53 Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

He is despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. And we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth; He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare His generation? For He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of My people was He stricken.

And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death, because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief. When thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied. By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He hath poured out His soul unto death. And He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

53 Who has believed our message(A)
and to whom has the arm(B) of the Lord been revealed?(C)
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,(D)
and like a root(E) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance(F) that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering,(G) and familiar with pain.(H)
Like one from whom people hide(I) their faces
he was despised,(J) and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,(K)
yet we considered him punished by God,(L)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.(M)
But he was pierced(N) for our transgressions,(O)
    he was crushed(P) for our iniquities;
the punishment(Q) that brought us peace(R) was on him,
and by his wounds(S) we are healed.(T)
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,(U)
each of us has turned to our own way;(V)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity(W) of us all.

He was oppressed(X) and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;(Y)
he was led like a lamb(Z) to the slaughter,(AA)
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression[a] and judgment(AB) he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;(AC)
for the transgression(AD) of my people he was punished.[b]
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,(AE)
and with the rich(AF) in his death,
though he had done no violence,(AG)
nor was any deceit in his mouth.(AH)

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will(AI) to crush(AJ) him and cause him to suffer,(AK)
and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,(AL)
he will see his offspring(AM) and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper(AN) in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,(AO)
    he will see the light(AP) of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant(AQ) will justify(AR) many,
and he will bear their iniquities.(AS)
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g](AT)
and he will divide the spoils(AU) with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,(AV)
and was numbered with the transgressors.(AW)
For he bore(AX) the sin of many,(AY)
and made intercession(AZ) for the transgressors.

For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole store of bread and the whole store of water,

the mighty man and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, and the prudent and the ancient,

the captain of fifty and the honorable man, and the counselor and the skilled artificer and the eloquent orator.

“And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another and every one by his neighbor; the child shall behave himself proudly against the elder, and the base against the honorable.”

When a man shall take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying, “Thou hast clothing; be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand,”

in that day he shall swear, saying, “I will not be a healer, for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: Make me not a ruler of the people!”

For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen, because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory.

The show of their countenance doth witness against them, and they declare their sin as Sodom; they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! For they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

10 Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruits of their doings.

11 Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them! O My people, they that lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

13 The Lord standeth up to plead and standeth to judge the people.

14 The Lord will enter into judgment with the elders of His people and the princes thereof: “For ye have eaten up the vineyard, and the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

15 What mean ye that ye beat My people to pieces and grind the faces of the poor?” saith the Lord God of hosts.

16 Moreover the Lord saith: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet,

17 therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will uncover their secret parts.”

18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their hair nets and their round ornaments like the moon,

19 the chains and the bracelets and the spangled ornaments,

20 the bonnets and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands and the tablets and the earrings,

21 the rings and nose jewels,

22 the changeable suits of apparel and the mantles and the shawls and the crisping pins,

23 the mirrors and the fine linen, and the hoods and the veils.

24 And it shall come to pass that instead of sweet smell there shall be stench; and instead of a girdle, a rent; and instead of wellset hair, baldness; and instead of a sash, a girding of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.

25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she, being desolate, shall sit upon the ground.

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by thy name to take away our reproach.”

In that day shall the Branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious; and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for those who have escaped of Israel.

And it shall come to pass that he that is left in Zion and he that remaineth in Jerusalem shall be called holy — even every one who is written among the living in Jerusalem —

when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning.

And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for upon all the glory shall be a defense.

And there shall be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain.

Now will I sing to my Well-beloved a song of my Beloved concerning His vineyard: my Well-beloved hath a vineyard on a very fruitful hill.

And He fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine; and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a wine press therein. And He looked for it to bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

“And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between Me and My vineyard.

What could have been done more to My vineyard than I have not done in it? Why, when I looked for it to bring forth good grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?

“And now, I will tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down.

And I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned nor dug, but there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.”

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah, His pleasant plant. And He looked for judgment, but behold, oppression; for righteousness, but behold, a cry.

Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

In mine ears said the Lord of hosts: “In truth many houses shall be desolate, even the great and fair, without inhabitant.

10 Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath, and a homer of seed shall yield but an ephah.”

11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may pursue strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!

12 And the harp and the viol, and the taboret and pipe, and wine are in their feasts; but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of His hands.

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge; and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth beyond measure; and their glory and their multitude and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

15 And the lowly man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God who is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

17 Then shall the lambs feed according to their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw along iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope;

19 who say, “Let Him make speed and hasten His work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it.”

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that count darkness as light, and light as darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink,

23 who justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against His people, and He hath stretched forth His hand against them, and hath smitten them; and the hills did tremble, and their carcasses were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this, His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

26 And He will lift up an ensign to the nations from afar, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth; and behold, they shall come with speed swiftly.

27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken;

28 whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind.

29 Their roaring shall be like a lion; they shall roar like young lions; yea, they shall roar and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.

30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea; and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow; and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple.

Above it stood the seraphims; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

And one cried unto another and said, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”

And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

Then said I, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”

Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar.

And he laid it upon my mouth and said, “Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.”

Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then said I, “Here am I. Send me!”

And He said, “Go, and tell this people: “‘Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.’

10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert and be healed.”

11 Then said I, “Lord, how long?” And He answered, “Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,

12 and the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

13 “But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return and shall be eaten, as a teil tree and as an oak whose substance is in them when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.”

And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

And it was told the house of David, saying, “Syria is confederate with Ephraim.” And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.

Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, “Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou and Shearjashub [that is, The remnant shall return], thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the Fuller’s Field,

and say unto him: ‘Take heed, and be quiet. Fear not, neither be fainthearted at the two tails of these smoking firebrands — at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,

“Let us go up against Judah and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeel,”

thus saith the Lord God: It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.

And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.’”

10 Moreover the Lord spoke again unto Ahaz, saying,

11 “Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.”

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.”

13 And Isaiah said, “Hear ye now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

14 Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

15 Butter and honey shall He eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.

16 For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

17 The Lord shall bring upon thee and upon thy people and upon thy father’s house days that have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah: even the king of Assyria.”

18 And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns and upon all bushes.

20 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a hired razor (namely, by those beyond the river, by the king of Assyria) the head and the hair of the feet, and it shall also consume the beard.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day that a man shall nourish a young cow and two sheep;

22 and it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give, that he shall eat butter, for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

23 And it shall come to pass in that day in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silverlings, that it shall be even for briers and thorns.

24 With arrows and with bows shall men come thither, because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

25 And on all hills that shall be dug with the mattock, there shall not be a coming thither for fear of briers and thorns, but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen and for the treading of lesser cattle.

Moreover the Lord said unto me, “Take thee a great scroll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.”

And I took unto me faithful witnesses to attest: Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

And I went unto the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then said the Lord to me, “Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

For before the child shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father,’ and ‘My mother,’ the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away to the king of Assyria.”

The Lord spoke also unto me again, saying,

“Inasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that flow softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son,

now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels and go over all his banks.

And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck. And the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.”

Associate yourselves, O ye people, yet ye shall be broken in pieces! And give ear, all ye of far countries. Gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces!

10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “Say ye not, ‘A confederacy,’ to all those to whom this people shall say, ‘A confederacy’; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

13 Sanctify the Lord of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.

14 And He shall be for you a sanctuary, but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

15 And many among them shall stumble and fall and be broken, and be snared and be taken.”

16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

17 And I will wait upon the Lord, who hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him.

18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwelleth in Mount Zion.

19 And when they shall say unto you, “Seek unto those who have familiar spirits and wizards, who peep and who mutter,” should not a people seek unto their God? For the living, to the dead?

20 To the law and to the testimony! If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

21 And they shall pass through it sorely beset and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves and curse their king and their God, and look upward;

22 and they shall look unto the earth and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish, and they shall be driven to darkness.

Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first He lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward more grievously afflicted her by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Thou hast multiplied the nation and not increased the joy; they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For Thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise and garments rolled in blood, but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon His Kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

And all the people shall know—even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria” that say in the pride and stoutness of heart:

10 “The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.”

11 Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him and join his enemies together,

12 the Syrians before and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

13 For the people turneth not unto Him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.

14 Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

15 The ancient and honorable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, and they that are led by them are destroyed.

17 Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows; for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire; it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother.

20 And he shall snatch on the right hand and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied; they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm.

21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

10 “Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed

to turn aside the needy from judgment and to take away the right from the poor of My people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help? And where will ye leave your glory?

Without Me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain.” For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

“Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of Mine anger, and the staff in their hand is Mine indignation!

I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of My wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Yet he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

For he saith, ‘Are not my princes altogether kings?

Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols and whose graven images excelled them of Jerusalem and of Samaria,

11 shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?’”

12 Therefore it shall come to pass when the Lord hath performed His whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem: “I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria and the glory of his high looks.

13 For he saith, “‘By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; and I have removed the bounds of the people and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.

14 And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people, and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.’”

15 Shall the ax boast itself against him that heweth therewith? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood!

16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among His fat ones leanness; and under His glory He shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

17 And the Light of Israel shall be for a fire and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day,

18 and shall consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.

19 And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

20 And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again depend upon him that smote them, but shall stand upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return; the consuming decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

23 For the Lord God of hosts shall cause a consuming, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

24 Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts: “O My people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian. He shall smite thee with a rod and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

25 For yet a very little while and the indignation shall cease, and Mine anger in their destruction.”

26 And the Lord of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and as His rod was upon the sea, so shall He lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

28 He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his baggage.

29 They are gone over the passage; they have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30 Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim; cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth.

31 Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.

32 As yet shall he remain at Nob that day; he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

34 And He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

A man will seize one of his brothers
in his father’s house, and say,
“You have a cloak, you be our leader;
take charge of this heap of ruins!”
But in that day(M) he will cry out,
    “I have no remedy.(N)
I have no food(O) or clothing in my house;
do not make me the leader of the people.”(P)

Jerusalem staggers,
    Judah is falling;(Q)
their words(R) and deeds(S) are against the Lord,
    defying(T) his glorious presence.
The look on their faces testifies(U) against them;
they parade their sin like Sodom;(V)
    they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
They have brought disaster(W) upon themselves.

10 Tell the righteous it will be well(X) with them,
for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.(Y)
11 Woe to the wicked!(Z)
    Disaster(AA) is upon them!
They will be paid back(AB)
for what their hands have done.(AC)

12 Youths(AD) oppress my people,
    women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you astray;(AE)
they turn you from the path.

13 The Lord takes his place in court;(AF)
he rises to judge(AG) the people.
14 The Lord enters into judgment(AH)
against the elders and leaders of his people:
“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
the plunder(AI) from the poor(AJ) is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing my people(AK)
and grinding(AL) the faces of the poor?”(AM)
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.(AN)

16 The Lord says,
“The women of Zion(AO) are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,(AP)
    flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
the Lord will make their scalps bald.(AQ)

18 In that day(AR) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,(AS) 19 the earrings and bracelets(AT) and veils,(AU) 20 the headdresses(AV) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, 21 the signet rings and nose rings,(AW) 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,(AX) the purses 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments(AY) and tiaras(AZ) and shawls.

24 Instead of fragrance(BA) there will be a stench;(BB)
    instead of a sash,(BC) a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;(BD)
    instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;(BE)
    instead of beauty,(BF) branding.(BG)
25 Your men will fall by the sword,(BH)
    your warriors in battle.(BI)
26 The gates(BJ) of Zion will lament and mourn;(BK)
destitute,(BL) she will sit on the ground.(BM)

In that day(BN) seven women
will take hold of one man(BO)
and say, “We will eat our own food(BP)
    and provide our own clothes;
only let us be called by your name.
    Take away our disgrace!”(BQ)

The Branch of the Lord

In that day(BR) the Branch of the Lord(BS) will be beautiful(BT) and glorious, and the fruit(BU) of the land will be the pride and glory(BV) of the survivors(BW) in Israel. Those who are left in Zion,(BX) who remain(BY) in Jerusalem, will be called holy,(BZ) all who are recorded(CA) among the living in Jerusalem. The Lord will wash away the filth(CB) of the women of Zion;(CC) he will cleanse(CD) the bloodstains(CE) from Jerusalem by a spirit[a] of judgment(CF) and a spirit[b] of fire.(CG) Then the Lord will create(CH) over all of Mount Zion(CI) and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night;(CJ) over everything the glory[c](CK) will be a canopy.(CL) It will be a shelter(CM) and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge(CN) and hiding place from the storm(CO) and rain.

The Song of the Vineyard

I will sing for the one I love
    a song about his vineyard:(CP)
My loved one had a vineyard
    on a fertile hillside.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones
and planted it with the choicest vines.(CQ)
He built a watchtower(CR) in it
and cut out a winepress(CS) as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.(CT)

“Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.(CU)
What more could have been done for my vineyard
than I have done for it?(CV)
When I looked for good grapes,
why did it yield only bad?(CW)
Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
    and it will be destroyed;(CX)
I will break down its wall,(CY)
    and it will be trampled.(CZ)
I will make it a wasteland,(DA)
    neither pruned nor cultivated,
and briers and thorns(DB) will grow there.
I will command the clouds
    not to rain(DC) on it.”

The vineyard(DD) of the Lord Almighty
    is the nation of Israel,
and the people of Judah
are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice,(DE) but saw bloodshed;
for righteousness,(DF) but heard cries of distress.(DG)

Woes and Judgments

Woe(DH) to you who add house to house
    and join field to field(DI)
till no space is left
and you live alone in the land.

The Lord Almighty(DJ) has declared in my hearing:(DK)

“Surely the great houses will become desolate,(DL)
the fine mansions left without occupants.
10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath[d] of wine;
a homer[e] of seed will yield only an ephah[f] of grain.”(DM)

11 Woe(DN) to those who rise early in the morning
    to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.(DO)
12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes(DP) and timbrels(DQ) and wine,
but they have no regard(DR) for the deeds of the Lord,
no respect for the work of his hands.(DS)
13 Therefore my people will go into exile(DT)
    for lack of understanding;(DU)
those of high rank(DV) will die of hunger
and the common people will be parched with thirst.(DW)
14 Therefore Death(DX) expands its jaws,
    opening wide its mouth;(DY)
into it will descend their nobles and masses
with all their brawlers and revelers.(DZ)
15 So people will be brought low(EA)
    and everyone humbled,(EB)
the eyes of the arrogant(EC) humbled.
16 But the Lord Almighty will be exalted(ED) by his justice,(EE)
and the holy God will be proved holy(EF) by his righteous acts.
17 Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture;(EG)
lambs will feed[g] among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe(EH) to those who draw sin along with cords(EI) of deceit,
and wickedness(EJ) as with cart ropes,
19 to those who say, “Let God hurry;
    let him hasten(EK) his work
    so we may see it.
The plan of the Holy One(EL) of Israel—
let it approach, let it come into view,
    so we may know it.”(EM)

20 Woe(EN) to those who call evil good(EO)
    and good evil,(EP)
who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,(EQ)
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter.(ER)

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes(ES)
and clever in their own sight.

22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine(ET)
    and champions at mixing drinks,(EU)
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,(EV)
but deny justice(EW) to the innocent.(EX)
24 Therefore, as tongues of fire(EY) lick up straw(EZ)
and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay(FA)
and their flowers blow away like dust;(FB)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
and spurned the word(FC) of the Holy One(FD) of Israel.
25 Therefore the Lord’s anger(FE) burns against his people;
his hand is raised and he strikes them down.
The mountains shake,(FF)
and the dead bodies(FG) are like refuse(FH) in the streets.(FI)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(FJ)
    his hand is still upraised.(FK)

26 He lifts up a banner(FL) for the distant nations,
he whistles(FM) for those at the ends of the earth.(FN)
Here they come,
    swiftly and speedily!
27 Not one of them grows tired(FO) or stumbles,
    not one slumbers or sleeps;
not a belt(FP) is loosened at the waist,(FQ)
not a sandal strap is broken.(FR)
28 Their arrows are sharp,(FS)
    all their bows(FT) are strung;
their horses’ hooves(FU) seem like flint,
their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.(FV)
29 Their roar is like that of the lion,(FW)
    they roar like young lions;
they growl as they seize(FX) their prey
and carry it off with no one to rescue.(FY)
30 In that day(FZ) they will roar over it
like the roaring of the sea.(GA)
And if one looks at the land,
there is only darkness(GB) and distress;(GC)
even the sun will be darkened(GD) by clouds.

Isaiah’s Commission

In the year that King Uzziah(GE) died,(GF) I saw the Lord,(GG) high and exalted,(GH) seated on a throne;(GI) and the train of his robe(GJ) filled the temple. Above him were seraphim,(GK) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,(GL) and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy(GM), holy is the Lord Almighty;(GN)
the whole earth(GO) is full of his glory.”(GP)

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.(GQ)

“Woe(GR) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!(GS) For I am a man of unclean lips,(GT) and I live among a people of unclean lips,(GU) and my eyes have seen(GV) the King,(GW) the Lord Almighty.”(GX)

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal(GY) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;(GZ) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.(HA)

Then I heard the voice(HB) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?(HC) And who will go for us?(HD)

And I said, “Here am I.(HE) Send me!”

He said, “Go(HF) and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(HG)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(HH)
    make their ears dull
    and close their eyes.[h](HI)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,(HJ)
    understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(HK)

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(HL)

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined(HM)
    and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(HN)
and the fields ruined and ravaged,(HO)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(HP)
and the land is utterly forsaken.(HQ)
13 And though a tenth remains(HR) in the land,
it will again be laid waste.(HS)
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps(HT) when they are cut down,
so the holy(HU) seed will be the stump in the land.”(HV)

The Sign of Immanuel

When Ahaz(HW) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(HX) of Aram(HY) and Pekah(HZ) son of Remaliah(IA) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

Now the house of David(IB) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[i] Ephraim(IC)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(ID) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[j](IE) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(IF) Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(IG) and don’t be afraid.(IH) Do not lose heart(II) because of these two smoldering stubs(IJ) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(IK) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(IL) Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(IM) son have plotted(IN) your ruin, saying, “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(IO)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,(IP)
for the head of Aram is Damascus,(IQ)
and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(IR)
Within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be too shattered(IS) to be a people.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(IT)
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(IU) firm in your faith,(IV)
you will not stand at all.’”(IW)

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(IX) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(IY)

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(IZ)

13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(JA) Is it not enough(JB) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(JC) of my God(JD) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[k] a sign:(JE) The virgin[l](JF) will conceive and give birth to a son,(JG) and[m] will call him Immanuel.[n](JH) 15 He will be eating curds(JI) and honey(JJ) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(JK) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(JL) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(JM) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(JN) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(JO)

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

18 In that day(JP) the Lord will whistle(JQ) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(JR) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(JS) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(JT) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(JU) the Lord will use(JV) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(JW)—the king of Assyria(JX)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(JY) also.(JZ) 21 In that day,(KA) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(KB) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(KC) and honey.(KD) 23 In that day,(KE) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[o](KF) there will be only briers and thorns.(KG) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(KH) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(KI) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(KJ) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(KK)

Isaiah and His Children as Signs

The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(KL) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[p](KM) So I called in Uriah(KN) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(KO) for me. Then I made love to the prophetess,(KP) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(KQ) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(KR) For before the boy knows(KS) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(KT) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(KU)

The Lord spoke to me again:

“Because this people has rejected(KV)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(KW)
and rejoices over Rezin
    and the son of Remaliah,(KX)
therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(KY) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(KZ) with all his pomp.(LA)
It will overflow all its channels,
    run over all its banks(LB)
and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(LC)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(LD) will cover the breadth of your land,
    Immanuel[q]!”(LE)

Raise the war cry,[r](LF) you nations, and be shattered!(LG)
    Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(LH) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(LI)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(LJ)
    for God is with us.[s](LK)

11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(LL) warning me not to follow(LM) the way of this people:

12 “Do not call conspiracy(LN)
    everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(LO)
    and do not dread it.(LP)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(LQ)
he is the one you are to fear,(LR)
he is the one you are to dread.(LS)
14 He will be a holy place;(LT)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(LU) that causes people to stumble(LV)
and a rock that makes them fall.(LW)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
    a trap and a snare.(LX)
15 Many of them will stumble;(LY)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”

16 Bind up this testimony of warning(LZ)
and seal(MA) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(MB) for the Lord,
who is hiding(MC) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(MD)

18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(ME) We are signs(MF) and symbols(MG) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(MH)

The Darkness Turns to Light

19 When someone tells you to consult(MI) mediums and spiritists,(MJ) who whisper and mutter,(MK) should not a people inquire(ML) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(MM) and the testimony of warning.(MN) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(MO) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(MP) they will roam through the land;(MQ) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(MR) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(MS) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(MT)

[t]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(MU) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(MV) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness(MW)
    have seen a great light;(MX)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(MY)
    a light has dawned.(MZ)
You have enlarged the nation(NA)
    and increased their joy;(NB)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.(NC)
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(ND)
    you have shattered(NE)
the yoke(NF) that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,(NG)
    the rod of their oppressor.(NH)
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(NI)
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,(NJ)
to us a son is given,(NK)
and the government(NL) will be on his shoulders.(NM)
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor,(NN) Mighty God,(NO)
    Everlasting(NP) Father,(NQ) Prince of Peace.(NR)
Of the greatness of his government(NS) and peace(NT)
    there will be no end.(NU)
He will reign(NV) on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice(NW) and righteousness(NX)
from that time on and forever.(NY)
The zeal(NZ) of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a message(OA) against Jacob;
    it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it—
Ephraim(OB) and the inhabitants of Samaria(OC)
who say with pride
    and arrogance(OD) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(OE)
the fig(OF) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(OG)
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(OH) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(OI) from the east and Philistines(OJ) from the west
have devoured(OK) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger(OL) is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(OM)

13 But the people have not returned(ON) to him who struck(OO) them,
nor have they sought(OP) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(OQ) in a single day;(OR)
15 the elders(OS) and dignitaries(OT) are the head,
the prophets(OU) who teach lies(OV) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(OW) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(OX)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(OY)
nor will he pity(OZ) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(PA) and wicked,(PB)
    every mouth speaks folly.(PC)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(PD)

18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(PE)
    it consumes briers and thorns,(PF)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(PG)
so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(PH) of the Lord Almighty
    the land will be scorched(PI)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(PJ)
they will not spare one another.(PK)
20 On the right they will devour,
    but still be hungry;(PL)
on the left they will eat,(PM)
    but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[u]:
21     Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(PN)
together they will turn against Judah.(PO)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(PP)

10 Woe(PQ) to those who make unjust laws,
to those who issue oppressive decrees,(PR)
to deprive(PS) the poor of their rights
and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,(PT)
making widows their prey
    and robbing the fatherless.(PU)
What will you do on the day of reckoning,(PV)
    when disaster(PW) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?(PX)
Where will you leave your riches?
Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives(PY)
    or fall among the slain.(PZ)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(QA)
    his hand is still upraised.

God’s Judgment on Assyria

“Woe(QB) to the Assyrian,(QC) the rod(QD) of my anger,
in whose hand is the club(QE) of my wrath!(QF)
I send him against a godless(QG) nation,
    I dispatch(QH) him against a people who anger me,(QI)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,(QJ)
and to trample(QK) them down like mud in the streets.
But this is not what he intends,(QL)
    this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
to put an end to many nations.
‘Are not my commanders(QM) all kings?’ he says.
‘Has not Kalno(QN) fared like Carchemish?(QO)
Is not Hamath(QP) like Arpad,(QQ)
    and Samaria(QR) like Damascus?(QS)
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,(QT)
kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?(QU)’”

12 When the Lord has finished all his work(QV) against Mount Zion(QW) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria(QX) for the willful pride(QY) of his heart and the haughty look(QZ) in his eyes. 13 For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand(RA) I have done this,(RB)
and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;(RC)
    like a mighty one I subdued[v] their kings.(RD)
14 As one reaches into a nest,(RE)
    so my hand reached for the wealth(RF) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
so I gathered all the countries;(RG)
not one flapped a wing,
or opened its mouth to chirp.(RH)’”

15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
or the saw boast against the one who uses it?(RI)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
or a club(RJ) brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will send a wasting disease(RK) upon his sturdy warriors;(RL)
under his pomp(RM) a fire(RN) will be kindled
    like a blazing flame.
17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,(RO)
    their Holy One(RP) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
    his thorns(RQ) and his briers.(RR)
18 The splendor of his forests(RS) and fertile fields
    it will completely destroy,(RT)
as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(RU) will be so few(RV)
that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day(RW) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors(RX) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(RY) on him
    who struck them down(RZ)
but will truly rely(SA) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.(SB)
21 A remnant(SC) will return,[w](SD) a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.(SE)
22 Though your people be like the sand(SF) by the sea, Israel,
    only a remnant will return.(SG)
Destruction has been decreed,(SH)
    overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed(SI) upon the whole land.(SJ)

24 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“My people who live in Zion,(SK)
do not be afraid(SL) of the Assyrians,
who beat(SM) you with a rod(SN)
and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 Very soon(SO) my anger against you will end
and my wrath(SP) will be directed to their destruction.(SQ)

26 The Lord Almighty will lash(SR) them with a whip,
    as when he struck down Midian(SS) at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff(ST) over the waters,(SU)
    as he did in Egypt.
27 In that day(SV) their burden(SW) will be lifted from your shoulders,
    their yoke(SX) from your neck;(SY)
the yoke(SZ) will be broken
because you have grown so fat.[x]

28 They enter Aiath;
    they pass through Migron;(TA)
    they store supplies(TB) at Mikmash.(TC)
29 They go over the pass, and say,
