Yahweh’s Wrath Against the Nations

34 Draw near, (A)O nations, to hear; and pay attention, O peoples!
(B)Let the earth hear, as well as its fullness, the world and all that springs from it.
For the (C)indignation of Yahweh is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their [a]hosts;
He has [b](D)devoted them to destruction;
He has given them over to (E)slaughter.
So their slain will be (F)cast out,
And their corpses [c]will give off their (G)stench,
And the mountains will [d]be drenched with their (H)blood.
And (I)all the host of heaven will rot away,
And the (J)sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All their hosts will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
For (K)My sword is satiated in heaven;
Behold, it shall descend for judgment upon (L)Edom
And upon the people whom I have (M)devoted to destruction.
The sword of Yahweh is filled with blood;
It is [e]sated with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For Yahweh has a sacrifice in (N)Bozrah
And a great slaughter in the land of (O)Edom.
(P)And wild oxen will also [f]fall with them,
And (Q)young bulls with strong ones;
Thus their land will be (R)soaked with blood,
And their dust [g]become greasy with fat.
For Yahweh has a day of (S)vengeance,
A year of recompense for the [h]cause of Zion.
[i]And its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its dust into (T)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (U)not be quenched night or day;
Its (V)smoke will go up forever.
From (W)generation to generation it will be laid waste;
(X)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [j](Y)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [k]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (Z)line of utter formlessness
And the [l]plumb line of utter void.
12 Its nobles—there is (AA)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its princes will be (AB)non-existent.
13 And thorns will come up in its (AC)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (AD)jackals
And an abode of ostriches.
14 And the desert (AE)creatures will meet with the [m]wolves;
The [n](AF)hairy goat also will cry to its kind;
Surely, the [o]night creature will obtain relief there
And will find itself a resting place.
15 The [p]owl will make its nest and find its escape there,
And it will hatch its eggs and gather them in its shade.
Surely, (AG)the [q]falcons will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.

16 Seek from the (AH)book of Yahweh, and read:

Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [r](AI)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (AJ)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by (AK)line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (AL)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Judgment Against the Nations

34 Come near, you nations, and listen;(A)
    pay attention, you peoples!(B)
Let the earth(C) hear, and all that is in it,
    the world, and all that comes out of it!(D)
The Lord is angry with all nations;
    his wrath(E) is on all their armies.
He will totally destroy[a](F) them,
    he will give them over to slaughter.(G)
Their slain(H) will be thrown out,
    their dead bodies(I) will stink;(J)
    the mountains will be soaked with their blood.(K)
All the stars in the sky will be dissolved(L)
    and the heavens rolled up(M) like a scroll;
all the starry host will fall(N)
    like withered(O) leaves from the vine,
    like shriveled figs from the fig tree.

My sword(P) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    see, it descends in judgment on Edom,(Q)
    the people I have totally destroyed.(R)
The sword(S) of the Lord is bathed in blood,
    it is covered with fat—
the blood of lambs and goats,
    fat from the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice(T) in Bozrah(U)
    and a great slaughter(V) in the land of Edom.
And the wild oxen(W) will fall with them,
    the bull calves and the great bulls.(X)
Their land will be drenched with blood,(Y)
    and the dust will be soaked with fat.

For the Lord has a day(Z) of vengeance,(AA)
    a year of retribution,(AB) to uphold Zion’s cause.
Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
    her dust into burning sulfur;(AC)
    her land will become blazing pitch!
10 It will not be quenched(AD) night or day;
    its smoke will rise forever.(AE)
From generation to generation(AF) it will lie desolate;(AG)
    no one will ever pass through it again.
11 The desert owl[b](AH) and screech owl[c] will possess it;
    the great owl[d] and the raven(AI) will nest there.
God will stretch out over Edom(AJ)
    the measuring line of chaos(AK)
    and the plumb line(AL) of desolation.
12 Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom,
    all her princes(AM) will vanish(AN) away.
13 Thorns(AO) will overrun her citadels,
    nettles and brambles her strongholds.(AP)
She will become a haunt for jackals,(AQ)
    a home for owls.(AR)
14 Desert creatures(AS) will meet with hyenas,(AT)
    and wild goats will bleat to each other;
there the night creatures(AU) will also lie down
    and find for themselves places of rest.
15 The owl will nest there and lay eggs,
    she will hatch them, and care for her young
    under the shadow of her wings;(AV)
there also the falcons(AW) will gather,
    each with its mate.

16 Look in the scroll(AX) of the Lord and read:

None of these will be missing,(AY)
    not one will lack her mate.
For it is his mouth(AZ) that has given the order,(BA)
    and his Spirit will gather them together.
17 He allots their portions;(BB)
    his hand distributes them by measure.
They will possess it forever
    and dwell there from generation to generation.(BC)

Vengeance of Yahweh

63 Who is this who comes from (A)Edom,
With (B)garments of [a]glowing colors from (C)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His clothing,
[b]Marching in the greatness of His power?
“It is I who speak in righteousness, (D)mighty to save.”
Why is Your clothing red,
And Your garments like the one who (E)treads in the wine press?
(F)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no man with Me.
I also (G)trod them in My anger
And (H)trampled them in My wrath;
And (I)their [c]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [d]stained all My clothes.
For the (J)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
I looked, and there was (K)no one to help,
And I was astonished, and there was no one to uphold;
So My (L)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
I (M)trod down the peoples in My anger
And made them (N)drunk in My wrath,
And I brought down their lifeblood to the earth.”

63 Who is this coming from Edom,(A)

Why are your garments red,
    like those of one treading the winepress?(F)

“I have trodden the winepress(G) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled(H) them in my anger

their blood spattered my garments,(J)

Word Against Edom

Concerning (A)Edom.
Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Is there no longer any (B)wisdom in (C)Teman?
Has counsel been lost to the understanding?
Has their wisdom decayed?
Flee away, turn back, inhabit the depths,
O inhabitants of (D)Dedan,
For I [a]will bring the (E)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I [b]punish him.
(F)If grape gatherers came to you,
Would they not have gleanings remain?
If thieves came by night,
They would ruin only [c]until they had enough.
10 But I have (G)stripped Esau bare;
I have uncovered his hiding places,
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His seed has been destroyed along with his [d]relatives
And his neighbors, and (H)he is no more.
11 Leave your [e](I)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your (J)widows trust in Me.”

12 For thus says Yahweh, “Behold, those who are not under judgment to drink the (K)cup will certainly drink it, but are you the one who will go (L)completely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but you will certainly drink it. 13 For I have (M)sworn by Myself,” declares Yahweh, “that (N)Bozrah will become an (O)object of horror, a reproach, a ruin, and an imprecation; and all its cities will become perpetual [f]ruins.”

14 I have (P)heard a message from Yahweh,
And an (Q)envoy is sent among the nations, saying,
(R)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among men.
16 As for the terror of you,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
O you who dwell in the clefts of [g]the (S)rock,
Who seize the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as (T)high as an eagle’s,
I will (U)bring you down from there,” declares Yahweh.

17 “Edom will become [h]an (V)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will [i]be horrified and will (W)hiss at all its wounds. 18 Like the (X)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says Yahweh, “(Y)no one will live there, nor will a son of man sojourn in it. 19 (Z)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [j](AA)thickets of the Jordan against an enduring pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (AB)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (AC)like Me, and who will [k]summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (AD)who can stand against Me?”

20 Therefore hear the (AE)counsel of Yahweh which He has counseled against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture (AF)desolate because of them. 21 The (AG)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the [l]Red Sea. 22 Behold, [m]He will mount up and (AH)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings [n]against Bozrah; and the (AI)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

A Message About Edom(A)(B)

Concerning Edom:(C)

This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?(D)
    Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    Has their wisdom decayed?
Turn and flee, hide in deep caves,(E)
    you who live in Dedan,(F)
for I will bring disaster on Esau
    at the time when I punish him.
If grape pickers came to you,
    would they not leave a few grapes?
If thieves came during the night,
    would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
10 But I will strip Esau bare;
    I will uncover his hiding places,(G)
    so that he cannot conceal himself.
His armed men are destroyed,
    also his allies and neighbors,
    so there is no one(H) to say,
11 ‘Leave your fatherless children;(I) I will keep them alive.
    Your widows(J) too can depend on me.’”

12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup(K) must drink it, why should you go unpunished?(L) You will not go unpunished, but must drink it. 13 I swear(M) by myself,” declares the Lord, “that Bozrah(N) will become a ruin and a curse,[a] an object of horror(O) and reproach;(P) and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”(Q)

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;
    an envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Assemble yourselves to attack it!
    Rise up for battle!”

15 “Now I will make you small among the nations,
    despised by mankind.
16 The terror you inspire
    and the pride(R) of your heart have deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks,(S)
    who occupy the heights of the hill.
Though you build your nest(T) as high as the eagle’s,
    from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror;(U)
    all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff
    because of all its wounds.(V)
18 As Sodom(W) and Gomorrah(X) were overthrown,
    along with their neighboring towns,”
says the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell(Y) in it.

19 “Like a lion(Z) coming up from Jordan’s thickets(AA)
    to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.
    Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?
Who is like(AB) me and who can challenge me?(AC)
    And what shepherd(AD) can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,(AE)
    what he has purposed(AF) against those who live in Teman:(AG)
The young of the flock(AH) will be dragged away;
    their pasture will be appalled at their fate.(AI)
21 At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble;(AJ)
    their cry(AK) will resound to the Red Sea.[b]
22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop(AL) down,
    spreading its wings over Bozrah.(AM)
In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors(AN)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(AO)

And I will lay it waste; from (D)Teman even to (E)Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 (F)I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom (G)according to My anger and according to My wrath; thus they will know My vengeance,” declares Lord Yahweh.
