Results of Justification

(A)Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a](B)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have (C)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand; and [b]we celebrate in hope of the glory of God. (E)And not only this, but [c]we also (F)celebrate in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (G)perseverance; and (H)perseverance, (I)proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope (J)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (K)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

For while we were still (L)helpless, (M)at the right time (N)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; [d]though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God (O)demonstrates (P)His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, (Q)Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified [e](R)by His blood, we shall be saved (S)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (T)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [f](U)by His life. 11 (V)And not only this, but [g]we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (W)the reconciliation.

12 Therefore, just as through (X)one man sin entered into the world, and (Y)death through sin, and (Z)so death spread to all mankind, because all sinned— 13 for [h]until the Law sin was in the world, but (AA)sin is not [i]counted against anyone when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (AB)in the likeness of the [j]violation committed by Adam, who is a [k](AC)type of Him who was to come.

15 But [l]the gracious gift is not like the offense. For if by the offense of (AD)the one (AE)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (AF)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (AG)the judgment arose from one offense, [m]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many offenses, [n]resulting in justification. 17 For if by the offense of the one, death reigned (AH)through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness (AI)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then, as through (AJ)one offense [o]the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one (AK)act of righteousness [p]the result was (AL)justification of life to all mankind. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (AM)the many (AN)were made sinners, so also through (AO)the obedience of the One (AP)the many will be made righteous. 20 [q](AQ)The Law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, (AR)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as (AS)sin reigned in death, so also (AT)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

(AU)What shall we say then? Are we to (AV)continue in sin so that grace may increase? [r](AW)Far from it! How shall we who (AX)died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been (AY)baptized into (AZ)Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been (BA)buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was (BB)raised from the dead through the (BC)glory of the Father, so we too may walk in (BD)newness of life. For (BE)if we have become [s]united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [t]in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our (BF)old [u]self was (BG)crucified with Him, in order that our (BH)body of sin might be [v]done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for (BI)the one who has died is [w]freed from sin.

Now (BJ)if we have died with Christ, we believe that (BK)we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been (BL)raised from the dead, [x]is never to die again; (BM)death no longer is master over Him. 10 For [y]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but [z]the life that He lives, He lives to [aa]God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be (BN)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to (BO)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (BP)presenting [ab]the parts of your body to sin as [ac]instruments of unrighteousness; but (BQ)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [ad]your body’s parts as [ae]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (BR)sin shall not (BS)be master over you, for (BT)you are not under [af]the Law but (BU)under grace.

15 What then? (BV)Are we to sin because we are not under [ag]the Law but under grace? [ah](BW)Far from it! 16 Do you not (BX)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (BY)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (BZ)sin [ai]resulting in death, or of obedience [aj]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (CA)thanks be to God that [ak]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [al](CB)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (CC)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (CD)I am speaking [am]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just (CE)as you presented [an]the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [ao]resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [ap]your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [aq]resulting in sanctification.

20 For (CF)when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [ar](CG)benefit were you then [as]deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is (CH)death. 22 But now having been (CI)freed from sin and (CJ)enslaved to God, you [at]derive your [au](CK)benefit, [av]resulting in sanctification, and (CL)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (CM)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (CN)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, (CO)brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the [aw]Law), that the [ax]Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For (CP)the married woman is bound by law to her [ay]husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [az]concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is alive she [ba]gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she [bb]gives herself to another man.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were (CQ)put to death (CR)in regard to the Law (CS)through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were (CT)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (CU)brought to light by the Law, were at work (CV)in [bc]the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been (CW)released from the Law, having (CX)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (CY)newness of (CZ)the [bd]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

(DA)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (DB)[be]Far from it! On the contrary, (DC)I would not have come to know sin except [bf]through the Law; for I would not have known about [bg]coveting if the Law had not said, “(DD)You shall not [bh]covet.” But sin, (DE)taking an opportunity (DF)through the commandment, produced in me [bi]coveting of every kind; for (DG)apart [bj]from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart [bk]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [bl](DH)to result in life, proved [bm]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (DI)taking an opportunity (DJ)through the commandment, (DK)deceived me, and through it, killed me. 12 (DL)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? [bn](DM)Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

14 For we know that the Law is (DN)spiritual, but I am (DO)fleshly, (DP)sold [bo](DQ)into bondage to sin. 15 For (DR)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (DS)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (DT)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (DU)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (DV)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (DW)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (DX)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then (DY)the [bp]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [bq]in (DZ)the inner person, 23 but I see (EA)a different law in [br]the parts of my body waging war against the (EB)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [bs]of (EC)the law of sin, the law which is in [bt]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [bu](ED)the body of this (EE)death? 25 (EF)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (EG)the law of sin.

Deliverance from Bondage

Therefore there is now no (EH)condemnation at all for those who are (EI)in (EJ)Christ Jesus. For (EK)the law of the Spirit of life [bv]in (EL)Christ Jesus (EM)has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For (EN)what the Law could not do, [bw](EO)weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in (EP)the likeness of [bx]sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the (EQ)requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who (ER)do not walk [by]according to the flesh but [bz]according to the Spirit. For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on (ES)the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, (ET)the things of the Spirit. (EU)For the mind [ca]set on the flesh is (EV)death, but the mind [cb]set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind [cc]set on the flesh is (EW)hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are (EX)in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not (EY)in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God (EZ)dwells in you. But (FA)if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 (FB)If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [cd]alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who (FC)raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (FD)He who raised (FE)Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [ce]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for (FF)if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are (FG)putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (FH)being led by the Spirit of God, these are (FI)sons and daughters of God. 15 For you (FJ)have not received a spirit of slavery [cf]leading to fear again, but you (FK)have received [cg]a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “(FL)Abba! [ch]Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself (FM)testifies with our spirit that we are (FN)children of God, 17 and if children, (FO)heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (FP)if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (FQ)are not worthy to be compared with the (FR)glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the (FS)eagerly awaiting creation waits for (FT)the revealing of the (FU)sons and daughters of God. 20 For the creation (FV)was subjected to (FW)futility, not willingly, but (FX)because of Him who subjected it, [ci]in hope 21 that (FY)the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (FZ)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (GA)And not only that, but also we ourselves, having (GB)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (GC)groan within ourselves, (GD)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons and daughters, (GE)the redemption of our body. 24 For (GF)in hope we have been saved, but (GG)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (GH)if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Our Victory in Christ

26 Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for (GI)we do not know what to pray for as we should, but (GJ)the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with [cj]groanings too deep for words; 27 and (GK)He who searches the hearts knows what (GL)the mind of the Spirit is, because He (GM)intercedes for the [ck]saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that [cl]God [cm]causes (GN)all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (GO)called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He (GP)foreknew, He also (GQ)predestined to become (GR)conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (GS)firstborn among many brothers and sisters; 30 and these whom He (GT)predestined, He also (GU)called; and these whom He called, He also (GV)justified; and these whom He justified, He also (GW)glorified.

31 (GX)What then shall we say to these things? (GY)If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who (GZ)did not spare His own Son, but (HA)delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring charges against (HB)God’s elect? (HC)God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who (HD)condemns? Christ Jesus is He who (HE)died, but rather, was [cn](HF)raised, who is (HG)at the right hand of God, who also (HH)intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from (HI)the love of [co]Christ? Will (HJ)tribulation, or trouble, or (HK)persecution, or (HL)famine, or (HM)nakedness, or (HN)danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written:

(HO)For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly (HP)conquer through (HQ)Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither (HR)death, nor life, nor (HS)angels, nor principalities, nor (HT)things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from (HU)the love of God that is (HV)in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Deep Concern for Israel

(HW)I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For (HX)I could [cp]wish that I myself were (HY)accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my countrymen, my kinsmen (HZ)according to the flesh, who are (IA)Israelites, to whom belongs (IB)the adoption as sons and daughters, (IC)the glory, (ID)the covenants, (IE)the giving of the Law, (IF)the temple service, and (IG)the promises; whose are (IH)the fathers, and (II)from whom is the [cq]Christ according to the flesh, (IJ)who is over all, (IK)God (IL)blessed [cr]forever. Amen.

But it is not as though (IM)the word of God has failed. (IN)For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; nor are they all children (IO)because they are Abraham’s [cs](IP)descendants, but: “[ct](IQ)through Isaac your [cu]descendants shall be named.” That is, it is not the children of the flesh [cv]who are (IR)children of God, but the (IS)children of the promise are regarded as [cw](IT)descendants. For this is the word of promise: “(IU)At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.” 10 (IV)And not only that, but there was also (IW)Rebekah, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that (IX)God’s purpose according to His choice would [cx]stand, not [cy]because of works but [cz]because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “(IY)The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “(IZ)Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

14 (JA)What shall we say then? (JB)There is no injustice with God, is there? [da](JC)Far from it! 15 For He says to Moses, “(JD)I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will show compassion to whomever I show compassion.” 16 So then, it does not depend on the person who [db]wants it nor the one who [dc](JE)runs, but on (JF)God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “(JG)For this very reason I raised you up, in order to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [dd]throughout the earth.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He (JH)hardens whom He desires.

19 (JI)You will say to me then, “(JJ)Why does He still find fault? For (JK)who has resisted His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, [de](JL)you foolish person, who (JM)answers back to God? (JN)The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does the potter not have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one object [df]for honorable use, and another [dg]for common use? 22 [dh]What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with great (JO)patience objects of wrath (JP)prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known (JQ)the riches of His glory upon (JR)objects of mercy, which He (JS)prepared beforehand for glory, 24 namely us, whom He also (JT)called, (JU)not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles, 25 as He also says in Hosea:

(JV)I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’
And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”
26 (JW)And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’
There they shall be called sons of (JX)the living God.”

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, “(JY)Though the number of the sons of Israel may be (JZ)like the sand of the sea, only (KA)the remnant will be saved; 28 (KB)for the Lord will execute His word on the earth, [di]thoroughly and [dj]quickly.” 29 And just as Isaiah foretold:

(KC)If (KD)the Lord [dk]of armies had not left us [dl](KE)descendants,
(KF)We would have become like Sodom, and would have [dm]been like Gomorrah.”

30 (KG)What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but (KH)the righteousness that is [dn]by faith; 31 however, Israel, (KI)pursuing a law of righteousness, did not (KJ)arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it [do]by faith, but as though they could [dp]by works. They stumbled over (KK)the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written:

(KL)Behold, I am laying in Zion (KM)a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,
(KN)And the one who believes in Him (KO)will not be [dq]put to shame.”

The Word of Faith Brings Salvation

10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have (KP)a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about (KQ)God’s righteousness and (KR)seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For (KS)Christ is the [dr]end of the Law for righteousness to (KT)everyone who believes.

For Moses writes of the righteousness that is [ds]based on the Law, that the person who performs [dt]them (KU)will live by [du]them. But (KV)the righteousness [dv]based on faith speaks as follows: “(KW)Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the (KX)abyss?’ (that is, to (KY)bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “(KZ)The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, [dw]that (LA)if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and (LB)believe in your heart that (LC)God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [dx]resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, [dy]resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “(LD)Whoever believes in Him will not be [dz]put to shame.” 12 For (LE)there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is (LF)Lord of (LG)all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “(LH)Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then are they to call on Him in whom they have not believed? How are they to believe in Him (LI)whom they have not heard? And how are they to hear without (LJ)a preacher? 15 But how are they to preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written: “(LK)How beautiful are the feet of those who [ea](LL)bring good news of good things!”

16 However, they (LM)did not all heed the [eb]good news; for Isaiah says, “(LN)Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from (LO)hearing, and hearing by (LP)the word [ec]of Christ.

18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? On the contrary:

(LQ)Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the [ed]world.”

19 But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says,

(LR)I will (LS)make you jealous with those who are not a nation,
With a foolish nation I will anger you.”

20 And Isaiah is very bold and says,

(LT)I was found by those who did not seek Me,
I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.”

21 But as for Israel, He says, “(LU)I have spread out My hands all day long to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

Israel Has Not Been Rejected

11 I say then, God has not (LV)rejected His people, has He? [ee](LW)Far from it! For (LX)I too am an Israelite, [ef]a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God (LY)has not rejected His people whom He (LZ)foreknew. (MA)Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, (MB)they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what [eg]is the divine response to him? “(MC)I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time (MD)a remnant according to God’s [eh]gracious choice. But (ME)if it is by grace, it is no longer [ei]on the basis of works, since otherwise grace is no longer grace.

What then? What (MF)Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but [ej]those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were (MG)hardened; just as it is written:

(MH)God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”

And David says,

(MI)May their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 (MJ)May their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs continually.”

11 (MK)I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? [ek](ML)Far from it! But by their wrongdoing (MM)salvation has come to the Gentiles, to (MN)make them jealous. 12 Now if their wrongdoing proves to be riches for the world, and their failure, riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their [el](MO)fulfillment be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Therefore insofar as (MP)I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 if somehow I may (MQ)move (MR)my [em]own people to jealousy and (MS)save some of them. 15 For if their rejection proves to be the (MT)reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but (MU)life from the dead? 16 If the (MV)first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are as well.

17 But if some of the (MW)branches were broken off, and (MX)you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the [en]rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that (MY)it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. 19 (MZ)You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you (NA)stand by your faith. (NB)Do not be conceited, but fear; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. 22 See then the kindness and severity of God: to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s (NC)kindness, (ND)if you continue in His kindness; for otherwise you too (NE)will be cut off. 23 And they also, (NF)if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For (NG)I do not want you, brothers and sisters, to be uninformed of this (NH)mystery—so that you will not be (NI)wise in your own estimation—that a partial (NJ)hardening has happened to Israel until the (NK)fullness of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written:

(NL)The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”
27 (NM)This is [eo]My covenant with them,
(NN)When I take away their sins.”

28 In relation to the gospel they are (NO)enemies on your account, but in relation to God’s choice they are beloved (NP)on account of the fathers; 29 for the gifts and the (NQ)calling of God (NR)are irrevocable. 30 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 32 For (NS)God has shut up all in disobedience, so that He may show mercy to all.

33 Oh, the depth of (NT)the riches, [ep]both of the (NU)wisdom and knowledge of God! (NV)How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For (NW)who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? 35 Or (NX)who has first given to Him, [eq]that it would be paid back to him? 36 For (NY)from Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things. (NZ)To Him be the glory [er]forever. Amen.

Dedicated Service

12 Therefore (OA)I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to (OB)present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, [es]acceptable to God, which is your [et]spiritual service of worship. And do not (OC)be conformed to (OD)this [eu]world, but be transformed by the (OE)renewing of your mind, so that you may [ev](OF)prove what the will of God is, that which is good and [ew]acceptable and perfect.

For through (OG)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (OH)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (OI)each a measure of faith. For (OJ)just as we have many parts in one body and all [ex]the body’s parts do not have the same function, so we, (OK)who are many, are (OL)one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. However, since we have gifts that (OM)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if (ON)prophecy, [ey]in proportion to one’s faith; if [ez](OO)service, in the act of serving; or the one who (OP)teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who [fa](OQ)exhorts, in the work of [fb]exhortation; the one who gives, with [fc](OR)generosity; (OS)the one who [fd]is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with (OT)cheerfulness.

[fe](OU)Love must be free of hypocrisy. (OV)Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be (OW)devoted to one another in brotherly love; [ff]give preference to one another (OX)in honor, 11 not lagging behind in diligence, (OY)fervent in spirit, (OZ)serving the Lord; 12 (PA)rejoicing in hope, (PB)persevering in tribulation, (PC)devoted to prayer, 13 (PD)contributing to the needs of the [fg]saints, [fh](PE)practicing hospitality.

14 (PF)Bless those who persecute [fi]you; bless and do not curse. 15 (PG)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (PH)Be of the same mind toward one another; (PI)do not be [fj]haughty in mind, but [fk]associate with the lowly. (PJ)Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 (PK)Never repay evil for evil to anyone. [fl](PL)Respect what is right in the sight of all people. 18 If possible, (PM)so far as it depends on you, (PN)be at peace with all people. 19 (PO)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [fm]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “(PP)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 (PQ)But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Be Subject to Government

13 Every [fn](PR)person is to be (PS)subject to the governing authorities. For (PT)there is no authority except [fo]from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore [fp]whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For (PU)rulers are not a cause of fear for [fq]good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an (PV)avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also (PW)for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. (PX)Pay to all what is due them: (PY)tax to whom tax is due; (PZ)custom to whom custom; [fr]respect to whom [fs]respect; honor to whom honor.

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for (QA)the one who loves [ft]his neighbor has fulfilled the Law. For this, “(QB)You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “(QC)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love [fu]does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (QD)love is the fulfillment of the Law.

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is (QE)already the hour for you to (QF)awaken from sleep; for now [fv]salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed. 12 (QG)The night is almost gone, and (QH)the day is near. Therefore let’s rid ourselves of (QI)the deeds of darkness and put on (QJ)the armor of light. 13 Let’s [fw](QK)behave properly as in the day, (QL)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and debauchery, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But (QM)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (QN)in regard to its lusts.

Principles of Conscience

14 Now (QO)accept the one who is (QP)weak [fx]in faith, but not [fy]to have quarrels over opinions. (QQ)One person has faith that he may eat all things, but the one who is (QR)weak eats only vegetables. The one who eats is not to (QS)regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to (QT)judge the one who eats, for God has (QU)accepted him. (QV)Who are you to judge the [fz]servant of another? To his own [ga]master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

(QW)One person [gb]values one day over another, another [gc]values every day the same. Each person must be (QX)fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and the one who eats, [gd]does so with regard to the Lord, for he (QY)gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat, and he gives thanks to God. For not one of us (QZ)lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore (RA)whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end (RB)Christ died and lived again, that He might be (RC)Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 But as for you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you as well, why do you (RD)regard your brother or sister with contempt? For (RE)we will all appear before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written:

(RF)As I live, says the Lord, (RG)to Me every knee will bow,
And every tongue will [ge]give praise to God.”

12 So then (RH)each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

13 Therefore let’s not (RI)judge one another anymore, but rather [gf]determine this: (RJ)not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s or sister’s way. 14 I know and am convinced [gg]in the Lord Jesus that (RK)nothing is [gh]unclean in itself; but to the one who (RL)thinks something is [gi]unclean, to that person it is [gj]unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother or sister is hurt, you are no longer (RM)walking in accordance with love. (RN)Do not destroy with your choice of food that person for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore (RO)do not let what is for you a good thing be [gk]spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God (RP)is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (RQ)peace and (RR)joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For the one who (RS)serves Christ in this way is (RT)acceptable to God and approved by other people. 19 So then we (RU)pursue the things [gl]which make for peace and the (RV)building up of one another. 20 (RW)Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. (RX)All things indeed are clean, but (RY)they are evil for the person who eats [gm]and causes offense. 21 (RZ)It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother or sister stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have [gn]as your own conviction before God. Happy is the one who (SA)does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But (SB)the one who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

Self-denial in behalf of Others

15 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of (SC)those without strength, and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to (SD)please his neighbor [go]for his good, to his (SE)edification. For even (SF)Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written: “(SG)The taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on Me.” For (SH)whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Now may the (SI)God [gp]who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you (SJ)to be of the same mind with one another, according to Christ Jesus, so that with one purpose and one [gq]voice you may glorify (SK)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, [gr](SL)accept one another, just as Christ also accepted [gs]us, for the glory of God. For I say that Christ has become a servant to (SM)the circumcision in behalf of the truth of God, to confirm (SN)the promises given to the fathers, and for (SO)the Gentiles to (SP)glorify God for His mercy; as it is written:

(SQ)Therefore I will [gt]give praise to You among the Gentiles,
And I will sing praises to Your name.”

10 Again he says,

(SR)Rejoice, you Gentiles, with His people.”

11 And again,

(SS)Praise the Lord all you Gentiles,
And let all the peoples praise Him.”

12 Again Isaiah says,

(ST)There shall come (SU)the root of Jesse,
And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles,
(SV)In Him will the Gentiles hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all (SW)joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope (SX)by the power of the Holy Spirit.

14 And concerning you, my brothers and sisters, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of (SY)goodness, filled with (SZ)all knowledge and able also to admonish one another. 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (TA)the grace that was given to me [gu]from God, 16 to be (TB)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (TC)gospel of God, so that my (TD)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found (TE)reason for boasting in (TF)things pertaining to God. 18 (TG)For I will not presume to speak of anything [gv]except what (TH)Christ has accomplished through me, [gw]resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, 19 in the power of [gx](TI)signs and wonders, (TJ)in the power of the Spirit; so that (TK)from Jerusalem and all around as (TL)far as Illyricum I have [gy]fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And in this way I aspired to (TM)preach the gospel, not where Christ was already known by name, (TN)so that I would not build on another person’s foundation; 21 but just as it is written:

(TO)They who have not been told about Him will see,
And they who have not heard will understand.”

22 For this reason (TP)I have often been prevented from coming to you; 23 but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I (TQ)have had for many years a longing to come to you 24 whenever I (TR)go to Spain—for I hope to see you in passing, and to be (TS)helped on my way there by you, when I have first (TT)enjoyed your company [gz]for a while— 25 but now, (TU)I am going to Jerusalem, (TV)serving the [ha]saints. 26 For (TW)Macedonia and (TX)Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the [hb]saints in Jerusalem. 27 For they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For (TY)if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to do them a service also in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have finished this, and (TZ)have [hc]put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will (UA)go on by way of you to Spain. 29 I know that when (UB)I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.

30 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by (UC)the love of the Spirit, to (UD)strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be (UE)rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my (UF)service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the [hd](UG)saints; 32 so that (UH)I may come to you in joy by (UI)the will of God and relax in your company. 33 Now (UJ)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Greetings and Love Expressed

16 I (UK)recommend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a [he]servant of the church which is at (UL)Cenchrea, that you (UM)receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the [hf](UN)saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a helper of many, [hg]and of myself as well.

Greet (UO)Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers (UP)in (UQ)Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles; also greet (UR)the church that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the (US)first convert to Christ from [hh](UT)Asia. Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. Greet Andronicus and [hi]Junia, my (UU)kinsfolk and my (UV)fellow prisoners, who are outstanding in the view of the apostles, who also [hj]were (UW)in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker (UX)in Christ, and Stachys my beloved. 10 Greet Apelles, the approved (UY)in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion, my (UZ)kinsman. Greet those of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, workers in the Lord. Greet Persis the beloved, who has worked hard in the Lord. 13 Greet (VA)Rufus, a choice man in the Lord, also his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers and sisters with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all (VB)the [hk]saints who are with them. 16 (VC)Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

17 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and [hl]hindrances (VD)contrary to the teaching which you learned, and (VE)turn away from them. 18 For such people are (VF)slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of (VG)their own [hm]appetites; and by their (VH)smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19 For the report of your obedience (VI)has reached everyone; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but (VJ)I want you to be wise in what is good, and innocent in what is evil. 20 (VK)The God of peace will soon crush (VL)Satan under your feet.

(VM)The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

21 (VN)Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you, and so do (VO)Lucius, (VP)Jason, and (VQ)Sosipater, my (VR)kinsmen.

22 I, Tertius, who have (VS)written this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 (VT)Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. (VU)Erastus, the city treasurer, greets you, and Quartus, the brother.[hn]

25 (VV)Now to Him who is able to establish you (VW)according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of (VX)the mystery which has been kept secret for (VY)long ages past, 26 but now has been disclosed, and through (VZ)the Scriptures of the prophets, in accordance with the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to (WA)obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, (WB)be the glory forever. Amen.

Results of Justification

Therefore, since we have been justified [that is, acquitted of sin, declared blameless before God] by faith, [let us grasp the fact that] we have peace with God [and the joy of reconciliation with Him] through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed). Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our [a]hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power]. And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity); and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation]. Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

While we were still helpless [powerless to provide for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly. Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to willingly give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a good man [one who is noble and selfless and worthy] someone might even dare to die. But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Therefore, since we have now been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the [b]wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, it is much more certain, having been reconciled, that we will be saved [from the consequences of sin] by His life [that is, we will be saved because Christ lives today]. 11 Not only that, but we also rejoice in God [rejoicing in His love and perfection] through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received and enjoy our reconciliation [with God].(A)

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned. 13 Sin was [committed] in the world before the Law [was given], but sin is not charged [against anyone] when there is no law [against it]. 14 Yet death ruled [over mankind] from Adam to Moses [the Lawgiver], even over those who had not sinned [c]as Adam did. Adam is a type of Him (Christ) who was to come [but in reverse—Adam brought destruction, Christ brought salvation].(B)

15 But the free gift [of God] is not like the trespass [because the gift of grace overwhelms the fall of man]. For if many died by one man’s trespass [Adam’s sin], much more [abundantly] did God’s grace and the gift [that comes] by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to [benefit] the many. 16 Nor is the gift [of grace] like that which came through the one who sinned. For on the one hand the judgment [following the sin] resulted from one trespass and brought condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift resulted from many trespasses and brought justification [the release from sin’s penalty for those who believe]. 17 For if by the trespass of the one (Adam), death reigned through the one (Adam), much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in [eternal] life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through one trespass [Adam’s sin] there resulted condemnation for all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to [d]all men. 19 For just as through one man’s disobedience [his failure to hear, his carelessness] the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of the one Man the many will be made righteous and acceptable to God and brought into right standing with Him. 20 But the Law came to increase and expand [the awareness of] the trespass [by defining and unmasking sin]. But where sin increased, [God’s remarkable, gracious gift of] grace [His unmerited favor] has surpassed it and increased all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness which brings eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say [to all this]? Should we continue in sin and practice sin as a habit so that [God’s gift of] [e]grace may increase and overflow? Certainly not! How can we, the very ones who died to sin, continue to live in it any longer? Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been [f]baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways]. For if we have become one with Him [permanently united] in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be [one with Him and share fully] in the likeness of His resurrection. We know that our old [g]self [our human nature without the Holy Spirit] was nailed to the cross with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. For the person who has died [with Christ] has been freed from [the power of] sin.

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live [together] with Him, because we know [the self-evident truth] that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has power over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin [ending its power and paying the sinner’s debt] once and for all; and the life that He lives, He lives to [glorify] God [in unbroken fellowship with Him]. 11 Even so, consider yourselves to be dead to sin [and your relationship to it broken], but alive to God [in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts and passions. 13 Do not go on offering members of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness. But offer yourselves to God [in a decisive act] as those alive [raised] from the dead [to a new life], and your members [all of your abilities—sanctified, set apart] as instruments of righteousness [yielded] to God. 14 For sin will no longer be a master over you, since you are not under Law [as slaves], but under [unmerited] grace [as recipients of God’s favor and mercy].

15 What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under [God’s] grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that when you continually offer yourselves to someone to do his will, you are the slaves of the one whom you obey, either [slaves] of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness (right standing with God)? 17 But thank God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed. 18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the slaves of righteousness [of conformity to God’s will and purpose]. 19 I am speaking in [familiar] human terms because of your natural limitations [your spiritual immaturity]. For just as you presented your bodily members as slaves to impurity and to [moral] lawlessness, leading to further lawlessness, so now offer your members [your abilities, your talents] as slaves to righteousness, leading to [h]sanctification [that is, being set apart for God’s purpose].

20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness [you had no desire to conform to God’s will]. 21 So what benefit did you get at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? [None!] For the outcome of those things is death! 22 But now since you have been set free from sin and have become [willing] slaves to God, you have your benefit, resulting in sanctification [being made holy and set apart for God’s purpose], and the outcome [of this] is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, [i]brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the Law), that the Law has jurisdiction [to rule] over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman [as an example] is bound and remains bound by law to her husband while he lives; but if her husband dies, she is released and exempt from the law concerning her husband. Accordingly, she will be designated as an adulteress if she [j]unites herself to another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from the law [regarding marriage], so that she is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

Therefore, my [k]fellow believers, you too died to the Law through the [crucified] body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. When we were living in the flesh [trapped by sin], the sinful passions, which were awakened by [that which] the Law [identifies as sin], were at work in our body to bear fruit for death [since the willingness to sin led to death and separation from God]. But now we have been released from the Law and its penalty, having died [through Christ] to that by which we were held captive, so that we serve [God] in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter [of the Law].

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, if it had not been for the Law, I would not have recognized sin. For I would not have known [for example] about coveting [what belongs to another, and would have had no sense of guilt] if the Law had not [repeatedly] said, “You shall not covet.”(C) But sin, finding an opportunity through the commandment [to express itself] produced in me every kind of coveting and selfish desire. For without the Law sin is dead [the recognition of sin is inactive]. I was once alive without [knowledge of] the Law; but when the commandment came [and I understood its meaning], sin became alive and I died [since the Law sentenced me to death].(D) 10 And the very commandment which was intended to bring life, actually proved to bring death for me.(E) 11 For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, beguiled and completely deceived me, and [l]using it as a weapon killed me [separating me from God]. 12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good [the Law], then become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, in order that it might be revealed as sin, was producing death in me by [using] this good thing [as a weapon], so that through the commandment sin would become exceedingly sinful.

The Conflict of Two Natures

14 We know that the Law is spiritual, but I am a creature of the flesh [worldly, self-reliant—carnal and unspiritual], sold into slavery to sin [and serving under its control]. 15 For I do not understand my own actions [I am baffled and bewildered by them]. I do not practice what I want to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate [and yielding to my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. 16 Now if I habitually do what I do not want to do, [that means] I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good (morally excellent). 17 So now [if that is the case, then] it is no longer I who do it [the disobedient thing which I despise], but the sin [nature] which lives in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness—my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not. 19 For the good that I want to do, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want to do, I am no longer the one doing it [that is, it is not me that acts], but the sin [nature] which lives in me.

21 So I find it to be the law [of my inner self], that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully delight in the law of God in my inner self [with my new nature],(F) 23 but I see a different law and rule of action in the members of my body [in its appetites and desires], waging war against the law of my mind and subduing me and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is within my members. 24 Wretched and miserable man that I am! Who will [rescue me and] set me free from this body of death [this corrupt, mortal existence]? 25 Thanks be to God [for my deliverance] through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind serve the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness, my sinful capacity—I serve] the law of sin.

Escape from Bondage

Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].(G) For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do [that is, overcome sin and remove its penalty, its power] being weakened by the flesh [man’s nature without the Holy Spirit], God did: He sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man as an offering for sin. And He condemned sin in the flesh [subdued it and overcame it in the person of His own Son],(H) so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power]. For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—both now and forever]; the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.

However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God].(I) 10 If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.

12 So then, [m]brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but not to our flesh [our human nature, our worldliness, our sinful capacity], to live according to the [impulses of the] flesh [our nature without the Holy Spirit]— 13 for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever. 14 For all who are allowing themselves to be led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “[n]Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of God. 17 And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.(J)

18 For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us! 19 For [even the whole] creation [all nature] waits eagerly for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope(K) 21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now.(L) 23 And not only this, but we too, who have the first fruits of the Spirit [a joyful indication of the blessings to come], even we groan inwardly, as we wait eagerly for [the sign of] our adoption as sons—the redemption and transformation of our body [at the resurrection].(M) 24 For in this hope we were saved [by faith]. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait eagerly for it with patience and composure.

Our Victory in Christ

26 In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words. 27 And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of [o]God’s people in accordance with God’s will.(N)

28 And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew [and loved and chose beforehand], He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son [and ultimately share in His complete sanctification], so that He would be the firstborn [the most beloved and honored] among many believers. 30 And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified [declared free of the guilt of sin]; and those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity].

31 What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be [successful] against us?(O) 32 He who did not spare [even] His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect (His chosen ones)? It is God who justifies us [declaring us blameless and putting us in a right relationship with Himself]. 34 Who is the one who condemns us? Christ Jesus is the One who died [to pay our penalty], and more than that, who was raised [from the dead], and who is at the right hand of God interceding [with the Father] for us. 35 Who shall ever separate us from the love of [p]Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 Just as it is written and forever remains written,

For Your sake we are put to death all day long;
We are regarded as sheep for the slaughter.”(P)

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved us [so much that He died for us]. 38 For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Concern for Israel

I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me [enlightened and prompted] by the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For [if it were possible] I would wish that I myself were accursed, [separated, banished] from Christ for the sake [of the salvation] of my brothers, my natural kinsmen,(Q) who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, the glory ([q]Shekinah), the [special] covenants [with Abraham, Moses, and David], the giving of the Law, the [system of temple] worship, and the [original] promises.(R) To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to His natural descent, came the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), He who is exalted and supreme over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

However, it is not as though God’s word has failed [coming to nothing]. For not all who are descended from Israel (Jacob) are [the true] Israel; and they are not all the children of Abraham because they are his descendants [by blood], but [the promise was]: “Your descendants will be named through Isaac” [though Abraham had other sons].(S) That is, it is not the children of the body [Abraham’s natural descendants] who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are counted as [Abraham’s true] descendants. For this is what the promise said: “About this time [next year] I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”(T) 10 And not only that, but this too: Rebekah conceived twin sons by one man [under the same circumstances], by our father Isaac; 11 and though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything either good or bad, so that God’s purpose [His choice, His election] would stand, not because of works [done by either child], but because of [the plan of] Him who calls them, 12 it was said to her, “The [r]older (Esau) will serve the [s]younger (Jacob).”(U) 13 As it is written and forever remains written, “[t]Jacob I loved (chose, protected, blessed), but [u]Esau I hated (held in disregard compared to Jacob).”(V)

14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? Certainly not! 15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion.”(W) 16 So then God’s choice is not dependent on human will, nor on human effort [the totality of human striving], but on God who shows mercy [to whomever He chooses—it is His sovereign gift]. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “I raised you up for this very purpose, to display My power in [dealing with] you, and so that My name would be proclaimed in all the earth.”(X) 18 So then, He has mercy on whom He wills (chooses), and He hardens [the heart of] whom He wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still blame me [for sinning]? For who [including myself] has [ever] resisted His will and purpose?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers [arrogantly] back to God and dares to defy Him? Will the thing which is formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”(Y) 21 Does the potter not have the right over the clay, to make from the same lump [of clay] one object for honorable use [something beautiful or distinctive] and another for common use [something ordinary or menial]? 22 What if God, although willing to show His [terrible] wrath and to make His power known, has tolerated with great patience the objects of His wrath [which are] prepared for destruction?(Z) 23 And what if He has done so to make known the riches of His glory to the objects of His mercy, which He has prepared beforehand for glory, 24 including us, whom He also called, not only from among the Jews, but also from among the Gentiles? 25 Just as He says in [the writings of the prophet] Hosea:

I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’
And [I will call] her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”(AA)
26
And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’
There they shall be called sons of the living God.”(AB)

27 And Isaiah calls out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be like the sand of the sea, it is only the remnant [a small believing minority] that will be saved [from God’s judgment]; 28 For the Lord will execute His word upon the earth [He will conclude His dealings with mankind] completely and without delay.”(AC) 29 It is as Isaiah foretold,

If the Lord of Hosts had not left us seed [future generations from which a believing remnant of Israelites came],
We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah [totally rejected and destroyed]!”(AD)

30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness [who did not seek salvation and a right relationship with God, nevertheless] obtained righteousness, that is, the righteousness which is produced by faith; 31 whereas Israel, [though always] pursuing the law of righteousness, did not succeed in fulfilling the law.(AE) 32 And why not? Because it was not by faith [that they pursued it], but as though it were by works [relying on the merit of their works instead of their faith]. They stumbled over the stumbling Stone [Jesus Christ].(AF) 33 As it is written and forever remains written,

Behold I am laying in Zion a Stone of stumbling and a Rock of offense;
And he who believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will not be disappointed [in his expectations].”(AG)

The Word of Faith Brings Salvation

10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for Israel is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have a certain enthusiasm for God, but not in accordance with [correct and vital] knowledge [about Him and His purposes]. For not knowing about God’s righteousness [which is based on faith], and seeking to establish their own [righteousness based on works], they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law [it leads to Him and its purpose is fulfilled in Him], for [granting] righteousness to everyone who believes [in Him as Savior].

For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law [with all its intricate demands] shall live by it.(AH) But the righteousness based on faith [which produces a right relationship with Him] says the following: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into Heaven?’ that is, to bring Christ down; or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ that is, to bring Christ up from the dead [as if we had to be saved by our own efforts, doing the impossible].”(AI) But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word [the message, the basis] of faith which we preach—(AJ) because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will not be disappointed [in his expectations].”(AK) 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile; for the same Lord is Lord over all [of us], and [He is] abounding in riches (blessings) for all who call on Him [in faith and prayer]. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord [in prayer] will be saved.”(AL)

14 But how will people call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher (messenger)? 15 And how will they preach unless they are commissioned and sent [for that purpose]? Just as it is written and forever remains written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”(AM)

16 But they did not all pay attention to the good news [of salvation]; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”(AN) 17 So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.

18 But I say, did they not hear? Indeed they have;

Their voice [that of creation bearing God’s message] has gone out to all the earth,
And their words to the [farthest] ends of the world.”(AO)

19 But I say, did Israel fail to understand [that the gospel was to go also to the Gentiles]? First Moses says,

I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation (Gentiles);
With a nation that lacks understanding I will make you angry.”(AP)

20 Then Isaiah is very bold and says,

I have been found by those who did not seek Me;
I have shown Myself to those who did not [consciously] ask for Me.”(AQ)

21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have stretched out My hands [in compassion] to a disobedient and obstinate people.”(AR)

Israel Is Not Cast Away

11 I say then, has God rejected and disowned His people? Certainly not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.(AS) God has not rejected His [chosen] people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?(AT) “Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left [of the prophets], and they are seeking my life.” But what is God’s response to him? “I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”(AU) So too then, at the present time there has come to be a remnant [a small believing minority] according to God’s gracious choice. But if it is by grace [God’s unmerited favor], it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace [it would not be a gift but a reward for works].

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking [that is, God’s favor by obedience to the Law], but the elect [those chosen few] obtained it, while the rest of them became hardened and callously indifferent; just as it is written [in Scripture],

God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear,
[a spiritual apathy that has continued] to this very day.”(AV)

And David says,

Let their table (abundance) become a snare and a trap,
A stumbling block and a retribution to them.(AW)
10
Let their eyes be darkened so that they do not see,
And make their backs bend [under their burden] forever.”(AX)

11 So I say, have they stumbled so as to fall [to spiritual ruin]? Certainly not! But by their transgression [their rejection of the Messiah] salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous [when they realize what they have forfeited]. 12 Now if Israel’s transgression means riches for the world [at large] and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment and reinstatement be! 13 But now I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 in the hope of somehow making my fellow countrymen jealous [by stirring them up so that they will seek the truth] and perhaps save some of them. 15 For if their [present] rejection [of salvation] is for the reconciliation of the world [to God], what will their acceptance [of salvation] be but [nothing less than] life from the dead? 16 If the first portion [of dough offered as the first fruits] is holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root (Abraham, the patriarchs) is holy, so are the branches (the Israelites).(AY)

17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you [Gentiles], being like a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them to share with them the rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not boast over the [broken] branches and exalt yourself at their expense. If you do boast and feel superior, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root that supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by your faith [as believers understanding the truth of Christ’s deity]. Do not be conceited, but [rather stand in great awe of God and] fear [Him]; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches [because of unbelief], He will not spare you either. 22 Then appreciate the gracious kindness and the severity of God: to those who fell [into spiritual ruin], severity, but to you, God’s gracious kindness—if you continue in His kindness [by faith and obedience to Him]; otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even they [the unbelieving Jews], if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much easier will it be to graft these who are the natural branches back into [the original parent stock of] their own olive tree?

25 I do not want you, believers, to be unaware of this mystery [God’s previously hidden plan]—so that you will not be wise in your own opinion—that a partial hardening has [temporarily] happened to Israel [to last] until the full number of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so [at that time] all Israel [that is, all Jews who have a personal faith in Jesus as Messiah] will be saved; just as it is written [in Scripture],

The Deliverer (Messiah) will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”(AZ)
27
This is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”(BA)

28 From the standpoint of the gospel, the Jews [at present] are enemies [of God] for your sake [which is for your benefit], but from the standpoint of God’s choice [of the Jews as His people], they are still loved by Him for the sake of the fathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable [for He does not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call]. 30 Just as you once were disobedient and failed to listen to God, but have now obtained mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient so that they too may one day receive mercy because of the mercy shown to you. 32 For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all [Jew and Gentile alike].

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and decisions and how unfathomable and untraceable are His ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?(BB) 35 Or who has first given to Him that it would be paid back to him? 36 For from Him [all things originate] and through Him [all things live and exist] and to Him are all things [directed]. To Him be glory and honor forever! Amen.

Dedicated Service

12 [v]Therefore I urge you, [w]brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be [x]transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].

For by the grace [of God] given to me I say to everyone of you not to think more highly of himself [and of his importance and ability] than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has apportioned to each a degree of faith [and a purpose designed for service]. For just as in one [physical] body we have many parts, and these parts do not all have the same function or special use, so we, who are many, are [nevertheless just] one body in Christ, and individually [we are] parts one of another [mutually dependent on each other]. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them accordingly: if [someone has the gift of] prophecy, [let him speak a new message from God to His people] in proportion to the faith possessed; if service, in the act of serving; or he who teaches, in the act of teaching; or he who encourages, in the act of encouragement; he who gives, with generosity; he who leads, [y]with diligence; he who shows mercy [in caring for others], with cheerfulness.

Love is to be sincere and active [the real thing—without guile and hypocrisy]. Hate what is evil [detest all ungodliness, do not tolerate wickedness]; hold on tightly to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor; 11 never lagging behind in diligence; aglow in the Spirit, enthusiastically serving the Lord; 12 constantly rejoicing in hope [because of our confidence in Christ], steadfast and patient in distress, devoted to prayer [continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength], 13 contributing to the needs of God’s people, pursuing [the practice of] hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you [who cause you harm or hardship]; bless and do not curse [them].(BC) 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief]. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty [conceited, self-important, exclusive], but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself.(BD) 17 Never repay anyone evil for evil. Take thought for what is right and gracious and proper in the sight of everyone.(BE) 18 If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave the way open for God’s wrath [and His judicial righteousness]; for it is written [in Scripture], “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.(BF) 20 But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will heap [z]burning coals on his head.”(BG) 21 Do not be overcome and conquered by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Be Subject to Government

13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God [granted by His permission and sanction], and those which exist have been put in place by God.(BH) Therefore whoever [aa]resists [governmental] authority resists the ordinance of God. And those who have resisted it will bring judgment (civil penalty) on themselves. For [civil] authorities are not a source of fear for [people of] good behavior, but for [those who do] evil. Do you want to be unafraid of authority? Do what is good and you will receive approval and commendation. For he is God’s servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, [you should] be afraid; for he does not carry the [executioner’s] sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an avenger who brings punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be subject [to civil authorities], not only to escape the punishment [that comes with wrongdoing], but also as a matter of principle [knowing what is right before God]. For this same reason you pay taxes, for civil authorities are God’s servants, devoting themselves to governance. Pay to all what is due: tax to whom tax is due, customs to whom customs, respect to whom respect, honor to whom honor.

[ab]Owe nothing to anyone except to [ac]love and seek the best for one another; for he who [unselfishly] loves his neighbor has fulfilled the [essence of the] law [relating to one’s fellowman].(BI) The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,” and any other commandment are summed up in this statement: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”(BJ) 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor [it never hurts anyone]. Therefore [unselfish] love is the fulfillment of the Law.

11 Do this, knowing that this is a critical time. It is already the hour for you to awaken from your sleep [of spiritual complacency]; for our salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed [in Christ]. 12 The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light. 13 Let us conduct ourselves properly and honorably as in the [light of] day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for [nor even think about gratifying] the flesh in regard to its improper desires.

Principles of Conscience

14 As for the [ad]one whose faith is weak, accept him [into your fellowship], but not for [the purpose of] quarreling over his opinions. One man’s faith permits him to eat everything, while the weak believer eats only vegetables [to avoid eating ritually unclean meat or something previously considered unclean]. The one who eats [everything] is not to look down on the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat must not criticize or pass judgment on the one who eats [everything], for God has accepted him. Who are you to judge the servant of another? Before his own master he stands [approved] or falls [out of favor]. And he [who serves the Master—the Lord] will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

One person regards one day as better [or more important] than another, while another regards every day [the same as any other]. Let everyone be fully convinced (assured, satisfied) in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord. He who eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while he who abstains, abstains for the Lord and gives thanks to God. None of us lives for himself [for his own benefit, but for the Lord], and none of us dies for himself [but for the Lord]. If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. So then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For Christ died and lived again for this reason, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you again, why do you look down on your [believing] brother or regard him with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God [who alone is judge]. 11 For it is written [in Scripture],

As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall give praise to God.”(BK)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

13 Then let us not criticize one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block or a source of temptation in another believer’s way. 14 I know and am convinced [as one] in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean [ritually defiled, and unholy] in itself; but [nonetheless] it is unclean to anyone who thinks it is unclean. 15 If your brother is being hurt or offended because of food [that you insist on eating], you are no longer walking in love [toward him]. Do not let what you eat destroy and spiritually harm one for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what is a good thing for you [because of your freedom to choose] be spoken of as evil [by someone else]; 17 for the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking [what one likes], but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For the one who serves Christ in this way [recognizing that food choice is secondary] is acceptable to God and is approved by men. 19 So then, let us pursue [with enthusiasm] the things which make for peace and the building up of one another [things which lead to spiritual growth]. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, tear down the work of God. All things indeed are [ceremonially] clean, but they are wrong for the person who eats and offends [another’s conscience in the process]. 21 It is good [to do the right thing and] not eat meat or drink wine, or do anything that offends your brother and weakens him spiritually. 22 The faith which you have [that gives you freedom of choice], have as your own conviction before God [just keep it between yourself and God, seeking His will]. Happy is he who has no reason to condemn himself for what he approves. 23 But he who is uncertain [about eating a particular thing] is condemned if he eats, because he is not acting from faith. Whatever is not from faith is sin [whatever is done with doubt is sinful].

Self-denial on Behalf of Others

15 Now we who are strong [in our convictions and faith] ought to [patiently] put up with the weaknesses of those who are not strong, and not just please ourselves. Let each one of us [make it a practice to] please his [ae]neighbor for his good, to build him up spiritually. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written [in Scripture], “The reproaches of those who reproached You (the Father) fell on Me (the Son).”(BL) For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope and overflow with confidence in His promises. Now may the God who gives endurance and who supplies encouragement grant that you be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify and praise and honor the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, [continue to] accept and welcome one another, just as Christ has accepted and welcomed us to the glory of [our great] God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant and a minister to the circumcision (Jews) on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm and verify the promises made to the fathers, and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy [to them, since God had no covenant with them]. As it is written and forever remains written,

Therefore I praise You among the Gentiles,
And sing praises to Your name.”(BM)

10 Again it says,

Rejoice and celebrate, O Gentiles, along with His people.”(BN)

11 And again,

Praise the Lord all you Gentiles,
And let all the peoples praise Him!”(BO)

12 Again Isaiah says,

There shall be a root of [af]Jesse,
He who arises to rule [as King] over the Gentiles,
In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”(BP)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises.

14 Personally I am convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, amply filled with all [spiritual] knowledge, and competent to admonish and counsel and instruct one another. 15 Still, on some points I have written to you very boldly and without reservation to remind you [about them] again, because of the grace that was given to me from God, 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I minister as a priest the gospel of God, in order that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable [to Him], sanctified [made holy and set apart for His purpose] by the Holy Spirit. 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have found [legitimate] reason for boasting in things related [to my service] to God. 18 For I will not [even] presume to speak of anything except what Christ has done through me [as an instrument in His hands], resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles [to the gospel], by word and deed, 19 with the power of signs and wonders, [and all of it] in the power of the Spirit. So [starting] from Jerusalem and as far away as [ag]Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel [faithfully preaching the good news] of Christ [where it had not before been preached]. 20 Accordingly I set a goal to preach the gospel, not where Christ’s name was already known, so that I would not build on another man’s foundation; 21 but [instead I would act on this goal] as it is written [in Scripture],

They who had no news of Him shall see,
And they who have not heard [of Him] shall understand.”(BQ)

22 This [goal—my commitment to this principle] is the reason why I have often been prevented from coming to you [in Rome]. 23 But now, with no further place for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you— 24 whenever I go [on my trip] to Spain—I hope to see you as I pass through [Rome], and to be helped on my journey there by you, after I have first enjoyed your company for a little while. 25 But for now, I am going to Jerusalem to serve the saints (Jewish believers). 26 For [Gentile believers in] [ah]Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints (Jewish believers) in Jerusalem. 27 They were pleased to do it, and they are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual things, then they are indebted to serve them also in [tangible] material things. 28 Therefore, when I have finished this [mission] and have safely given to them what has been raised, I will go on by way of you to Spain. 29 I know that when I do come to you, I will come in the abundant blessing of Christ.

30 I urge you, believers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join together with me in your prayers to God in my behalf, 31 [and pray] that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints (Jewish believers) there; 32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and find rest in your company. 33 May the God of peace be with you all! Amen.

Greetings and Love Expressed

16 Now I introduce and commend to you our sister [ai]Phoebe, a deaconess (servant) of the church at [aj]Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord [with love and hospitality], as [ak]God’s people ought to receive one another. And that you may help her in whatever matter she may require assistance from you, for she has been a helper of many, including myself.

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks [endangering their very lives] for my life. To them not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Also greet the church that meets in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the first convert to Christ from [the west coast province of] Asia [Minor]. Greet Mary, who has worked so hard for you. Greet Andronicus and [al]Junias, my kinsmen and [once] my fellow prisoners, who are held in high esteem [am]in the estimation of the apostles, and who were [believers] in Christ before me. Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles, the one tested and approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the household of [an]Aristobulus. 11 Greet my kinsman Herodion. Greet those of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord. 12 Greet those workers in the Lord, Tryphaena and Tryphosa. Greet my beloved Persis, who has worked hard in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, an eminent and choice man in the Lord, also his mother [who has been] a mother to me as well. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers who are with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all [ao]God’s people who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a [ap]holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to keep your eyes on those who cause dissensions and create obstacles or introduce temptations [for others] to commit sin, [acting in ways] contrary to the doctrine which you have learned. Turn away from them. 18 For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites and base desires. By smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting [the innocent and the naive]. 19 For the report of your obedience has reached everyone, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

The [wonderful] grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

21 Timothy, my fellow worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.

22 I, [aq]Tertius, the writer (scribe) of this letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church here, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you. 24 [ar][The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.]

25 Now to Him who is able to establish and strengthen you [in the faith] according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery [of the plan of salvation] which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now has been disclosed and through the prophetic Scriptures has been made known to all the nations, according to the commandment of the eternal God, leading them to obedience to the faith, 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forevermore! Amen.

Footnotes

  1. Romans 5:2 In the NT the word “hope” expresses a cherished desire along with the confident assurance of obtaining that which is longed for.
  2. Romans 5:9 The “wrath of God,” with the definite article in Greek, anticipates the outpouring of God’s wrath on rebellious sinners in the tribulation period (cf Rev 6:16, 17).
  3. Romans 5:14 Lit in the likeness of Adam’s transgression.
  4. Romans 5:18 Salvation is available to all people who respond and place their personal trust in Christ.
  5. Romans 6:1 Grace justifies believers, making them free of the guilt of sin, blameless, so that they may have eternal life.
  6. Romans 6:3 “Baptize” is a transliteration of the Greek word baptizo, which means to submerge an object into liquid. In this passage Christ becomes the liquid, metaphorically, and those who are baptized into Him remain in Him forever and benefit from His experiences, including His death. The best news is that Jesus was resurrected, so believers will also experience resurrection (those who are alive when Christ returns will experience a physical transformation). But even now believers experience a kind of resurrection in that they live new lives (as Paul says, “walk in newness of life”) in a wonderful new relationship with God and their fellow believers.
  7. Romans 6:6 Gr anthropos, i.e. man, person.
  8. Romans 6:19 There are three basic kinds of sanctification in the NT: (1) Positional sanctification is based on the death of Christ. Every believer is a saint and is holy before God. The believer is “set apart for God” and in some instances “set apart for God’s purpose” (Heb 10:10, 14, 29); (2) Practical sanctification is a progressive process and means “growing in righteous living” as the believer matures spiritually (Rom 6:13; 1 Thess 5:23; 1 Pet 1:16); (3) Ultimate sanctification is that which is to come when the believer stands before God (Eph 5:26, 27).
  9. Romans 7:1 Lit brethren.
  10. Romans 7:3 Lit becomes another man’s, probably referring to an illicit, sexual relationship. Paul uses the same language at the end of the verse, but there he probably means sexual intimacy within a new marriage.
  11. Romans 7:4 Lit brethren.
  12. Romans 7:11 Lit through it killed me.
  13. Romans 8:12 Lit brethren.
  14. Romans 8:15 An Aramaic word used by young children when addressing their fathers, but not used by Jews in prayer because it implies a sense of familiarity. Jesus’ use of the word emphasized his Father-Son relationship with God.
  15. Romans 8:27 Lit the saints.
  16. Romans 8:35 Two early mss read God.
  17. Romans 9:4 The Hebrew word “Shekinah” (“divine presence”) does not appear in Scripture, but has been used by both Christians and Jews to describe the visible Presence of God (the brilliant light of the divine), in such things as the burning bush, the cloud and the pillar of fire that led the Hebrews in the wilderness, and the Presence of God that rested between the cherubim over the mercy seat of the ark. It is said in the Talmud that the Emperor Hadrian once told a rabbi, “I want to see your God.” The rabbi replied, “You cannot see him.” “Indeed,” said the Emperor, “I will see him.” So the rabbi took the Emperor and positioned him to face the sun during the summer solstice, and said to him, “Look at it.” He replied, “I am not able to.” The rabbi said, “If you are not able to look at the sun, which is merely one of the servants that attend the Holy One—blessed be He—then how can you presume to look at the divine presence!”
  18. Romans 9:12 The descendants of Esau, the Edomites.
  19. Romans 9:12 The descendants of Jacob (Israel), the Israelites.
  20. Romans 9:13 The Israelites received God’s protection and blessing.
  21. Romans 9:13 The Edomites were left to God’s judgment.
  22. Romans 12:1 Paul now begins outlining for the believer the practical application of the theological truths taught in chs 1-11.
  23. Romans 12:1 Lit brethren.
  24. Romans 12:2 From the Greek word meaning “metamorphosis.” Refers to the process that leads to an outward, permanent change.
  25. Romans 12:8 Or without ulterior motives.
  26. Romans 12:20 This may refer to an ancient Egyptian custom in which a penitent person carried a bowl of burning embers on his head to show his shame and guilt. By analogy, being kind to an enemy may lead him to shame and repentance.
  27. Romans 13:2 An exception to this is recorded in Acts 5:27-29. See especially v 29.
  28. Romans 13:8 Debt is generally to be avoided, but Paul probably is addressing debt to individuals with whom one has a personal relationship.
  29. Romans 13:8 The key to understanding this and other statements about love is to know that this love (the Greek word agape) is not so much a matter of emotion as it is of doing things for the benefit of another person, that is, having an unselfish concern for another and a willingness to seek the best for other believers.
  30. Romans 14:1 Some Jewish believers may have struggled with abandoning all the old requirements of the Law regarding eating things considered unclean, while some Gentile believers may have been overly sensitive to anything associated with paganism, such as eating meat offered to idols.
  31. Romans 15:2 I.e. all those with whom we have contact.
  32. Romans 15:12 Jesse was the father of David the king, and Jesus (the Messiah) was a descendant of David.
  33. Romans 15:19 Located nearly 1,400 miles from Jerusalem, Illyricum was a Roman province of economic and strategic importance. It was a large region north of Macedonia located between the Adriatic Sea and the Danube River, and was known for its commercial seaports and gold mines. The great Roman road, Via Egnatia, started in Illyricum and ran eastward to Byzantium.
  34. Romans 15:26 In addition to Macedonia and Achaia some churches in Asia Minor also contributed to this offering.
  35. Romans 16:1 Phoebe (“bright,” “pure”) was chosen by Paul as his emissary to deliver this letter to Rome. She may have held a recognized position within the church.
  36. Romans 16:1 Cenchrea, a few miles east of Corinth, served as Corinth’s port and was probably visited by Paul during both his second and third missionary journeys. This letter was written from Corinth near the end of the third journey.
  37. Romans 16:2 Lit the saints.
  38. Romans 16:7 Or Junia (feminine). There is a higher probability that the name is feminine; no masculine forms found in this or near time periods.
  39. Romans 16:7 The Greek and larger context favor this understanding; Andronicus and Junia are not identified as apostles here.
  40. Romans 16:10 Believed by some scholars to be the brother of Herod Agrippa I and grandson of Herod the Great.
  41. Romans 16:15 Lit the saints.
  42. Romans 16:16 A traditional act of salutation in the early church.
  43. Romans 16:22 Paul’s helper, who wrote this letter as Paul dictated it, inserted a personal greeting, undoubtedly with Paul’s permission.
  44. Romans 16:24 Early mss do not contain this verse; it was taken from the Latin Vulgate.

Peace with God Through Faith

(A)Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, (B)we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also (C)obtained access by faith[b] into this grace (D)in which we stand, and (E)we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we (F)rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering (G)produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and (H)hope does not put us to shame, because God's love (I)has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For (J)while we were still weak, at the right time (K)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but (L)God shows his love for us in that (M)while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, (N)we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from (O)the wrath of God. 10 For if (P)while we were enemies (Q)we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by (R)his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (S)reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as (T)sin came into the world through one man, and (U)death through sin, and (V)so death spread to all men[e] because (W)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (X)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (Y)like the transgression of Adam, (Z)who was a type of (AA)the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (AB)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (AC)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (AD)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (AE)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[f] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[g] leads to justification and life for (AF)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (AG)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (AH)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (AI)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (AJ)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (AK)as sin reigned in death, (AL)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (AM)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can (AN)we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us (AO)who have been baptized (AP)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were (AQ)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as (AR)Christ was raised from the dead by (AS)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in (AT)newness of life.

For (AU)if we have been united with him in (AV)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that (AW)our old self[h] (AX)was crucified with him in order that (AY)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For (AZ)one who has died (BA)has been set free[i] from sin. Now (BB)if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that (BC)Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; (BD)death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, (BE)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves (BF)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not (BG)sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 (BH)Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but (BI)present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For (BJ)sin (BK)will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? (BL)Are we to sin (BM)because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves (BN)to anyone as obedient slaves,[j] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But (BO)thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the (BP)standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, (BQ)having been set free from sin, (BR)have become slaves of righteousness. 19 (BS)I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For (BT)just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members (BU)as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

20 (BV)For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 (BW)But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things (BX)of which you are now ashamed? (BY)For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you (BZ)have been set free from sin and (CA)have become slaves of God, (CB)the fruit you get leads to sanctification and (CC)its end, eternal life. 23 (CD)For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Released from the Law

Or do you not know, brothers[k]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? For (CE)a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.[l] Accordingly, (CF)she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

Likewise, my brothers, (CG)you also have died (CH)to the law (CI)through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, (CJ)in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work (CK)in our members (CL)to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the (CM)new way of (CN)the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.[m]

The Law and Sin

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, (CO)I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if (CP)the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, (CQ)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. (CR)For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment (CS)that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, (CT)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, (CU)deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So (CV)the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, (CW)sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For (CX)I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with (CY)the law, that it is good. 17 So now (CZ)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells (DA)in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 (DB)For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, (DC)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For (DD)I delight in the law of God, (DE)in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members (DF)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from (DG)this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Life in the Spirit

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.[n] For the law of (DH)the Spirit of life (DI)has set you[o] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For (DJ)God has done what the law, (DK)weakened by the flesh, (DL)could not do. (DM)By sending his own Son (DN)in the likeness of sinful flesh and (DO)for sin,[p] he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that (DP)the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, (DQ)who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For (DR)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on (DS)the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on (DT)the things of the Spirit. For to set (DU)the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is (DV)hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; (DW)indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact (DX)the Spirit of God dwells in you. (DY)Anyone who does not have (DZ)the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of (EA)him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[q] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies (EB)through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Heirs with Christ

12 So then, brothers,[r] we are debtors, (EC)not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you (ED)put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (EE)led by the Spirit of God are (EF)sons[s] of God. 15 For (EG)you did not receive (EH)the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of (EI)adoption as sons, by whom we cry, (EJ)“Abba! Father!” 16 (EK)The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then (EL)heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (EM)provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Future Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (EN)are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for (EO)the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation (EP)was subjected to futility, not willingly, but (EQ)because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that (ER)the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that (ES)the whole creation (ET)has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have (EU)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (EV)groan inwardly as (EW)we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, (EX)the redemption of our bodies. 24 For (EY)in this hope we were saved. Now (EZ)hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we (FA)wait for it with patience.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For (FB)we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but (FC)the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And (FD)he who searches hearts knows what is (FE)the mind of the Spirit, because[t] the Spirit (FF)intercedes for the saints (FG)according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together (FH)for good,[u] for (FI)those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he (FJ)foreknew he also (FK)predestined (FL)to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be (FM)the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also (FN)justified, and those whom he justified he also (FO)glorified.

God's Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? (FP)If God is for us, who can be[v] against us? 32 (FQ)He who did not spare his own Son but (FR)gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? (FS)It is God who justifies. 34 (FT)Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—(FU)who is at the right hand of God, (FV)who indeed is interceding for us.[w] 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

(FW)“For your sake (FX)we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than (FY)conquerors through (FZ)him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God's Sovereign Choice

(GA)I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For (GB)I could wish that I myself were (GC)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,[x] my kinsmen (GD)according to the flesh. They are (GE)Israelites, and to them belong (GF)the adoption, (GG)the glory, (GH)the covenants, (GI)the giving of the law, (GJ)the worship, and (GK)the promises. To them belong (GL)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, (GM)who is God over all, (GN)blessed forever. Amen.

But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham (GO)because they are his offspring, but (GP)“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but (GQ)the children of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what the promise said: (GR)“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but (GS)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of (GT)him who calls— 12 she was told, (GU)“The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, (GV)“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14 What shall we say then? (GW)Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, (GX)“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[y] but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, (GY)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For (GZ)who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, (HA)to answer back to God? (HB)Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 (HC)Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump (HD)one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience (HE)vessels of wrath (HF)prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known (HG)the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he (HH)has prepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he (HI)has called, (HJ)not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,

(HK)“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’
and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”
26 (HL)“And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called (HM)‘sons of the living God.’”

27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: (HN)“Though the number of the sons of Israel[z] be as the sand of the sea, (HO)only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29 And as Isaiah predicted,

(HP)(HQ)“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
(HR)we would have been like Sodom
    and become like Gomorrah.”

Israel's Unbelief

30 What shall we say, then? (HS)That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, (HT)a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but that Israel (HU)who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness[aa] (HV)did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the (HW)stumbling stone, 33 as it is written,

(HX)“Behold, I am laying in Zion (HY)a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
(HZ)and whoever believes in him will not be (IA)put to shame.”

10 Brothers,[ab] my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that (IB)they have a zeal for God, (IC)but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of (ID)the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For (IE)Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.[ac]

The Message of Salvation to All

For (IF)Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that (IG)the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But (IH)the righteousness based on faith says, (II)“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the (IJ)abyss?’” (that is, (IK)to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? (IL)“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if (IM)you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and (IN)believe in your heart (IO)that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, (IP)“Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 (IQ)For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; (IR)for the same Lord is Lord of all, (IS)bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For (IT)“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him (IU)of whom they have never heard?[ad] And how are they to hear (IV)without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, (IW)“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But (IX)they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, (IY)“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So (IZ)faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for

(JA)“Their voice has gone out (JB)to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.”

19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

(JC)“I will (JD)make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a (JE)foolish nation I will make you angry.”

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

(JF)“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”

21 But of Israel he says, (JG)“All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask, then, (JH)has God rejected his people? By no means! For (JI)I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham,[ae] a member of the tribe of Benjamin. (JJ)God has not rejected his people whom he (JK)foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? (JL)“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God's reply to him? (JM)“I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is (JN)a remnant, chosen by grace. (JO)But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

What then? (JP)Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest (JQ)were hardened, as it is written,

(JR)“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
    (JS)eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day.”

And David says,

(JT)“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
    a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
10 let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
    and bend their backs forever.”

Gentiles Grafted In

11 So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass (JU)salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. 12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion[af] mean!

13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as (JV)I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and (JW)thus save some of them. 15 For if their rejection means (JX)the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? 16 (JY)If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 But if (JZ)some of the branches were broken off, and you, (KA)although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root[ag] of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. 19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you (KB)stand fast through faith. So (KC)do not become proud, but (KD)fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, (KE)provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise (KF)you too will be cut off. 23 And (KG)even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

The Mystery of Israel's Salvation

25 (KH)Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers:[ah] (KI)a partial hardening has come upon Israel, (KJ)until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

(KK)“The Deliverer will come (KL)from Zion,
    he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
27 “and this will be my (KM)covenant with them
(KN)when I take away their sins.”

28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are (KO)beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and (KP)the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as (KQ)you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now[ai] receive mercy. 32 For God (KR)has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and (KS)wisdom and knowledge of God! (KT)How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For (KU)who has known the mind of the Lord,
or (KV)who has been his counselor?”
35 “Or (KW)who has given a gift to him
    that he might be repaid?”

36 For (KX)from him and through him and to him are all things. (KY)To him be glory forever. Amen.

A Living Sacrifice

12 (KZ)I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[aj] by the mercies of God, (LA)to present your bodies (LB)as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[ak] (LC)Do not be conformed to this world,[al] but be transformed by (LD)the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may (LE)discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[am]

Gifts of Grace

For (LF)by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (LG)not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, (LH)each according to (LI)the measure of faith that God has assigned. For (LJ)as in one body we have many members,[an] and the members do not all have the same function, so we, (LK)though many, (LL)are one body in Christ, and individually (LM)members one of another. (LN)Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if (LO)prophecy, (LP)in proportion to our faith; if (LQ)service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; (LR)the one who leads,[ao] with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with (LS)cheerfulness.

Marks of the True Christian

(LT)Let love be genuine. (LU)Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 (LV)Love one another with brotherly affection. (LW)Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, (LX)be fervent in spirit,[ap] (LY)serve the Lord. 12 (LZ)Rejoice in hope, (MA)be patient in tribulation, (MB)be constant in prayer. 13 (MC)Contribute to the needs of the saints and (MD)seek to show hospitality.

14 (ME)Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 (MF)Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 (MG)Live in harmony with one another. (MH)Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.[aq] (MI)Never be wise in your own sight. 17 (MJ)Repay no one evil for evil, but (MK)give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, (ML)live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, (MM)never avenge yourselves, but leave it[ar] to the wrath of God, for it is written, (MN)“Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, (MO)“if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Submission to the Authorities

13 Let every person (MP)be subject to the governing authorities. For (MQ)there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you (MR)will receive his approval, for (MS)he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, (MT)an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also (MU)for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. (MV)Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

(MW)Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for (MX)the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, (MY)“You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: (MZ)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (NA)love is the fulfilling of the law.

11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you (NB)to wake from sleep. (NC)For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 (ND)The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us (NE)cast off (NF)the works of darkness and (NG)put on the armor of light. 13 (NH)Let us walk properly as in the daytime, (NI)not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, (NJ)not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But (NK)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, (NL)to gratify its desires.

Do Not Pass Judgment on One Another

14 As for (NM)the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. (NN)One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and (NO)let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. (NP)Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master[as] that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

(NQ)One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. (NR)Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since (NS)he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For (NT)none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, (NU)whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ (NV)died and lived again, that he might be Lord both (NW)of the dead and of the living.

10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For (NX)we will all stand before (NY)the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written,

(NZ)“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall confess[at] to God.”

12 So then (OA)each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Do Not Cause Another to Stumble

13 (OB)Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide (OC)never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus (OD)that nothing is unclean in itself, (OE)but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, (OF)you are no longer walking in love. (OG)By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 (OH)So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 (OI)For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but (OJ)of righteousness and (OK)peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Peace and Hope

Therefore, since we have been justified(A) through faith,(B) we[a] have peace(C) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,(D) through whom we have gained access(E) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.(F) And we[b] boast in the hope(G) of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings,(H) because we know that suffering produces perseverance;(I) perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope(J) does not put us to shame, because God’s love(K) has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,(L) who has been given to us.

You see, at just the right time,(M) when we were still powerless,(N) Christ died for the ungodly.(O) Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(P)

Since we have now been justified(Q) by his blood,(R) how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath(S) through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies,(T) we were reconciled(U) to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!(V) 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.(W)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(X) and death through sin,(Y) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(Z)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(AA) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(AB) who is a pattern of the one to come.(AC)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(AD) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(AE) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(AF) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(AG) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(AH) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(AI) and life(AJ) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(AK) the many were made sinners,(AL) so also through the obedience(AM) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(AN) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(AO) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(AP) so also grace(AQ) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(AR) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

What shall we say, then?(AS) Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?(AT) By no means! We are those who have died to sin;(AU) how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized(AV) into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death(AW) in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead(AX) through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(AY)

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.(AZ) For we know that our old self(BA) was crucified with him(BB) so that the body ruled by sin(BC) might be done away with,[d] that we should no longer be slaves to sin(BD) because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.(BE)

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.(BF) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,(BG) he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.(BH) 10 The death he died, he died to sin(BI) once for all;(BJ) but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin(BK) but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign(BL) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,(BM) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.(BN) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master,(BO) because you are not under the law,(BP) but under grace.(BQ)

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?(BR) By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey(BS)—whether you are slaves to sin,(BT) which leads to death,(BU) or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God(BV) that, though you used to be slaves to sin,(BW) you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching(BX) that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin(BY) and have become slaves to righteousness.(BZ)

19 I am using an example from everyday life(CA) because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness(CB) leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin,(CC) you were free from the control of righteousness.(CD) 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!(CE) 22 But now that you have been set free from sin(CF) and have become slaves of God,(CG) the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.(CH) 23 For the wages of sin is death,(CI) but the gift of God is eternal life(CJ) in[e] Christ Jesus our Lord.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ

Do you not know, brothers and sisters(CK)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(CL) So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(CM) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(CN) through the body of Christ,(CO) that you might belong to another,(CP) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[f](CQ) the sinful passions aroused by the law(CR) were at work in us,(CS) so that we bore fruit for death.(CT) But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(CU) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(CV)

The Law and Sin

What shall we say, then?(CW) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(CX) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(CY) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[g](CZ) But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(DA) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(DB) Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(DC) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(DD) deceived me,(DE) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(DF)

13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(DG) to bring about my death,(DH) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(DI) sold(DJ) as a slave to sin.(DK) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(DL) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(DM) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(DN) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[h](DO) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(DP) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(DQ)

21 So I find this law at work:(DR) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(DS) I delight in God’s law;(DT) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(DU) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(DV) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(DW) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(DX)

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(DY) but in my sinful nature[i] a slave to the law of sin.(DZ)

Life Through the Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation(EA) for those who are in Christ Jesus,(EB) because through Christ Jesus(EC) the law of the Spirit who gives life(ED) has set you[j] free(EE) from the law of sin(EF) and death. For what the law was powerless(EG) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[k](EH) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(EI) to be a sin offering.[l](EJ) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement(EK) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(EL)

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(EM) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(EN) The mind governed by the flesh is death,(EO) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(EP) and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(EQ) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(ER) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(ES) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(ET) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(EU) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(EV) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[m] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(EW) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(EX) because of[n] his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(EY) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(EZ) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(FA) you will live.(FB)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(FC) are the children of God.(FD) 15 The Spirit(FE) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(FF) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[o] And by him we cry, “Abba,[p] Father.”(FG) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(FH) that we are God’s children.(FI) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(FJ)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(FK) in order that we may also share in his glory.(FL)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(FM) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(FN) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,(FO) in hope 21 that[q] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay(FP) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.(FQ)

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning(FR) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,(FS) groan(FT) inwardly as we wait eagerly(FU) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.(FV) 24 For in this hope we were saved.(FW) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.(FX) Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.(FY)

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit(FZ) himself intercedes for us(GA) through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts(GB) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes(GC) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good(GD) of those who love him, who[r] have been called(GE) according to his purpose.(GF) 29 For those God foreknew(GG) he also predestined(GH) to be conformed to the image of his Son,(GI) that he might be the firstborn(GJ) among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined,(GK) he also called;(GL) those he called, he also justified;(GM) those he justified, he also glorified.(GN)

More Than Conquerors

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things?(GO) If God is for us,(GP) who can be against us?(GQ) 32 He who did not spare his own Son,(GR) but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge(GS) against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns?(GT) No one. Christ Jesus who died(GU)—more than that, who was raised to life(GV)—is at the right hand of God(GW) and is also interceding for us.(GX) 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?(GY) Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?(GZ) 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[s](HA)

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors(HB) through him who loved us.(HC) 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[t] neither the present nor the future,(HD) nor any powers,(HE) 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God(HF) that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.(HG)

Paul’s Anguish Over Israel

I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying,(HH) my conscience confirms(HI) it through the Holy Spirit— I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself(HJ) were cursed(HK) and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people,(HL) those of my own race,(HM) the people of Israel.(HN) Theirs is the adoption to sonship;(HO) theirs the divine glory,(HP) the covenants,(HQ) the receiving of the law,(HR) the temple worship(HS) and the promises.(HT) Theirs are the patriarchs,(HU) and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah,(HV) who is God over all,(HW) forever praised![u](HX) Amen.

God’s Sovereign Choice

It is not as though God’s word(HY) had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.(HZ) Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[v](IA) In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children,(IB) but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.(IC) For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”[w](ID)

10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.(IE) 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad(IF)—in order that God’s purpose(IG) in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”[x](IH) 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”[y](II)

14 What then shall we say?(IJ) Is God unjust? Not at all!(IK) 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[z](IL)

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.(IM) 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[aa](IN) 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.(IO)

19 One of you will say to me:(IP) “Then why does God still blame us?(IQ) For who is able to resist his will?”(IR) 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God?(IS) “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,(IT) ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[ab](IU) 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?(IV)

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience(IW) the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?(IX) 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory(IY) known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory(IZ) 24 even us, whom he also called,(JA) not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?(JB) 25 As he says in Hosea:

“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;
and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”[ac](JC)

26 and,

“In the very place where it was said to them,
    ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”[ad](JD)

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:

“Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,(JE)
only the remnant will be saved.(JF)
28 For the Lord will carry out
his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”[ae](JG)

29 It is just as Isaiah said previously:

“Unless the Lord Almighty(JH)
    had left us descendants,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.”[af](JI)

Israel’s Unbelief

30 What then shall we say?(JJ) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;(JK) 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,(JL) have not attained their goal.(JM) 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.(JN) 33 As it is written:

“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[ag](JO)

10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire(JP) and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous(JQ) for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.(JR) Christ is the culmination of the law(JS) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.(JT)

Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”[ah](JU) But the righteousness that is by faith(JV) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[ai](JW) (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[aj](JX) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).(JY) But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[ak](JZ) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare(KA) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(KB) and believe(KC) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,(KD) you will be saved.(KE) 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[al](KF) 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile(KG)—the same Lord is Lord of all(KH) and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord(KI) will be saved.”[am](KJ)

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”[an](KK)

16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news.(KL) For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”[ao](KM) 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,(KN) and the message is heard through the word about Christ.(KO) 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:

“Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.”[ap](KP)

19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says,

“I will make you envious(KQ) by those who are not a nation;
I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.”[aq](KR)

20 And Isaiah boldly says,

“I was found by those who did not seek me;
I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.”[ar](KS)

21 But concerning Israel he says,

“All day long I have held out my hands
to a disobedient and obstinate people.”[as](KT)

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!(KU) I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,(KV) from the tribe of Benjamin.(KW) God did not reject his people,(KX) whom he foreknew.(KY) Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”[at]?(KZ) And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”[au](LA) So too, at the present time there is a remnant(LB) chosen by grace.(LC) And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;(LD) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.(LE) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,(LF) as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
    eyes that could not see
and ears that could not hear,(LG)
to this very day.”[av](LH)

And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,(LI)
and their backs be bent forever.”[aw](LJ)

Ingrafted Branches

11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all!(LK) Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles(LL) to make Israel envious.(LM) 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,(LN) how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,(LO) I take pride in my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy(LP) and save(LQ) some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation(LR) to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?(LS) 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits(LT) is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 If some of the branches have been broken off,(LU) and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others(LV) and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.(LW) 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith.(LX) Do not be arrogant,(LY) but tremble.(LZ) 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

22 Consider therefore the kindness(MA) and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue(MB) in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.(MC) 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.(MD) 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree,(ME) how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

All Israel Will Be Saved

25 I do not want you to be ignorant(MF) of this mystery,(MG) brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:(MH) Israel has experienced a hardening(MI) in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in,(MJ) 26 and in this way[ax] all Israel will be saved.(MK) As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is[ay] my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”[az](ML)

28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies(MM) for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,(MN) 29 for God’s gifts and his call(MO) are irrevocable.(MP) 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient(MQ) to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[ba] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience(MR) so that he may have mercy on them all.

Doxology

33 Oh, the depth of the riches(MS) of the wisdom and[bb] knowledge of God!(MT)
    How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!(MU)
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”[bc](MV)
35 “Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”[bd](MW)
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.(MX)
To him be the glory forever! Amen.(MY)

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you,(MZ) brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,(NA) holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform(NB) to the pattern of this world,(NC) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.(ND) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is(NE)—his good, pleasing(NF) and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me(NG) I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,(NH) so in Christ we, though many, form one body,(NI) and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts,(NJ) according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,(NK) then prophesy in accordance with your[be] faith;(NL) if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;(NM) if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;(NN) if it is giving, then give generously;(NO) if it is to lead,[bf] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

Love must be sincere.(NP) Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.(NQ) 10 Be devoted to one another in love.(NR) Honor one another above yourselves.(NS) 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor,(NT) serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope,(NU) patient in affliction,(NV) faithful in prayer.(NW) 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.(NX) Practice hospitality.(NY)

14 Bless those who persecute you;(NZ) bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.(OA) 16 Live in harmony with one another.(OB) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[bg] Do not be conceited.(OC)

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil.(OD) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.(OE) 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.(OF) 19 Do not take revenge,(OG) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[bh](OH) says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[bi](OI)

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Submission to Governing Authorities

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,(OJ) for there is no authority except that which God has established.(OK) The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,(OL) and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.(OM) For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.(ON) Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.(OO)

This is also why you pay taxes,(OP) for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes;(OQ) if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Love Fulfills the Law

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.(OR) The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[bj](OS) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up(OT) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[bk](OU) 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.(OV)

The Day Is Near

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come(OW) for you to wake up from your slumber,(OX) because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.(OY) So let us put aside the deeds of darkness(OZ) and put on the armor(PA) of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness,(PB) not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.(PC) 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,(PD) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[bl](PE)

The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept the one whose faith is weak,(PF) without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.(PG) The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt(PH) the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge(PI) the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?(PJ) To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

One person considers one day more sacred than another;(PK) another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God;(PL) and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(PM) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(PN) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(PO) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(PP)

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[bm]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(PQ) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(PR) 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’(PS) says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[bn](PT)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.(PU)

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment(PV) on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(PW) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(PX) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(PY) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(PZ) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(QA) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(QB) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(QC) but of righteousness, peace(QD) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(QE)
