Thus says the Lord of hosts: (A)“Let your hands be strong, you who in these days have been hearing these words from the mouth of (B)the prophets who were present on (C)the day that the foundation of the house of the Lord of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. 10 For before those days (D)there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor. 11 But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as in the former days, declares the Lord of hosts. 12 (E)For there shall be a sowing of peace. The vine shall give its fruit, and the ground shall give its produce, (F)and the heavens shall give their dew. (G)And I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. 13 And as (H)you have been a byword of cursing among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, (I)so will I save you, and (J)you shall be a blessing. (K)Fear not, but (L)let your hands be strong.”

14 For thus says the Lord of hosts: (M)“As I purposed to bring disaster to you when your fathers provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts, 15 so again have I purposed in these days to bring good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah; (N)fear not. 16 These are the things that you shall do: (O)Speak the truth to one another; (P)render in your gates judgments (Q)that are true and make for peace; 17 (R)do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and (S)love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the Lord.”

18 And the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying, 19 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: The fast of the (T)fourth month and the fast of the (U)fifth and the fast of the (V)seventh and the fast of the (W)tenth shall be to the house of Judah (X)seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love (Y)truth and peace.

20 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities. 21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, (Z)‘Let us go at once (AA)to entreat the favor of the Lord and to seek the Lord of hosts; I myself am going.’ 22 (AB)Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and (AC)to entreat the favor of the Lord. 23 Thus says the Lord of hosts: In those days (AD)ten men (AE)from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for (AF)we have heard that God is with you.’”

Judgment on Israel's Enemies

The oracle of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach
    and (AG)Damascus is its resting place.
For the Lord has an eye on mankind
    and on all the tribes of Israel,[a]
(AH)and on Hamath also, which borders on it,
    (AI)Tyre and (AJ)Sidon, though (AK)they are very wise.
Tyre has built herself (AL)a rampart
    and (AM)heaped up silver like dust,
    and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
    and strike down (AN)her power on the sea,
    and (AO)she shall be devoured by fire.

(AP)Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;
    Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;
    Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.
The king shall perish from Gaza;
    Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;
(AQ)a mixed people[b] shall dwell in Ashdod,
    and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.
I will take away (AR)its blood from its mouth,
    and (AS)its abominations from between its teeth;
(AT)it too shall be a remnant for our God;
    it shall be like (AU)a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
Then (AV)I will encamp at my house as a guard,
    (AW)so that none shall march to and fro;
(AX)no oppressor shall again march over them,
    (AY)for now I see with my own eyes.

The Coming King of Zion

(AZ)Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
(BA)Behold, (BB)your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
(BC)humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 (BD)I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and (BE)the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and (BF)he shall speak peace to the nations;
(BG)his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from (BH)the River[c] to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, because of (BI)the blood of my covenant with you,
    (BJ)I will set your prisoners free from (BK)the waterless pit.
12 Return to your stronghold, O (BL)prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that (BM)I will restore to you double.
13 For (BN)I have bent Judah as my bow;
    I have made Ephraim its arrow.
I will stir up your sons, O Zion,
    against your sons, (BO)O Greece,
    and wield you like a warrior's sword.

The Lord Will Save His People

14 Then the Lord will appear over them,
    and (BP)his arrow will go forth like lightning;
(BQ)the Lord God will sound the trumpet
    and will march forth in (BR)the whirlwinds (BS)of the south.
15 The Lord of hosts (BT)will protect them,
    and (BU)they shall devour, (BV)and tread down the sling stones,
and (BW)they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine,
    and be full like a bowl,
    drenched (BX)like the corners of the altar.

16 On that day the Lord their God will save them,
    as (BY)the flock of his people;
for (BZ)like the jewels of a crown
    they shall shine on his land.
17 (CA)For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!
    (CB)Grain shall make the young men flourish,
    and new wine the young women.

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Now hear these words, ‘Let your hands be strong(A) so that the temple may be built.’ This is also what the prophets(B) said who were present when the foundation(C) was laid for the house of the Lord Almighty. 10 Before that time there were no wages(D) for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely(E) because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor. 11 But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as I did in the past,”(F) declares the Lord Almighty.

12 “The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit,(G) the ground will produce its crops,(H) and the heavens will drop their dew.(I) I will give all these things as an inheritance(J) to the remnant of this people.(K) 13 Just as you, Judah and Israel, have been a curse[a](L) among the nations, so I will save(M) you, and you will be a blessing.[b](N) Do not be afraid,(O) but let your hands be strong.(P)

14 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Just as I had determined to bring disaster(Q) on you and showed no pity when your ancestors angered me,” says the Lord Almighty, 15 “so now I have determined to do good(R) again to Jerusalem and Judah.(S) Do not be afraid. 16 These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth(T) to each other, and render true and sound judgment(U) in your courts;(V) 17 do not plot evil(W) against each other, and do not love to swear falsely.(X) I hate all this,” declares the Lord.

18 The word of the Lord Almighty came to me.

19 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “The fasts of the fourth,(Y) fifth,(Z) seventh(AA) and tenth(AB) months will become joyful(AC) and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth(AD) and peace.”

20 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, 21 and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat(AE) the Lord and seek(AF) the Lord Almighty. I myself am going.’ 22 And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord Almighty and to entreat him.”(AG)

23 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “In those days ten people from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’”(AH)

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

A prophecy:(AI)

The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak
    and will come to rest on Damascus(AJ)
for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel
    are on the Lord[c]
and on Hamath(AK) too, which borders on it,
    and on Tyre(AL) and Sidon,(AM) though they are very skillful.
Tyre has built herself a stronghold;
    she has heaped up silver like dust,
    and gold like the dirt of the streets.(AN)
But the Lord will take away her possessions
    and destroy(AO) her power on the sea,
    and she will be consumed by fire.(AP)
Ashkelon(AQ) will see it and fear;
    Gaza will writhe in agony,
    and Ekron too, for her hope will wither.
Gaza will lose her king
    and Ashkelon will be deserted.
A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod,
    and I will put an end(AR) to the pride of the Philistines.
I will take the blood from their mouths,
    the forbidden food from between their teeth.
Those who are left will belong to our God(AS)
    and become a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.(AT)
But I will encamp(AU) at my temple
    to guard it against marauding forces.(AV)
Never again will an oppressor overrun my people,
    for now I am keeping watch.(AW)

The Coming of Zion’s King

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!(AX)
    Shout,(AY) Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,(AZ)
    righteous and victorious,(BA)
lowly and riding on a donkey,(BB)
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.(BC)
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,

He will proclaim peace(BE) to the nations.
    His rule will extend from sea to sea
    and from the River[d] to the ends of the earth.(BF)
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant(BG) with you,
    I will free your prisoners(BH) from the waterless pit.(BI)
12 Return to your fortress,(BJ) you prisoners of hope;
    even now I announce that I will restore twice(BK) as much to you.
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow(BL)
    and fill it with Ephraim.(BM)
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
    against your sons, Greece,(BN)
    and make you like a warrior’s sword.(BO)

The Lord Will Appear

14 Then the Lord will appear over them;(BP)
    his arrow will flash like lightning.(BQ)
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;(BR)
    he will march in the storms(BS) of the south,
15     and the Lord Almighty will shield(BT) them.
They will destroy
    and overcome with slingstones.(BU)
They will drink and roar as with wine;(BV)
    they will be full like a bowl(BW)
    used for sprinkling[e] the corners(BX) of the altar.
16 The Lord their God will save his people on that day(BY)
    as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
    like jewels in a crown.(BZ)
17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!
    Grain will make the young men thrive,
    and new wine the young women.

  1. Psalm 148:14 Horn here symbolizes strength.

The Thousand Years

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, (A)holding in his hand the key to (B)the bottomless pit[a] and a great chain. And he seized (C)the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and (D)bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into (E)the pit, and shut it and (F)sealed it over him, so that (G)he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

Then I saw (H)thrones, and (I)seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw (J)the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those (K)who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. (L)They came to life and (M)reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. (N)Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such (O)the second death has no power, but they will be (P)priests of God and of Christ, and they (Q)will reign with him for a thousand years.

The Defeat of Satan

And when the thousand years are ended, (R)Satan will be released from his prison and will come out (S)to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, (T)Gog and Magog, (U)to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And (V)they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded (W)the camp of the saints and (X)the beloved city, but (Y)fire came down from heaven[b] and consumed them, 10 and the devil (Z)who had deceived them was (AA)thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where (AB)the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Judgment Before the Great White Throne

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence (AC)earth and sky fled away, and (AD)no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and (AE)books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is (AF)the book of life. And (AG)the dead were judged by what was written in the books, (AH)according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, (AI)Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, (AJ)according to what they had done. 14 Then (AK)Death and Hades (AL)were thrown into the lake of fire. This is (AM)the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, (AN)he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Thousand Years

20 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven,(A) having the key(B) to the Abyss(C) and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan,(D) and bound him for a thousand years.(E) He threw him into the Abyss,(F) and locked and sealed(G) it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations(H) anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

I saw thrones(I) on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.(J) And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded(K) because of their testimony about Jesus(L) and because of the word of God.(M) They[a] had not worshiped the beast(N) or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands.(O) They came to life and reigned(P) with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection.(Q) Blessed(R) and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death(S) has no power over them, but they will be priests(T) of God and of Christ and will reign with him(U) for a thousand years.

The Judgment of Satan

When the thousand years are over,(V) Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations(W) in the four corners of the earth(X)—Gog and Magog(Y)—and to gather them for battle.(Z) In number they are like the sand on the seashore.(AA) They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded(AB) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.(AC) But fire came down from heaven(AD) and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them,(AE) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,(AF) where the beast(AG) and the false prophet(AH) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.(AI)

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne(AJ) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,(AK) and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,(AL) standing before the throne, and books were opened.(AM) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.(AN) The dead were judged(AO) according to what they had done(AP) as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades(AQ) gave up the dead(AR) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.(AS) 14 Then death(AT) and Hades(AU) were thrown into the lake of fire.(AV) The lake of fire is the second death.(AW) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life(AX) was thrown into the lake of fire.
