Paul in Corinth

18 After these events Paul left (A)Athens and went to (B)Corinth. And he found a Jew named (C)Aquila, a native of (D)Pontus having recently come from (E)Italy with his wife (F)Priscilla, because (G)Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them, and (H)they worked together, for they were tent-makers by trade. And Paul was reasoning (I)in the synagogue every (J)Sabbath and trying to persuade (K)Jews and Greeks.

But when (L)Silas and Timothy (M)came down from (N)Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, (O)testifying to the Jews that (P)Jesus was the [a]Christ. But when they resisted and blasphemed, he (Q)shook out his garments and said to them, “Your (R)blood is [b]on your own heads! I am clean. From now on I will go (S)to the Gentiles.” Then he left [c]the synagogue and went to the house of a man named [d]Titius Justus, (T)a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. (U)Crispus, (V)the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord (W)together with his entire household; and many of the (X)Corinthians, as they listened to Paul, were believing and being baptized. And the Lord said to Paul by (Y)a vision at night, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent; 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city.” 11 And he settled there for a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

12 But while Gallio was (Z)proconsul of (AA)Achaia, (AB)the Jews rose up together against Paul and brought him before (AC)the [e]judgment seat, 13 saying, “This man is inciting the people to worship God contrary to (AD)the [f]law.” 14 But when Paul was about to (AE)open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or vicious, unscrupulous act, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you; 15 but if there are [g](AF)questions about [h]teaching and [i]persons and your own law, see to it yourselves; I am unwilling to be a judge of these matters.” 16 And he drove them away from (AG)the [j]judgment seat. 17 But they all took hold of (AH)Sosthenes, (AI)the leader of the synagogue, and began beating him in front of (AJ)the judgment seat. And yet Gallio was not concerned about any of these things.

18 Now Paul, when he had remained many days longer, (AK)took leave of (AL)the brothers and sisters and sailed away to (AM)Syria, and (AN)Priscilla and (AO)Aquila were with him. [k]Paul first (AP)had his hair cut at (AQ)Cenchrea, for he was keeping a vow. 19 They came to (AR)Ephesus, and he left them there. Now he himself entered (AS)the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not consent, 21 but (AT)took leave of them and said, “I will return to you again (AU)if God wills,” and he set sail from (AV)Ephesus.

22 When he had landed in (AW)Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church, and went down to (AX)Antioch.

Third Missionary Journey

23 And after spending some time there, he left and passed successively through the (AY)Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

24 Now a Jew named (AZ)Apollos, an (BA)Alexandrian by birth, [l]an eloquent man, came to (BB)Ephesus; and he was proficient in the Scriptures. 25 This man had been instructed in (BC)the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was accurately speaking and teaching things about Jesus, being acquainted only with (BD)the baptism of John; 26 and [m]he began speaking boldly in the synagogue. But when (BE)Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained (BF)the way of God more accurately to him. 27 And when he wanted to go across to (BG)Achaia, (BH)the brothers encouraged him and wrote to (BI)the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly [n]helped those who had believed through grace, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating (BJ)by the Scriptures that (BK)Jesus was the [o]Christ.

Paul in Ephesus

19 Now it happened that while (BL)Apollos was in (BM)Corinth, Paul passed through the (BN)upper country and came to (BO)Ephesus, and found some disciples. He said to them, “(BP)Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, (BQ)we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “(BR)Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “(BS)John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people (BT)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were (BU)baptized [p]in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had (BV)laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began (BW)speaking with tongues and (BX)prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.

And he entered (BY)the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, having discussions and persuading them (BZ)about the kingdom of God. But when (CA)some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of [q](CB)the Way before the [r]people, he withdrew from them and took (CC)the disciples away with him, and had discussions daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 This took place for (CD)two years, so that all who lived in [s](CE)Asia heard (CF)the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Miracles at Ephesus

11 God was performing (CG)extraordinary [t]miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 (CH)so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and (CI)the evil spirits went out. 13 But also some of the Jewish (CJ)exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to [u]use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, “I order you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches!” 14 Now there were seven sons of [v]Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, doing this. 15 But the evil spirit responded and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know of Paul, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit, pounced on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known to all who lived in (CK)Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified. 18 Also many of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. 19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they added up the prices of [w]the books and found it to be fifty thousand [x](CL)pieces of silver. 20 So [y](CM)the word of the Lord (CN)was growing and prevailing mightily.

21 Now after these things were finished, Paul resolved in [z]the Spirit to (CO)go to Jerusalem (CP)after he had passed through (CQ)Macedonia and (CR)Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, (CS)I must also see Rome.” 22 And after he sent into (CT)Macedonia two of (CU)those who assisted him, (CV)Timothy and (CW)Erastus, he himself stayed in [aa](CX)Asia for a while.

23 About that time [ab]a major disturbance occurred in regard to [ac](CY)the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of [ad]Artemis, (CZ)was bringing [ae]considerable [af]business to the craftsmen; 25 he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity [ag]depends upon this business. 26 You see and hear that not only in (DA)Ephesus, but in almost all of [ah](DB)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that [ai](DC)gods made by hands are not gods at all. 27 Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess [aj]Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of [ak](DD)Asia and (DE)the [al]world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”

28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying, “Great is [am]Artemis of the (DF)Ephesians!” 29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging along (DG)Gaius and (DH)Aristarchus, Paul’s (DI)Macedonian traveling (DJ)companions. 30 And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, (DK)the disciples would not let him. 31 Also some of the [an]Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him and repeatedly urged him not to [ao]venture into the theater. 32 (DL)So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the [ap]assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know [aq]for what reason they had come together. 33 Some of the crowd [ar]concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having (DM)motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly. 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is [as]Artemis of the Ephesians!”

35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, “Men of (DN)Ephesus, what person is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great [at]Artemis and of the image which fell down from [au]the sky? 36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither (DO)temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and [av](DP)proconsuls are available; have them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the [aw]lawful [ax]assembly. 40 For indeed, we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s events, since there is no real reason for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering.” 41 After saying this he dismissed the [ay]assembly.

Paul in Macedonia and Greece

20 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for (DQ)the disciples, and when he had [az]encouraged them and taken his leave of them, he left (DR)to go to (DS)Macedonia. When he had gone through those regions and had given them much [ba]encouragement, he came to Greece. And there he spent three months, and when (DT)a plot was formed against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for (DU)Syria, he decided to return through (DV)Macedonia. And [bb]he was accompanied by Sopater of (DW)Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by (DX)Aristarchus and Secundus of the (DY)Thessalonians, and (DZ)Gaius of (EA)Derbe, and (EB)Timothy, and (EC)Tychicus and (ED)Trophimus of [bc](EE)Asia. Now these had gone on ahead and were waiting for (EF)us at (EG)Troas. (EH)We sailed from (EI)Philippi after [bd](EJ)the days of Unleavened Bread, and reached them at (EK)Troas within five days; and we stayed there for seven days.

On (EL)the first day of the week, when (EM)we were gathered together to (EN)break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his [be]message until midnight. There were many (EO)lamps in the (EP)upstairs room where we were gathered together. And there was a young man named [bf]Eutychus sitting [bg]on the window sill, sinking into a deep sleep; and as Paul kept on talking, Eutychus was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third floor, and was picked up dead. 10 But Paul went down and (EQ)fell upon him, and after embracing him, he (ER)said, “[bh]Do not be troubled, for [bi]he is still alive.” 11 When Paul had gone back up and had (ES)broken the bread and [bj]eaten, he talked with them a long while until daybreak, and then left. 12 They took away the boy alive, and were [bk]greatly comforted.

Troas to Miletus

13 But (ET)we went ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending from there to take Paul on board; for that was what he had arranged, intending himself to go [bl]by land. 14 And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. 15 Sailing from there, we arrived the following day opposite Chios; and the next day we crossed over to Samos, and on the following day we came to (EU)Miletus. 16 For Paul had decided to sail past (EV)Ephesus so that he would not have to lose time in [bm](EW)Asia; for he was hurrying, if it might be possible for him (EX)to be in Jerusalem (EY)the day of Pentecost.

Farewell to Ephesus

17 From Miletus he sent word to (EZ)Ephesus and called to himself (FA)the elders of the church. 18 And when they came to him, he said to them,

“You yourselves know, (FB)from the first day that I set foot in [bn]Asia, how I was with you the whole time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials which came upon me [bo]through (FC)the plots of the Jews; 20 how I (FD)did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was beneficial, and teaching you publicly and [bp]from house to house, 21 solemnly (FE)testifying to both Jews and Greeks of (FF)repentance toward God and (FG)faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, bound by the [bq]Spirit, (FH)I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that (FI)the Holy Spirit solemnly (FJ)testifies to me in every city, saying that (FK)chains and afflictions await me. 24 But (FL)I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may (FM)finish my course and (FN)the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to (FO)testify solemnly of the gospel of (FP)God’s grace.

25 “And now behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about (FQ)preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 26 Therefore, I [br]testify to you this day that (FR)I am [bs]innocent of the blood of all people. 27 For I (FS)did not shrink from declaring to you the whole (FT)purpose of God. 28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all (FU)the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you [bt]overseers, to shepherd (FV)the church of God which (FW)He [bu]purchased [bv]with His own blood. 29 I know that after my departure (FX)savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing (FY)the flock; 30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away (FZ)the disciples after them. 31 Therefore, be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of (GA)three years I did not cease to admonish each one (GB)with tears. 32 And now I (GC)entrust you to God and to (GD)the word of His grace, which is able to (GE)build you up and to give you (GF)the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 (GG)I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes. 34 You yourselves know that (GH)these hands served my own needs and the (GI)men who were with me. 35 In everything I showed you that by working hard in this way you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36 When he had said these things, he (GJ)knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And [bw]they all began to weep aloud and [bx](GK)embraced Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, 38 [by]grieving especially over (GL)the word which he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they were (GM)accompanying him to the ship.

Paul Sails from Miletus

21 Now when (GN)we had parted from them and had set sail, we ran (GO)a straight course to Cos, and on the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara; and having found a ship crossing over to (GP)Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail. When we came in sight of (GQ)Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we kept sailing to (GR)Syria and landed at (GS)Tyre; for the ship was to unload its cargo there. After looking up (GT)the disciples, we stayed there for seven days; and they kept telling Paul, [bz](GU)through the Spirit, not to set foot in Jerusalem. When [ca]our days there were ended, we left and started on our journey, while they all, with wives and children, (GV)escorted us until we were out of the city. After (GW)kneeling down on the beach and praying, we said farewell to one another. Then we boarded the ship, and they returned (GX)home.

When we had finished the voyage from (GY)Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and after greeting (GZ)the brothers and sisters, we stayed with them for a day. On the next day we left and came to (HA)Caesarea, and we entered the house of (HB)Philip the (HC)evangelist, who was (HD)one of the seven, and stayed with him. Now this man had four virgin daughters who were (HE)prophetesses. 10 As we were staying there for some days, a prophet named (HF)Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And he came to us and (HG)took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, “This (HH)is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will (HI)bind the man who owns this belt and (HJ)hand him over to the Gentiles.’” 12 When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him (HK)not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For (HL)I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die in Jerusalem for (HM)the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we became quiet, remarking, “(HN)The will of the Lord be done!”

Paul in Jerusalem

15 After these days we got ready and (HO)started on our way up to Jerusalem. 16 Some of (HP)the disciples from (HQ)Caesarea also came with us, taking us to Mnason of (HR)Cyprus, a (HS)disciple of long standing with whom we were to stay.

17 After we arrived in Jerusalem, (HT)the brothers and sisters received us gladly. 18 And the following day Paul went in with us to [cb](HU)James, and all (HV)the elders were present. 19 After he had greeted them, he (HW)began to relate one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his (HX)ministry. 20 And when they heard about them, they began (HY)glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many [cc]thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all (HZ)zealous for the Law; 21 and they have been told about you, that you are (IA)teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, telling them (IB)not to circumcise their children nor to [cd]walk according to (IC)the customs. 22 So what is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. 23 Therefore, do [ce]as we tell you: we have four men who (ID)have a [cf]vow upon themselves; 24 take them along and (IE)purify yourself together with them, and [cg]pay their expenses so that they may (IF)shave their [ch]heads; and then everyone will know that there is nothing to what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also conform, keeping the Law. 25 But regarding the Gentiles who have believed, we sent a letter, (IG)having decided that they should abstain from [ci]meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and what is [cj]strangled, and from sexual immorality.” 26 Then Paul [ck]took along the men, and the next day, after (IH)purifying himself together with them, he (II)went into the temple giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them.

Paul Seized in the Temple

27 When (IJ)the seven days were almost over, (IK)the Jews from [cl](IL)Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him, 28 crying out, “Men of Israel, help! (IM)This is the man who instructs everyone everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has (IN)defiled this holy place!” 29 For they had previously seen (IO)Trophimus the (IP)Ephesian in the city with him, and they thought that Paul had brought him into the temple. 30 Then the whole city was provoked and [cm]the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they (IQ)dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. 31 While they were intent on killing him, a report came up to the commander of the (IR)Roman [cn]cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 He immediately (IS)took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to [co]the crowd; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered that he be (IT)bound with (IU)two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done. 34 But among the crowd, (IV)some were shouting one thing and some another, and when he could not find out the [cp]facts because of the uproar, he ordered that [cq]Paul be brought into (IW)the barracks. 35 When Paul got to (IX)the stairs, it came about that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the [cr]mob; 36 for the multitude of people kept following them, shouting, “(IY)Away with him!”

37 As Paul was about to be brought into (IZ)the barracks, he *said to the commander, “May I say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek? 38 Then you are not (JA)the Egyptian who some [cs]time ago stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out (JB)into the wilderness?” 39 But Paul said, “(JC)I am a Jew of Tarsus in (JD)Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city; and I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.” 40 When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on (JE)the stairs, (JF)motioned to the people with his hand; and when there [ct]was a great silence, he spoke to them in the [cu](JG)Hebrew dialect, saying,

In Corinth

18 After this, Paul left Athens(A) and went to Corinth.(B) There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla,(C) because Claudius(D) had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.(E) Every Sabbath(F) he reasoned in the synagogue,(G) trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

When Silas(H) and Timothy(I) came from Macedonia,(J) Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.(K) But when they opposed Paul and became abusive,(L) he shook out his clothes in protest(M) and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads!(N) I am innocent of it.(O) From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”(P)

Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God.(Q) Crispus,(R) the synagogue leader,(S) and his entire household(T) believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:(U) “Do not be afraid;(V) keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you,(W) and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” 11 So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.(X)

12 While Gallio was proconsul(Y) of Achaia,(Z) the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. 13 “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”

14 Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15 But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law(AA)—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” 16 So he drove them off. 17 Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes(AB) the synagogue leader(AC) and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.

Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos

18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters(AD) and sailed for Syria,(AE) accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila.(AF) Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae(AG) because of a vow he had taken.(AH) 19 They arrived at Ephesus,(AI) where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. 21 But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.”(AJ) Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he landed at Caesarea,(AK) he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.(AL)

23 After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia(AM) and Phrygia,(AN) strengthening all the disciples.(AO)

24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos,(AP) a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus.(AQ) He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor[a](AR) and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.(AS) 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila(AT) heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia,(AU) the brothers and sisters(AV) encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures(AW) that Jesus was the Messiah.(AX)

Paul in Ephesus

19 While Apollos(AY) was at Corinth,(AZ) Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.(BA) There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit(BB) when[b] you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

Paul said, “John’s baptism(BC) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”(BD) On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(BE) When Paul placed his hands on them,(BF) the Holy Spirit came on them,(BG) and they spoke in tongues[c](BH) and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.

Paul entered the synagogue(BI) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.(BJ) But some of them(BK) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.(BL) So Paul left them. He took the disciples(BM) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years,(BN) so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia(BO) heard the word of the Lord.(BP)

11 God did extraordinary miracles(BQ) through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured(BR) and the evil spirits left them.

13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits(BS) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus(BT) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,(BU) they were all seized with fear,(BV) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.[d] 20 In this way the word of the Lord(BW) spread widely and grew in power.(BX)

21 After all this had happened, Paul decided[e] to go to Jerusalem,(BY) passing through Macedonia(BZ) and Achaia.(CA) “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”(CB) 22 He sent two of his helpers,(CC) Timothy(CD) and Erastus,(CE) to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia(CF) a little longer.

The Riot in Ephesus

23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.(CG) 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.(CH) 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus(CI) and in practically the whole province of Asia.(CJ) He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.(CK) 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”

28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(CL) 29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius(CM) and Aristarchus,(CN) Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia,(CO) and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples(CP) would not let him. 31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.

32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another.(CQ) Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned(CR) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(CS)

35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians,(CT) doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples(CU) nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen(CV) have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls.(CW) They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

Through Macedonia and Greece

20 When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples(CX) and, after encouraging them, said goodbye and set out for Macedonia.(CY) He traveled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people, and finally arrived in Greece, where he stayed three months. Because some Jews had plotted against him(CZ) just as he was about to sail for Syria,(DA) he decided to go back through Macedonia.(DB) He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus(DC) and Secundus from Thessalonica,(DD) Gaius(DE) from Derbe, Timothy(DF) also, and Tychicus(DG) and Trophimus(DH) from the province of Asia.(DI) These men went on ahead and waited for us(DJ) at Troas.(DK) But we sailed from Philippi(DL) after the Festival of Unleavened Bread, and five days later joined the others at Troas,(DM) where we stayed seven days.

Eutychus Raised From the Dead at Troas

On the first day of the week(DN) we came together to break bread.(DO) Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room(DP) where we were meeting. Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man(DQ) and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!”(DR) 11 Then he went upstairs again and broke bread(DS) and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12 The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.

Paul’s Farewell to the Ephesian Elders

13 We went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we were going to take Paul aboard. He had made this arrangement because he was going there on foot. 14 When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene. 15 The next day we set sail from there and arrived off Chios. The day after that we crossed over to Samos, and on the following day arrived at Miletus.(DT) 16 Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus(DU) to avoid spending time in the province of Asia,(DV) for he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem,(DW) if possible, by the day of Pentecost.(DX)

17 From Miletus,(DY) Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders(DZ) of the church. 18 When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you,(EA) from the first day I came into the province of Asia.(EB) 19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears(EC) and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.(ED) 20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything(EE) that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. 21 I have declared to both Jews(EF) and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance(EG) and have faith in our Lord Jesus.(EH)

22 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem,(EI) not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me(EJ) that prison and hardships are facing me.(EK) 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;(EL) my only aim is to finish the race(EM) and complete the task(EN) the Lord Jesus has given me(EO)—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.(EP)

25 “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom(EQ) will ever see me again.(ER) 26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.(ES) 27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.(ET) 28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock(EU) of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.(EV) Be shepherds of the church of God,[f](EW) which he bought(EX) with his own blood.[g](EY) 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves(EZ) will come in among you and will not spare the flock.(FA) 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples(FB) after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years(FC) I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.(FD)

32 “Now I commit you to God(FE) and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance(FF) among all those who are sanctified.(FG) 33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.(FH) 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.(FI) 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36 When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.(FJ) 37 They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him.(FK) 38 What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again.(FL) Then they accompanied him to the ship.(FM)

On to Jerusalem

21 After we(FN) had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Kos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia,(FO) went on board and set sail. After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria.(FP) We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. We sought out the disciples(FQ) there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit(FR) they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray.(FS) After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.

We continued our voyage from Tyre(FT) and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters(FU) and stayed with them for a day. Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea(FV) and stayed at the house of Philip(FW) the evangelist,(FX) one of the Seven. He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.(FY)

10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus(FZ) came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says,(GA) ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind(GB) the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”(GC)

12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die(GD) in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”(GE) 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up(GF) and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”(GG)

15 After this, we started on our way up to Jerusalem.(GH) 16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea(GI) accompanied us and brought us to the home of Mnason, where we were to stay. He was a man from Cyprus(GJ) and one of the early disciples.

Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem

17 When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers and sisters(GK) received us warmly.(GL) 18 The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James,(GM) and all the elders(GN) were present. 19 Paul greeted them and reported in detail what God had done among the Gentiles(GO) through his ministry.(GP)

20 When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous(GQ) for the law.(GR) 21 They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses,(GS) telling them not to circumcise their children(GT) or live according to our customs.(GU) 22 What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, 23 so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow.(GV) 24 Take these men, join in their purification rites(GW) and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved.(GX) Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. 25 As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.”(GY)

26 The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them.(GZ)

Paul Arrested

27 When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him,(HA) 28 shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”(HB) 29 (They had previously seen Trophimus(HC) the Ephesian(HD) in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)

30 The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul,(HE) they dragged him(HF) from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. 31 While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.(HG)

33 The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound(HH) with two(HI) chains.(HJ) Then he asked who he was and what he had done. 34 Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another,(HK) and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks.(HL) 35 When Paul reached the steps,(HM) the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers. 36 The crowd that followed kept shouting, “Get rid of him!”(HN)

Paul Speaks to the Crowd(HO)

37 As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks,(HP) he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?”

“Do you speak Greek?” he replied. 38 “Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness(HQ) some time ago?”(HR)

39 Paul answered, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus(HS) in Cilicia,(HT) a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.”

40 After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned(HU) to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic[h]:(HV)
