Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

12 At that time ^(A)Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and ^(B)they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. ² But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, ^(C)“Look, your disciples are doing ^(D)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” ³ He said to them, ^(E)“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: ⁴ how he entered the house of God and ate ^(F)the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read ^(G)in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? ⁶ I tell you, ^(H)something greater than the temple is here. ⁷ And if you had known ^(I)what this means, ^(J)‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For ^(K)the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

The Triumphal Entry

²⁸ And when he had said these things, ^(A)he went on ahead, ^(B)going up to Jerusalem. ^29 (C)When he drew near to Bethphage and ^(D)Bethany, at ^(E)the mount that is called Olivet, he sent ^(F)two of the disciples, ³⁰ saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, ^(G)on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. ³¹ If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” ³² So those who were sent went away and found it ^(H)just as he had told them. ³³ And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” ³⁴ And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” ³⁵ And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. ³⁶ And as he rode along, they ^(I)spread their cloaks on the road. ³⁷ As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—^(J)the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice ^(K)for all the mighty works that they had seen, ³⁸ saying, ^(L)“Blessed is ^(M)the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and ^(N)glory in the highest!” ^39 (O)And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” ⁴⁰ He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, ^(P)the very stones would cry out.”

¹² When he had washed their feet and ^(A)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ^(B)“Do you understand what I have done to you? ^13 (C)You call me ^(D)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(E)you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, ^(F)that you also should do just as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(G)a servant^[a] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, ^(H)blessed are you if you do them. ^18 (I)I am not speaking of all of you; I know ^(J)whom I have chosen. But ^(K)the Scripture will be fulfilled,^{[b] (L)}‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ ^19 (M)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. ²⁰ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(N)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

Jesus and Thomas

²⁴ Now ^(A)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,^[a] was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, ^(B)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

²⁶ Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. ^(C)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ^(D)“Peace be with you.” ²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, ^(E)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” ²⁸ Thomas answered him, ^(F)“My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? ^(G)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
