Psalm 32

Blessed Are the Forgiven

32 ^(A)Blessed is the one whose ^(B)transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
²Blessed is the man against whom the Lord ^(C)counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit ^(D)there is no deceit.

³For when I kept silent, my ^(E)bones wasted away
through my ^(F)groaning all day long.
⁴For day and night your ^(G)hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up^[b] as by the heat of summer. Selah

⁵I ^(H)acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I ^(I)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

⁶Therefore let everyone who is ^(J)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you ^(K)may be found;
surely in the rush of ^(L)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
⁷You are a ^(M)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from ^(N)trouble;
    you surround me with ^(O)shouts of deliverance. Selah

⁸I will ^(P)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will ^(Q)counsel you with my eye upon you.
⁹^(R)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with ^(S)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

¹⁰^(T)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds the one who ^(U)trusts in the Lord.
¹¹^(V)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
and ^(W)shout for joy, all you ^(X)upright in heart!

The Fall

3 Now ^(A)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You^[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” ²And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, ³but God said, ^(B)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” ⁴^(C)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. ⁵For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” ⁶So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,^[b] she took of its fruit ^(D)and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, ^(E)and he ate. ⁷^(F)Then the eyes of both were opened, ^(G)and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

4 ^(A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness ^(B)to be tempted by the devil. ²And after fasting ^(C)forty days and forty nights, he ^(D)was hungry. ³And ^(E)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(F)the Son of God, command ^(G)these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴But he answered, ^(H)“It is written,

^(I)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

⁷Jesus said to him, “Again ^(M)it is written, ^(N)‘You shall not ^(O)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ⁸^(P)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(Q)Satan!
