The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When the Lamb opened (A)the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels (B)who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel came and stood (C)at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with (D)the prayers of all the saints on (E)the golden altar before the throne, and (F)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. Then the angel took the censer and (G)filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and (H)there were peals of (I)thunder, rumblings,[a] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The Seven Trumpets

Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed (J)hail and (K)fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a (L)third of the earth was burned up, and a third of (M)the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like (N)a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea (O)became blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of (P)the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and (Q)a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on (R)the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood.[b] A third of the waters (S)became wormwood, and many people died from the water, (T)because it had been made bitter.

12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of (U)the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, (V)“Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and (W)I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given (X)the key to the shaft of (Y)the bottomless pit.[c] He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft (Z)rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and (AA)the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came (AB)locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. They were told (AC)not to harm (AD)the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have (AE)the seal of God on their foreheads. They were allowed to torment them (AF)for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. And in those days (AG)people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

(AH)In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: (AI)on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were (AJ)like human faces, their hair like women's hair, and (AK)their teeth like lions' teeth; they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was (AL)like the noise of many chariots with (AM)horses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people (AN)for five months is in their tails. 11 They have (AO)as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is (AP)Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.[d]

12 (AQ)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.

13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from (AR)the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release (AS)the four angels who are bound at (AT)the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released (AU)to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of (AV)mounted troops was (AW)twice ten thousand times ten thousand; (AX)I heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire[e] and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were (AY)like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (AZ)did not repent of (BA)the works of their hands nor give up worshiping (BB)demons (BC)and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their (BD)sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with (BE)a rainbow over his head, and (BF)his face was like the sun, and (BG)his legs like pillars of fire. (BH)He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, and called out with a loud voice, (BI)like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, (BJ)“Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (BK)raised his right hand to heaven and swore by (BL)him who lives forever and ever, (BM)who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, but that (BN)in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, (BO)just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, (BP)“Take and (BQ)eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. 11 And I was told, (BR)“You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given (BS)a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure (BT)the court outside the temple; leave that out, for (BU)it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for (BV)forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for (BW)1,260 days, (BX)clothed in sackcloth.”

These are (BY)the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone would harm them, (BZ)fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, (CA)this is how he is doomed to be killed. They have the power (CB)to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and (CC)to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. And when they have finished their testimony, (CD)the beast that rises from (CE)the bottomless pit[f] (CF)will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically[g] is called (CG)Sodom and (CH)Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and (CI)refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and (CJ)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and (CK)exchange presents, because these two prophets (CL)had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days (CM)a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, (CN)“Come up here!” And (CO)they went up to heaven (CP)in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at that hour there was (CQ)a great earthquake, and (CR)a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (CS)gave glory to (CT)the God of heaven.

14 (CU)The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then (CV)the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and (CW)there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (CX)“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (CY)his Christ, and (CZ)he shall reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders (DA)who sit on their thrones before God (DB)fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
    (DC)who is and who was,
for you have taken your great power
    and (DD)begun to reign.
18 The nations raged,
    but (DE)your wrath came,
and (DF)the time for the dead to be judged,
and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints,
and (DG)those who fear your name,
    both small and great,
and (DH)for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

19 Then (DI)God's temple in heaven was opened, and (DJ)the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,[h] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and (DK)heavy hail.

The Woman and the Dragon

12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman (DL)clothed with (DM)the sun, with (DN)the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and (DO)was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great (DP)red dragon, (DQ)with seven heads and (DR)ten horns, and on his heads (DS)seven diadems. His tail swept down (DT)a third of the stars of heaven and (DU)cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child (DV)he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, (DW)one who is to rule[i] all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was (DX)caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for (DY)1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

Now war arose in heaven, (DZ)Michael and (EA)his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And (EB)the great dragon was thrown down, (EC)that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, (ED)the deceiver of the whole world—(EE)he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now (EF)the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers[j] has been thrown down, (EG)who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And (EH)they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for (EI)they loved not their lives (EJ)even unto death. 12 Therefore, (EK)rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But (EL)woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because (EM)he knows that his time is short!”

13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued (EN)the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two (EO)wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent (EP)into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished (EQ)for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water (ER)like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off (ES)to make war on the rest of (ET)her offspring, (EU)on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to (EV)the testimony of Jesus. And he stood[k] on the sand of the sea.

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(A) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(B) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(C)

Another angel,(D) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(E) on the golden altar(F) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(G) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(H) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(I) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(J)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(K) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(L) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(M) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(N) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(O)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(P) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(Q) of the sea turned into blood,(R) a third(S) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(T) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(U) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(V) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(W)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(X) of them turned dark.(Y) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(Z)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(AA) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(AB) to the inhabitants of the earth,(AC) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(AD) The star was given the key(AE) to the shaft of the Abyss.(AF) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(AG) The sun and sky were darkened(AH) by the smoke from the Abyss.(AI) And out of the smoke locusts(AJ) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(AK) of the earth. They were told not to harm(AL) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(AM) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(AN) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(AO) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(AP) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(AQ)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(AR) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(AS) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(AT) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(AU) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(AV) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(AW) whose name in Hebrew(AX) is Abaddon(AY) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(AZ)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(BA) of the golden altar that is before God.(BB) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(BC) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(BD) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(BE) to kill a third(BF) of mankind.(BG) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(BH)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(BI) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(BJ) 18 A third(BK) of mankind was killed(BL) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(BM) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(BN) of the work of their hands;(BO) they did not stop worshiping demons,(BP) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(BQ) 21 Nor did they repent(BR) of their murders, their magic arts,(BS) their sexual immorality(BT) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(BU) coming down from heaven.(BV) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(BW) above his head; his face was like the sun,(BX) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(BY) He was holding a little scroll,(BZ) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(CA) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(CB) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(CC) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(CD) but I heard a voice from heaven(CE) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(CF)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(CG) raised his right hand to heaven.(CH) And he swore(CI) by him who lives for ever and ever,(CJ) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(CK) and said, “There will be no more delay!(CL) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(CM) the mystery(CN) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(CO)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(CP) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(CQ) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[b](CR) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(CS) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(CT) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(CU)

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(CV) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(CW) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(CX) They will trample on the holy city(CY) for 42 months.(CZ) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(DA) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(DB) clothed in sackcloth.”(DC) They are “the two olive trees”(DD) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[c](DE) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(DF) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(DG) They have power to shut up the heavens(DH) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(DI) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(DJ) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(DK) that comes up from the Abyss(DL) will attack them,(DM) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(DN)—which is figuratively called Sodom(DO) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(DP) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(DQ) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(DR) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(DS) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(DT) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(DU) the breath[d] of life from God entered them,(DV) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(DW) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(DX) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(DY) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(DZ) to the God of heaven.(EA)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(EB)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(EC) and there were loud voices(ED) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(EE)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(EF)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(EG) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(EH) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(EI) to you, Lord God Almighty,(EJ)
the One who is and who was,(EK)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(EL)
18 The nations were angry,(EM)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(EN)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(EO)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(EP)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(EQ) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(ER) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(ES) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(ET)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(EU) appeared in heaven:(EV) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(EW) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(EX) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(EY) an enormous red dragon(EZ) with seven heads(FA) and ten horns(FB) and seven crowns(FC) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(FD) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(FE) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(FF) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[e](FG) And her child was snatched up(FH) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(FI)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(FJ) and his angels fought against the dragon,(FK) and the dragon and his angels(FL) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(FM) called the devil,(FN) or Satan,(FO) who leads the whole world astray.(FP) He was hurled to the earth,(FQ) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(FR) say:

“Now have come the salvation(FS) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(FT)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(FU) him
by the blood of the Lamb(FV)
and by the word of their testimony;(FW)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(FX)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(FY)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(FZ) to the earth and the sea,(GA)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(GB) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(GC) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(GD) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(GE) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(GF) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(GG) against the rest of her offspring(GH)—those who keep God’s commands(GI) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(GJ)
