  1. Ecclesiastes 1:2 The Hebrew term hebel, translated vanity or vain, refers concretely to a “mist,” “vapor,” or “mere breath,” and metaphorically to something that is fleeting or elusive (with different nuances depending on the context). It appears five times in this verse and in 29 other verses in Ecclesiastes

Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths,
    and (A)my lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely (B)all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah
    Surely a man (C)goes about as a shadow!
Surely for nothing[a] they are in turmoil;
    man (D)heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!

(A)Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these (B)uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, (C)for he feared greatly. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine (A)and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, (B)they fled.

12 For (A)the word of God is living and (B)active, (C)sharper than any (D)two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and (E)discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (F)no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are (G)naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

The Law and Sin

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, (A)I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if (B)the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, (C)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. (D)For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment (E)that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, (F)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, (G)deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So (H)the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, (A)‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, (B)the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 (C)The second is this: (D)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment (E)greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that (F)he is one, and (G)there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all (H)the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, (I)is much more than all (J)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” (K)And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.
