að ég hef hryggð mikla og sífellda kvöl í hjarta mínu.
3 Ég gæti óskað, að mér væri sjálfum útskúfað frá Kristi, ef það yrði til heilla fyrir bræður mína og ættmenn,
4 Ísraelsmenn. Þeir fengu sonarréttinn, dýrðina, sáttmálana, löggjöfina, helgihaldið og fyrirheitin.
5 Þeim tilheyra og feðurnir, og af þeim er Kristur kominn sem maður, hann sem er yfir öllu, Guð, blessaður um aldir. Amen.
6 Það er ekki svo sem Guðs orð hafi brugðist. Því að ekki eru allir þeir Ísraelsmenn, sem af Ísrael eru komnir.
7 Ekki eru heldur allir börn Abrahams, þótt þeir séu niðjar hans, heldur: "Afkomendur Ísaks munu taldir verða niðjar þínir."
8 Það merkir: Ekki eru líkamlegir afkomendur hans Guðs börn, heldur teljast fyrirheitsbörnin sannir niðjar.
9 Því að þetta orð er fyrirheit: "Í þetta mund mun ég aftur koma, og þá skal Sara hafa son alið."
10 Og ekki nóg með það. Því var líka svo farið með Rebekku. Hún var þunguð að tveim sveinum af eins manns völdum, Ísaks föður vors.
11 Nú, til þess að það stæði stöðugt, að ákvörðun Guðs um útvalningu væri óháð verkunum og öll komin undir vilja þess, er kallar,
12 þá var henni sagt, áður en sveinarnir voru fæddir og áður en þeir höfðu aðhafst gott eða illt: "Hinn eldri skal þjóna hinum yngri."
13 Eins og ritað er: "Jakob elskaði ég, en Esaú hataði ég."
14 Hvað eigum vér þá að segja? Er Guð óréttvís? Fjarri fer því.
15 Því hann segir við Móse: "Ég mun miskunna þeim, sem ég vil miskunna, og líkna þeim, sem ég vil líkna."
16 Það er því ekki komið undir vilja mannsins né áreynslu, heldur Guði, sem miskunnar.
17 Því er í Ritningunni sagt við Faraó: "Einmitt til þess hóf ég þig, að ég fengi sýnt mátt minn á þér og nafn mitt yrði boðað um alla jörðina."
18 Svo miskunnar hann þá þeim, sem hann vill, en forherðir þann, sem hann vill.
19 Þú munt nú vilja segja við mig: "Hvað er hann þá að ásaka oss framar? Hver fær staðið gegn vilja hans?"
20 Hver ert þú, maður, að þú skulir deila á Guð? Hvort mundi smíðisgripurinn segja við smiðinn: "Hví gjörðir þú mig svona?"
21 Eða hefur ekki leirkerasmiðurinn leirinn á valdi sínu, svo að hann megi gjöra úr sama deiginu ker til sæmdar og annað til vansæmdar?
22 En ef nú Guð, sem vildi sýna reiði sína og auglýsa mátt sinn, hefur með miklu langlyndi umborið ker reiðinnar, sem búin eru til glötunar,
23 og ef hann hefur gjört það til þess að auglýsa ríkdóm dýrðar sinnar á kerum miskunnarinnar, sem hann hafði fyrirfram búið til dýrðar?
24 Slík ker erum vér, sem hann hefur kallað, ekki aðeins úr flokki Gyðinga, heldur og úr flokki heiðingja.
25 Eins og hann líka segir hjá Hósea: Lýð, sem ekki var minn, mun ég kalla minn, og þá elskaða, sem ekki var elskuð,
26 og á þeim stað, þar sem við þá var sagt: þér eruð ekki minn lýður, þar munu þeir verða kallaðir synir Guðs lifanda.
27 En Jesaja hrópar yfir Ísrael: "Þótt tala Ísraels sona væri eins og sandur sjávarins, þá skulu leifar einar frelsaðar verða.
28 Drottinn mun gjöra upp reikning sinn á jörðunni, binda enda á hann og ljúka við hann í skyndi,"
29 og eins hefur Jesaja sagt: "Ef Drottinn hersveitanna hefði ekki látið oss eftir niðja, værum vér orðnir eins og Sódóma, vér værum líkir Gómorru."
30 Hvað eigum vér þá að segja? Heiðingjarnir, sem ekki sóttust eftir réttlæti, hafa öðlast réttlæti, _ réttlæti, sem er af trú.
31 En Ísrael, sem vildi halda lögmál er veitt gæti réttlæti, náði því ekki.
32 Hvers vegna? Af því að þeir ætluðu sér að réttlætast með verkum, ekki af trú. Þeir hnutu um ásteytingarsteininn,

6 En réttlætið af trúnni mælir þannig: "Seg þú ekki í hjarta þínu: Hver mun fara upp í himininn?" _ það er: til að sækja Krist ofan, _
7 eða: "Hver mun stíga niður í undirdjúpið?" _ það er: til að sækja Krist upp frá dauðum.
8 Hvað segir það svo? "Nálægt þér er orðið, í munni þínum og í hjarta þínu." Það er: Orð trúarinnar, sem vér prédikum.
9 Ef þú játar með munni þínum: Jesús er Drottinn _ og trúir í hjarta þínu, að Guð hafi uppvakið hann frá dauðum, muntu hólpinn verða.
10 Með hjartanu er trúað til réttlætis, en með munninum játað til hjálpræðis.
11 Ritningin segir: "Hver sem trúir á hann, mun ekki til skammar verða."
12 Ekki er munur á Gyðingi og grískum manni, því að hinn sami er Drottinn allra, fullríkur fyrir alla þá sem ákalla hann;
13 því að "hver sem ákallar nafn Drottins, mun hólpinn verða."
14 En hvernig eiga þeir að ákalla þann, sem þeir trúa ekki á? Og hvernig eiga þeir að trúa á þann, sem þeir hafa ekki heyrt um? Og hvernig eiga þeir að heyra, án þess að einhver prédiki?
15 Og hver getur prédikað, nema hann sé sendur? Svo er og ritað: "Hversu fagurt er fótatak þeirra, sem færa fagnaðarboðin góðu."
16 En þeir hlýddu ekki allir fagnaðarerindinu. Jesaja segir: "Drottinn, hver trúði því, sem vér boðuðum?"
17 Svo kemur þá trúin af boðuninni, en boðunin byggist á orði Krists.
18 En ég spyr: Hafa þeir ekki heyrt? Jú, vissulega, "raust þeirra hefur borist út um alla jörðina og orð þeirra til endimarka heimsbyggðarinnar."

Life Through the Spirit
8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation(A) for those who are in Christ Jesus,(B) 2 because through Christ Jesus(C) the law of the Spirit who gives life(D) has set you[a] free(E) from the law of sin(F) and death. 3 For what the law was powerless(G) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b](H) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(I) to be a sin offering.[c](J) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement(K) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(L)
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(M) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(N) 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death,(O) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(P) and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(Q) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh(R) cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(S) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(T) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(U) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(V) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(W) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(X) because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you.
12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(Y) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(Z) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(AA) you will live.(AB)
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(AC) are the children of God.(AD) 15 The Spirit(AE) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(AF) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[f] And by him we cry, “Abba,[g] Father.”(AG) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(AH) that we are God’s children.(AI) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(AJ)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(AK) in order that we may also share in his glory.(AL)
Present Suffering and Future Glory
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(AM) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(AN) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,(AO) in hope 21 that[h] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay(AP) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.(AQ)
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning(AR) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,(AS) groan(AT) inwardly as we wait eagerly(AU) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.(AV) 24 For in this hope we were saved.(AW) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.(AX) Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.(AY)
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit(AZ) himself intercedes for us(BA) through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts(BB) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes(BC) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good(BD) of those who love him, who[i] have been called(BE) according to his purpose.(BF) 29 For those God foreknew(BG) he also predestined(BH) to be conformed to the image of his Son,(BI) that he might be the firstborn(BJ) among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined,(BK) he also called;(BL) those he called, he also justified;(BM) those he justified, he also glorified.(BN)
More Than Conquerors
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things?(BO) If God is for us,(BP) who can be against us?(BQ) 32 He who did not spare his own Son,(BR) but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge(BS) against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns?(BT) No one. Christ Jesus who died(BU)—more than that, who was raised to life(BV)—is at the right hand of God(BW) and is also interceding for us.(BX) 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?(BY) Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?(BZ) 36 As it is written:
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors(CB) through him who loved us.(CC) 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future,(CD) nor any powers,(CE) 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God(CF) that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.(CG)
Paul’s Anguish Over Israel
9 I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying,(CH) my conscience confirms(CI) it through the Holy Spirit— 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself(CJ) were cursed(CK) and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people,(CL) those of my own race,(CM) 4 the people of Israel.(CN) Theirs is the adoption to sonship;(CO) theirs the divine glory,(CP) the covenants,(CQ) the receiving of the law,(CR) the temple worship(CS) and the promises.(CT) 5 Theirs are the patriarchs,(CU) and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah,(CV) who is God over all,(CW) forever praised Amen.
God’s Sovereign Choice
6 It is not as though God’s word(CY) had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.(CZ) 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[m](DA) 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children,(DB) but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.(DC) 9 For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”[n](DD)
10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.(DE) 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad(DF)—in order that God’s purpose(DG) in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”[o](DH) 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”[p](DI)
14 What then shall we say?(DJ) Is God unjust? Not at all!(DK) 15 For he says to Moses,
“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[q](DL)
16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.(DM) 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[r](DN) 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.(DO)
19 One of you will say to me:(DP) “Then why does God still blame us?(DQ) For who is able to resist his will?”(DR) 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?(DS) “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,(DT) ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[s](DU) 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?(DV)
22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience(DW) the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?(DX) 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory(DY) known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory(DZ)— 24 even us, whom he also called,(EA) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(EB) 25 As he says in Hosea:
“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”[t](EC)
26 and,
“In the very place where it was said to them,
‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”[u](ED)
27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:
“Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,(EE)
only the remnant will be saved.(EF)
28 For the Lord will carry out
his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”[v](EG)
29 It is just as Isaiah said previously:
“Unless the Lord Almighty(EH)
had left us descendants,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.”[w](EI)
Israel’s Unbelief
30 What then shall we say?(EJ) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;(EK) 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,(EL) have not attained their goal.(EM) 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.(EN) 33 As it is written:
“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[x](EO)
10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire(EP) and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous(EQ) for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.(ER) 4 Christ is the culmination of the law(ES) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.(ET)
5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”[y](EU) 6 But the righteousness that is by faith(EV) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[z](EW) (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[aa](EX) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).(EY) 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[ab](EZ) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare(FA) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(FB) and believe(FC) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,(FD) you will be saved.(FE) 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[ac](FF) 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile(FG)—the same Lord is Lord of all(FH) and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord(FI) will be saved.”[ad](FJ)
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[ae](FK)
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news.(FL) For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[af](FM) 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,(FN) and the message is heard through the word about Christ.(FO) 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:
19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says,
“I will make you envious(FQ) by those who are not a nation;
I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.”[ah](FR)
20 And Isaiah boldly says,
“I was found by those who did not seek me;
