Psalm 66-78

New International Version

⁵ Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds^(H) for mankind!
⁶ He turned the sea into dry land,^(I)
    they passed through^(J) the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice^(K) in him.
⁷ He rules forever^(L) by his power,
    his eyes watch^(M) the nations—
    let not the rebellious^(N) rise up against him.

⁸ Praise^(O) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
⁹ he has preserved our lives^(P)
    and kept our feet from slipping.^(Q)
10 For you, God, tested^(R) us;
    you refined us like silver.^(S)
11 You brought us into prison^(T)
    and laid burdens^(U) on our backs.
¹² You let people ride over our heads;^(V)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.^(W)

¹³ I will come to your temple with burnt offerings^(X)
    and fulfill my vows^(Y) to you—
¹⁴ vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
¹⁵ I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.^(Z)

¹⁶ Come and hear,^(AA) all you who fear God;
    let me tell^(AB) you what he has done for me.
¹⁷ I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
¹⁸ If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;^(AC)
19 but God has surely listened
    and has heard^(AD) my prayer.
²⁰ Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected^(AE) my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

³ May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.^(AI)
4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,^(AJ)
    for you rule the peoples with equity^(AK)
    and guide the nations of the earth.^(AL)
5 May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.

⁶ The land yields its harvest;^(AM)
    God, our God, blesses us.^(AN)
7 May God bless us still,
    so that all the ends of the earth^(AO) will fear him.^(AP)

⁴ Sing to God, sing in praise of his name,^(AX)
    extol him who rides on the clouds^[e](AY);
    rejoice before him—his name is the Lord.^(AZ)
5 A father to the fatherless,^(BA) a defender of widows,^(BB)
    is God in his holy dwelling.^(BC)
6 God sets the lonely^(BD) in families,^[f](BE)
    he leads out the prisoners^(BF) with singing;
    but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.^(BG)

⁷ When you, God, went out^(BH) before your people,
    when you marched through the wilderness,^[g](BI)
8 the earth shook,^(BJ) the heavens poured down rain,^(BK)
    before God, the One of Sinai,^(BL)
    before God, the God of Israel.^(BM)
9 You gave abundant showers,^(BN) O God;
    you refreshed your weary inheritance.
¹⁰ Your people settled in it,
    and from your bounty,^(BO) God, you provided^(BP) for the poor.

¹¹ The Lord announces the word,
    and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:^(BQ)
12 “Kings and armies flee^(BR) in haste;
    the women at home divide the plunder.^(BS)
13 Even while you sleep among the sheep pens,^[h](BT)
    the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,
    its feathers with shining gold.”
¹⁴ When the Almighty^[i] scattered^(BU) the kings in the land,
    it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon.^(BV)

¹⁵ Mount Bashan,^(BW) majestic mountain,^(BX)
    Mount Bashan, rugged mountain,
¹⁶ why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain,
    at the mountain where God chooses^(BY) to reign,
    where the Lord himself will dwell forever?^(BZ)
17 The chariots^(CA) of God are tens of thousands
    and thousands of thousands;^(CB)
    the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.^[j]
18 When you ascended^(CC) on high,^(CD)
    you took many captives;^(CE)
    you received gifts from people,^(CF)
even from^[k] the rebellious^(CG)—
    that you,^[l] Lord God, might dwell there.

¹⁹ Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,^(CH)
    who daily bears our burdens.^(CI)
20 Our God is a God who saves;^(CJ)
    from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.^(CK)
21 Surely God will crush the heads^(CL) of his enemies,
    the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
²² The Lord says, “I will bring them from Bashan;
    I will bring them from the depths of the sea,^(CM)
23 that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes,^(CN)
    while the tongues of your dogs^(CO) have their share.”

²⁴ Your procession, God, has come into view,
    the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.^(CP)
25 In front are the singers,^(CQ) after them the musicians;^(CR)
    with them are the young women playing the timbrels.^(CS)
26 Praise God in the great congregation;^(CT)
    praise the Lord in the assembly of Israel.^(CU)
27 There is the little tribe^(CV) of Benjamin,^(CW) leading them,
    there the great throng of Judah’s princes,
    and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.^(CX)

²⁸ Summon your power,^(CY) God^[m];
    show us your strength,^(CZ) our God, as you have done^(DA) before.
²⁹ Because of your temple at Jerusalem
    kings will bring you gifts.^(DB)
30 Rebuke the beast^(DC) among the reeds,^(DD)
    the herd of bulls^(DE) among the calves of the nations.
Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver.
    Scatter the nations^(DF) who delight in war.^(DG)
31 Envoys will come from Egypt;^(DH)
    Cush^[n](DI) will submit herself to God.

³² Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth,^(DJ)
    sing praise^(DK) to the Lord,
³³ to him who rides^(DL) across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens,
    who thunders^(DM) with mighty voice.^(DN)
34 Proclaim the power^(DO) of God,
    whose majesty^(DP) is over Israel,
    whose power is in the heavens.
³⁵ You, God, are awesome^(DQ) in your sanctuary;^(DR)
    the God of Israel gives power and strength^(DS) to his people.^(DT)

Praise be to God!^(DU)

⁵ You, God, know my folly;^(EE)
    my guilt is not hidden from you.^(EF)

⁶ Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
⁷ For I endure scorn^(EG) for your sake,^(EH)
    and shame covers my face.^(EI)
8 I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;^(EJ)
9 for zeal for your house consumes me,^(EK)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.^(EL)
10 When I weep and fast,^(EM)
    I must endure scorn;
¹¹ when I put on sackcloth,^(EN)
    people make sport of me.
¹² Those who sit at the gate^(EO) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.^(EP)

¹³ But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;^(EQ)
in your great love,^(ER) O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
¹⁴ Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.^(ES)
15 Do not let the floodwaters^(ET) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up^(EU)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.^(EV)

¹⁶ Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;^(EW)
    in your great mercy turn to me.
¹⁷ Do not hide your face^(EX) from your servant;
    answer me quickly,^(EY) for I am in trouble.^(EZ)
18 Come near and rescue me;
    deliver^(FA) me because of my foes.

¹⁹ You know how I am scorned,^(FB) disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
²⁰ Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters,^(FC) but I found none.^(FD)
21 They put gall in my food
    and gave me vinegar^(FE) for my thirst.^(FF)

²² May the table set before them become a snare;
    may it become retribution and^[p] a trap.^(FG)
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
    and their backs be bent forever.^(FH)
24 Pour out your wrath^(FI) on them;
    let your fierce anger overtake them.
²⁵ May their place be deserted;^(FJ)
    let there be no one to dwell in their tents.^(FK)
26 For they persecute those you wound
    and talk about the pain of those you hurt.^(FL)
27 Charge them with crime upon crime;^(FM)
    do not let them share in your salvation.^(FN)
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life^(FO)
    and not be listed with the righteous.^(FP)

²⁹ But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
    may your salvation, God, protect me.^(FQ)

³⁰ I will praise God’s name in song^(FR)
    and glorify him^(FS) with thanksgiving.
³¹ This will please the Lord more than an ox,
    more than a bull with its horns and hooves.^(FT)
32 The poor will see and be glad^(FU)—
    you who seek God, may your hearts live!^(FV)
33 The Lord hears the needy^(FW)
    and does not despise his captive people.

³⁴ Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and all that move in them,^(FX)
35 for God will save Zion^(FY)
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.^(FZ)
Then people will settle there and possess it;
³⁶     the children of his servants will inherit it,^(GA)
    and those who love his name will dwell there.^(GB)

² May those who want to take my life^(GE)
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.^(GF)
3 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”^(GG)
    turn back because of their shame.
⁴ But may all who seek you^(GH)
    rejoice and be glad^(GI) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”^(GJ)

⁵ But as for me, I am poor and needy;^(GK)
    come quickly to me,^(GL) O God.
You are my help^(GM) and my deliverer;^(GN)
    Lord, do not delay.^(GO)

⁵ For you have been my hope,^(GX) Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence^(GY) since my youth.
⁶ From birth^(GZ) I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.^(HA)
    I will ever praise^(HB) you.
⁷ I have become a sign^(HC) to many;
    you are my strong refuge.^(HD)
8 My mouth^(HE) is filled with your praise,
    declaring your splendor^(HF) all day long.

⁹ Do not cast^(HG) me away when I am old;^(HH)
    do not forsake^(HI) me when my strength is gone.
¹⁰ For my enemies^(HJ) speak against me;
    those who wait to kill^(HK) me conspire^(HL) together.
¹¹ They say, “God has forsaken^(HM) him;
    pursue him and seize him,
    for no one will rescue^(HN) him.”
¹² Do not be far^(HO) from me, my God;
    come quickly, God, to help^(HP) me.
¹³ May my accusers^(HQ) perish in shame;^(HR)
    may those who want to harm me
    be covered with scorn and disgrace.^(HS)

¹⁴ As for me, I will always have hope;^(HT)
    I will praise you more and more.

¹⁵ My mouth will tell^(HU) of your righteous deeds,^(HV)
    of your saving acts all day long—
    though I know not how to relate them all.
¹⁶ I will come and proclaim your mighty acts,^(HW) Sovereign Lord;
    I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
¹⁷ Since my youth, God, you have taught^(HX) me,
    and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.^(HY)
18 Even when I am old and gray,^(HZ)
    do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power^(IA) to the next generation,
    your mighty acts to all who are to come.^(IB)

¹⁹ Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,^(IC)
    you who have done great things.^(ID)
    Who is like you, God?^(IE)
20 Though you have made me see troubles,^(IF)
    many and bitter,
    you will restore^(IG) my life again;
from the depths of the earth^(IH)
    you will again bring me up.
²¹ You will increase my honor^(II)
    and comfort^(IJ) me once more.

²² I will praise you with the harp^(IK)
    for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,^(IL)
    Holy One of Israel.^(IM)
23 My lips will shout for joy^(IN)
    when I sing praise to you—
    I whom you have delivered.^(IO)
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
    all day long,^(IP)
for those who wanted to harm me^(IQ)
    have been put to shame and confusion.^(IR)

³ May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
⁴ May he defend the afflicted^(IU) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;^(IV)
    may he crush the oppressor.^(IW)
5 May he endure^[r](IX) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.^(IY)
6 May he be like rain^(IZ) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
⁷ In his days may the righteous flourish^(JA)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

⁸ May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River^[s](JB) to the ends of the earth.^(JC)
9 May the desert tribes bow before him
    and his enemies lick the dust.
¹⁰ May the kings of Tarshish^(JD) and of distant shores^(JE)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba^(JF) and Seba
    present him gifts.^(JG)
11 May all kings bow down^(JH) to him
    and all nations serve^(JI) him.

¹² For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
¹³ He will take pity^(JJ) on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
¹⁴ He will rescue^(JK) them from oppression and violence,
    for precious^(JL) is their blood in his sight.

¹⁵ Long may he live!
    May gold from Sheba^(JM) be given him.
May people ever pray for him
    and bless him all day long.^(JN)
16 May grain^(JO) abound throughout the land;
    on the tops of the hills may it sway.
May the crops^(JP) flourish like Lebanon^(JQ)
    and thrive^[t] like the grass of the field.^(JR)
17 May his name endure forever;^(JS)
    may it continue as long as the sun.^(JT)

Then all nations will be blessed through him,^[u]
    and they will call him blessed.^(JU)

¹⁸ Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,^(JV)
    who alone does marvelous deeds.^(JW)
19 Praise be to his glorious name^(JX) forever;
    may the whole earth be filled with his glory.^(JY)

²⁰ This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.^(KA)

² But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;^(KC)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.^(KD)
3 For I envied^(KE) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.^(KF)

⁴ They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.^[v]
5 They are free^(KG) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
⁶ Therefore pride^(KH) is their necklace;^(KI)
    they clothe themselves with violence.^(KJ)
7 From their callous hearts^(KK) comes iniquity^[w];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
⁸ They scoff, and speak with malice;^(KL)
    with arrogance^(KM) they threaten oppression.^(KN)
9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
¹⁰ Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.^[x]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

¹² This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,^(KO) they go on amassing wealth.^(KP)

¹³ Surely in vain^(KQ) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.^(KR)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,^(KS)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

¹⁵ If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
¹⁶ When I tried to understand^(KT) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
¹⁷ till I entered the sanctuary^(KU) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.^(KV)

¹⁸ Surely you place them on slippery ground;^(KW)
    you cast them down to ruin.^(KX)
19 How suddenly^(KY) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away^(KZ) by terrors!
²⁰ They are like a dream^(LA) when one awakes;^(LB)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.^(LC)

²¹ When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
²² I was senseless^(LD) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast^(LE) before you.

²³ Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.^(LF)
24 You guide^(LG) me with your counsel,^(LH)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but you?^(LI)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.^(LJ)
26 My flesh and my heart^(LK) may fail,^(LL)
    but God is the strength^(LM) of my heart
    and my portion^(LN) forever.

²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish;^(LO)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful^(LP) to you.
²⁸ But as for me, it is good to be near God.^(LQ)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;^(LR)
    I will tell of all your deeds.^(LS)

⁴ Your foes roared^(MD) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards^(ME) as signs.
⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.^(MF)
6 They smashed all the carved^(MG) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
⁷ They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled^(MH) the dwelling place^(MI) of your Name.^(MJ)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush^(MK) them completely!”
    They burned^(ML) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

⁹ We are given no signs from God;^(MM)
    no prophets^(MN) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
¹⁰ How long^(MO) will the enemy mock^(MP) you, God?
    Will the foe revile^(MQ) your name forever?
¹¹ Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?^(MR)
    Take it from the folds of your garment^(MS) and destroy them!

¹² But God is my King^(MT) from long ago;
    he brings salvation^(MU) on the earth.

¹³ It was you who split open the sea^(MV) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster^(MW) in the waters.
¹⁴ It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan^(MX)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.^(MY)
15 It was you who opened up springs^(MZ) and streams;
    you dried up^(NA) the ever-flowing rivers.
¹⁶ The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.^(NB)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries^(NC) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.^(ND)

¹⁸ Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people^(NE) have reviled your name.
¹⁹ Do not hand over the life of your dove^(NF) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted^(NG) people forever.
²⁰ Have regard for your covenant,^(NH)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places^(NI) of the land.
²¹ Do not let the oppressed^(NJ) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy^(NK) praise your name.
²² Rise up,^(NL) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools^(NM) mock you all day long.
²³ Do not ignore the clamor^(NN) of your adversaries,^(NO)
    the uproar^(NP) of your enemies,^(NQ) which rises continually.

² You say, “I choose the appointed time;^(NT)
    it is I who judge with equity.^(NU)
3 When the earth and all its people quake,^(NV)
    it is I who hold its pillars^(NW) firm.^[aa]
4 To the arrogant^(NX) I say, ‘Boast no more,’^(NY)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.^[ab](NZ)
5 Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.^(OA)’”

⁶ No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
⁷ It is God who judges:^(OB)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.^(OC)
8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed^(OD) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.^(OE)

⁹ As for me, I will declare^(OF) this forever;
    I will sing^(OG) praise to the God of Jacob,^(OH)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”^(OI)

⁴ You are radiant with light,^(OO)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
⁵ The valiant^(OP) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;^(OQ)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
⁶ At your rebuke,^(OR) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot^(OS) lie still.

⁷ It is you alone who are to be feared.^(OT)
    Who can stand^(OU) before you when you are angry?^(OV)
8 From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared^(OW) and was quiet—
⁹ when you, God, rose up to judge,^(OX)
    to save all the afflicted^(OY) of the land.
¹⁰ Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,^(OZ)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.^[ae]

¹¹ Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;^(PA)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts^(PB) to the One to be feared.
¹² He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

³ I remembered^(PH) you, God, and I groaned;^(PI)
    I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.^[ag](PJ)
4 You kept my eyes from closing;
    I was too troubled to speak.^(PK)
5 I thought about the former days,^(PL)
    the years of long ago;
⁶ I remembered my songs in the night.
    My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

⁷ “Will the Lord reject forever?^(PM)
    Will he never show his favor^(PN) again?
⁸ Has his unfailing love^(PO) vanished forever?
    Has his promise^(PP) failed for all time?
⁹ Has God forgotten to be merciful?^(PQ)
    Has he in anger withheld his compassion?^(PR)”

¹⁰ Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.^(PS)
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles^(PT) of long ago.
¹² I will consider^(PU) all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”^(PV)

¹³ Your ways, God, are holy.
    What god is as great as our God?^(PW)
14 You are the God who performs miracles;^(PX)
    you display your power among the peoples.
¹⁵ With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,^(PY)
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

¹⁶ The waters^(PZ) saw you, God,
    the waters saw you and writhed;^(QA)
    the very depths were convulsed.
¹⁷ The clouds poured down water,^(QB)
    the heavens resounded with thunder;^(QC)
    your arrows^(QD) flashed back and forth.
¹⁸ Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,^(QE)
    your lightning^(QF) lit up the world;
    the earth trembled and quaked.^(QG)
19 Your path^(QH) led through the sea,^(QI)
    your way through the mighty waters,
    though your footprints were not seen.

²⁰ You led your people^(QJ) like a flock^(QK)
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.^(QL)

⁹ The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,^(RB)
    turned back on the day of battle;^(RC)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant^(RD)
    and refused to live by his law.^(RE)
