¹⁰ The inhabitants of the earth^(A) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,^(B) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

¹⁷ When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler^(A) of Israel?”

⁵ If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.^(A) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.^{(B) 6} They have power to shut up the heavens^(C) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;^(D) and they have power to turn the waters into blood^(E) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

The Stoning of Stephen

⁵⁴ When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious^(A) and gnashed their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,^(B) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.^{(C) 56} “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open^(D) and the Son of Man^(E) standing at the right hand of God.”

⁵⁷ At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,

³³ When they heard this, they were furious^(A) and wanted to put them to death.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me^(A) because I testify that its works are evil.^(B)

²² You will be hated by everyone because of me,^(A) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.^(B)
