16 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and testing, desired Him that He would show them a sign from Heaven.

He answered and said unto them, “When it is evening ye say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’

And in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and lowering.’ O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky, but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.

And when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

Then Jesus said unto them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”

But when Jesus perceived this, He said unto them, “O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, ‘because ye have brought no bread’?

Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

10 Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spoke it not to you concerning bread, but that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?”

12 Then understood they that He bade them not to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

14 And they said, “Some say that Thou art John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father who is in Heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.”

20 Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ.

21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto His disciples that He must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22 Then Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Be it far from Thee, Lord; this shall not happen unto Thee.”

23 But He turned and said unto Peter, “Get thee behind Me, Satan! Thou art an offense unto Me; for thou savorest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”

24 Then Jesus said unto His disciples, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.

26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

27 For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He shall reward every man according to his works.

28 Verily I say unto you, there are some standing here who shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in His Kingdom.”

The Demand for a Sign(A)

16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(B) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(C)

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](D) A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(E) Jesus then left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(F)

They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(G) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(H) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(I) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(J)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(K)

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(L) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(M)

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(N)

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(O) but by my Father in heaven.(P) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](Q) and on this rock I will build my church,(R) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(S) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(T) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(U) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death(V)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(W) and suffer many things(X) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(Y) and that he must be killed(Z) and on the third day(AA) be raised to life.(AB)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AC) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AD) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AE) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AF) is going to come(AG) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AH)

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

13 The same day, Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside.

And great multitudes were gathered together unto Him, so that He went into a boat and sat, and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

And He spoke many things unto them in parables, saying, “Behold, a sower went forth to sow.

And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside; and the fowls came and devoured them up.

Some fell upon stony places where they had not much earth; and forthwith they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth.

And when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.

And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up and choked them.

But others fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

10 And the disciples came and said unto Him, “Why speakest Thou unto them in parables?”

11 He answered and said unto them, “Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it is not given.

12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance. But whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath.

13 Therefore speak I to them in parables, because seeing, they see not, and hearing, they hear not, neither do they understand.

14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, ‘By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive.

15 For this people’s heart has waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

17 For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

18 “Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower:

19 When any one heareth the Word of the Kingdom and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he that received seed by the wayside.

20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the Word and at once with joy receiveth it;

21 yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while. For when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the Word, by and by he loses faith.

22 He also that received the seed among the thorns is he that heareth the Word; and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the Word, and he becometh unfruitful.

23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the Word and understandeth it; who also beareth fruit and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

24 Another parable put He forth before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is likened unto a man who sowed good seed in his field;

25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26 But when the blades had sprung up and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, ‘Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? From whence then hath come the tares?’

28 He said unto them, ‘An enemy hath done this.’ The servants said unto him, ‘Wilt thou then have us go and gather them up?’

29 But he said, ‘Nay, lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

31 Another parable put He forth before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,

32 which indeed is the least of all seeds; but when it is grown it is the greatest among herbs and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.”

33 Another parable spoke He unto them: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened.”

34 All these things spoke Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spoke He not unto them,

35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house, and His disciples came unto Him, saying, “Explain unto us the parable of the tares of the field.”

37 He answered and said unto them, “He that soweth the good seed is the Son of Man.

38 The field is the world, the good seed are the children of the Kingdom, but the tares are the children of the wicked one.

39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the world, and the reapers are the angels.

40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be at the end of this world.

41 The Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His Kingdom all things that offend and them that do iniquity,

42 and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

44 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field, which, when a man hath found, he hideth; and for the joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls,

46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind,

48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from among the just,

50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”

51 Jesus said unto them, “Have ye understood all these things?” They said unto Him, “Yea, Lord.”

52 Then said He unto them, “Therefore every scribe who is instructed unto the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.”

53 And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these parables, He departed thence.

54 And when He had come into His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished and said, “From whence hath this man this wisdom and these mighty works?

55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary and his brethren James and Joseph, and Simon and Judas?

56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? From whence then hath this man all these things?”

57 And they were offended at Him. But Jesus said unto them, “A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country and in his own house.”

58 And He did not many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

14 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus

and said unto his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works show forth themselves in him.”

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

For John said unto him, “It is not lawful for thee to have her.”

And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,

whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

And she, being beforehand instructed by her mother, said, “Give me here John the Baptist’s head on a charger.”

And the king was sorry; nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and those who sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11 And his head was brought on a charger and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.

12 And his disciples came, and took up the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13 When Jesus heard of it, He departed thence by boat into a desert place apart. And when the people had heard thereof, they followed Him on foot out of the cities.

14 And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their sick.

15 And when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a desert place and the time is now past. Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves victuals.”

16 But Jesus said unto them, “They need not depart. Give ye them to eat.”

17 And they said unto Him, “We have here but five loaves and two fishes.”

18 And He said, “Bring them hither to Me.”

19 And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves and the two fishes; and looking up to Heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20 And they all ate and were filled. And they took up the fragments that remained, twelve baskets full.

21 And those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 And straightway Jesus constrained His disciples to get into a boat and to go before Him unto the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.

23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up onto a mountain apart to pray. And when evening had come, He was there alone.

24 But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a spirit”; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spoke unto them, saying, “Be of good cheer. It is I; be not afraid.”

28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it be Thou, bid me come unto Thee on the water.”

29 And He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand and caught him and said unto him, “O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?”

32 And when they had come into the boat, the wind ceased.

33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “In truth Thou art the Son of God.”

34 And when they had gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35 And when the men of that place learned of Him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto Him all who were diseased.

36 And they besought Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

15 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, who were from Jerusalem, saying,

“Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.”

But He answered and said unto them, “Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor thy father and mother,’ and, ‘He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.’

But ye say that whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, ‘by whatsoever thou might have profited by me, it is a gift,’

and honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

‘This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.’”

10 And He called the multitude and said unto them, “Hear and understand:

11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”

12 Then came His disciples and said unto Him, “Knowest Thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying?”

13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up.

14 Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”

15 Then answered Peter and said unto Him, “Explain to us this parable.”

16 And Jesus said, “Are ye also yet without understanding?

17 Do ye not yet understand that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the drain?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20 these are the things which defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands defileth not a man.”

21 Then Jesus went thence and departed into the region of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same region and cried unto Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Thou Son of David! My daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.”

23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and besought Him, saying, “Send her away, for she crieth after us.”

24 But He answered and said, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord help me.”

26 But He answered and said, “It is not meet to take children’s bread and cast it to dogs.”

27 And she said, “Truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, “O woman, great is thy faith. Be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

29 And Jesus departed from thence and came nigh unto the Sea of Galilee, and went up onto a mountain and sat down there.

30 And great multitudes came unto Him, having with them those who were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them,

31 insomuch that the multitude wondered when they saw the dumb to speak, and the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see. And they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Jesus called His disciples unto Him and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with Me now three days and have had nothing to eat; and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint on the way.”

33 And His disciples said unto Him, “From whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness as to fill so great a multitude?”

34 And Jesus said unto them, “How many loaves have ye?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fishes.”

35 And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

36 And He took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and broke them and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37 And they all ate and were filled. And they took up of the broken pieces that were left, seven baskets full.

38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39 And He sent away the multitude, and took the boat and went into the coasts of Magdala.

17 And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up onto a high mountain apart.

And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light.

And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him.

Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles: one for Thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And behold, a voice out of the cloud, said, “This Is My Beloved Son In Whom I Am Well Pleased. Hear Ye Him!”

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were sore afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and be not afraid.”

And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, “Tell the vision to no man until the Son of Man be risen again from the dead.”

10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?”

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, “Elijah truly shall first come and restore all things.

12 But I say unto you that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they pleased. Likewise shall also the Son of Man suffer by them.”

13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

14 And when they had come to the multitude, there came to Him a certain man, kneeling down to Him and saying,

15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is lunatic and sorely vexed; for ofttimes he falleth into the fire and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to Thy disciples, and they could not cure him.”

17 Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to Me.”

18 And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said, “Why could we not cast him out?”

20 And Jesus said unto them, “Because of your unbelief; for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, ‘Remove hence to yonder place,’ and it shall remove. And nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 However this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, “The Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of men.

23 And they shall kill Him, and the third day He shall be raised again.” And they were exceeding sorry.

24 And when they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the tribute money came to Peter and said, “Doth not your master pay tribute?”

25 He said, “Yes.” And when he had come into the house, Jesus preceded him, saying, “What thinkest thou, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? From their own children, or from strangers?”

26 Peter said unto Him, “From strangers.” Jesus said unto him, “Then are the children free.

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up. And when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money. That take, and give unto them for Me and thee.”

18 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”

And Jesus called a little child unto Him, and set him in the midst of them,

and said, “Verily I say unto you, unless ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in My name, receiveth Me.

But whoso shall cause one of these little ones who believe in Me to fall, it were better for him that a millstone were hung about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

“Woe unto the world because of offenses! For it must happen that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh.

Therefore if thy hand or thy foot cause thee to fall, cut them off and cast them from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.

And if thine eye cause thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.

10 “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you that in Heaven their angels do always behold the face of My Father who is in Heaven.

11 “For the Son of Man is come to save that which was lost.

12 How think ye? If a man have a hundred sheep and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains and seeketh that which is gone astray?

13 And if it so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more over that sheep than over the ninety and nine which went not astray.

14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in Heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

15 “Moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that ‘in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’

17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church; but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican.

18 Verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and so whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.

19 “Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth concerning anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in Heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.”

21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?”

22 And Jesus said unto him, “I say not unto thee, until seven times, but until seventy times seven.

23 “Therefore is the Kingdom of Heaven likened unto a certain king who would settle accounts with his servants.

24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him who owed him ten thousand talents.

25 But inasmuch as he could not pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.

26 The servant therefore fell down and did homage to him, saying,‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.’

27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him and forgave him the debt.

28 But the same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred pence. And he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what thou owest.’

29 And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.’

30 And he would not, but went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt.

31 So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

32 Then his lord, after he had called him, said unto him, ‘O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me.

33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee?’

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors till he should pay all that was due unto him.

35 So likewise shall My heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother’s trespasses.”

19 And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these sayings, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.

And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.

The Pharisees also came unto Him, testing Him and saying unto Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?”

And He answered and said unto them, “Have ye not read, that He that made them at the beginning made them male and female,

and said, ‘For this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh’?

Therefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

They said unto Him, “Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away?”

He said unto them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, suffered you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and whoso marrieth her who is put away doth commit adultery.”

10 His disciples said unto Him, “If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.”

11 But He said unto them, “All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12 For there are some eunuchs who were so born from their mother’s womb, and there are some eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”

13 Then were there brought unto Him little children, that He should put His hands on them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them,

14 but Jesus said, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not to come unto Me,for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

15 And He laid His hands on them and departed thence.

16 And behold, one came and said unto Him, “Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?”

17 And He said unto him, “Why callest thou Me good? There is none good but One, that is, God. But if thou wilt enter into Life, keep the commandments.”

18 He said unto Him, “Which?” Jesus said, “‘Thou shalt do no murder; thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness;

19 honor thy father and thy mother; and, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.’”

20 The young man said unto Him, “All these things have I kept from my youth up. What lack I yet?”

21 Jesus said unto him, “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell what thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in Heaven; and come and follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23 Then said Jesus unto His disciples, “Verily I say unto you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

24 And again I say unto you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.”

25 When His disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

26 But Jesus beheld them and said unto them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

27 Then Peter answered and said unto Him, “Behold, we have forsaken all and followed Thee. What shall we have therefore?”

28 And Jesus said unto them, “Verily I say unto you, that ye that have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And everyone that hath forsaken houses or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold and shall inherit everlasting life.

30 But many that are first shall be last, and the last shall be first.

20 “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard.

And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

and said unto them, ‘Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.’ And they went their way.

Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour and did likewise.

And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said unto them, ‘Why stand ye here all the day idle?’

They said unto him, ‘Because no man hath hired us.’ He said unto them, ‘Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.’

So when evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.’

And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

10 But when the first came, they supposed they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the master of the house,

12 saying, ‘These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’

13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a penny?

14 Take that which is thine and go thy way. I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?’

16 So the last shall be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”

17 And Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart on the way and said unto them,

18 “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn Him to death,

19 and shall deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify Him. And the third day, He shall rise again.”

20 Then came to Him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshiping Him and desiring a certain thing of Him.

21 And He said unto her, “What wilt thou?” She said unto Him, “Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on Thy right hand and the other on the left in Thy Kingdom.”

22 But Jesus answered and said, “Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said unto Him, “We are able.”

23 And He said unto them, “Ye shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared by My Father.”

24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

25 But Jesus called them unto Him and said, “Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

26 But it shall not be so among you; but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

27 and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant,

28 even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed Him.

30 And behold, two blind men were sitting by the wayside when they heard that Jesus was passing by, and they cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Thou Son of David!”

31 And the multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace; but they cried out the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Thou Son of David!”

32 And Jesus stood still, and called them and said, “What will ye that I shall do unto you?”

33 They said unto Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”

34 So Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

The Parable of the Sower(A)(B)(C)

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house(D) and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat(E) and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred,(F) sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”(G)

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven(H) has been given to you,(I) but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(J) 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.(K)

14 In them is fulfilled(L) the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a](M)

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(N) 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see(O) but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom(P) and does not understand it, the evil one(Q) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(R) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(S) choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”(T)

The Parable of the Weeds

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(U) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(V)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(W)(X)

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(Y) a mustard seed,(Z) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(AA)

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(AB) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[b] of flour(AC) until it worked all through the dough.”(AD)

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(AE) 35 So was fulfilled(AF) what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables,
I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[c](AG)

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(AH) of the weeds in the field.”

37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(AI) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(AJ) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(AK) is the end of the age,(AL) and the harvesters are angels.(AM)

40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(AN) will send out his angels,(AO) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(AP) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(AQ) in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.(AR)

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(AS) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(AT)

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AU) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AV) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(AW) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous(AX) 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(AY)

51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

A Prophet Without Honor(AZ)

53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(BA) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(BB) and they were amazed.(BC) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(BD) Isn’t his mother’s(BE) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(BF) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(BG) at him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(BH)

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

John the Baptist Beheaded(BI)

14 At that time Herod(BJ) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,(BK) and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;(BL) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(BM) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(BN) for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(BO) Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(BP)

On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(BQ) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(BR) Then they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(BS)(BT)

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(BU) and healed their sick.(BV)

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves(BW) of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(BX) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water(BY)(BZ)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(CA) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(CB) they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(CC) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(CD)

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(CE) he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(CF)

34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(CG) and all who touched it were healed.

That Which Defiles(CH)

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(CI)

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[d](CJ) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[e](CK) But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(CL)[f](CM)

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(CN) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(CO)

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(CP) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[g](CQ) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(CR)

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(CS)

16 “Are you still so dull?”(CT) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(CU) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(CV) 20 These are what defile a person;(CW) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(CX)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(CY) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(CZ) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(DA)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(DB)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(DC) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(DD) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(DE)(DF)(DG)

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(DH) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(DI)

32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(DJ) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(DK) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(DL) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

The Demand for a Sign(DM)

16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(DN) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(DO)

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[h](DP) A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(DQ) Jesus then left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(DR)

They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(DS) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(DT) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(DU) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(DV)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(DW)

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(DX) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(DY)

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(DZ)

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(EA) but by my Father in heaven.(EB) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[i](EC) and on this rock I will build my church,(ED) and the gates of Hades[j] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(EE) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[k] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[l] loosed in heaven.”(EF) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(EG) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death(EH)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(EI) and suffer many things(EJ) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(EK) and that he must be killed(EL) and on the third day(EM) be raised to life.(EN)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(EO) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(EP) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[m] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(EQ) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(ER) is going to come(ES) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(ET)

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

The Transfiguration(EU)(EV)

17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John(EW) the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.(EX) Listen to him!”(EY)

When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”(EZ) When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone(FA) what you have seen, until the Son of Man(FB) has been raised from the dead.”(FC)

10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.(FD) 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come,(FE) and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.(FF) In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer(FG) at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.(FH)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(FI)

14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures(FJ) and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith(FK) as small as a mustard seed,(FL) you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.(FM) Nothing will be impossible for you.” [21] [n]

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man(FN) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him,(FO) and on the third day(FP) he will be raised to life.”(FQ) And the disciples were filled with grief.

The Temple Tax

24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax(FR) came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes(FS)—from their own children or from others?”

26 “From others,” Peter answered.

“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense,(FT) go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven(FU)

18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,(FV) you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.(FW) Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.(FX) And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.(FY)

Causing to Stumble

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.(FZ) Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!(GA) If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble,(GB) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble,(GC) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.(GD)

The Parable of the Wandering Sheep(GE)

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels(GF) in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. [11] [o]

12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

Dealing With Sin in the Church

15 “If your brother or sister[p] sins,[q] go and point out their fault,(GG) just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[r](GH) 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church;(GI) and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.(GJ)

18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[s] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[t] loosed in heaven.(GK)

19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them(GL) by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”(GM)

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?(GN) Up to seven times?”(GO)

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[u](GP)

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like(GQ) a king who wanted to settle accounts(GR) with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[v] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay,(GS) the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold(GT) to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him.(GU) ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[w] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
