Conflict with people and God

What is the source of conflict among you? What is the source of your disputes? Don’t they come from your cravings that are at war in your own lives? You long for something you don’t have, so you commit murder. You are jealous for something you can’t get, so you struggle and fight. You don’t have because you don’t ask. You ask and don’t have because you ask with evil intentions, to waste it on your own cravings.

You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the world's friend becomes God's enemy. Or do you suppose that scripture is meaningless? Doesn’t God long for our faithfulness in[a] the life he has given to us?[b] But he gives us more grace. This is why it says, God stands against the proud, but favors the humble.[c] Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. Cry out in sorrow, mourn, and weep! Let your laughter become mourning and your joy become sadness. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

11 Brothers and sisters, don’t say evil things about each other. Whoever insults or criticizes a brother or sister insults and criticizes the Law. If you find fault with the Law, you are not a doer of the Law but a judge over it. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, and he is able to save and to destroy. But you who judge your neighbor, who are you?

Warning the proud and wealthy

13 Pay attention, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such-and-such a town. We will stay there a year, buying and selling, and making a profit.” 14 You don’t really know about tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for only a short while before it vanishes. 15 Here’s what you ought to say: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast and brag, and all such boasting is evil. 17 It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn’t do it.

Pay attention, you wealthy people! Weep and moan over the miseries coming upon you. Your riches have rotted. Moths have destroyed your clothes. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you. It will eat your flesh like fire. Consider the treasure you have hoarded in the last days. Listen! Hear the cries of the wages of your field hands. These are the wages you stole from those who harvested your fields. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of heavenly forces. You have lived a self-satisfying life on this earth, a life of luxury. You have stuffed your hearts in preparation for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who doesn’t oppose you.

Courageous patience

Therefore, brothers and sisters, you must be patient as you wait for the coming of the Lord. Consider the farmer who waits patiently for the coming of rain in the fall and spring, looking forward to the precious fruit of the earth. You also must wait patiently, strengthening your resolve, because the coming of the Lord is near. Don’t complain about each other, brothers and sisters, so that you won’t be judged. Look! The judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as an example of patient resolve and steadfastness. 11 Look at how we honor those who have practiced endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job. And you have seen what the Lord has accomplished, for the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Final instructions

12 Most important, my brothers and sisters, never make a solemn pledge—neither by heaven nor earth, nor by anything else. Instead, speak with a simple “Yes” or “No,” or else you may fall under judgment.

13 If any of you are suffering, they should pray. If any of you are happy, they should sing. 14 If any of you are sick, they should call for the elders of the church, and the elders should pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Prayer that comes from faith will heal the sick, for the Lord will restore them to health. And if they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 For this reason, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous person is powerful in what it can achieve. 17 Elijah was a person just like us. When he earnestly prayed that it wouldn’t rain, no rain fell for three and a half years. 18 He prayed again, God sent rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

19 My brothers and sisters, if any of you wander from the truth and someone turns back the wanderer, 20 recognize that whoever brings a sinner back from the wrong path will save them from death and will bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

Greeting

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To God’s chosen strangers in the world of the diaspora, who live in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.

God the Father chose you because of what he knew beforehand. He chose you through the Holy Spirit’s work of making you holy and because of the faithful obedience and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

May God’s grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Thanksgiving

May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! On account of his vast mercy, he has given us new birth. You have been born anew into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. You have a pure and enduring inheritance that cannot perish—an inheritance that is presently kept safe in heaven for you. Through his faithfulness, you are guarded by God’s power so that you can receive the salvation he is ready to reveal in the last time.

You now rejoice in this hope, even if it’s necessary for you to be distressed for a short time by various trials. This is necessary so that your faith may be found genuine. (Your faith is more valuable than gold, which will be destroyed even though it is itself tested by fire.) Your genuine faith will result in praise, glory, and honor for you when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you’ve never seen him, you love him. Even though you don’t see him now, you trust him and so rejoice with a glorious joy that is too much for words. You are receiving the goal of your faith: your salvation.

10 The prophets, who long ago foretold the grace that you’ve received, searched and explored, inquiring carefully about this salvation. 11 They wondered what the Spirit of Christ within them was saying when he bore witness beforehand about the suffering that would happen to Christ and the glory that would follow. They wondered what sort of person or what sort of time they were speaking about. 12 It was revealed to them that in their search they were not serving themselves but you. These things, which even angels long to examine, have now been proclaimed to you by those who brought you the good news. They did this in the power of the Holy Spirit, who was sent from heaven.

Response of obedience

13 Therefore, once you have your minds ready for action and you are thinking clearly, place your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 Don’t be conformed to your former desires, those that shaped you when you were ignorant. But, as obedient children, 15 you must be holy in every aspect of your lives, just as the one who called you is holy. 16 It is written, You will be holy, because I am holy.[d] 17 Since you call upon a Father who judges all people according to their actions without favoritism, you should conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your dwelling in a strange land. 18 Live in this way, knowing that you were not liberated by perishable things like silver or gold from the empty lifestyle you inherited from your ancestors. 19 Instead, you were liberated by the precious blood of Christ, like that of a flawless, spotless lamb. 20 Christ was chosen before the creation of the world, but was only revealed at the end of time. This was done for you, 21 who through Christ are faithful to the God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory. So now, your faith and hope should rest in God.

22 As you set yourselves apart by your obedience to the truth so that you might have genuine affection for your fellow believers, love each other deeply and earnestly. 23 Do this because you have been given new birth—not from the type of seed that decays but from seed that doesn’t. This seed is God’s life-giving and enduring word. 24 Thus,

All human life on the earth is like grass,
and all human glory is like a flower in a field.
The grass dries up and its flower falls off,
25         but the Lord’s word endures forever.[e]

This is the word that was proclaimed to you as good news.

Submit Yourselves to God

What causes fights and quarrels(A) among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle(B) within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill.(C) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive,(D) because you ask with wrong motives,(E) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous(F) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(G) means enmity against God?(H) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(I) Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(J) But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[c](K)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(L) and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.(M) Wash your hands,(N) you sinners, and purify your hearts,(O) you double-minded.(P) Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.(Q) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.(R)

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.(S) Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[d] or judges them(T) speaks against the law(U) and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it,(V) but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge,(W) the one who is able to save and destroy.(X) But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?(Y)

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Now listen,(Z) you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”(AA) 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.(AB) 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will,(AC) we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.(AD) 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.(AE)

Warning to Rich Oppressors

Now listen,(AF) you rich people,(AG) weep and wail(AH) because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.(AI) Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.(AJ) Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers(AK) who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries(AL) of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.(AM) You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves(AN) in the day of slaughter.[e](AO) You have condemned and murdered(AP) the innocent one,(AQ) who was not opposing you.

Patience in Suffering

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.(AR) See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting(AS) for the autumn and spring rains.(AT) You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming(AU) is near.(AV) Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters,(AW) or you will be judged. The Judge(AX) is standing at the door!(AY)

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets(AZ) who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed(BA) those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance(BB) and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.(BC) The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.(BD)

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.(BE)

The Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.(BF) Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.(BG) 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders(BH) of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil(BI) in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith(BJ) will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins(BK) to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.(BL) The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.(BM)

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are.(BN) He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.(BO) 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.(BP)

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth(BQ) and someone should bring that person back,(BR) 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save(BS) them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.(BT)

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,(BU)

To God’s elect,(BV) exiles(BW) scattered(BX) throughout the provinces of Pontus,(BY) Galatia,(BZ) Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,(CA) who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge(CB) of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit,(CC) to be obedient(CD) to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:(CE)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance.(CF)

Praise to God for a Living Hope

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!(CG) In his great mercy(CH) he has given us new birth(CI) into a living hope(CJ) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,(CK) and into an inheritance(CL) that can never perish, spoil or fade.(CM) This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,(CN) who through faith are shielded by God’s power(CO) until the coming of the salvation(CP) that is ready to be revealed(CQ) in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice,(CR) though now for a little while(CS) you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.(CT) These have come so that the proven genuineness(CU) of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire(CV)—may result in praise, glory and honor(CW) when Jesus Christ is revealed.(CX) Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him(CY) and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.(CZ)

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke(DA) of the grace that was to come to you,(DB) searched intently and with the greatest care,(DC) 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ(DD) in them was pointing when he predicted(DE) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,(DF) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you(DG) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(DH) Even angels long to look into these things.

Be Holy

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,(DI) set your hope(DJ) on the grace to be brought to you(DK) when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.(DL) 14 As obedient(DM) children, do not conform(DN) to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.(DO) 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(DP) 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[f](DQ)

17 Since you call on a Father(DR) who judges each person’s work(DS) impartially,(DT) live out your time as foreigners(DU) here in reverent fear.(DV) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(DW) from the empty way of life(DX) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(DY) of Christ, a lamb(DZ) without blemish or defect.(EA) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(EB) but was revealed in these last times(EC) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(ED) who raised him from the dead(EE) and glorified him,(EF) and so your faith and hope(EG) are in God.

22 Now that you have purified(EH) yourselves by obeying(EI) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(EJ) from the heart.[g] 23 For you have been born again,(EK) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(EL) through the living and enduring word of God.(EM) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[h](EN)

And this is the word that was preached to you.
