Psalm 18-30

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, (A)the servant of the Lord, (B)who addressed the words of this (C)song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:

18 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my (D)rock and my (E)fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my (F)rock, in (G)whom I take refuge,
    my (H)shield, and (I)the horn of my salvation, my (J)stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is (K)worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

4 (L)The cords of death encompassed me;
    (M)the torrents of destruction assailed me;[a]
5 (N)the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

6 (O)In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his (P)temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.

7 Then the earth (Q)reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils,[b]
    and devouring (R)fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He (S)bowed the heavens and (T)came down;
    (U)thick darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on (V)the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his (W)canopy around him,
    thick clouds (X)dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
    (Y)hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

13 The Lord also (Z)thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his (AA)voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his (AB)arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and (AC)routed them.
15 Then (AD)the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your (AE)rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of (AF)the breath of your nostrils.

16 He (AG)sent from on high, he took me;
    he (AH)drew me out of (AI)many waters.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were (AJ)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into (AK)a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he (AL)delighted in me.

20 The Lord dealt with me (AM)according to my righteousness;
    according to (AN)the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
21 For I have (AO)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For (AP)all his rules[c] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23 I was (AQ)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
24 So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 With (AR)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with (AS)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save (AT)a humble people,
    but (AU)the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my (AV)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can (AW)leap over (AX)a wall.
30 This God—his way is (AY)perfect;[d]
    the word of the Lord (AZ)proves true;
    he is (BA)a shield for all those who (BB)take refuge in him.

31 For (BC)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is (BD)a rock, except our God?—
32 the God who (BE)equipped me with strength
    and made my way (BF)blameless.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a (BG)deer
    and set me secure on (BH)the heights.
34 He (BI)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand (BJ)supported me,
    and your (BK)gentleness made me great.
36 You (BL)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
38 I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
39 For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
40 You made my enemies (BM)turn their backs to me,[e]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
41 (BN)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42 I beat them fine as (BO)dust before the wind;
    I cast them out like (BP)the mire of the streets.

43 You delivered me from (BQ)strife with the people;
    you made me (BR)the head of the nations;
    (BS)people whom I had not known served me.
44 As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    (BT)foreigners (BU)came cringing to me.
45 (BV)Foreigners lost heart
    and (BW)came trembling out of their fortresses.

46 The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
47 the God who gave me vengeance
    and (BX)subdued peoples under me,
48 who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you (BY)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from (BZ)the man of violence.

49 (CA)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and (CB)sing to your name.
50 Great (CC)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his (CD)anointed,
    to (CE)David and his offspring forever.

The Law of the Lord Is Perfect

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

19 (CF)The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above[f] proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
4 (CG)Their (CH)voice[g] goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for (CI)the sun,
5     (CJ)which comes out like (CK)a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them,
    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 (CL)The law of the Lord is perfect,[h]
    (CM)reviving the soul;
(CN)the testimony of the Lord is (CO)sure,
    (CP)making wise (CQ)the simple;
8 (CR)the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is (CS)pure,
    (CT)enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules[i] of the Lord are (CU)true,
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than (CV)gold,
    even much (CW)fine gold;
(CX)sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of (CY)the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    (CZ)in keeping them there is great reward.

12 (DA)Who can discern his errors?
    (DB)Declare me innocent from (DC)hidden faults.
13 (DD)Keep back your servant also from (DE)presumptuous sins;
    let them not have (DF)dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable in your sight,
    O Lord, my (DG)rock and my (DH)redeemer.

Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord (DI)answer you in the day of trouble!
    May (DJ)the name of the God of Jacob (DK)protect you!
2 May he send you help from (DL)the sanctuary
    and give you support from (DM)Zion!
3 May he (DN)remember all your offerings
    and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

4 May he (DO)grant you your heart's desire
    and fulfill all your plans!
5 May we shout for joy over (DP)your salvation,
    and in the name of our God set up our (DQ)banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

6 Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
    he will answer him from his holy heaven
    with (DR)the saving might of his right hand.
7 Some trust in (DS)chariots and some in (DT)horses,
    (DU)but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They collapse and fall,
    but we rise and stand upright.

9 O Lord, save (DV)the king!
    May he answer us when we call.

The King Rejoices in the Lord's Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in your (DW)strength the king rejoices,
    and in your (DX)salvation how greatly he exults!
2 You have (DY)given him his heart's desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you (DZ)meet him with rich blessings;
    you set (EA)a crown of (EB)fine gold upon his head.
4 He asked life of you; you (EC)gave it to him,
    (ED)length of days forever and ever.
5 His (EE)glory is great through your salvation;
    (EF)splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
6 For you make him most blessed forever;[j]
    you make him glad with the (EG)joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,
    and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be (EH)moved.

8 Your hand will (EI)find out all your enemies;
    your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them as (EJ)a blazing oven
    when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his (EK)wrath,
    and (EL)fire will consume them.
10 You (EM)will destroy their (EN)descendants from the earth,
    and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
    though they (EO)devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them (EP)to flight;
    you will (EQ)aim at their faces with your bows.

13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
    We will sing and praise your power.

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

22 (ER)My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so (ES)far from saving me, from the words of my (ET)groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by (EU)day, but you do not answer,
    and by night, but I find no rest.

3 Yet you are (EV)holy,
    (EW)enthroned on (EX)the praises[k] of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they (EY)cried and were rescued;
    in you they (EZ)trusted and were not put to shame.

6 But I am (FA)a worm and not a man,
    (FB)scorned by mankind and (FC)despised by the people.
7 All who see me (FD)mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they (FE)wag their heads;
8 (FF)“He trusts in the Lord; let him (FG)deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he (FH)delights in him!”

9 Yet you are he who (FI)took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
    and from (FJ)my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not (FK)far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is (FL)none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me;
    (FM)strong bulls of (FN)Bashan surround me;
13 they (FO)open wide their mouths at me,
    like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am (FP)poured out like water,
    and all my bones are (FQ)out of joint;
my (FR)heart is like (FS)wax;
    it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is (FT)dried up like a potsherd,
    and my (FU)tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For (FV)dogs encompass me;
    a company of evildoers (FW)encircles me;
they have (FX)pierced my hands and feet[l]—
17 I can count all my bones—
they (FY)stare and gloat over me;
18 (FZ)they divide my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But you, O Lord, (GA)do not be far off!
    O you my help, (GB)come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of (GC)the dog!
21     Save me from (GD)the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued[m] me from the horns of (GE)the wild oxen!

22 (GF)I will tell of your name to my (GG)brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who (GH)fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, (GI)glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of (GJ)the afflicted,
and he has not (GK)hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he (GL)cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great (GM)congregation;
    my (GN)vows I will (GO)perform before those who fear him.
26 (GP)The afflicted[n] shall (GQ)eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts (GR)live forever!

27 All (GS)the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all (GT)the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
28 For (GU)kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All (GV)the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall (GW)bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not (GX)keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming (GY)generation;
31 they shall (GZ)come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet (HA)unborn,
    that he has done it.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my (HB)shepherd; I shall not (HC)want.
2     He makes me lie down in green (HD)pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.[o]
3     He (HE)restores my soul.
He (HF)leads me in (HG)paths of righteousness[p]
    for his (HH)name's sake.

4 Even though I (HI)walk through the valley of (HJ)the shadow of death,[q]
    I will (HK)fear no evil,
for (HL)you are with me;
    your (HM)rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

5 You (HN)prepare a table before me
    in (HO)the presence of my enemies;
you (HP)anoint my head with oil;
    my (HQ)cup overflows.
6 Surely[r] goodness and mercy[s] shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall (HR)dwell[t] in the house of the Lord
    (HS)forever.[u]

The King of Glory

A Psalm of David.

24 (HT)The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,[v]
    the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has (HU)founded it upon (HV)the seas
    and established it upon the rivers.

3 (HW)Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his (HX)holy place?
4 (HY)He who has (HZ)clean hands and (IA)a pure heart,
    who does not (IB)lift up his soul to (IC)what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive (ID)blessing from the Lord
    and (IE)righteousness from (IF)the God of his salvation.
6 Such is (IG)the generation of those who seek him,
    who (IH)seek the face of the God of Jacob.[w] Selah

7 (II)Lift up your heads, O gates!
    And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that (IJ)the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty,

Teach Me Your Paths

25 To you, O Lord, I (IM)lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I (IN)trust;
    (IO)let me not be put to shame;
    (IP)let not my enemies exult over me.
3 Indeed, (IQ)none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are (IR)wantonly (IS)treacherous.

4 (IT)Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your (IU)truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

6 Remember your (IV)mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    (IW)for they have been from of old.
7 Remember not (IX)the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your (IY)steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

    and he makes known to them his covenant.

    for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
    bring me out of my distresses.

    and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes,
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!
    (JN)Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

    out of all his troubles.

I Will Bless the Lord

26 (JP)Vindicate me, O Lord,
    for I have (JQ)walked in my integrity,
    and I have (JR)trusted in the Lord without wavering.
2 (JS)Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
    test my heart and (JT)my mind.[z]
3 For your (JU)steadfast love is before my eyes,
    and I (JV)walk in your (JW)faithfulness.

4 I do not (JX)sit with men of (JY)falsehood,
    nor do I consort with hypocrites.
5 I (JZ)hate the assembly of evildoers,
    and I will not sit with the wicked.

    and the place where your glory dwells.

    nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
10 in whose hands are evil devices,

11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
    redeem me, and be gracious to me.

    in (KG)the great assembly I will bless the Lord.

The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

27 The Lord is my (KH)light and my (KI)salvation;
    (KJ)whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold[aa] of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When evildoers assail me
    to (KK)eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
    it is they who stumble and fall.

3 (KL)Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
    yet[ab] I will be confident.

4 (KM)One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may (KN)dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze upon (KO)the beauty of the Lord
    and to inquire[ac] in his temple.

5 For he will (KP)hide me in his shelter
    in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
    he will (KQ)lift me high upon a rock.

6 And now my (KR)head shall be lifted up
    above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
    sacrifices with shouts of (KS)joy;
(KT)I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

7 (KU)Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
    be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, (KV)“Seek[ad] my face.”
My heart says to you,
    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”[ae]
9     (KW)Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
    O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
    (KX)O God of my salvation!
10 For (KY)my father and my mother have forsaken me,
    but the Lord will (KZ)take me in.

11 (LA)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    and lead me on (LB)a level path
    because of my enemies.
12 (LC)Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
    for (LD)false witnesses have risen against me,
    and they (LE)breathe out violence.

13 I believe that I shall look[af] upon (LF)the goodness of the Lord
    in (LG)the land of the living!
14 (LH)Wait for the Lord;
    (LI)be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!

The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield

Of David.

28 To you, O Lord, I call;
    (LJ)my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you (LK)be silent to me,
    I become like those who (LL)go down to the pit.
2 (LM)Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
    when I cry to you for help,
when I (LN)lift up my hands
    (LO)toward your most holy sanctuary.[ag]

3 Do not (LP)drag me off with the wicked,
    with the workers of evil,
(LQ)who speak peace with their neighbors
    while evil is in their hearts.
4 (LR)Give to them according to their work
    and according to the evil of their deeds;
give to them according to the work of their hands;
    (LS)render them their due reward.
5 Because they (LT)do not regard the works of the Lord
    or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and build them up no more.

6 Blessed be the Lord!
    For he has (LU)heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and (LV)my shield;
    in him my heart (LW)trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
    and with my (LX)song I give thanks to him.

8 The Lord is the strength of his people;[ah]
    he is (LY)the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless (LZ)your heritage!
    (MA)Be their shepherd and (MB)carry them forever.

Ascribe to the Lord Glory

A Psalm of David.

29 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[ai]
    (MC)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in (MD)the splendor of holiness.[aj]

3 The voice of the Lord is over (ME)the waters;
    the God of glory (MF)thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is (MG)powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks (MH)the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to (MI)skip like a calf,
    and (MJ)Sirion like a young (MK)wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of (ML)Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord makes (MM)the deer give birth[ak]
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over (MN)the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned (MO)as king forever.
11 May the Lord give (MP)strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless[al] his people with (MQ)peace!

Joy Comes with the Morning

A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of (MR)the temple.

30 I will (MS)extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
    and have not let my foes (MT)rejoice over me.
2 O Lord my God, I (MU)cried to you for help,
    and you have (MV)healed me.
3 O Lord, you have brought up my soul from (MW)Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who (MX)go down to the pit.[am]

4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you (MY)his saints,
    and (MZ)give thanks to his holy name.[an]
5 (NA)For his anger is but for a moment,
    and (NB)his favor is for a lifetime.[ao]
(NC)Weeping may tarry for the night,
    but (ND)joy comes with the morning.

6 As for me, I said in my (NE)prosperity,
    “I shall never be (NF)moved.”
7 By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my (NG)mountain stand strong;

8 To you, O Lord, I cry,

    Will it tell of your faithfulness?

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

1 I love you, Lord, my strength.(B)

2 The Lord is my rock,(C) my fortress(D) and my deliverer;(E)
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,(F)
    my shield[b](G) and the horn[c] of my salvation,(H) my stronghold.

3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(I)
    and I have been saved from my enemies.(J)
4 The cords of death(K) entangled me;
    the torrents(L) of destruction overwhelmed me.
5 The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death(M) confronted me.

6 In my distress(N) I called to the Lord;(O)

9 “What is gained if I am silenced,

Will the dust praise you?

12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
