Psalm 78
Dom och frälsning under Israels historia
1 En sång av Asaf.
Lyssna, mitt folk, till min undervisning,
vänd era öron till min muns ord.
2 Jag vill öppna min mun till lärorikt tal,
uppenbara hemligheter från gången tid.
3 Vad vi har hört och känner till,
vad våra fäder har berättat för oss,
4 det vill vi inte dölja för deras barn.
För ett kommande släkte vill vi förkunna Herrens lov,
hans makt och de under han har gjort.
5 Han upprättade ett vittnesbörd i Jakob,
sin undervisning gav han i Israel.
Han fastställde den för våra fäder,
och de skulle kungöra den för sina barn.
6 Så skulle det bli känt för ett kommande släkte,
för barn som en gång skulle födas,
och de skulle berätta det för sina barn.
7 De skulle då hoppas på Gud
och inte glömma hans verk
utan följa hans bud.
8 De skulle inte bli som sina fäder,
ett motsträvigt och upproriskt släkte,
vars hjärta var opålitligt
och vars ande var trolös mot Gud.
9 Efraims söner, välbeväpnade bågskyttar,
vände om på stridens dag.
10 De höll inte Guds förbund
och ville inte följa hans lag.
11 De glömde hans gärningar,
de under han låtit dem se.
12 Inför deras fäder hade han gjort under,
i Egyptens land, på Soans mark.
13 Han delade havet och lät dem gå igenom det,
han lät vattnet stå som en mur.
14 Han ledde dem om dagen med molnskyn
och hela natten med eldens sken.
15 Han klöv klippor i öknen
och gav dem rikligt med vatten att dricka,
som ur väldiga hav.
16 Rinnande bäckar lät han bryta fram ur klippan,
vatten lät han flyta ner som strömmar.
17 Men de fortsatte att synda mot honom
de var upproriska mot den Högste i öknen.
18 De frestade Gud i sina hjärtan
när de begärde mat för sin lystnad.
19 De talade mot Gud och sade:
"Kan väl Gud duka ett bord i öknen?
20 Se, han slog på klippan,
så att vatten flödade och bäckar strömmade fram,
men kan han också ge bröd
eller skaffa kött åt sitt folk?"
21 När Herren hörde det blev han vred,
eld upptändes i Jakob,
vrede kom över Israel,
22 eftersom de inte trodde på Gud
och inte förtröstade på hans frälsning.
23 Han gav befallning åt skyarna i höjden
och öppnade himlens dörrar.
24 Han lät manna regna över dem till föda,
säd från himlen gav han dem.
25 Änglabröd fick människor äta,
han gav dem all den mat de behövde.
26 Han lät östanvinden fara ut från himlen,
genom sin makt bjöd han sunnanvinden komma.
27 Han lät kött regna över dem som stoft,
bevingade fåglar som havets sand.
28 Han lät det falla ner i sitt läger,
runt omkring sin boning.
29 Då åt de och blev övermätta,
han lät dem få vad de begärde.
30 Men innan de hade stillat sitt begär,
medan maten ännu var i deras mun,
31 kom Guds vrede över dem.
Han sände död bland de tappraste,
Israels utvalda män slog han ner.
32 Ändå fortsatte de att synda,
de trodde inte på hans under.
33 Då lät han deras dagar försvinna i tomhet
och deras år i plötslig undergång.
34 När han dräpte,
frågade de efter honom.
De vände om och sökte Gud.
35 De tänkte på att Gud var deras klippa,
att Gud, den Högste, var deras återlösare.
36 De försökte bedra honom med sina ord,
de ljög för honom med sin tunga.
37 Deras hjärtan var inte uppriktiga mot honom,
de var ej trogna mot hans förbund.
38 Men han är barmhärtig
och förlåter missgärning,
han vill inte förgöra.
Många gånger höll han tillbaka sin vrede
och lät inte hela sin vredesglöd bryta fram.
39 Han tänkte på att de var kött,
en vindpust som far bort och ej kommer åter.
40 Hur ofta var de inte upproriska mot honom i öknen
och bedrövade honom i ödemarken!
41 De frestade Gud gång på gång
och kränkte Israels Helige.
42 De kom inte ihåg vad hans hand hade uträttat,
på den tid då han befriade dem från fienden,
43 då han gjorde sina tecken i Egypten
och sina under på Soans mark.
44 Där förvandlade han deras strömmar till blod,
så att de inte kunde dricka ur bäckarna.
45 Han sände flugsvärmar som åt dem
och paddor som förstörde.
46 Han gav deras gröda åt larver
och deras arbetes frukt åt gräshoppor.
47 Han slog deras vinstockar med hagel
och deras fikonträd med hagelstenar.
48 Han utlämnade deras nötboskap åt hagel
och deras fårhjordar åt blixten.
49 Han sände över dem sin vredesglöd,
harm, vrede och nöd,
en skara av olycksänglar.
50 Han gav fritt utlopp åt sin vrede,
han skonade inte deras själ från döden
utan prisgav deras liv åt pesten.
51 Han slog allt förstfött i Egypten,
kraftens förstling i Hams hyddor.
52 Han lät sitt folk bryta upp som en fårhjord
och förde dem som en boskapshjord genom öknen.
53 Han ledde dem tryggt, så att de inte behövde frukta,
och havet övertäckte deras fiender.
54 Han lät dem komma till sitt heliga land,
till det berg som hans högra hand hade erövrat.
55 Han jagade bort hednafolken för dem
och gav dem deras land som arvedel.
Han lät Israels stammar bo i deras hyddor.
56 Men de var upproriska och frestade Gud, den Högste,
de tog inte vara på hans vittnesbörd.
57 De vek trolöst tillbaka, de liksom deras fäder,
de vände om likt en båge som sviktar.
58 De väckte hans vrede med sina offerhöjder
och kränkte honom genom sina avgudabilder.
59 Gud hörde det och blev vred,
han förkastade Israel med all kraft.
60 Han övergav sin boning i Silo,
det tält han slagit upp bland människorna.
61 Han gav sin makt i fångenskap
och sin ära i fiendehand.
62 Sitt folk utlämnade han åt svärdet,
han blev vred på sin arvedel.
63 Deras unga män förtärdes av eld,
deras unga kvinnor blev utan brudsång.
64 Deras präster föll för svärd,
deras änkor kunde inte hålla dödsklagan.
65 Då vaknade Herren som ur en sömn,
lik en hjälte som legat bedövad av vin.
66 Han slog tillbaka sina fiender,
evig skam lät han komma över dem.
67 Han förkastade Josefs hyddor
och utvalde inte Efraims stam.
68 Men han utvalde Juda stam,
Sions berg, som han älskade.
69 Han byggde sin helgedom hög som himlen,
som jorden grundlade han den för evigt.
70 Han utvalde sin tjänare David
och tog honom från fårhjordens fållor.
71 Från fåren hämtade han honom
och satte honom till herde för Jakob, sitt folk,
för Israel, sin arvedel.
72 Han var deras herde med uppriktigt hjärta
och ledde dem med förståndig hand.

78 Give ear, O my people, to my law;
Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a (B)parable;
I will utter [b]dark sayings of old,
3 Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.
4 (C)We will not hide them from their children,
(D)Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.
5 For (E)He established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers,
That (F)they should make them known to their children;
6 (G)That the generation to come might know them,
The children who would be born,
That they may arise and declare them to their children,
7 That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;
8 And (H)may not be like their fathers,
(I)A stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation (J)that did not [c]set its heart aright,
And whose spirit was not faithful to God.
9 The children of Ephraim, being armed and [d]carrying bows,
Turned back in the day of battle.
10 (K)They did not keep the covenant of God;
They refused to walk in His law,
11 And (L)forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.
12 (M)Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, (N)in the field of Zoan.
13 (O)He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;
And (P)He made the waters stand up like a heap.
14 (Q)In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.
15 (R)He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.
16 He also brought (S)streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 But they sinned even more against Him
By (T)rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.
18 And (U)they tested God in their heart
By asking for the food of their fancy.
19 (V)Yes, they spoke against God:
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 (W)Behold, He struck the rock,
So that the waters gushed out,
And the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also?
Can He provide meat for His people?”
21 Therefore the Lord heard this and (X)was furious;
So a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also came up against Israel,
22 Because they (Y)did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
(Z)And opened the doors of heaven,
24 (AA)Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the [e]bread of (AB)heaven.
25 Men ate angels’ food;
He sent them food to [f]the full.
26 (AC)He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens;
And by His power He brought in the south wind.
27 He also rained meat on them like the dust,
Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;
28 And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
All around their dwellings.
29 (AD)So they ate and were well filled,
For He gave them their own desire.
30 They were not [g]deprived of their craving;
But (AE)while their food was still in their mouths,
31 The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.
32 In spite of this (AF)they still sinned,
And (AG)did not believe in His wondrous works.
33 (AH)Therefore their days He consumed in futility,
And their years in fear.
34 (AI)When He slew them, then they sought Him;
And they returned and sought earnestly for God.
35 Then they remembered that (AJ)God was their rock,
And the Most High God (AK)their Redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they (AL)flattered Him with their mouth,
And they lied to Him with their tongue;
37 For their heart was not steadfast with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
38 (AM)But He, being full of (AN)compassion, forgave their iniquity,
And did not destroy them.
Yes, many a time (AO)He turned His anger away,
And (AP)did not stir up all His wrath;
39 For (AQ)He remembered (AR)that they were but flesh,
(AS)A breath that passes away and does not come again.
40 How often they (AT)provoked[h] Him in the wilderness,
And grieved Him in the desert!
41 Yes, (AU)again and again they tempted God,
And limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember His [i]power:
The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,
43 When He worked His signs in Egypt,
And His wonders in the field of Zoan;
44 (AV)Turned their rivers into blood,
And their streams, that they could not drink.
45 (AW)He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them,
And (AX)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He also gave their crops to the caterpillar,
And their labor to the (AY)locust.
47 (AZ)He destroyed their vines with hail,
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He also gave up their (BA)cattle to the hail,
And their flocks to fiery [j]lightning.
49 He cast on them the fierceness of His anger,
Wrath, indignation, and trouble,
By sending angels of destruction among them.
50 He made a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave [k]their life over to the plague,
51 And destroyed all the (BB)firstborn in Egypt,
The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 But He (BC)made His own people go forth like sheep,
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
53 And He (BD)led them on safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea (BE)overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And He brought them to His (BF)holy border,
This mountain (BG)which His right hand had acquired.
55 (BH)He also drove out the nations before them,
(BI)Allotted them an inheritance by [l]survey,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 (BJ)Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But (BK)turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside (BL)like a deceitful bow.
58 (BM)For they provoked Him to anger with their (BN)high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
59 When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
60 (BO)So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,
61 (BP)And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 (BQ)He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men,
And (BR)their maidens were not given in marriage.
64 (BS)Their priests fell by the sword,
And (BT)their widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
(BU)Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.
66 And (BV)He beat back His enemies;
He put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion (BW)which He loved.
69 And He built His (BX)sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has established forever.
70 (BY)He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From following (BZ)the ewes that had young He brought him,
(CA)To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (CB)integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

Tell the Coming Generation
A Maskil[a] of (A)Asaph.
78 (B)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 (C)I will open my mouth (D)in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known,
that our (E)fathers have told us.
4 We will not (F)hide them from their children,
but (G)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
and (H)the wonders that he has done.
5 He established (I)a testimony in (J)Jacob
and appointed a law in (K)Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
to teach to their children,
6 that (L)the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
7 so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget (M)the works of God,
but (N)keep his commandments;
8 and that they should not be (O)like their fathers,
(P)a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation (Q)whose heart was not steadfast,

33 So he made (AZ)their days (BA)vanish like[c] a breath,[d]
and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they (BB)sought him;
they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their (BC)rock,
the Most High God their (BD)redeemer.
36 But they (BE)flattered him with their mouths;
they (BF)lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their (BG)heart was not (BH)steadfast toward him;
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being (BI)compassionate,
(BJ)atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He (BK)remembered that they were but (BL)flesh,
(BM)a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they (BN)rebelled against him in the wilderness
and (BO)grieved him in (BP)the desert!
41 They (BQ)tested God again and again
and provoked (BR)the Holy One of Israel.
42 They (BS)did not remember his power[e]
or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 (BT)when he performed his (BU)signs in Egypt
and his (BV)marvels in (BW)the fields of Zoan.
44 He (BX)turned their rivers to blood,
so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of (BY)flies, which devoured them,
and (BZ)frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to (CA)the destroying locust
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with (CB)hail
and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their (CC)cattle to the hail
and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger,
wrath, indignation, and distress,
a company of (CD)destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death,
but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every (CE)firstborn in Egypt,
the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of (CF)Ham.
52 Then he led out his people (CG)like sheep
and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 (CH)He led them in safety, so that they (CI)were not afraid,
but (CJ)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to his (CK)holy land,
(CL)to the mountain which his right hand had (CM)won.
55 He (CN)drove out nations before them;
he (CO)apportioned them for a possession
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
56 Yet they (CP)tested and (CQ)rebelled against the Most High God
and did not keep his testimonies,
57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
they twisted like (CR)a deceitful bow.
58 For they (CS)provoked him to anger with their (CT)high places;
they (CU)moved him to jealousy with their (CV)idols.
59 When God heard, he was full of (CW)wrath,
and he utterly rejected Israel.
60 He (CX)forsook his dwelling at (CY)Shiloh,
the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
61 and delivered his (CZ)power to captivity,
his (DA)glory to the hand of the foe.
62 He (DB)gave his people over to the sword
and (DC)vented his wrath on his heritage.
63 (DD)Fire devoured their young men,
and their young women had no (DE)marriage song.
64 Their (DF)priests fell by the sword,
and their (DG)widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord (DH)awoke as from sleep,
like a strong man shouting because of wine.
66 And he (DI)put his adversaries to rout;
he put them to everlasting shame.
67 He rejected the tent of (DJ)Joseph;
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he (DK)loves.
69 He (DL)built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
like the earth, which he has founded forever.
70 He (DM)chose David his servant

71 from (DN)following the nursing ewes he brought him
to (DO)shepherd Jacob his people,

72 With (DQ)upright heart he shepherded them
and (DR)guided them with his skillful hand.

78 Pueblo mío, atiende a mi enseñanza;
presta oído a las palabras de mi boca.
2 Mis labios pronunciarán parábolas
y evocarán misterios de antaño,
3 cosas que hemos oído y conocido,
y que nuestros padres nos han contado.
4 No las esconderemos de sus descendientes;
hablaremos a la generación venidera
del poder del Señor, de sus proezas,
y de las maravillas que ha realizado.
5 Él promulgó un decreto para Jacob,
dictó una ley para Israel;
ordenó a nuestros antepasados
enseñarlos a sus descendientes,
6 para que los conocieran las generaciones venideras
y los hijos que habrían de nacer,
que a su vez los enseñarían a sus hijos.
7 Así ellos pondrían su confianza en Dios
y no se olvidarían de sus proezas,
sino que cumplirían sus mandamientos.
8 Así no serían como sus antepasados:
generación obstinada y rebelde,
gente de corazón fluctuante,
cuyo espíritu no se mantuvo fiel a Dios.
9 La tribu de Efraín, con sus diestros arqueros,
se puso en fuga el día de la batalla.
10 No cumplieron con el pacto de Dios,
sino que se negaron a seguir sus enseñanzas.
11 Echaron al olvido sus proezas,
las maravillas que les había mostrado,
12 los milagros que hizo a la vista de sus padres
en la tierra de Egipto, en la región de Zoán.
13 Partió el mar en dos para que ellos lo cruzaran,
mientras mantenía las aguas firmes como un muro.
14 De día los guio con una nube,
y toda la noche con luz de fuego.
15 En el desierto partió en dos las rocas,
y les dio a beber torrentes de aguas;
16 hizo que brotaran arroyos de la peña
y que las aguas fluyeran como ríos.
17 Pero ellos volvieron a pecar contra él;
en el desierto se rebelaron contra el Altísimo.
18 Con toda intención pusieron a Dios a prueba,
y le exigieron comida a su antojo.
19 Murmuraron contra Dios, y aun dijeron:
«¿Podrá Dios prepararnos una mesa en el desierto?
20 Cuando golpeó la roca,
el agua brotó en torrentes;
pero ¿podrá también darnos de comer?,
¿podrá proveerle carne a su pueblo?»
21 Cuando el Señor oyó esto, se puso muy furioso;
su enojo se encendió contra Jacob,
su ira ardió contra Israel.
22 Porque no confiaron en Dios,
ni creyeron que él los salvaría.
23 Desde lo alto dio una orden a las nubes,
y se abrieron las puertas de los cielos.
24 Hizo que les lloviera maná, para que comieran;
pan del cielo les dio a comer.
25 Todos ellos comieron pan de ángeles;
Dios les envió comida hasta saciarlos.
26 Desató desde el cielo el viento solano,
y con su poder levantó el viento del sur.
27 Cual lluvia de polvo, hizo que les lloviera carne;
¡nubes de pájaros, como la arena del mar!
28 Los hizo caer en medio de su campamento
y en los alrededores de sus tiendas.
29 Comieron y se hartaron,
pues Dios les cumplió su capricho.
30 Pero el capricho no les duró mucho:
aún tenían la comida en la boca
31 cuando el enojo de Dios vino sobre ellos:
dio muerte a sus hombres más robustos;
abatió a la flor y nata de Israel.
32 A pesar de todo, siguieron pecando
y no creyeron en sus maravillas.
33 Por tanto, Dios hizo que sus días
se esfumaran como un suspiro,
que sus años acabaran en medio del terror.
34 Si Dios los castigaba, entonces lo buscaban,
y con ansias se volvían de nuevo a él.
35 Se acordaban de que Dios era su roca,
de que el Dios Altísimo era su redentor.
36 Pero entonces lo halagaban con la boca,
y le mentían con la lengua.
37 No fue su corazón sincero para con Dios;
no fueron fieles a su pacto.
38 Sin embargo, él tuvo compasión de ellos;
les perdonó su maldad y no los destruyó.
Una y otra vez contuvo su enojo,
y no se dejó llevar del todo por la ira.
39 Se acordó de que eran simples mortales,
un efímero suspiro que jamás regresa.
40 ¡Cuántas veces se rebelaron contra él en el desierto,
y lo entristecieron en los páramos!
41 Una y otra vez ponían a Dios a prueba;
provocaban al Santo de Israel.
42 Jamás se acordaron de su poder,
de cuando los rescató del opresor,
43 ni de sus señales milagrosas en Egipto,
ni de sus portentos en la región de Zoán,
44 cuando convirtió en sangre los ríos egipcios
y no pudieron ellos beber de sus arroyos;
45 cuando les envió tábanos que los devoraban,
y ranas que los destruían;
46 cuando entregó sus cosechas a los saltamontes,
y sus sembrados a la langosta;
47 cuando con granizo destruyó sus viñas,
y con escarcha sus higueras;
48 cuando entregó su ganado al granizo,
y sus rebaños a las centellas;
49 cuando lanzó contra ellos el ardor de su ira,
de su furor, indignación y hostilidad:
¡todo un ejército de ángeles destructores!
50 Dio rienda suelta a su enojo
y no los libró de la muerte,
sino que los entregó a la plaga.
51 Dio muerte a todos los primogénitos de Egipto,
a las primicias de su raza en los campamentos de Cam.
52 A su pueblo lo guio como a un rebaño;
los llevó por el desierto, como a ovejas,

58 Lo irritaron con sus santuarios paganos;
con sus ídolos despertaron sus celos.
59 Dios lo supo y se puso muy furioso,
por lo que rechazó completamente a Israel.
60 Abandonó el tabernáculo de Siló,
que era su santuario aquí en la tierra,
61 y dejó que el símbolo de su poder y gloria
cayera cautivo en manos enemigas.
62 Tan furioso estaba contra su pueblo

1 My people, hear my teaching;(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(H) for Jacob(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(L)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(M)—
a stubborn(N) and rebellious(O) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(P)
turned back on the day of battle;(Q)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(R)
and refused to live by his law.(S)
11 They forgot what he had done,(T)
the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(U) in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt,(V) in the region of Zoan.(W)
13 He divided the sea(X) and led them through;
he made the water stand up like a wall.(Y)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
and with light from the fire all night.(Z)
15 He split the rocks(AA) in the wilderness
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
and made water flow down like rivers.
17 But they continued to sin(AB) against him,
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(AC)
by demanding the food they craved.(AD)
19 They spoke against God;(AE)
they said, “Can God really
spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
and water gushed out,(AF)
streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(AG) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(AH) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(AI) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(AJ)
24 he rained down manna(AK) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(AL) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(AM) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(AN)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(AO)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(AP) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(AQ)
in spite of his wonders,(AR) they did not believe.(AS)
33 So he ended their days in futility(AT)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(AU) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(AV)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(AW)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(AX)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(AY) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AZ)
he forgave(BA) their iniquities(BB)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(BC)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(BD)
a passing breeze(BE) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(BF) against him in the wilderness(BG)
and grieved him(BH) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(BI)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(BJ)
42 They did not remember(BK) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(BL)
43 the day he displayed his signs(BM) in Egypt,
his wonders(BN) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(BO)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(BP) that devoured them,
and frogs(BQ) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(BR)
their produce to the locust.(BS)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(BT)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(BU) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(BV)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(BW)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(BX)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(BY)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BZ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(CA) their enemies.(CB)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(CC) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(CD) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(CE)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(CF) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(CG)
58 They angered him(CH) with their high places;(CI)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(CJ)
59 When God heard(CK) them, he was furious;(CL)
he rejected Israel(CM) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(CN)
the tent he had set up among humans.(CO)
61 He sent the ark of his might(CP) into captivity,(CQ)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(CR)
he was furious with his inheritance.(CS)
63 Fire consumed(CT) their young men,
and their young women had no wedding songs;(CU)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(CV)
and their widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(CW)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(CX)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(CY)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(CZ)
Mount Zion,(DA) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(DB) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(DC) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(DD) he brought him
to be the shepherd(DE) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(DF)
with skillful hands he led them.
