17 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile; 18 and behold, seven cows, [a]fat and fine-looking came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass. 19 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very [b]ugly and [c]thin, such as I had never seen for [d]ugliness in all the land of Egypt; 20 and the thin and ugly cows ate the first seven fat cows. 21 Yet when they had [e]devoured them, it could not be [f]detected that they had [g]devoured them, [h]for they were just as ugly as [i]before. Then I awoke. 22 I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears of grain, full and good, came up on a single stalk; 23 and behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind sprouted up after them; 24 and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then (A)I told it to the soothsayer priests, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”

25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s [j]dreams are one and the same; (B)God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the [k]dreams are one and the same. 27 The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind (C)will be seven years of famine. 28 [l]It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: (D)God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. 29 Behold, (E)seven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt; 30 and after them (F)seven years of famine will [m]come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will [n]ravage the land. 31 So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe. 32 Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that (G)the matter is confirmed by God, and God will quickly bring it about. 33 So now let Pharaoh look for a man (H)discerning and wise, and appoint him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers [o]in charge of the land, and let him take a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt as a tax in the seven years of abundance. 35 Then have them (I)collect all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and have them guard it. 36 Let the food be used as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”

37 Now the [p]proposal seemed good [q]to Pharaoh and [r]to all his servants.

Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt

38 Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, (J)in whom there is a divine spirit?” 39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one as (K)discerning and wise as you are. 40 (L)You shall be [s]in charge of my house, and all my people shall [t]be obedient to you; only regarding the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “See, I have placed you (M)over all the land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh (N)took off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and (O)put the gold necklace around his neck. 43 And he had him ride in [u]his second chariot; and they proclaimed ahead of him, “[v]Bow the knee!” And he placed him over all the land of Egypt. 44 Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Though I am Pharaoh, yet (P)without [w]your permission no one shall raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” 45 Then Pharaoh named Joseph [x]Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of [y](Q)On, to be his wife. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

46 Now Joseph was (R)thirty years old when he [z]stood in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt. 47 During the seven years of plenty the land produced [aa]abundantly. 48 So he collected all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and put the food in the cities; he put in every city the food from its own surrounding fields. 49 Joseph stored up grain [ab]in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped [ac]measuring it, for it was [ad]beyond measure.

The Sons of Joseph

50 Now before the year of famine came, (S)two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of [ae]On, bore to him. 51 Joseph named the firstborn [af]Manasseh; “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all of my father’s household.” 52 And he named the second [ag]Ephraim; “For,” he said, “(T)God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 When the seven years of plenty which had taken place in the land of Egypt came to an end, 54 and (U)the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt suffered famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; (V)whatever he says to you, you shall do.” 56 When the famine was spread over the entire face of the earth, then Joseph opened all [ah]the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. 57 Then the people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because (W)the famine was severe in all the earth.

Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt

42 Now (X)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?” Then he said, “Look, (Y)I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from [ai]that place, (Z)so that we may live and not die.” So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother (AA)Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “(AB)I am afraid that harm may happen to him.” So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, (AC)because the famine was also in the land of Canaan.

Now (AD)Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (AE)bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and (AF)spoke to them harshly. He said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although (AG)they did not recognize him. And Joseph (AH)remembered the dreams which he [aj]had about them, and he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to look at the [ak]undefended parts of our land.” 10 And they said to him, “No, (AI)my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man; we are (AJ)honest men, your servants are not spies.” 12 Yet he said to them, “No, but you have come to look at the [al]undefended parts of our land!” 13 But they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with (AK)our father today, and (AL)one is no longer alive.” 14 Yet Joseph said to them, “It is as I said [am]to you, you are spies; 15 by this you will be tested: (AM)by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here! 16 Send one of you and have him get your brother, while you remain confined, so that your words may be tested, whether there is (AN)truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, you are certainly spies!” 17 So he put them all together in (AO)prison for three days.

17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile,(A) 18 when out of the river there came up seven cows, fat and sleek, and they grazed among the reeds.(B) 19 After them, seven other cows came up—scrawny and very ugly and lean. I had never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt. 20 The lean, ugly cows ate up the seven fat cows that came up first. 21 But even after they ate them, no one could tell that they had done so; they looked just as ugly as before. Then I woke up.

22 “In my dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, growing on a single stalk. 23 After them, seven other heads sprouted—withered and thin and scorched by the east wind. 24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me.(C)

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same.(D) God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.(E) 26 The seven good cows(F) are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream. 27 The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.(G)

28 “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.(H) 29 Seven years of great abundance(I) are coming throughout the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine(J) will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.(K) 31 The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. 32 The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided(L) by God, and God will do it soon.(M)

33 “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man(N) and put him in charge of the land of Egypt.(O) 34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners(P) over the land to take a fifth(Q) of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.(R) 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food.(S) 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt,(T) so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

37 The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials.(U) 38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God[a]?”(V)

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you,(W) there is no one so discerning and wise as you.(X) 40 You shall be in charge of my palace,(Y) and all my people are to submit to your orders.(Z) Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.(AA)

Joseph in Charge of Egypt

41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”(AB) 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring(AC) from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes(AD) of fine linen(AE) and put a gold chain around his neck.(AF) 43 He had him ride in a chariot(AG) as his second-in-command,[b](AH) and people shouted before him, “Make way[c]!”(AI) Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt.(AJ)

44 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your word no one will lift hand or foot in all Egypt.”(AK) 45 Pharaoh gave Joseph(AL) the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest(AM) of On,[d](AN) to be his wife.(AO) And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt.

46 Joseph was thirty years old(AP) when he entered the service(AQ) of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt. 47 During the seven years of abundance(AR) the land produced plentifully. 48 Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities.(AS) In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it. 49 Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea;(AT) it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.

50 Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.(AU) 51 Joseph named his firstborn(AV) Manasseh[e](AW) and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” 52 The second son he named Ephraim[f](AX) and said, “It is because God has made me fruitful(AY) in the land of my suffering.”

53 The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end, 54 and the seven years of famine(AZ) began,(BA) just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in the whole land of Egypt there was food. 55 When all Egypt began to feel the famine,(BB) the people cried to Pharaoh for food. Then Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph and do what he tells you.”(BC)

56 When the famine had spread over the whole country, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians,(BD) for the famine(BE) was severe throughout Egypt.(BF) 57 And all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph,(BG) because the famine was severe everywhere.(BH)

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

42 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt,(BI) he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?” He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us,(BJ) so that we may live and not die.”(BK)

Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain(BL) from Egypt. But Jacob did not send Benjamin,(BM) Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.(BN) So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain,(BO) for there was famine in the land of Canaan(BP) also.(BQ)

Now Joseph was the governor of the land,(BR) the person who sold grain to all its people.(BS) So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.(BT) As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them.(BU) “Where do you come from?”(BV) he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.(BW) Then he remembered his dreams(BX) about them and said to them, “You are spies!(BY) You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”(BZ)

10 “No, my lord,(CA)” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.(CB) 11 We are all the sons of one man. Your servants(CC) are honest men,(CD) not spies.(CE)

12 “No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”(CF)

13 But they replied, “Your servants(CG) were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan.(CH) The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”(CI)

14 Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!(CJ) 15 And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives,(CK) you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.(CL) 16 Send one of your number to get your brother;(CM) the rest of you will be kept in prison,(CN) so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth.(CO) If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!(CP) 17 And he put them all in custody(CQ) for three days.

Weeds among Wheat

24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, (A)The kingdom of heaven [a]is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed [b]weeds among the wheat, and left. 26 And when the [c]wheat sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also became evident. 27 And the slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? [d]How then does it have weeds?’ 28 And he said to them, ‘[e]An enemy has done this!’ The slaves *said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he *said, ‘No; while you are gathering up the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and at the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them; but (B)gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

The Mustard Seed

31 He presented another parable to them, saying, (C)The kingdom of heaven is like (D)a mustard seed, which a person took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is smaller than all the other seeds, but when it is fully grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that (E)the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”

The Leaven

33 He spoke another parable to them: (F)The kingdom of heaven is like [f]leaven, which a woman took and hid in (G)three [g]sata of flour until it was all leavened.”

34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak anything to them (H)without a parable. 35 This was so that what was spoken through the prophet would be [h]fulfilled:

(I)I will open My mouth in parables;
I will proclaim things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

The Weeds Explained

36 Then He left the crowds and went into (J)the house. And His disciples came to Him and said, “(K)Explain to us the parable of the [i]weeds of the field.” 37 And He said, “The one who sows the good seed is (L)the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are (M)the sons of the kingdom; and the weeds are (N)the sons of (O)the evil one; 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is (P)the [j]end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 So just as the weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at (Q)the [k]end of the age. 41 (R)The Son of Man (S)will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom [l]all (T)stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and they (U)will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place (V)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 (W)Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. (X)The one who has ears, [m]let him hear.

Hidden Treasure

44 (Y)The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from [n]joy over it he goes and (Z)sells everything that he has, and buys that field.

A Costly Pearl

45 “Again, (AA)the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Weeds

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(A) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(B)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(C)(D)

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(E) a mustard seed,(F) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(G)

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(H) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour(I) until it worked all through the dough.”(J)

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(K) 35 So was fulfilled(L) what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables,
    I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[b](M)

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(N) of the weeds in the field.”

37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(O) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(P) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(Q) is the end of the age,(R) and the harvesters are angels.(S)

40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(T) will send out his angels,(U) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(V) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(W) in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.(X)

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(Y) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(Z)

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AA) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

The Lord Praised for Rescuing David.

For the music director. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, [a]who spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day that the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,

18 “I love You, Lord, (A)my strength.”
The Lord is (B)my rock and (C)my fortress and my (D)savior,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (E)shield and the (F)horn of my salvation, my (G)stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is (H)worthy to be praised,
And I am (I)saved from my enemies.

The (J)ropes of death encompassed me,
And the (K)torrents of [b]destruction [c]terrified me.
The (L)ropes of [d]Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
In my (M)distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (N)from His temple,
And my (O)cry for help before Him came into His ears.

Then the (P)earth shook and quaked;
And the (Q)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up [e]out of His nostrils,
And (R)fire from His mouth was devouring;
Coals burned from it.
He also (S)bowed the heavens down low, and came down
With thick (T)darkness under His feet.
10 He rode on a (U)cherub and flew;
And He sped on the (V)wings of the wind.
11 He made (W)darkness His hiding place, (X)His [f]canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds.
12 From the (Y)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (Z)coals of fire.
13 The Lord also (AA)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He (AB)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and [g]routed them.
15 Then the (AC)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were exposed
By Your (AD)rebuke, Lord,
At the blast of the (AE)breath of Your nostrils.

Psalm 18[a](A)

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

I love you, Lord, my strength.(B)

The Lord is my rock,(C) my fortress(D) and my deliverer;(E)
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,(F)
    my shield[b](G) and the horn[c] of my salvation,(H) my stronghold.

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(I)
    and I have been saved from my enemies.(J)
The cords of death(K) entangled me;
