Fidelidad de Dios hacia su pueblo infiel

78 Pueblo mío, escucha mis enseñanzas;
inclina tu oído a las palabras de mi boca.
2 Abriré mi boca y diré proverbios;
hablaré de los misterios de tiempos pasados,(A)
3 de cosas que ya hemos oído y que conocemos
porque nuestros padres nos las contaron.
4 No las mantendremos ocultas a nuestros hijos,
sino que diremos a las generaciones futuras
que el Señor es digno de alabanza
por su poder y por sus hechos portentosos.
5 El Señor estableció su ley para Jacob;
le entregó sus enseñanzas a Israel,
y ordenó a nuestros padres que nos las enseñaran,
6 para que las conociera la generación futura,
los hijos que nos habrían de nacer,
y ellos a su vez las contaran a sus hijos,
7 para que pusieran en Dios su confianza
y no se olvidaran de sus grandes hechos;
para que obedecieran sus mandamientos,
8 y no fueran como sus padres,
gente rebelde y desobediente,
gente que no entrega a Dios su corazón,
y cuyo espíritu no le es fiel.
9 Los efraimitas, arqueros armados,
volvieron la espalda en el día de la batalla.
10 No cumplieron con el pacto de Dios,
ni quisieron ceñirse a su ley;
11 más bien, se olvidaron de sus obras,
y de las maravillas que les había mostrado.
12 Allá en Egipto,(B) en el campo de Soán,
Dios hizo maravillas a los ojos de sus padres.
13 Partió el mar en dos, y los hizo pasar,
conteniendo las aguas como dos murallas.(C)
14 Durante el día los guiaba con una nube,
y durante la noche con un resplandor de fuego.(D)
15 En el desierto hendió las peñas,
y les dio a beber agua de los grandes abismos:
16 ¡de la peña hizo brotar corrientes,
y las aguas fluyeron como ríos!(E)
17 Pero ellos volvieron a pecar contra Dios;
en el desierto se rebelaron contra el Altísimo.
18 Decidieron poner a prueba a Dios
y pidieron comida a su antojo.
19 Hablaron en contra de Dios, y dijeron:
«¿Podrá Dios tendernos una mesa en el desierto?
20 Hemos visto que hirió la peña, y que brotaron aguas,
y que en torrentes inundaron la tierra,
¿pero podrá también darnos pan?
¿Podrá darle carne a su pueblo?»
21 Cuando el Señor oyó esto, se indignó,
y su furor se encendió contra Jacob, como un fuego;
su furor se encendió contra Israel,
22 porque no tuvieron fe en Dios,
ni confiaron en que él podía salvarlos.
23 Sin embargo, dio órdenes a las nubes,
y abrió las compuertas de los cielos,
24 y como lluvia dejó caer sobre ellos el maná;
¡les dio a comer el trigo de los cielos!(F)
25 ¡Los mortales comieron pan angelical!
¡Dios les envió comida hasta saciarlos!
26 Cambió la dirección del viento del este,
y con su poder hizo venir el viento del sur,
27 y cayó sobre ellos carne como lluvia;
¡llovieron tantas aves como arena hay en el mar!
28 Dios las dejó caer en el campamento,
y en los alrededores de sus tiendas,
29 y ellos comieron y quedaron saciados,
pues Dios satisfizo su apetito.
30 Pero aun no habían calmado su hambre;
aún tenían la comida en la boca,
31 cuando el furor de Dios vino sobre ellos
y acabó con sus hombres más robustos;
¡Dios derribó a los mejores israelitas!(G)
32 A pesar de todo, ellos siguieron pecando
y no dieron crédito a sus grandes hechos.
33 Por eso Dios puso fin a sus días,
¡y en un soplo les quitó la vida!
34 Si Dios los hacía morir, ellos lo buscaban
y con gran diligencia se volvían a él;
35 ¡se acordaban de que Dios era su refugio,
de que el Dios Altísimo era su redentor!
36 Pero con los labios lo adulaban,
y con la lengua le mentían.
37 En el fondo, nunca fueron rectos con él,(H)
ni se mantuvieron fieles a su pacto.
38 Dios, en su bondad, les perdonaba su maldad;
más de una vez contuvo su enojo,
calmó su ira y no los destruyó.
39 Se acordó de que eran mortales,
¡un simple soplo que se va y no vuelve!
40 ¡Cuántas veces lo desobedecieron en el desierto!
¡Cuántas veces lo hicieron enojar en el yermo!
41 ¡Una y otra vez ponían a prueba a Dios!
¡Provocaban al Santo de Israel!
42 No traían a la memoria su poder,
ni el día en que él los libró de la angustia,
43 cuando realizó en Egipto sus señales,
y sus maravillas en el campo de Soán;
44 cuando convirtió en sangre sus ríos
y sus corrientes, para que no bebieran.(I)
45 Les mandó enjambres de moscas,(J) que los devoraban,
y también ranas,(K) que los destruían;
46 dejó que la oruga y la langosta(L)
destruyera el fruto de su trabajo.
47 Con granizo destruyó sus viñas,
y con escarcha acabó con sus higueras.
48 Con granizo hizo estragos en sus ganados,
y con sus rayos(M) acabó con sus animales.
49 Descargó sobre ellos el ardor de su ira;
los angustió con su enojo y su indignación,
¡con un ejército de ángeles destructores!
50 Le abrió paso a su furor
y no les salvó la vida, sino que los entregó a la muerte.
51 En Egipto,(N) en los campamentos de Cam,
les quitó la vida a todos los primogénitos,
a los primeros frutos de su vigor.
52 Dios hizo que su pueblo saliera como ovejas,
y como un rebaño(O) los llevó por el desierto;
53 con mano segura los fue llevando,
para que no tuvieran ningún temor,
mientras que el mar cubrió a sus enemigos.(P)
54 Y los trajo a las fronteras de su tierra santa,(Q)
a este monte que ganó con su mano derecha.
55 Expulsó a las naciones de la presencia de su pueblo,(R)
repartió en sorteo las tierras que les dio en propiedad,
y permitió que las tribus de Israel se asentaran allí.
56 Pero ellos pusieron a prueba al Dios Altísimo;(S)
lo hicieron enojar y no obedecieron sus decretos.
57 Hicieron lo que sus padres, y se rebelaron contra él;
¡se torcieron como un arco engañoso!
58 Lo hicieron enojar con sus lugares altos;
lo provocaron a celo con sus imágenes talladas.
59 Cuando Dios lo supo, se enojó
y rechazó por completo a Israel.
60 Se alejó del tabernáculo de Silo,
de su lugar de residencia terrenal,(T)
61 y dejó caer en manos del enemigo(U)
el símbolo de su gloria y su poder.
62 Fue tanto su enojo contra su pueblo
que los dejó caer a filo de espada.
63 Sus jóvenes fueron devorados por el fuego;
sus doncellas no llegaron a oír cantos nupciales.
64 Sus sacerdotes cayeron a filo de espada,
y sus viudas no lamentaron su muerte.
65 Pero el Señor despertó como de un sueño,
y gritando como un guerrero que ha tomado vino,
66 hirió a sus enemigos y los puso en fuga;
¡los dejó avergonzados para siempre!
67 Desechó los campamentos de José,
y no escogió a la tribu de Efraín,
68 sino que prefirió a la tribu de Judá
y al monte Sión, que tanto ama.
69 Edificó su santuario semejante a las alturas,
y semejante a la tierra, que afirmó para siempre.
70 Eligió a su siervo David,
al que tomó de los rebaños de ovejas;
71 David cuidaba a las ovejas recién paridas,
pero Dios lo puso a cuidar de su pueblo Israel,
de Jacob, que es su heredad.(V)
72 Y David cuidó de ellos con todo el corazón;
con gran pericia los guió como a un rebaño.

78 Pueblo mío, atiende a mi enseñanza;
presta oído a las palabras de mi boca.
2 Hablaré por medio de parábolas
y revelaré misterios de antaño,
3 cosas que hemos oído y conocido
y que nuestros antepasados nos han contado.
4 No las esconderemos de sus descendientes;
hablaremos a la generación venidera
del poder del Señor, de sus proezas
y de las maravillas que ha hecho.
5 Él promulgó un mandato para Jacob,
dictó una ley para Israel;
ordenó a nuestros antepasados
enseñarlos a sus descendientes,
6 para que los conocieran las generaciones venideras
y los hijos que habrían de nacer,
que a su vez los enseñarían a sus hijos.
7 Así ellos pondrían su confianza en Dios
y no se olvidarían de sus proezas,
sino que cumplirían sus mandamientos.
8 Así no serían como sus antepasados:
generación obstinada y rebelde,
gente de corazón fluctuante,
cuyo espíritu no se mantuvo fiel a Dios.
9 La tribu de Efraín, con sus diestros arqueros,
retrocedió el día de la batalla.
10 No cumplieron con el pacto de Dios,
sino que se negaron a seguir su Ley.
11 Echaron al olvido sus proezas,
las maravillas que les había mostrado,
12 los milagros que hizo a la vista de sus antepasados
en la tierra de Egipto, en la región de Zoán.
13 Abrió el mar para que pudieran pasar;
mantuvo erguidas las aguas como un muro.
14 De día los guio con una nube
y toda la noche con luz de fuego.
15 En el desierto partió las rocas
y les dio a beber torrentes de aguas;
16 hizo que brotaran arroyos de la peña
y que las aguas fluyeran como ríos.
17 Pero ellos volvieron a pecar contra él;
en el desierto se rebelaron contra el Altísimo.
18 Deliberadamente pusieron a Dios a prueba
y exigieron comida a su antojo.
19 Murmuraron contra Dios
y aun dijeron:
«¿Podrá Dios preparar una mesa en el desierto?
20 Cuando golpeó la roca,
el agua brotó en torrentes;
pero, ¿podrá también darnos de comer?
¿Podrá proveerle carne a su pueblo?».
21 Cuando el Señor oyó esto, se indignó;
su enojo se encendió contra Jacob,
su ira ardió contra Israel.
22 Porque no confiaron en Dios
ni creyeron que él los salvaría.
23 Desde lo alto dio una orden a las nubes,
y se abrieron las puertas de los cielos.
24 Hizo que les lloviera maná para que comieran;
les dio a comer trigo del cielo.
25 Todos ellos comieron pan de ángeles;
Dios les envió comida hasta saciarlos.
26 Desató desde el cielo el viento del este
y con su poder levantó el viento del sur.
27 Cual lluvia de polvo, hizo que les lloviera carne;
nubes de pájaros, como la arena del mar.
28 Los hizo caer en medio de su campamento
y en los alrededores de sus tiendas.
29 Comieron y se hartaron,
pues Dios les cumplió su capricho.
30 Pero el capricho no les duró mucho:
aún tenían la comida en la boca
31 cuando el enojo de Dios vino sobre ellos:
dio muerte a sus hombres más robustos;
abatió a los jóvenes de Israel.
32 A pesar de todo, siguieron pecando
y no creyeron en sus maravillas.
33 Por tanto, Dios hizo que sus días se esfumaran como un suspiro,
que sus años acabaran en medio del terror.
34 Si Dios los hería de muerte, entonces lo buscaban,
y con ansias se volvían de nuevo a él.
35 Se acordaban de que Dios era su Roca,
de que el Dios Altísimo era su Redentor.
36 Pero entonces lo halagaban con la boca
y le mentían con la lengua.
37 No fue su corazón sincero para con Dios;
no fueron fieles a su pacto.
38 Sin embargo, él les tuvo compasión;
les perdonó su maldad
y no los destruyó.
Una y otra vez contuvo su enojo
y no se dejó llevar del todo por la ira.
39 Se acordó de que eran simples mortales,
un efímero suspiro que jamás regresa.
40 ¡Cuántas veces se rebelaron contra él en el desierto
y lo entristecieron en los páramos!
41 Una y otra vez ponían a Dios a prueba;
provocaban al Santo de Israel.
42 Jamás se acordaron de su poder,
de cuando los rescató del opresor,
43 ni de sus señales milagrosas en Egipto,
ni de sus portentos en la región de Zoán,
44 cuando convirtió en sangre los ríos egipcios
y no pudieron ellos beber de sus arroyos;
45 cuando les envió tábanos que se los devoraban
y ranas que los destruían;
46 cuando entregó sus cosechas a los saltamontes
y sus sembrados a la langosta;
47 cuando con granizo destruyó sus viñas
y con escarcha sus higueras;
48 cuando entregó su ganado al granizo
y sus rebaños a las centellas;
49 cuando lanzó contra ellos el ardor de su ira,
de su furor, indignación y hostilidad:
¡todo un ejército de ángeles destructores!
50 Dio rienda suelta a su enojo
y no los libró de la muerte,
sino que los entregó a la plaga.
51 Dio muerte a todos los primogénitos de Egipto,
las primicias de su virilidad en los campamentos de Cam.
52 A su pueblo lo guio como a un rebaño;
los llevó por el desierto, como a ovejas,
53 infundiéndoles confianza para que no temieran.
Pero a sus enemigos se los tragó el mar.
54 Trajo a su pueblo a esta su tierra santa,
a estas montañas que su diestra conquistó.
55 Al paso de los israelitas expulsó naciones,
cuyas tierras dio a su pueblo como herencia;
¡así estableció en sus tiendas a las tribus de Israel!
56 Pero ellos pusieron a prueba a Dios:
se rebelaron contra el Altísimo
y desobedecieron sus mandatos.
57 Fueron desleales y traidores, como sus antepasados;
¡tan falsos como un arco defectuoso!
58 Lo irritaron con sus altares paganos;
con sus imágenes despertaron sus celos.
59 Dios lo supo y se indignó,
por lo que rechazó completamente a Israel.
60 Abandonó el santuario de Siló,
la tienda donde habitaba entre los humanos,
61 y dejó que el símbolo de su poder y gloria
cayera cautivo en manos enemigas.
62 Dejó que a su pueblo lo mataran a filo de espada,
pues se indignó contra su heredad.
63 A sus jóvenes los consumió el fuego
y no hubo cantos nupciales para sus doncellas;
64 a filo de espada cayeron sus sacerdotes
y sus viudas no los pudieron llorar.
65 Despertó entonces el Señor,
como quien despierta de un sueño,
como un guerrero que, por causa del vino, lanza gritos desaforados.
66 Hizo retroceder a sus enemigos
y los puso en vergüenza para siempre.
67 Rechazó a los descendientes[a] de José
y no escogió a la tribu de Efraín;
68 más bien, escogió a la tribu de Judá
y al monte Sión, al cual ama.
69 Construyó su santuario, alto como los cielos,[b]
como la tierra, que él afirmó para siempre.
70 Escogió a su siervo David,
al que sacó del redil de las ovejas,
71 y lo quitó de andar arreando los rebaños
para que fuera el pastor de Jacob, su pueblo;
el pastor de Israel, su herencia.

A skillful song, or a didactic or reflective poem, of Asaph.
1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable (in instruction by numerous examples); I will utter dark sayings of old [that hide important truth]—(A)
3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, but we will tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonderful works that He has performed.
5 For He established a testimony (an express precept) in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding our fathers that they should make [the great facts of God’s dealings with Israel] known to their children,
6 That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born might arise and recount them to their children,
7 That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments
8 And might not be as their fathers—a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their hearts aright nor prepared their hearts to know God, and whose spirits were not steadfast and faithful to God.
9 The children of Ephraim were armed and carrying bows, yet they turned back in the day of battle.
10 They kept not the covenant of God and refused to walk according to His law
11 And forgot His works and His wonders that He had shown them.
12 Marvelous things did He in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided].
13 He divided the [Red] Sea and caused them to pass through it, and He made the waters stand like a heap.(B)
14 In the daytime also He led them with a [pillar of] cloud and all the night with a light of fire.(C)
15 He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as out of the deep.
16 He brought streams also out of the rock [at Rephidim and Kadesh] and caused waters to run down like rivers.(D)
17 Yet they still went on to sin against Him by provoking and rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness (in the land of drought).
18 And they tempted God in their hearts by asking for food according to their [selfish] desire and appetite.
19 Yes, they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish [the food for] a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He did smite the rock so that waters gushed out and the streams overflowed; but can He give bread also? Can He provide flesh for His people?
21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, He was [full of] wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob, His anger mounted up against Israel,
22 Because in God they believed not [they relied not on Him, they adhered not to Him], and they trusted not in His salvation (His power to save).
23 Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven;
24 And He rained down upon them manna to eat and gave them heaven’s grain.(E)
25 Everyone ate the bread of the mighty [man ate angels’ food]; God sent them meat in abundance.
26 He let forth the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by His power He guided the south wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them like the dust, and winged birds [quails] like the sand of the seas.(F)
28 And He let [the birds] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their tents.
29 So they ate and were well filled; He gave them what they craved and lusted after.
30 But scarce had they stilled their craving, and while their meat was yet in their mouths,(G)
31 The wrath of God came upon them and slew the strongest and sturdiest of them and smote down Israel’s chosen youth.
32 In spite of all this, they sinned still more, for they believed not in (relied not on and adhered not to Him for) His wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days He consumed like a breath [in emptiness, falsity, and futility] and their years in terror and sudden haste.
34 When He slew [some of] them, [the remainder] inquired after Him diligently, and they repented and sincerely sought God [for a time].
35 And they [earnestly] remembered that God was their Rock, and the Most High God their Redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouths and lied to Him with their tongues.
37 For their hearts were not right or sincere with Him, neither were they faithful and steadfast to His covenant.(H)
38 But He, full of [merciful] compassion, forgave their iniquity and destroyed them not; yes, many a time He turned His anger away and did not stir up all His wrath and indignation.
39 For He [earnestly] remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that goes and does not return.
40 How often they defied and rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!
41 And time and again they turned back and tempted God, provoking and incensing the Holy One of Israel.
42 They remembered not [seriously the miracles of the working of] His hand, nor the day when He delivered them from the enemy,
43 How He wrought His miracles in Egypt and His wonders in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided]
44 And turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink from them.
45 He sent swarms of [venomous] flies among them which devoured them, and frogs which destroyed them.
46 He gave also their crops to the caterpillar and [the fruit of] their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with frost and [great chunks of] ice.
48 He [caused them to shut up their cattle or] gave them up also to the hail and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.(I)
49 He let loose upon them the fierceness of His anger, His wrath and indignation and distress, by sending [a mission of] angels of calamity and woe among them.
50 He leveled and made a straight path for His anger [to give it free course]; He did not spare [the Egyptian families] from death but gave their beasts over to the pestilence and the life [of their eldest] over to the plague.
51 He smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents [of the land of the sons] of Ham.
52 But [God] led His own people forth like sheep and guided them [with a shepherd’s care] like a flock in the wilderness.
53 And He led them on safely and in confident trust, so that they feared not; but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.(J)
54 And He brought them to His holy border, the border of [Canaan] His sanctuary, even to this mountain [Zion] which His right hand had acquired.
55 He drove out the nations also before [Israel] and allotted their land as a heritage, measured out and partitioned; and He made the tribes of Israel to dwell in the tents of those dispossessed.
56 Yet they tempted and provoked and rebelled against the Most High God and kept not His testimonies.
57 But they turned back and dealt unfaithfully and treacherously like their fathers; they were twisted like a warped and deceitful bow [that will not respond to the archer’s aim].
58 For they provoked Him to [righteous] anger with their high places [for idol worship] and moved Him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 When God heard this, He was full of [holy] wrath; and He utterly rejected Israel, greatly abhorring and loathing [her ways],
60 So that He forsook the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent in which He had dwelt among men [and never returned to it again],
61 And delivered His strength and power (the ark of the covenant) into captivity, and His glory into the hands of the foe (the Philistines).(K)
62 He gave His people over also to the sword and was wroth with His heritage [Israel].(L)
63 The fire [of war] devoured their young men, and their bereaved virgins were not praised in a wedding song.
64 Their priests [Hophni and Phinehas] fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation [for the bodies came not back from the scene of battle, and the widow of Phinehas also died that day].(M)
65 Then the Lord awakened as from sleep, as a strong man whose consciousness of power is heightened by wine.
66 And He smote His adversaries in the back [as they fled]; He put them to lasting shame and reproach.
67 Moreover, He rejected the tent of Joseph and chose not the tribe of Ephraim [in which the tabernacle had been accustomed to stand].
68 But He chose the tribe of Judah [as Israel’s leader], Mount Zion, which He loved [to replace Shiloh as His capital].
69 And He built His sanctuary [exalted] like the heights [of the heavens] and like the earth which He established forever.
70 He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds;(N)
71 From tending the ewes that had their young He brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob His people, of Israel His inheritance.(O)
72 So [David] was their shepherd with an upright heart; he guided them by the discernment and skillfulness [which controlled] his hands.

1 My people, hear my teaching;(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(H) for Jacob(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(L)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(M)—
a stubborn(N) and rebellious(O) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(P)
turned back on the day of battle;(Q)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(R)

but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(AG) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(AH) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(AI) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(AJ)
24 he rained down manna(AK) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(AL) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(AM) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(AN)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(AO)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(AP) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(AQ)
in spite of his wonders,(AR) they did not believe.(AS)
33 So he ended their days in futility(AT)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(AU) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(AV)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(AW)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(AX)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(AY) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AZ)
he forgave(BA) their iniquities(BB)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(BC)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(BD)
a passing breeze(BE) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(BF) against him in the wilderness(BG)
and grieved him(BH) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(BI)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(BJ)
42 They did not remember(BK) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(BL)
43 the day he displayed his signs(BM) in Egypt,
his wonders(BN) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(BO)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(BP) that devoured them,
and frogs(BQ) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(BR)
their produce to the locust.(BS)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(BT)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(BU) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(BV)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(BW)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(BX)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(BY)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BZ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(CA) their enemies.(CB)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(CC) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(CD) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(CE)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(CF) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(CG)
58 They angered him(CH) with their high places;(CI)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(CJ)
59 When God heard(CK) them, he was furious;(CL)
he rejected Israel(CM) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(CN)
the tent he had set up among humans.(CO)
61 He sent the ark of his might(CP) into captivity,(CQ)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(CR)
he was furious with his inheritance.(CS)
63 Fire consumed(CT) their young men,
and their young women had no wedding songs;(CU)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(CV)
and their widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(CW)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(CX)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(CY)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(CZ)
Mount Zion,(DA) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(DB) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(DC) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(DD) he brought him
to be the shepherd(DE) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(DF)
with skillful hands he led them.

78 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
21 Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.
26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.
62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
